When Captain America throws his mighty shield, of those who chose to oppose his shield,

but shield, if he's led to a fight and a duel is due, then the reds and the whites

and the blue will come through when Captain America throws his mighty shield.

Gathered around our hero are three of his fighting partners as Captain America relates

his wartime experiences.

Your story about Red Skull was quite a spellbinder, Cap.

I told it just as it happened.

But as private Steve Rogers, didn't you get into trouble

when you changed your identity to Captain America?

Remember, Wanda, Army Intelligence knew that Captain America and Private Rogers were one

and the same.

That same night as Captain America once again becomes Steve Rogers,

he recalls his deadliest enemy many years ago.

And as he tries to sleep, he cannot forget the most hated,

the most fiendish face of all, the Red Skull.

You fool.

The final battle has not been fought.

The fruits of victory shall be mine.

Then in his memory, Steve Rogers returns to the fateful day 20 years before

when he fought his last battle in the Red Skull's hidden bunker.

Destroy him, don't let him get away.

He can't escape me now, not when I've come so close.

Stop him, you fools.

And a cursed shield.

Bullets have no effect on it.

You will never win.

You cannot destroy my plan.

This will do it.

I'll finish you off with a simple hand grenade.

I've got to stop him from throwing that grenade.

He's still alive.

I'm not beaten yet.

My invincible sleepers will carry on for me.

Sleepers?

Even now, they lay hidden somewhere in Europe,

waiting for the signal 20 years from now when they will awake.

What are the sleepers?

Where are they hidden?

Talk, talk.

There are three sleepers.

And when they awake 20 years from now,

the Red Skull will rise again.

Now I realize what's been bothering me.

It's 20 years today, a metal box, the one I took from Red Skull.

At last, I know what it contains, a list of agents,

each given the task of awakening a sleeper on the day of the signal.

That same evening in a small, isolated Bavarian village.

Why should von Kemmer have sent for us on such a night?

Von Kemmer, is that uniform?

We have come as you ordered.

Silence, you boy, the time has come, the Red Skull shall live again.

Are we not undertaking a dangerous mission?

Fear not, off to tonight this land and the world shall be ours.

Halt, we have reached our destination.

You will find wheels of cable hidden in those bushes, unbinders strictly.

Now, hold hard, that boulder is set in a special hinge.

Now, nothing can stop the sleeper from awakening.

Watch, and you will see the first of three sleepers.

Listen, sounds like footsteps.

No footsteps can be so loud.

The sleepers can't.

Run, now to the sleeper box, there is no way to stop it.

But at that very moment, many thousands of feet above the heart of Bavaria.

This is the area mentioned with the first name on Red Skull's list, whoever or whatever

the sleeper may be, I hope I'm not too late.

People heading away from town with all their belongings, that earth-shattering sound must

be what they're fleeing from, like giant footsteps in the distance.

It's coming from that town just ahead.

I'm on the right track, but to what?

The sound is ear-shattering, almost on top of me, and coming closer.

It's deafening.

A giant, rampaging robot, his controls seem to be encased within his head assembly.

If I can just smash them with a blow for my shield, it's no use.

The covering is shadowproof.

Those electrodes are pointed right at me.

There's no escape from him.

Nothing stops him.

He's walking right past me.

The Red Skull said his three sleepers would carry on after he was gone.

This one must be going to rendezvous with the other two, and there's no way I can stop him.

At that very moment in the town of Telbeck...

This is Agent Two.

The time has come.

The second sleeper must awaken.

The Red Skull shall leave again.

He's headed for a rendezvous with a second sleeper, and there's no way I can prevent

it.

Or is there?

Although I haven't the strength to stop him, perhaps that giant boulder balanced precariously

above can turn the trick.

If I can just strike it at the exact balancing point with my shield...

It worked!

He's completely buried under all that rubble.

But I've got to make sure he'll stay trapped permanently.

What's that?

He's still dangerous, even under tons of rock.

He's unscathed.

He freed himself with ease in seconds.

What's wrong with me?

I'm beginning to think of it as a living thing.

It's just a machine.

But a machine that must be stopped before it joins the other two sleepers.

I'm accomplishing nothing by following after him.

Wait.

There's an army base not far from here, equipped with heavy weapons.

Missiles!

If I can reach it in time, over there, just what I need, a motorcycle.

I shouldn't reach the army base within an hour, and I needn't worry about not finding

a sleeper again.

There's no place that such a gigantic walking nightmare can possibly hide.

The only problem now is, can the sleeper be stopped?

Even by a missile?

Meanwhile, in a lonely forest nearby, a woman known only as Agent Two watches a small detail

of diggers at work.

Why won't you tell us what it is we dig for?

You will know when you come to it.

Keep digging.

Agent Two.

We have found something with a large knob on it.

Should we remove it?

No!

It is just what the red skull prophesied we would find.

Take your shovel and strike it.

Hard.

She is surely mad, but she pays us well.

Instantly, incredibly, the whole countryside begins to reverberate.

And then, as the smoke clears, we see the outline of a giant crater, a crater which had been

dug 20 years ago for this mystifying, monstrous moment.

When from out of the depths, an object rises slowly from the pit, an awesome object, which

can only be the second sleeper, which can be struck like a gigantic devil bat.

It casts its sinister shadow over the helpless countryside below, as it skims through the

silent skies on its mission of menace, a tremendous explosion in the distance.

Can the second sleeper have awakened so soon?

Made it!

But I can't hold on.

The ground is too slippery, nothing to grab on to.

No, it must not end like this.

Someone's got to warn the world about the sleepers.

Someone's got to find a way to stop them.

They won't be beaten by a shattered log.

I won't.

If I can just use my shield for leverage, some sort of enormous flying object skimming

over the town.

First, the explosion.

Now, listen.

That can only be the second sleeper.

It's no more alive than the first sleeper, but its powers are staggering.

Those twin horn-like objects are emitting some sort of powerful force, uprooting trees,

tossing houses about like a tornado.

The sleeper's power is beyond belief.

I'll never make it to army headquarters now.

I've seen the first sleeper, and this is the second.

What can the third be like?

Only one chance.

I'll stop resisting and let myself be pulled up by the force of the air vacuum.

Now, now, if I can just grab that wing, made it.

What happens next is anybody's guess, but one thing is certain, I've got to figure out

some way of pulling this metal monster's claws.

It's cruising slowly, cautiously, searching for something while it tests its power.

Over there, just as I feared, that's what it must have been searching for.

In some fantastic predetermined manner, the second sleeper is going to join forces with

a first sleeper.

I was right.

The two deadly behemoths are now irrevocably linked together.

Only the red skull could have conceived such a mind-staggering plan.

The first sleeper is far more menacing than ever, for he's actually gained the power of

life.

Now, all that remains is for them to join the third, and here I am, witness to the entire

terrifying tableau, yet powerless to stop it.

Army jets, they're about to attack, but they can't see me.

I'm just a blur to them.

Now, they're circling back to launch their supersonic missiles.

I've got to leap off before those missiles hit me.

They didn't put a dent.

What happens next?

Does this mean nothing can stop the sleepers?

Look, someone crashed through security.

It's Captain America.

Hold and be recognized.

I've got to reach General Ogan before the third sleeper joins the other two.

That joker's not stopping for anything.

Let's track him.

He's like a tiger, pile on him.

Grab a shield.

Captain, sir.

What's going on here?

It's General Ogan.

On your feet.

All of you.

I'm sorry, General.

I guess they got carried away by the danger that threatens.

They know just squat there, mister.

Report.

Even as the battle-wise general takes command, villagers begin to clog the roads, fleeing

from the diabolical menace the red skull created 20 years ago, the menace of the sleepers.

As of this moment, two sleepers have already risen and become as one.

The gigantic walking sleeper has gained the ability to fly by linking up with the dreaded

back-wing sleeper.

And now, they soar above the helpless countryside, testing their awesome powers as they await

the final linkage with the unknown third sleeper.

As I see it, its purpose seems to be to wipe out the entire human race.

This is how the first and second sleepers have linked together.

There seems to be a space still vacant here at the top.

It can only mean the third sleeper is the brain.

I have Red Skull's list of three towns.

The third must be the one where the final linkage will occur.

Oh, it sounds like a great B-movie plot to me.

But if General Logan buys it--

You'll bet your brass buttons I buy it.

Logan talking.

Put a fully equipped task force at the disposal of Captain America.

And when he gives an order, I want action.

Then satisfied that the red, white, and blue Avenger has all the firepower that he needs,

the Peppery General takes personal command of his most potent armored division, as he

blankets the area with a cordon of fighting men and machines.

Later one, 200 hawks, objective in sight, let him have it.

While in a slumbering town not far away, another agent of the Red Skull, after patiently waiting

for two decades, is about to complete the diabolical master plan.

All I need to do is turn this raised letter 10 degrees to the right.

A gigantic mechanical head, which seems to resemble the Red Skull himself, rises upwards,

propelled by powerful high pressure air fans.

There to await the coming of the other two sleepers, and then, high in the sky, the final

linkage takes place.

We're too late.

The three sleepers have finally joined forces.

I hope I'm wrong, General, but unless I miss my guess, that third sleeper, in the shape

of a sinister steel head, is really a gigantic bomb.

Even if you're correct, what can one bomb do against all our armed might?

The Red Skull always threatened that if he couldn't conquer the world, he would destroy

it with one bomb?

How, man?

Remember, his sleepers have the power of flight, as well as enough force rays to fend off any

attack we can make.

That means it has the power to reach whatever objective it was programmed for.

Notice how it's been heading on a course due north?

What of its ultimate goal is the North Pole itself?

Think of the awesome possibilities.

Once over the Pole, its rays could blast the path down to the very center of the Earth.

Then, when the sleeper reaches its goal, the unbearable heat at the planet's core would

cause the bomb to ignite, setting off an endless chain reaction of atomic explosions that would

finally cause the entire surface of the Earth to shatter like an eggshell.

But that's only a wild guess.

How can you be sure that such a catastrophe was the Red Skull's intention?

I can't be sure.

But do we dare shut our eyes to the grim possibility?

What in blazes are you doing now?

I have a plan.

All I need is this flamethrower and a lot of luck.

Stand back, sir.

One chance is all I'll get.

Open bomb bay doors.

Hold course due north.

We're on target.

Geronimo!

Got it.

Standing now.

I've got to reach the skull and then affix the flamethrower at just the right angle.

A little further and I'll have it.

There.

It's all set.

Now if I can just keep hiding the air pressure until the nozzle ignites.

I did it.

Now all I need is time.

Can I hurl myself to safety before the end comes?

There.

It's beginning to sputter.

The next two seconds will show whether I've failed or--

It's over.

The sleepers are gone forever.

The world still belongs to the brave and the just and the free.
