We are here in my hometown
of Columbus, Georgia,

one of the most haunted
cities of the Southeast.

While Columbus is where
this episode story ends,

it isn't where it begins.

Across the roaring Chattahoochee
River from Columbus is

Phoenix City, Alabama,
also once known as Sin City.

In the 1940s, organized
crime, prostitution,

and gambling ran amuck
on all sides of the river,

thanks to the infamous Dixie Mafia.

Mafia in the South?

How was that? Wow.

Many people have reported
that deep into the night

while out of the river, they
suddenly heard nothing

as if someone hit a
mute button on the river

or the world itself,

until suddenly, a splash.

The butcher would dismember
the bodies of his victims,

wrap them in butcher paper

and toss 'em into burlap sacks like this

and deposit them into the river like this.

[Disgruntled Woman] Hey,
what are your girls doing?

The tunnels run under the city,

and were once designed for
much less gruesome purposes.

Many people over the years
have reported hearing the sounds

of squeaky wheels, the butcher.

polar bears in Alabama?"

And I was like, I hit those brakes

and I'm like, "What do you mean?"

She said, "Well, last night,

I come out here about 2:30 in the morning

on the front porch."

And she said, "I looked over,"

and she said there was a...

She said, well, only thing
she could describe was,

it looked like a polar bear.

And she knew nothing about Bigfoot,

couldn't care nothing about Bigfoot.

Wouldn't listen to me. You know what?

She just wasn't interested in it.

But for her to see this,

that was the only thing

that come to her mind, was a polar bear.

We saw an eye shine in the woods.

There were two of them, and
they were about this far apart.

And it was almost like
some creature was peering

behind a tree

and occasionally you
would only see one eye,

and then you would see two.

My grandmother seen something looking

in her window one night.

She didn't have very good details.

She just said there was two
big eyes staring in the window.

she called the chicken man

that was stealing eggs
and chickens from her.

You hear that in a lot of other areas too,

that they come and steal eggs and chickens.

And it sounded like
he was right next to me.

growled at me, it hit me.

And the way that it made me feel,

it's like the best way to explain,

it's like people say like, a
lion at the zoo could roar

and you can feel it in your chest,

I felt like it touched me, like it hit me,

and went through me
and it turned me around.

Like I didn't have any reaction
time to think, you know?

And she said it was white,
and she could see down.

She said, but when it got down to the legs,

she said they were kind of a dirty orange.

She said, sort of like maybe

a Labrador retriever gets in the mud

and their legs kind of get orange looking.

So they move quick

and they're always like
really fleeting sightings

but do you think that they want to be seen?

I think that they do not want to be seen,

but they definitely want to see you

and know where you're at.

Was there ever a time
where you really doubted

that this was a real thing?

I don't know if there was a time,

but you do play it back
and forth in your head.

Like, I know, I feel like
I know what I've seen

when I was eight,

you wanna see it again to
have an absolute validation.
