Sailing to Hawaii from Newport Beach,
California with my boyfriend was a

really wonderful experience.

When you're sailing, your mind is able
to wander.

There are no outside pressures to affect
you.

All you do is basically relax and relax
and relax.

Your mind frees itself.

Even though there might be some rough
times on the water, you still are very

in touch with yourself, and it's very
peaceful.

One of the reasons we were sailing our
boat to Hawaii was so we could live on

the boat when we got there.

So in a sense, it was transferring our
home from one port to another.

After being out at sea for 16 days, it
was thrilling to see Hawaii and to know

we'd finally made it.

Once we got to Hawaii, I was planning to
go to the University of Hawaii, which

I'm doing right now.

My major is physiology.

There's been times when people view me
as more of a sex object instead of a

person. And whatever I do, whether I'm a
playmate or a doctor or anything, I'm

still going to be the same basic person.

A lot of people forget that, and they
try to look just at this image that's

formed instead of looking.

at the real person behind it that's hard
to deal with sometimes i was raised in

long beach california which is a coastal
city i remember when i was a child

standing on the porch with a bunch of my
friends and they were all saying they

were going to be doctors or lawyers and
i said i was going to be a playboy bunny

i've also always had adventurous
fantasies as far as jobs and just places

i'd like to go and things i'd like to do

I was very people-oriented.

All the jobs that I had in my mind were
dedicated to helping other people.

I started getting involved with sign
language for the deaf about three years

ago when I went up to the mountains with
a group of kids and there was one girl

who was deaf and she didn't know how to
communicate with the rest of us.

and we couldn't talk to her so i
realized that there was a need for

somebody to interpret at least for her
and i figured there'd be other people

that would be like her and i started
taking classes and i did well enough so

that after about two months my
instructor made me interpret for him

since then i started interpreting every
time i've gone to a school that's had

the need for it

I'm excited about the opportunity I've
had to be a playmate.

I think I've learned a lot about myself
through this experience, and I've also

enjoyed a lot of the people that I've
met and a lot of the experiences that

I've had.

it's a lot more relaxed than most of the
mainland and the people are generally i

think they're fairly good people i enjoy
the cultural background that they have

there i believe i'm a

physically active person because i
realize how good it is for me but also i

really enjoy moving anything that
requires

some movement or energy to be expended,
I love to do.

I'm doing acrobatics right now and it's
exhilarating to be learning something

that's physical and also it's hard to do
but it's enjoyable.

I have a lot of goals for my future.

I do plan to get a PhD in physiology or
in psychophysiology, and I would like to

be a doctor or do research.

In the meantime, I also want to sail
down to the Marquesas and all through

the South Pacific.

Friday night regatta is a good way to
get together with a group of my friends

and just enjoy the ocean and the end of
the week.

When I've been to Helmsman and regatta,
it's been exciting because I really want

to win.

It was fun. It was a challenge to see if
I could get the correct tacks and have

the right wind with me and everything,
but I think I need a little more

practice.

I do feel like I have an affinity for
the ocean. I notice that if I'm inland

and I'm not seeing the water every day,
I start getting a little anxious, and I

just really need to go out there and
either go swimming or sailing or diving

or something.

When I think of the ocean, I consider it
a she.

And this ocean is a very large and
powerful, yet also gentle creature.

To me, she seems like she wants to
protect me. But then I've also seen her

when she's very cold and angry or just
lonesome.

Basically, I have a lot of respect for
her.

a lot of love, and she also gives me
fear because I've seen what she's done.

I've seen her rip boats up and rip
people up and islands.

I've always felt very relaxed about
being nude.

Clothes usually have a lot to do with
how other people view you and when they

see you naked, it's a very honest thing.

When we sailed over, I think I wore
clothes about maybe 30 hours and that

was at night when it was cold.

Other than that, I didn't wear anything
and I really enjoyed that freedom.

I have enjoyed modeling for Playboy just
for the same reason.

When I'm shooting, I really enjoy the
freedom I have to be able to express

myself sexually in a way that it's
otherwise not allowable if you're going

to be out in public or something,
because it's sort of taboo to take off

your clothes.

So shooting for the magazine, that was
about my biggest thrill, I think.

Being a playmate didn't really hit me
until I saw the magazine.

To me, Playboy means opportunity.

At 17, I guess I blossomed.

A friend of mine, Bob Noble, took this
photograph of me and sent it to Playboy.

The next thing I knew, he called me up
and said, Patty, Playboy wants to text

you for a centerfold.

I was born in Los Angeles and raised in
Ontario, California.

I've been very fortunate most of my
life.

I have the greatest family.

Although I don't live at home anymore,
my boyfriend and I enjoy going to my

mother's house for a good home-cooked
meal.

My mother's behind me in everything I
do, and she's very proud of me.

Wherever we go, she says, this is my
daughter, the one who is in Playboy.

Hi, Mom. Hi, Tina.

Hi, how are you doing?

Hi, Mike. How are you?

My mother comes from the old country in
Italy.

I love my Italian heritage because
Italians are very family oriented.

My mother certainly is and so am I.

I guess eventually I'd love to settle
down and have a family of my own and

have maybe three or four kids.

Mom, you've been cooking all day?

Mm-hmm, all this morning.

I've been busy all morning.

Poor mama. Oh, poor mama.

This is enough spaghetti?

No, girela bene. Sia abbastanza per

I like speaking Italian with you,
mother. I miss it.

At the mansion, in the library, and in
the other situations that we shot, this

really seemed to lend itself best to the
kind of cropping that we use for a

gatefold. It was a tall, thin shot, and
she looks really good, and it seemed to

be one of the most attractive
situations.

Okay, Patty, I'm focusing now right on
your eyes.

Don't move. Everything looks good.

Let's shoot it. I felt nervous at first.

posing with all my clothes off.

But I got over it working with Ken
Marcus.

He really made me feel at ease.

And when I saw the photograph, I
realized, hey, it's really neat to see

yourself. It looks pretty good.

It kind of tickles me. You can see how
it's cropping.

The sleeve's got to come up on this. I
don't like that elbow.

It's going to work really nicely.

Look where I am today.

It's really unbelievable.

But no matter what, my family is still
important to me.

And that will never change.

Someday when I have grandkids, I'm going
to whip out my magazine and say, Hey,

your grandmother, she was a looker, and
don't you ever forget it.

Being a playmate...

didn't really hit me until I saw the
magazine.

For me, Playboy means opportunity.

I never dreamed that I could be a
playmate.

It's been a great experience and very
exciting.

I know I'll never forget it.

No, I'm sorry I really should start
paying more attention to Mary.

I

thought

it was wonderful being in the magazine
with a feeling that you can't really

describe.

I thought it went off the stands much
too fast.

I would have liked to have seen it hang
on another year or so.

I'm a great cook. I learn more out of
necessity than anything. When my parents

split up, I was about 10 years old, and
my mom was working all day long.

So I just went in the kitchen and
started building up my own dishes.

When you grow up in Texas, their food is
so different. The first time I went to

Chicago, I almost starved.

I derive pleasure out of almost
everything that I do.

One of my favorite things is to make a
breakfast special with candles and

champagne and orange juice and just fix
it all up and just please the person

who's eating with me.

I love to stay busy.

I have to stay busy.

I'm climbing the walls within an hour if
I'm not doing something, cleaning the

house, or I'm not playing racquetball or
swimming.

At the same time, I like really, really
simple things like walking through a

park when it's summertime.

I met Cal about a year and a half ago, I
guess now.

He's just a wonderful, wonderful man.

He taught me that you don't have to be
afraid to love somebody and to be able

to worry about them and cry with them
and laugh with them.

I think that Kim has grown a great deal
because of her involvement with Playboy.

I was very proud of her at the time the
magazine came out, and I think that it's

an accomplishment for her to be
recognized as one of the most beautiful

women in the world.

She's proud of me. Proud of the
centerfold, proud of the whole coverage

that Playboy has given her.

I like the feeling of friendly
competition, where you get with a friend

and you're sharing something together
that's physical and it's active.

That's what racquetball is.

I love winning, but if I lose, it makes
me try harder for the next round.

Losing is a teaching experience, just as
winning is. You have to learn how to

accept both of them.

You're certainly not going to be able to
interact with other people and deal with

them correctly.

After I've had a day of just running
completely all day long, I like to just

stop and think about something very slow
and easy, like walking through a park.

And then maybe a nice warm shower, a
glass of wine.

I love being sensual. I like the feeling
that I have when I'm in my favorite

nightgown and I've got a glass of wine
and I'm with my favorite person in front

of a fire. I like that. And if that's
sensual, then I think I am.

For my future, I think I would like to
go on learning more in the entertainment

field. I want the same country music,
and I would like to continue on acting.

Once I reach that level of fulfillment
to myself, then I think I'll marry a

nice man in Dallas and have kids.

After becoming a playmate, you learn
confidence. It's something that comes so

easily. You begin to feel differently
about yourself.

Vancouver is the most beautiful place in
the world if you love the outdoors.

So many mountains and trees and fresh
air. It's great.

I love the outdoors.

I love backpacking and camping because I
can really get my thoughts together and

be by myself.

I need to be by myself, and this is the
ideal place because there's so many

beautiful places that you can go to be
totally secluded, which is healthy for

me anyway.

I need it.

I have to have it.

Nudity and camping go together as far as
I'm concerned.

Being outdoors and natural, free, open,
love it.

It's a drag having to drive back into
the city and put my clothes back on.

I love to sing, and I love to perform.

I was with the Singing Playmates for
almost two years, and that was a

terrific experience.

I learned a lot, and I worked hard. All
the girls worked hard as a team.

We worked with some great people like
George Burns. What a wonderful man he

is. Now I'm trying it on my own solo.

Since I've been back

in Vancouver, I've had a chance to spend
more time with my family.

I feel that in the future we will be
spending more time together, and I'm

looking forward to it. I have a mother,
a father, and a younger sister. She's 14

months younger than myself.

My little sister, she's a sweetheart.
She's got a lot of brains.

I was always the kid in school that
always got the D's. She got straight A's

all through school.

I think she's proud of me becoming a
playmate, but I don't think it's

something that she could do herself.

The first time I decided to try out for
Playboy, I just walked up and I said,

Mom, what do you think if I decided to
try out for Playboy?

She said, go for it. And she thought it
was great. Actually, she lives her life

through my life.

So she gets kind of the kick out of it
too.

My father was a little bit more
difficult.

But now I understand the reason why he
reacted the way he did was because I was

getting myself into something that he
knew nothing about and he had no control

over. He was just worried about his
little girl.

And it makes me feel good.

Kelly and I had a very special
relationship.

Ever since she was about six or seven
years old, her and i could talk about

everything and anything i could almost
remove myself from the scene as her

father and relate to her just as another
person if she has a problem she can talk

to me about it and she's really so
honest like sometimes i'll ask her a

question and she'll say to me be sure
you want the answer to this and when i

get the answer i usually don't want it

We did a lot of things together.

Every weekend we did something together.
We'd go camping, fishing, just goofing

off, doing different things.

And that's the kind of relationship we
had.

Everybody in Vancouver loves the ocean.

Brian McLeod lives on the ocean. He
lives on a boat.

And as often as we can, we like to go
outside seeing and talk about the music

industry. It's a big influence, a big
help, and it's very supportive as far as

me pursuing my career.

I love getting out on the water and
looking at the city. It's gotten so

beautiful.

Skyliner Vancouver from the ocean is
breathtaking.

Vancouver as a city is very
sophisticated, and there's a lot of

fresh, young talent coming out of
Vancouver.

And I definitely want to pursue a
singing career in the future.

I do take advantage of the water.

I love swimming. I love being on the
water. I love water skiing, boating,

canoeing. It's so quiet.

You don't hear any noise at all, except
for the birds and the bees.

It's peaceful and private.

No matter where my career or my life
takes me, I will always live in

Vancouver.

Everything I live for is in Vancouver.

My friends, my family, everything that's
important to me.

I love to rough it, but occasionally I
do need to be pampered and have a bubble

bath and do my hair and my nails and
have a glamour fix.

But my simple feelings are the case And

For me, in my career, Dallas is a little
baby Hollywood.

To be established in a town like this is
wonderful because This is the boomtown

of a nation. This is the gold rush of a
nation.

And it is a great place to be right now.

I have a lot of fun when I go out with
my friends. I really do enjoy going into

the different places, seeing people I
know, talking with people.

I would consider myself a very
adventurous type person.

If I see something that looks fun to me,
as long as I see that it's not hurting

anyone else, if it looks fun.

See? Do it.

I got involved with Playboy when a man
in Dallas sent my pictures in from a

contest that I had won in 1980.

I was in my bikini and he sent them into
Chicago and I went to Chicago for the

test shooting and they accepted.

I recently came across a dance group
that is basically made up of dancers,

actors, actresses, singers.

They all have their everyday jobs, but
they have one thing in common.

They love to perform, and that's what we
do.

All right, stop the music. All right.

What I want to do is earn my own way on
my own and share my

benefits with my friends.

There's something I must say out loud.

You won't quiet

three times.

I consider myself a very optimistic
person.

Hey, you know, you're lucky for whatever
happened.

So I'm going to have fun right now. I'm
going to enjoy my life. Try to live it

to the fullest.

My beauty secret and secrets to anyone
else.

Inner happiness and peace.

The thing I like most about doing
promotions is meeting new people. Every

place is always different. And it gives
you a chance to get in contact with

these people and realize that these
girls have a lot of fans out there.

We have our own stage.

People come up and ask for autographs
and want to take pictures with you and

pose with my baby and Uncle Fred's dog.

But they're good people. I enjoy it. I
really do.

I was the one that initiated the whole
Playmate thing.

I decided to go out for it.

When I posed for the magazine, I didn't
even think about it.

Posing for Playboy was never a moral
decision for me. I just did it.

I'd studied it and looked at it too
long, and Playboy was so full of class.

I didn't have a desire to just do nude
photography.

That wasn't it. I had a desire to be in
Playboy, and I don't think I would have

settled for anything except Playboy.

It's nice when you get some time to get
away, to do something that's so totally

out of the ordinary.

I love camping. I love picnicking and
fishing, and I have the best of both

worlds. I have the busy life, and then I
also can drive 30 miles away from my

home and be in the middle of nowhere.

I kind of take everything one day at a
time.

I don't know what I'll be doing two or
three years from now. I'm just going to

kind of go with the flow and ride the
tide for a while and see what comes out

of it.

Modeling in Toronto, it was hard at
first, but it was challenging because

there was always new things to conquer
and new jobs to get.

When I became very successful, it became
a little less challenging and

interesting and I wanted something else
to do, but I wasn't quite sure what.

I'll never forget the unique way in
which I was introduced to Playboy.

I was on a television show in Toronto
called Thrill of a Lifetime.

It's a show about making people's dreams
come true.

My dream was to become a Playmate.

Well, the show sent a videotape to
Playboy of several girls who wanted to

become Playmates, and Playboy picked me.

My Thrill of a Lifetime came true, and
when it all started, it never stopped.

You're just so natural.

You really don't even need any
direction. I'll just shoot, you give me

the faces and the body.

It wasn't difficult for me to shoot with
Richard Fagley at all because he's a

great guy. He made me feel very
comfortable, and the staff in Chicago

was very helpful and professional, and
they know how you feel, and they're good

at handling that. It makes you feel very
comfortable. You're nervous at first,

and you get over it. It was wonderful.

I had a good time.

The things that have come my way in the
last year are things that I and probably

a hundred other girls have dreamed about
at one time or another.

And now I get a chance to start an added
segment of my dream, acting.

My new role in Falcon Crest gives me
that chance.

It's a good chance.

So is the rate of person that is beyond
our ability to respond. Just give me the

bottom line.

It's very confusing at first because
there's so many people to know how their

individual reactions are to you because
you see them as a group.

And all I can say is as a group, the
help that could be and the reactions

that I see are good.

They're not saying, Shannon, you're
good.

They're saying...

You could be good, and we'd like to help
you, and this is how we'd like to help

you. And that's all I need, to work
harder. They've given me a lot of

support. The cast, Jane Wyman and David
and Susan Sullivan, have been great

working with me for Playboy and on the
channel. They give their time freely,

and it's very unselfish of them, very
nice.

Tai Chi is a very, very grateful
movement of martial arts.

I see lots of similarities in the
Hawaiian tradition of Nihula and the

tradition of the islands, the grace and
the beauty, and I can tie it in with

practicing my Tai Chi every day.

Beautiful, graceful, and it's alive.

A couple of years ago, I heard about a
playboy hunt for the girls of Hawaii

Pictorial, and I always wanted to be a
playmate.

So I thought I'd go out for that hunt.

When they finally did ask me if I were
interested in being a playmate, it was

just chilled down my spine.

I was born in Honolulu, Hawaii and
raised in Haleiwa, and we still live

there. It was just a neat place because
we live right by the ocean.

Growing up in Haleiwa meant you grew up
in the country. You have a different

lifestyle. You even talk differently.

They have a more country accent than the
city people.

But that's what made us unique.

It's almost like living out on the outer
islands, but being on Oahu at the same

time.

At first, my mother didn't cut into the
idea of me appearing in Playboy. But

after seeing my picture in the Girls of
Hawaii pictorial, She looked at that and

thought, so that's what you look like.
If that's what you want to do, I'm all

for it. Because if I were 40 years
younger, maybe I might have tried for it

myself.

Being out in the ocean, especially
taking a dive underwater and putting

yourself in a different element will
always change your frame of mind.

I'm more at ease like watching a movie
and being part of it. It's cold and yet

the water rushing next to you is
soothing.

For the most part, I don't swim alone,
but sometimes it's a good feeling to

just get away from everyone because life
can be really frustrating when you're

trying to do too many things in one day
that you need to break away from it all.

Going to the beach and swimming in this
different environment adds that peace

that I'm looking for.

Living in Hawaii, you realize that there
are a lot of Chinese and Japanese,

Filipinos, just a great mixture, just
cosmopolitan here in Hawaii.

And our family is considered
cosmopolitan.

We're part Hawaiian, Filipino, Spanish,
and Polynesian.

Going to the beach was always a big
thing as we were growing up in Haleiwa.

And on the way home from the beach, The
necessary stop before going home was

Matsumoto Shave Ice.

Matsumoto Shave Ice with ice cream and
black beans.

The store itself has been there, I
think, for 35 years. And under the same

ownership, the building hasn't changed
much.

Maybe paint job over paint job.

Lots of graffiti in the windows. Thank
you.

Everyone loves it.

I bore 20 children.

Lottie was the 19th one. All her
brothers and sisters really loved her

because she was jolly all the time, you
know.

And one of them said, maybe someday, you
know, that girl's going to be a model.

And then when she got older...

And was in camp school, she asked me and
the father if she could go to Barbizon

School of Modeling.

So father said, it's all right.

And then I was against it for a while,
you know. And then I talked it over with

the sisters.

Oh, you should let her go, you know.

At least somebody in the house can do
it.

So since everybody talked me into her
going, I said, okay.

As for me, I'm really broad-minded, and
that's what she wants,

to be in Playboy.

That's her.

But if the father was alive, he will not
say yes.

In our house, we've always had a piano.
It may not have been the best, but we

grew up with an upright Wurlitzer, and
everyone either learned to play the

piano or some sort of instrument.

I started to play the piano when I was
maybe five, and the way I did that was

by watching my brothers and sisters.

A couple of them would play by music,
but most of us played by ear. I learned

to play some of the neatest.

Old pieces just by listening to my
brothers and sisters.

Classical music has always been my
favorite.

And I enjoy playing by ear.

What sounds really pretty, I'll play it.

Because I enjoy classical music, I think
of soft things.

Maybe rain, the wind.

Just a lush tropical forest and some
wind blowing in the trees.

I think of lots of things while I play
the piano.

It's a great form of letting go of
frustration.

You can bang it as loud as you want, or
you can play it soft and gentle.

It's a neat way of expressing myself.

I haven't really changed much from the
first time I met the people from

Playboy.

I think it's almost every girl's dream
to be like a starlet for one particular

month. If it could last forever.

That would just be great. But for one
month, being a girl that everyone talks

about and rants and raves about and
sends letters about is a thrilling

feeling.

Being a playmate has been a fantasy type
thing.

It's not that you're a totally different
person, but they just make you glow.

And then to work with the photographers
and stuff, it's been just an exciting

experience.

The things I really enjoy about living
in the country, it's just a very wide

-open, fresh feeling.

I don't mind L.A., but it's just
something different.

You know, there's two worlds, and I
don't prefer either one.

If I need to, I know it's always here.

My mom's been involved with horses all
her life.

And so when I was eight months old and
able to sit up on my own, she put me on

the front of the saddle, and it just
kept going from there. Got my own pony,

and we've been through so many horses
just as you grow. It's been all my life.

She's never held anything back from us.
If we have a question, no matter how

personal, on...

Sex, religion, drugs, anything, we know
we can walk right up to her and ask her

right to her face, and she's going to
tell us the truth.

She's just been a support.

Whatever projects us kids wanted to be
into, say my horses, my modeling, she'd

just say, okay, let's go for it. Just
give it a shot. If it doesn't work, we

can try again, or it's just not for you.
And that's what I've needed, being shy.

I needed somebody strong behind me to
help me get over it.

Well, I feel really good about Linda
posing for Playboy.

The whole family's behind her 100%.
We've always been a real close family,

and we kind of enjoy this.

We've rode together.

I've sewed wardrobe for her. Her
modeling has always come first with her

and the family. We're just really very
happy for her.

She comes down from Yellow Mountain.

On a dark flat land she rides.

On a pony she named Wildfire.

I started out in 4-H, and I did a lot of
competition from about the age of eight

up until just a few years ago.

And I went through all phases of
horseback riding, Western, English,

rodeo, three-day event, everything. I
wanted to learn everything there was

about riding. Instead of babysitting in
high school, I trained horses and gave

lessons. So it's just been a part of my
life.

Not real tight.

My mom, she's been designing for me ever
since I can remember.

When I was a real tiny, she would buy a
couple yards and make herself a dress.

And with the half yard left over, I'd
get a new dress. And for school, we

could never afford a lot of different
dresses. But to make them, I could have

every color dress I wanted.

And as I got older, I needed different
dresses, say, for certain occasions.

prom dresses and the homecoming dresses,
all were made by her. And it was a

special feeling because that dress was
mine.

It was me.

I like it.

There's a place behind her house called
Black Canyon.

It's a natural rock swimming hole.

And it's on a mountain like, so it's all
running downhill.

And what you hear is quiet, birds, the
water.

And there's usually no one there and you
can be alone.

You can just do or be whoever you want.
It's just totally relaxing and there's

no one telling you what to do.

You can just lie in the sun and just see
what you want.

when I try to fake it no

That's why I'm easy.

I'm easy like Sunday morning.

My mom is super special to me. When we
go riding, it's a chance to, you know,

to work the horses for sure, but it's
also a chance for us to talk, to know

each other, because we work all day,
never get to see each other until night,

and you get tired.

But when we ride, we can loosen up a bit
and talk about our troubles or our

aspirations, you know, our goals.

And she's always been the one who can
put my feet on the ground again.

I've had my moments when I start to get
really fat-headed, and my brothers and

my mom always knock me down.

They tell me where my roots are, where
I'm supposed to be, and it puts a whole

perspective on things, and I can respect
her.

And we talk about things like that, and
just life in general.

there's meadows and it's green i want to
raise horses i want to raise dogs i want

to raise sheep and i want to raise kids
in an atmosphere that is totally like I

grew up in. I can't see raising animals

train horses all day and have my dogs.

Being in Playboy has changed my life
considerably.

I was on the cover and the centerfold,
and seeing my cover next to Time and

Newsweek and other magazines was very
exciting and something that

you just can't really describe unless
you've been there.

I just loved it.

I like to take long showers, maybe
half-hour showers.

And they're a whole lot more fun when I
can have somebody in there with me.

And on the special occasions when
somebody is in the shower with me, I

must say that they go on for a lot
longer than half an hour, maybe three or

four or five hours, until the water goes
cold.

Then it gets even more fun.

When I exercise, I stretch and it
loosens up your body and when I start to

feel loose and free, I feel very trapped
when I have clothes on.

So what I like to do is work out in a
place where nobody else is around and

when I start getting warmed up and
feeling loose, I like to take my clothes

off.

It allows my body to be much more free.

That's when I'm my happiest.

I'm free and I'm naked. I love both.
