led Phil deep into an ancient
well, where he recovered

a centuries-old coin from
the time of Robin Hood himself.

This coin is Robin Hood old.

Meanwhile, Heather encountered

strange, seemingly hostile
paranormal activity...

Newstead Abbey.

I've had terrifying
experiences here.

An ancient monastery in
the heart of Sherwood Forest.

This is where the Black Friar
has been sighted.

And the 800-year-old complex...

Right there, right there.

its haunted reputation.

After Phil witnessed
unexplained phenomena

deep within
the so-called Devil's Wood...

And then we were encircled
by energy.

Well, we had these EMF spikes
that surrounded us.

From Sherwood Forest,

we head back
to the city of Nottingham

to meet Robin Hood's
legendary nemesis.

Well, his modern-day successor
anyway, Zafran Khan.

When did the Sheriff
of Nottingham start?

How many sheriffs have
there been?

The Sheriff of Nottingham
started in 1449.

I am roughly the 1300th sheriff
of our city.

Wow.

The main primary role of
the sheriff was to keep

the king's peace, to make sure
nobody in Nottingham was trying

to overthrow the monarchy.

I thought his main role was
catching Robin Hood.

That was also part of it, yes.

The responsibilities have
changed, thankfully, now.

My role now is an ambassador
to the city,

so I do everything ceremonial.

So you're a bit more popular
than the sheriff in the time

of Robin Hood?
- Yes, 100%.

And my understanding is there
is a particular building

you want us to go take
a look at.

Yes, the National
Justice Museum,

the oldest prison in Nottingham,

and also my old office.

There's a lot of
dark secrets there.

And some strange things have
been reported over the years.

There's a couple of people

their stories with you.

was held captive inside this
centuries-old prison.

Today, it no longer holds
prisoners, instead standing as

a symbol of Nottingham's
violent past.

We're meeting with its curator,
Stephen Dennis,

and longtime guide,
Claire Finn, who both claim

to have had
disturbing encounters

inside these foreboding walls.

So I'm guessing there have been
a lot of criminals

in and out of this place.
- Mm-hmm.

Take us back to the beginning.

Well, you got to go back
to the Middle Ages

for the very beginning
in this building.

The deeper you go
into the building,

the older it gets.

Once you get to the bottom,

you're at the oldest
medieval sections

which are cut
into the rock face.

The next layers up,
you'll get to

the 17th and 18th centuries.

Above that,
you got the courts--

the most modern part
of the building really.

There's five levels altogether

all for different
time periods.

And the lower you go,
the deeper into the history

of Nottingham.
- Yeah, that's right.

So, in medieval times,

what were the conditions of
this prison like?

The jail was notorious
for having

absolutely awful conditions.

You're just put in a communal
cell, which is basically a pit,

full of other people,
all hungry, all fighting over

a scrap of blanket,
absolute squalor.

Disease was rife--
jail fever, they called it,

and if you tried to escape,
you get in a fight,

they would remove you from
the group and put you in

the oubliettes, which is
a French word,

means "place to forget."

There was this bottle-shaped
cave beneath the building,

designed for one person,
who you could just drop down

the hole and forget.

And no one's gonna hear
your screams down there.

That's absolutely horrific.

And overseeing all of those
horrific conditions was

the Sheriff of Nottingham.

It was
his responsibility, yeah.

The Sheriff of Nottingham was
a complete nasty piece of work.

So if the Sheriff of
Nottingham was involved

from the beginning,
I'm guessing maybe

the Robin Hood story
connects to this.

Yes, there's a very famous
tale about him

being arrested by the sheriff
and brought here as a prisoner.

The stories say that
he was put in an oubliette

at the very bottom
of the building.

But obviously no jail kept him
locked up for long, did it?

- He did escape.
- How did he get out?

Nottingham has cave systems.

- Oh, we've seen that.
- Mmm.

And if you know
the way into those caves,

you may have an access route
out of the building.

So people would be imprisoned
here-- would they be

penalized here?
- They would be executed here.

In fact, ten men were executed
directly behind you,

outside this building.
- Right here?

Right on those steps.

Hanged.

What did they do
with the bodies

after they hanged
these prisoners?

They were buried in the jail,
in the exercise yard.

So, with criminals,
executions, torture,

this place has got to have some
paranormal activity.

Yeah, so this has been going
on for many, many years.

It's staff, it's public,
who've all had

various horrible experiences.

We've had people
who've been physically sick

in certain areas
of the building.

People have witnessed
dark shadow figures

coming towards them.

They've heard
talkings and footsteps

when there's nobody there.

And I saw a figure in
the exercise yard once.

So you're telling me
both of you

think this place is haunted?

- Absolutely, yeah.
- Oh yeah.

Are there notorious prisoners
of the past that are believed

to still be here today?

So some believe that there is
still a spirit of a man

called Thomas Gray.

He was a local killer
to Nottingham.

He was actually the last man
to be hanged here.

And he's also buried now in
the exercise yard.

He's a very aggressive,
very volatile spirit.

How does that manifest?

We've had members of
the public who've gone down

into the dark cell.

Thomas Gray was locked up
down there.

And there's no light
in there at all.

It's complete isolation.

People will come out,
and they've had scratches.

In fact, we've actually got
a photograph that they believe

is Thomas Gray.
- Ooh.

- Oh, right there.
- Creepy.

Yeah, it's like he wants to be
quite intimidating.

And why do they think
it's Thomas Gray?

Because once he would have
been found guilty, that area

there would have been used as
a condemned cell,

where he would have waited
for his execution.

So his final moments alive
would have been right there?

I truly believe there are some
dangerous forces out here.

With centuries of horrific
history stacked beneath us,

Phil and I decide to split up.

yard, the final resting place

of some of Nottingham's most
notorious prisoners,

including murderer Thomas Gray,
where shadow figures

are often sighted.

the 18th century courtroom,

where visitors report seeing

apparitions and feeling
phantom touches.

So we're in the courtroom.

This is where these criminals
would be judged,

where they would
learn their fate.

a space that has

layers of people's pain,

this whole space
feels so oppressive.

People report hearing things,

seeing things, shadow
figures specifically,

and being physically touched.

and not a spiritual ghost.

What's interesting is,
despite all those reports of

shadow figures, I'm not getting
anything on the XLS.

But this REM Pod going off,

And it seemed to lead me
to the forest.

its spiritual story.

the mystical practices

of Sherwood Forest?

For all of human history,
there's been a spark of

Paganism in Sherwood Forest.

The forest harbored outlaws
like Robin Hood,

but also it harbored people
who were outcasts

and on the outskirts
of society.

So that would be
the archetypal character

of the witch.
- Mm-hmm.

You know, the unpopular woman
who everybody quietly went to

to get their medicine.

Here in Sherwood Forest,
Pagans practiced rituals for

well over a thousand years.

That is going to leave
a huge energetic imprint

on this space.

Yeah, that will indeed
leave an imprint.

In two different locations in
our investigations,

I got the words, "Go out."

And I wonder if that means
go out to nature,

get back to the forest.

The forest is the energy
magnet of this area.

It is the place where nature
and humanity meet spirituality.

How does that manifest?

What does that look like
or feel like?

As you make your way through
the forest, then be aware of

your own senses.

Listen for what changes,
what moves-- the birds,

the animals, and how
they react and respond to you.

And how the trees
react and respond to you.

something trying to do us harm.

I feel the exact opposite here.

Each location
led us to here.

All of that evidence, all of
that activity, all pointed us

to Sherwood Forest.

It feels like something was
trying to bring us to safety.

This is a place of peace.

It's a heartening idea,
particularly after all

the trauma and terror
that my team uncovered

during their investigation into
the haunted history

of Robin Hood.

While we may never know for
certain whether Robin Hood

himself truly existed,
we did find evidence of exactly

what he might have robbed
from the rich.

Testing confirmed that
Phil's hunch was right.

The coin he recovered from
the well under

the Ye Olde Salutation Inn is
indeed a genuine silver

shortcross penny--

minted during the reign of
Richard the Lionheart between

1189 and 1199,

this really could have been
a coin that

Robin was, well, robbin'.

But my team didn't just find
ancient history.

Heather wonders if guardian
