I like to go to the track for the early
morning workouts.

At first it was difficult to get up that
early, and then after the first time I

went, it gets into you.

You stand on the track in the early
morning, and there are all the horses

and a lot of activity, and then to see
your own horse come out, and they dance

out there, and they prance around, and
their necks are bowed, and they're on

their toes, as they call it.

And then he works, and they're clocked,
and it's a good time. It's really a

kicker, and it's fun.

I got involved in horse racing through a
friend.

I was introduced to a horse trainer.

And I showed an interest in the races.
He would bring over videotapes of the

races, and I'd watch them in pictures. I
was just kind of fascinated by the

racetrack. So he just asked if I'd like
to get involved in it.

So it was three of us, two friends and
myself, that bought kind of a broken

-down mare. But, you know, she was
pretty, and she was my horse.

We raced her, and it was just a big kick
to see your own horse come down that

finish line, whether she was first or
tenth.

Her last race, she came in third, so she
came in the money.

And I decided at that point that I
wanted to see one win.

Chardin is the gelding's name, and when
I watch him on the track, my heart just

drops, thinking it might be my baby out
there.

When I took my first horse, Jan's
Princess, off the track, I tried to

break her into a riding horse.

I saddled her up on a little piece of
leather, and I got up on her, and I

galloped her, and I finally got to the
point where I was comfortable on the

exercise saddle. And then I almost
envisioned myself in a race.

Now, here she comes on the backstretch
on Jan's Princess flying.

It was always great. I was almost in the
run for the roses. Here she comes on the

backstretch. Ruth on Jan's Princess, a
winner.

There's a full moon out tonight.

And love is moving in the shadow.

I got no place to run.

And it's following me everywhere that I
go.

Less often in the air, I can feel it
everywhere.

I think I've stayed in St. Louis because
my family's here and also the work that

I do.

I've been modeling for, I think, going
to my seventh year now.

And St. Louis is quite a large town, but
yet it seems like a small town

atmosphere. When I work for people that
I've worked for year after year, they

become close to you. They're like
family. And I think in a larger town, I

wouldn't get that.

I think St. Louis is known for the arch,
among other things.

But the arch is an amazing thing.

It was built when I was very small.

And I don't think I appreciated it until
I was older. And I don't know how it was

built. I'm not sure.

And it's just amazing to stand below it
and be so tiny and look up at that great

big thing.

I grew up with two older brothers.

And at the time, I thought this is...

horrible where's my little sister
where's even an older sister another

female around but now i'm glad i grew up
with two older brothers i was never

separated from them In fact, I wanted to
be a boy when I was little. I used to

carry a wallet, and I can remember when
I was real tiny, my dad had his favorite

chair, and he smoked cigars. And he
would sit in his chair, and I had a

little chair just like it. And I would
sit next to him, and I had my own little

cigar box, and I'd put one in my mouth
still with the paper on it, of course.

But I wanted to be just like my father
and my brothers.

And it was hard for me to finally
realize, hey, I can't do this anymore.

After a long day at work, when I get
home, I just like to get whatever I had

on off and get into a robe and just be
comfortable, a loose-fitting robe.

I live in the woods, and I can't see a
neighbor, and it's very private and very

secluded. It's nice to just get away
from people and be alone and be by

myself for a while.

I think Ruth is sexy.

I feel that way a lot. I feel that way
more than 80% of the time.

It's nice to put on something soft and
silky and sip on a glass of wine, and

those are the times when I feel very
sexy.

I was born in Rock Island, Illinois, and
I lived there up until I was 19 years

old when I hopped in my car and decided
to drive out to California and see what

was out there for me.

Rock Island is called Rock Island
because it is between the Rock River and

the Mississippi River, and it's somewhat
of an island. It has some connecting

parts.

Rock Island might be better well known
for the Rock Island lines, the old train

lines that ran through there.

I remember when I took one of the last
rides on the Rock Island line with my

mother before they closed the train
down.

And that was kind of a sad moment for
everybody back there because it was a

very historical thing.

And now it's gone.

I like the antiquity of the Quad Cities,
the oldness of it, the old

houses. the old people.

It just makes it such a nice natural
place to be.

I was a brat when I was young.

I will admit that over and over again
because I gave my brother the hardest

time.

He's nine years older than myself, and
he was always stuck babysitting me.

I don't know if that was supposed to
bring us closer, or I don't know if it

brought us farther apart, but I just
know now he still looks at me and shakes

his head because he can't believe the
things that I go out and do. I'm very

daring.

I wasn't that bad of a kid, though,
either. I was very cooperative with my

parents.

If they wanted me to do dishes, I'd do
dishes. I'd make my bed. I'd help her

clean the house.

I guess you could call me a very 50-50
child.

It was either 50 bad or 50 good, and
there was no in-between.

I love to go back home because I love my
parents. I love my brother. I love my

sister-in-law and my niece.

It's very important to me to be close to
my family and share with them what is

happening in my life now.

When my little niece Sarah arrived, it
was one of the happiest days I think

I've seen in our family in about 10, 15
years, maybe 24.

Last time might have been when I was
born, I don't know.

When I was home, I had the opportunity
to go with my brother and my sister-in

-law and Sarah to the circus. The circus
came to Rock Island.

When I go back to Illinois, I try to
make the time with Sarah and I very

close. I want to really bridge that gap
between Aunt Marlene and Little Miss

Sarah.

Ballooning was one experience that I
never really thought I'd be able to do.

If I'm going to be adventurous and if I
want to go do something and fulfill a

dream, I like to be a part of it. I like
to work with it. I like to work for it.

And that's why it was good in me helping
Joe put the balloon together, getting it

all ready, and then being able to go out
and experience it.

Being up there was the most sensual
experience I felt in a long time. It was

so free, so quiet, so alone, so free yet
so fun.

It was perfect.

Everybody's always called Marlene a free
bird. But this free bird does want to

marry one day and have children.

that is very heavy friends and very

name

is Karina Persson. I was born in
Stockholm, Sweden.

but the last few years I've been
traveling around pretty much.

I'm not a city girl.

Sometimes I like to get into the city
and have fun, but I don't want to stay

too long.

I like nature around me. The city is
man-made, but nature is part of what we

all are.

Helsinki is a cute little town. It's
very commercialized and there's a lot of

tourists, of course.

But it reminds me of Denmark.

It reminds me of home.

I lived close to Denmark in Sweden.

I went to Denmark a few times every week
just to have fun.

I had fun in solving.

There's a lot of little things to see
and do. Just walk around and look in the

stores and look at the different kinds
of people that come there.

Can I take a picture of you?

I like to take pictures.

It's nice to have some visual memories
that won't go away.

That's cute.

I like being around children because
they're natural.

They're honest. They are themselves.

And they're fun.

I was a happy child.

I grew up in a nice family with sisters
and brothers and a lot of fun.

I was kind of a stubborn kid.

I wanted to do things my own way. And in
school I was...

It was good in school.

I like to be out in nature just with the
sun and the wind and the smells

and the sounds of birds and bees.

It makes me feel very romantic.

I like to just take my clothes off and
walk around and just feel good.

I love nature and living things and I
don't want to kill anything if I can

avoid it. I want everything to have a
chance to live and grow just as much as

I do.

Nudity is one of the most natural things
in the world. If you're not too cold and

nobody minds, why should you keep your
clothes on?

It's a little bit different in the
Scandinavian countries, I think. The way

I grew up was pretty free. You didn't
have to think much about it.

I had the opportunity to go out on a
fishing boat in Avila, which was real

nice.

They told me a little about how the
fishing works and how the boat works.

I didn't know that whales come into the
nets and they have to fix the nets

pretty often because of the big fish
that goes into it and destroys it.

Things like that.

It was very interesting and I hadn't
been out for a while on the sea, so...

A nice trip. A lot of fun.

I'll stop it here and show you how the
net looks in the water.

Of course, it'll be on the bottom. You
won't see it, but I've just given you an

idea of what it looks like.

You can see the long funnel tube.

There it goes on back and the fish all
get into the sack.

I love the ocean. I grew up by the
ocean.

When I was little, my father had boats.
We were going out for weekends, just

having fun.

My parents think it's real nice that I'm
going to be in Playboy. They say they're

proud of me. My mother wrote me a letter
and told me that she thought it was

great.

I've spent a lot of time alone before,
but I think it's time to open up and see

more people, just to learn to
communicate.

The thing with Playboy is giving me a
good opportunity to do things like that.

Someday I'd like to have a family and
children and a little house in the

country with a nice garden with fruit
trees, the mountains in the back and the

ocean in the front.

Just live a simple life.

George.

I was born in the South. I was born in
Norfolk, Virginia.

I won an art contest when I was seven
years old.

Through that, I had acting classes,
dance classes, and art classes. All

through high school, I had two or three
art classes every semester.

And I still sketch, and I think that's
where the makeup came in.

Because I really think in terms of a
person's face would be a canvas.

Makeup base is priming a face like you
would prime a canvas. And then you put

your colors or bring the different parts
out.

I think one sort of led to the other.

Working behind the camera and working
with the crew and photographers really

was a plus for me when I got in front of
the camera because I've done it. I know

how difficult it is to get everything
together.

It just made it a lot more fun. It was
like family, working with family.

Try getting the left shoulder all the
way up to your chin. Bring it up. Good.

Okay, we're going to do some face shots
and we're going to do some breath shots.

Lean back a little bit more.

I really liked working with Arnie
Freitag on my shooting.

He's laid back. He's fun.

He doesn't put pressure on you, but he's
also very good at telling you what he

wants. You don't have to be nervous or
anything like that. He's great.

I like going to Santa Barbara, possibly
because it reminds me a little of the

South. It's very tranquil. It's very
beautiful.

You've got the mountains. You've got the
ocean.

Plus, you've got a beautiful little
town.

I think it's the best place to go,
really, if you're based in Los Angeles,

as far as getting away to something
that's a little more down to earth.

I mean, I suppose if you lived in New
York, you'd have to go to Connecticut or

something like that. In L.A., we have
Santa Barbara.

I started going with a good friend.

They showed me the city in such a way
that I just acquired such fondness for

it that I love to go back now even by
myself.

My problem is that I'm extremely
romantic.

And I don't know if that's from the
South. Maybe I'm Scarlett O'Hara

reincarnated. I know my mother saw the
film the same day I was born. But I

believe in chivalry and being...

courted every day i don't think it's i
think when you get married i don't think

it should ever stop i think you should
always court each other and make it as

good as the first day

When I was a little girl, I didn't like
to get dirty.

I liked getting dressed up a lot.

In fact, I took such good care of my
clothes that I was able to hand them

down to my sisters, and they were in
perfect condition.

But I loved wearing little dresses,
frilly dresses.

My mother probably spent more on my
clothes then than I spend on them now.

I just loved being a little girl.

I enjoy sports to an extent. I like to
go watch them in person. I don't really

watch them on television except the
Olympics or something like that. But

I've never been very athletic.

And so that's always very challenging
for me to do something as far as rag-a

-ball tennis.

I think I'd have to say I'd be willing
to try anything at least once.

Perfect.

Yay! That's all I want. Okay, I quit. I
was perfect. No, no.

We're probably going to stay out here
four hours doing this.

I just want to ask you one question.

Do I have to sweat in this game? I'm

I was captured by a star, but I

centerfold gave me a lot of confidence

in myself as a woman. I realized that I
had the strength.

To do a lot of things I didn't realize I
could do as far as business.

I have been an executive before for a
company.

I worked with advertising and then as a
makeup artist. And now as a model, I've

got a confidence in myself I never had.
I think my goal in life is basically to

be happy. I don't have to prove it with
a career or a job, but with a peace of

mind.

I'm a newcomer to Hollywood.

I just moved here to pursue my dream.

I've always wanted to be a successful
actress.

When I was living in Florida, I had
small parts in a couple of movies,

including Smokey and the Bandit Part 3.
I really love acting, and I'm ready to

work as hard as I can to try to make it
in the movies.

My name's Veronica Gamba. I'm Miss
November of 1983.

Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

When I was one year old, we moved to New
Rochelle, New York.

Later, we moved to Fort Lauderdale for
six years.

And after high school, I studied dancing
and attended Brown Institute.

That's a broadcasting school.

I also got my AA degree in
communications before I moved to LA.

spend an afternoon as a disc jockey at
K-Rock.

I really enjoyed that day.

Dick Lowry, the director of Smokey Part
3, asked me if I'd be interested in

testing for Playmate.

I talked it over with my mother, who is
my best friend, and whose opinion

matters a lot to me.

And we agreed that Playboy is classy and
tasteful, and that I should do it.

It was a beautiful experience.

And here I am.

Mary Ann Gravatt

About a year ago, Richard Bagley came to
me and showed me a

composite of this model who had just
started with the Playboy Model Agency,

named Marianne Gravatt.

He said, wouldn't she make a great
playmate?

I thought he was right, and he did a
small test on her.

When I looked at the pictures, I said,
hold it.

This girl is terrific.

I didn't ask Hef. I didn't ask the
editors. I said, we'll do a gatefold

shooting immediately.

Now, I've been with the magazine for a
lot of years, and I know that Hef likes

tall, leggy blondes.

And I wasn't taking too much of a
chance, but I knew that Mary Ann was

special.

I grew up in Arcadia.

That's a small town in Southern
California.

My father's a produce buyer for a
grocery store, but he got me my first

job bagging groceries.

I liked it. Every day was different.

You never knew what to expect.

That's what I was doing, bagging
groceries, just until a few months

before I got the chance to shoot for
Playboy.

Shooting for Playboy helped me to come
out of my shyness.

I've always been shy, but I knew I
wanted to model.

I decided to try for the top, Playboy.

So when I went to see the people at
Playboy Models, the next thing I knew I

was posing for the magazine.

It seems like one day I said goodbye to
the market, and the next day I said

hello to a whole new adventure.

Even more. Let it slip right off. Yes.

Great.

Very soft.

The photographer who shot me for Playboy
was Richard Fake.

Posing without my clothes on for the
first time was the hardest thing I ever

did.

And he let me go real slow, which
helped.

I was nervous, and I knew he could tell
I was nervous, and I just wondered if he

went through this every time.

And then there came a point when I
realized he was...

Just doing his job. He was just trying
to get the best he could get.

That's when I decided to start trying to
do the best I could do.

We'd work together and things would work
out good.

Sometimes, sitting with Richard in a
set, I'll start daydreaming that the set

has become a reality, and I'm really out
on the beach, walking in the sand, and I

can feel the sun. Sometimes I'll pretend
the lights are even the sun.

So it helps to daydream.

It's so good.

When we make love, it's understood.

More than a touch, a word we say.

It's only a dream to lead this way.

When you love someone, yeah, I really
love.

fantasies, now they're coming true.

Sometimes it's almost like a dream.

I'd say in a way, Marianne's shyness has
been a great benefit to my photography.

With Marianne, even though she's a very
good model, she doesn't try to impress

you with anything that she has to say or
know.

puts the shooting entirely in your hands
and just simply lets you go with it.

And it made my job a lot easier.

and I have always been close.

At first I was a little concerned about
how his friends might react to me being

a centerfold, but what happened was they
thought it was great.

I see myself as someone who's soft and
gentle.

I like flowers and perfume and honest
affection.

Sometimes when I'm alone and I think
about those dreams I had for so long and

how beautiful my life's become, I feel
like anything's possible.

Maybe I'm just an old-fashioned
romantic.

Or maybe I'm still dreaming.

But the way everything is now, I'm
really looking forward to the future and

all that it holds.

I like dreaming.
