The story we're about to tell you is a
true one.

It's the story of the making of a motion
picture.

In this handsome house in the exclusive
East 60s, three men met some months ago

to plan a film.

At the conference were the writer, the
producer, and the director.

I'll tell you, boys, somehow I got a
feeling this will be a good picture.

Eddie and I went over the whole story
together, Joe.

We changed a few things here and there.

When do you want to get this picture
done, Joe?

Are we going to be rushed or is it going
to be like Hollywood, sitting around a

pool for six months?

Six months?

Look, Bobby, you're lucky you get six
weeks.

But, Joe, are we all set on the leading
characters of the film?

I mean, do we all agree on who they are,
what they are, what they do, and so on?

I'll tell you what we'll do.

Let's get a character profile of our
leading people.

First, our lead, Liz Adams, a
dark-haired, beautiful girl.

She's come to New York hoping for a big
chance in the theater.

The part of Liz Adams is played by Lana
Lynn, the exciting young actress who's

appeared in many TV series, as well as
many motion pictures where her beauty

was a great asset.

Liz Adams finds that she becomes
involved most willingly with a horde of

men as she tries to move up from
hamburger stands to the luxuries which

she feels she should have.

Unfortunately for Liz, she's something
of an infomaniac.

She thinks of herself as an expert on
sex. When Liz touches a man or is about

to become involved with one, she can't
get enough of him.

For a girl trying to work her way up in
the theater, this can be a help or a

hazard. Connie Mason.

Sweet, lovable.

The type of girl everyone would like to
come home to.

She's a girl of fine figure and face.

Playing the part of Connie Mason is that
well-known beauty queen from Texas, Miss

Rusty Allen.

Connie Mason is a fine girl.

whose main goal in New York is to find
the future father of her children.

Connie goes to two kinds of parties, the
proud and the profane.

As she walks down the street, men stop
to turn and stare.

They'd be surprised to know that she
likes nothing better than playing with

children and listening to symphonies.

Connie Mason, the ingenue of our film.

Barry Coleman, a bright, serious fellow
hoping to get ahead in the world.

The part of Barry is played by Ken
Curtin.

a young actor who's appeared in several
European films in roles requiring great

range of expression and nuance of style.

Baxter Standish, young actor and singer.

In this film, the part of Baxter is that
of a lover as well as an actor.

Anthony Ford, a young drama student,
plays this role with the authority of

first-hand experience.

In the film, Baxter is just one of the
many men drawn to Liz Adams.

In her need for men, she does not turn
down their advances.

The men she gets involved with, like
Baxter, are those who function in the

little world she's built for herself.

The daily contact of flesh on flesh,
even though it's supposed to be make

-believe, can cause suppressed passions
to boil to the surface, to expose

everyone around to the stirring effects
of morality gone wild.

When Baxter and Liz touch, a spark
flashes, which is soon extinguished when

another man comes along and makes a new
rule in the game of love.

Douglas Baines, director of the Leslie
Carter Theater.

Doug Baines is a man of great talent in
New York's theatrical world.

One day, he'll be a top Broadway figure.

Right now, he's a ladies' man as well as
a fine director.

The part is played by John Lyon, also an
experienced actor whom Hollywood has

beckoned several times.

At the theater, Doug Baines is in a
position to meet hundreds of lovely

girls, but this one really gets under
his skin.

He determines to find out all he can
about the girl.

what her views of the theater are and
her views about life and love.

She's such a delicious and delectable
creature, he can't keep his hands off

her. And she doesn't want him to.

Leslie Carter, millionaire, sportsman,
patron of the arts, is a man with the

essential things in life. Money,
apartments, beach houses, girls, money,

girls, girls, and even more money. He
works hard and he plays hard.

The role is portrayed by Lonnie Maggio,
who's making his motion picture debut.

Maggio is a throwback to the days of
Bogart.

Women are important to Carter, and Liz
seems to give him a jolt whenever he

looks at her. As the owner of the Leslie
Carter Theater, he can watch rehearsals

whenever he wants to.

From the first play kiss with Liz,
Carter knows that he wants this girl.

The shrewdest, most cunning girl will
become a piece of putty at the sight of

an overfed wallet.

And so on with the story.

Liz Adams has already laid her plans in
her mind.

It's the theater as the swiftest way to
money and influence.

Yes?

Yes, this is Connie Jackson.

Oh, it's a lovely apartment. It has air
conditioning and lots of nice touches.

Good, I'll see you then.

Well, this is it. Hey, this is very
nice.

I like it.

Can I see the rest of the apartment?

Sure.

Don't look in my closet, though. It's a
mess.

That's my shameful secret.

The kitchen's over this way.

Oh, an espresso machine.

No, that's an old milk can. I think.

Whatever it is, I think it's beautiful.

Anyway, I'd better tell you about
myself.

Now, don't snore at night.

And I don't even mess in the bathroom,
and I'm a pretty good cook. And if it's

all right with you, I'd like to move in
today.

Fine.

Shake, roommate. Fine.

A good omen of things to come.

First day she tries to get a place and
this fine apartment turns up.

Nice apartment, nice roommate.

Now she can get down to business.

Back to the apartment with just the
basic clothes a girl needs for the

initial weeks in New York.

Liz can't wait to start filling up her
closet with all the fine clothes which

are available to pretty girls.

Maybe if she's lucky, someone else will
pick up the tab.

But a girl has to rest before she runs.

This Connie seems a swell kid to Liz.

She's even given her a whole closet for
herself.

When a girl does that, why, you've found
a real jewel.

Liz realizes Connie could give her a run
for her money if they ever had eyes for

the same man.

But they'll work things out.

There are enough men to go around.

Liz figures as long as Connie stays out
of her affairs, she'll do the same for

Connie, and they'll be able to get along
great.

Tonight, Liz gets to the bathtub first.
Before long, the girls will have to work

out some kind of arrangement.

And let's hope Liz washes the tub when
she's through with it. Connie likes

rings, as any girl does, but on her
fingers, not in her bathtub.

And as for stockings, it's okay to let
them dry in the bathroom, but Liz had

better get them on her legs or in the
drawer when they're dry.

Connie likes a ship-shaped living
arrangement, and there's no money for

maid service.

It's bright and early for the girls the
next morning.

Connie's got a job to get to, and Liz
can't see any sense in wasting the sun.

There's a whole new world waiting for
her out there.

Thus far, the producer, the director,
and the writer have been able to begin

their character outline.

But it always happens that as you get
into the story, you have to take stock

of what's happening to your characters.

They knew that Connie was a beauty, they
knew she was a serious-minded girl, and

they knew that she had a pretty good
job. But what kind of career should she

have?

There's a run on bikinis this season at
the showroom.

It gives the boys a chance to display
Connie's beautiful figure.

Wait. Connie's our good girl. She should
be more covered up.

People are more broad-minded today.

If it's an innocent situation as this
is, she could even be nude.

Although, in effect, Connie was the
heroine of the story, the men found

themselves fascinated by Liz.

Men are always attracted by dangerous
women.

Today, she's got some time to kill, so
she goes down to Greenwich Village.

This city within a city is a place of
many contrasts. By day, it's a simple

place where old women sun themselves and
children play in the parks.

Liz is enchanted by the scene before
her.

She's also a bit surprised.

Where are the so-called outcasts she's
heard so much about? By day, the people

she's looking for are probably sleeping
off the previous night's merriment.

Liz marvels that this could really be
New York.

Innocent-looking kids running around
trying to escape the heat of the city.

Old men playing chess and checkers.

She decides that she should have come to
New York much sooner.

However, for a girl like Liz, enough
kids are enough.

Now off for a pursuit of faster game, if
there's any to be found.

She instinctively seems to head for the
main artery of unrestricted village

nightlife. Somehow girls like Liz have a
sixth sense for nosing out such places.

At night, this street explodes with the
gaiety of thousands of native villagers

and accompanying tourist crowds.

Wild scenes of merriment are likely to
be taking place at any one of these drab

-looking buildings.

Liz is somewhat exhausted by all the
walking, so she takes a cup of coffee

and hopes in a way that some bearded
villager will pick her up.

Coffee there, franks and orange drink
here.

Liz is determined to see if she can
promote a little adventure today.

This is all an intoxicating experience
for Liz.

What a place, she thinks. Kids, culture
and sex, all in one neighborhood.

Still haven't seen any
suspicious-looking people, she thinks.

For a second, she wonders if the stories
are a lot of hot air.

Today, on her first day in the village,
Liz is unaware that this is really just

a small-town neighborhood, and the
straight people living and working here

far outnumber the oddball who give the
village its sordid reputation.

Still, she knows that down here is where
she's going to get her big chance when

she goes to see the director the
following day.

She knows that shortly...

A girl with her looks is going to be
swept into the full round of exciting

and sensuous activities.

What about Barry?

Oh, you mean Cully's boyfriend?

He's an up-and-coming young
photographer.

Shoots still lives.

Maybe shoots girls.

Now there's Barry now in his studio.

Lots of professional equipment. Just the
thing to go far in this business.

Oh, that's a lovely young lady. She's
very nice. Oh, yes. I like her. Very

good. Well, what's she doing here? Isn't
she supposed to come in later in the

story? Get around.

By now, the story was rolling along in
the minds of the men.

They delineated their main characters,
Liz Adams, Connie Mason, her boyfriend

Barry, and the others.

After a hard day under the bright studio
lights, it's really relaxing to take a

stroll with a beautiful girl into the
little food shops and wine stores, and a

meal can be planned worthy of a French
chef.

Connie's a good cook.

After all, she's hoping to get married
someday.

Maybe Barry will be the lucky guy.

It's a pleasant surprise for Barry to
discover that he'll have dinner with two

beautiful girls instead of only one.

Liz likes what she sees in Barry, and
she knows her roommate won't mind if she

does a little innocent flirting.

What could happen?

Connie's right there, and Liz hasn't
danced in ages.

But girls are funny sometimes.

An inch too close to her boyfriend, and
Connie's beginning to wonder about this

new roommate of hers.

Did she make a mistake?

Or is she just being overcautious?

The next day was the big one for Liz.

She had her photo, her resume, and her
letter of introduction, and she hoped

that today might be the beginning of a
glorious career in the theater.

It was like entering some great temple
for Liz, and the first thing you know,

she passed a charming fellow, probably
an actor from the looks of him.

Douglas Baines, the director of the
theater.

He'd built quite a reputation for
himself, and had also discovered a

number of promising young actresses.

When Liz came in, he was amused.

She seemed frightened of him.

Silly girl.

Doug wanted to be helpful.

Liz showed him her photos.

And he wondered about all the experience
she had listed on the back of it.

But she insisted that she'd done a lot
of acting in her hometown and also had

done a lot of summer stock.

So she wasn't entirely a beginner.

And if Baines would give her a chance,
she'd show him she knew a thing or two

about acting.

Some girls are sure about their talents,
and Liz had no qualms about blowing her

own horn.

She read a few lines for Doug.

And she sounded okay.

Even without rehearsal.

He introduced her to Baxter, a young
actor in the company.

Then Douglas sent them off to work in a
scene.

She was in.

Now Liz hopes to begin her long climb to
the heights of stardom.

First, the off-Broadway theater, then
on-Broadway, and the first-night critics

hailing her as one of the greats. And
then Hollywood itself.

Millions of dollars to earn, millions of
fans to worship her.

Nothing would stop her now.

The men were in high gear now.

Their characters were taking shape.

They knew that Connie was deceptive in a
way.

Such beauty, a kind of ethereal thing
you would expect in some legendary

character like Snow White.

Yet the reality of it all was that she
was a living, breathing girl.

She had the normal appetites of a normal
girl, and an outlook that was modern

without being in any possible way
immoral.

As a bathing suit model, this girl would
come under the eyes of many men.

who would be under the impression that
she was an easy mark.

But great beauty does not go with great
looseness of moral fiber.

No, Connie had found out that modeling
could bring her the greatest income for

a girl of her education.

At the showroom, she often had occasion
to exhibit her semi-nude body to a room

full of buyers, both male and female.

But Connie, although propositioned
several times a day, was scornful of the

passes made at her.

She knew that one of these days a fellow
would really love her.

and asked her to become his wife.

By day, she's a sexy figure, modeling
bathing suits so that the women of the

nation can attract their future
husbands.

By night, instead of being the
gallivanting playgirl, Connie's more

likely to sit at home doing her nails
and hair.

Sure, I'd love to do a set of nudes for
your magazine.

Have you got anything special in mind?

Violent and passionate females, eh?

Sure, those kind of girls are just my
meat.

Uh, I know a few girls who look like
they're ready for love at any hour of

the day.

I'll mess up their hair a little, set
them against some bright colors, and,

man, I'll claw their way right out of
the pages.

Right, I'll line up the girls right
away.

You'll have some proofs the beginning of
next week.

Right, okay.

Bye-bye, Mr. Stronsky.

At this point, the creative men felt
that a little time should be spent

following up what happened to Liz and
Baxter.

But it says here in the script that
she's dressed in a slip.

You want to take your dress off?

Ah, the big bad city wolf.

Okay, but remember it's only a play.

You got nothing to worry about. I used
to be a boy scout.

That's what I call living theater.

It seemed that Liz was off to a flying
start on her ladder of conquest.

If that was only a rehearsal, the actual
performance at the theater should really

be something.

Doug was tremendously impressed with
Liz.

She was a natural, it seemed to him.

The part of the sensual southern girl
was really cut out for her.

Somehow he had the feeling that the
dark, tempestuous looks of the girl were

echoed in her own personal emotions.

He looked at Baxter and laughed.

So he thinks he has first call on the
girl, does he?

Well, Doug may be serious about the
theater and all that, but he's still a

human being.

When a girl like Liz comes along who
seems to be amenable to a little

intimate conversation, Doug would be a
fool not to pull rank.

After all, there's a lot of polishing
the aspiring young actress needs.

Douglas Baines is no naive, phony stage
director.

He's a hard worker, a craftsman, and an
up-and-coming force in the theater.

Aside from the satisfactions of doing a
good job with the cast, Doug takes

advantage of another gift which is
available to him at all times.

Girls.

Dozens of them. Lovely, sylph-like
things in some cases.

Dark, brooding females in other cases.

Doug likes his work.

When a girl like Liz seems to be ready
to pass out her favors, why should Doug

deny himself?

Sure, he's a serious fellow, but there's
also time for play.

Liz Adams is next on his list, and he
knows that his instincts are not wrong.

This is a girl with a driving ambition
which will get her either to the top of

a heap or plunge her into assorted
obscurity.

Doug is a master at working on a girl.

For him, the supreme pleasure is not in
the conquest of a girl's emotions.

That's for truck drivers.

No, Doug is cut from a different piece
of lumber.

First, the gentlemanly approach.

A sharing of the beauties of nature.

A mutual awareness of the glories of
civilized living.

Of soaring architecture.

Of swift cars.

Of fine food and drink.

Let the girl know that her mind and
intellect are appreciated.

Every girl has a basic set of female
equipment.

It's stupid to pay too direct attention
to it.

That's okay with girls who never have a
date.

It flatters them.

But girls like Liz are different.

From the time they first became women,
Liz's type has known what it is to be

run after by boys.

When they hit the age of 21, it doesn't
impress them to be pawed and mooned

over.

Doug knows this, and he stopped making
mistakes long ago.

His secrets for getting a girl to play
ball are fundamental to all

sophisticated men.

First, politeness.

Even the communist girl likes to believe
she's a princess in her man's eyes.

Secondly... Doug suits the conversation
to the girl's interests and knowledge.

If she knows nothing about the theater,
then he only talks about it from a

general viewpoint.

Who he knows, what the critics say about
him, what his hopes and ambitions are.

That way, the girl feels that she
contributes to the conversation without

showing her ignorance.

If the girl's an actress like Liz, Doug
gets a little technical.

He talks about theatrical interpretation
and all the other nuances of talk which

will lead the girl into expressing her
own opinions.

Then he tells her about his future
plans.

Sooner or later, the girl will get the
idea that maybe she can move up in the

world.

Doug was already impressing Liz.

He hinted at big things to come if Liz
played her cards right.

But he was never vulgar or direct.

In addition, Doug acts as the worldly
host.

He shows the girl the city and spends
money on her without being ostentatious.

The tour of Central Park was a
revelation to Liz.

What a beautiful city to have come to.

At the fashionable St. Moritz Hotel,
facing Central Park, Doug is known by

the head waiter.

This may seem like a questionable point
of pride, but it hints at his being a

man about town.

It also tells Liz that Doug has been
here before, probably with other pretty

girls. She wonders if they're still
around.

She also wonders if they're in the
running for any leads in Doug's plays.

As the evening wears on into early
night, Doug decides that it's time to

begin closing the net around the
mermaid.

He's already forced from talking about
cultured things.

Now it's time to bring this new
relationship up to a more serious level.

He must discuss her coming career in
more specific terms.

Liz does not object.

In fact, she's been wondering when this
guy's going to stop talking and get down

to business.

You know, my dear, with a few
connections and a push in the right

direction, Liz, you could make it big.

That would be great.

What about this play you're doing?

Couldn't you consider me for the lead? I
know I could do it.

Oh, now, Liz, every pretty little girl
wants to be a lead in a play.

And you know you're very inexperienced.

Just give me a chance.

Work with me. I know I can bring it off.

Well, that would take a lot of time and
work, wouldn't it?

And what would I get out of it?

Isn't it an ancient and honorable
tradition in the theater that the

leading lady gets to sleep with her
director?

Well, my dear, for a...

Such a small-town girl, you certainly do
know how to live life well, don't you?

Doug, I haven't any illusions.

I didn't come up here just for a drink.

You're a very attractive guy.

Let's face it, a girl feels the same way
about love as a man does.

Most girls won't admit it, but believe
me, it's true.

It seemed like such a simple way for a
girl to climb the stairs to stardom.

Now, gentlemen, this is an awfully
ruthless girl.

I don't know. We need this for conflict.
She's written that way, Joe. I think

it's good. Yes, let's just go on.

Leslie Carter, man of big deals and big
money.

As the writer Ed saw Leslie, he was a
man who had started with little and

worked his way up.

The producer let Ed develop this
character by himself.

Ed, one of the most promising writers of
the decade, had a way with characters

like Leslie.

First, his mistress.

A man like Leslie would have indulged
himself in someone like a Mimi.

Born to poverty, Leslie, who was born
Luigi Cariaccio, long dreamed of the day

when he might be rich.

Starting out as a simple kneader of
dough in an Italian restaurant, Leslie

soon bulldozed his way into becoming a
waiter.

One day, he decided that he wanted the
head waiter's job.

The man made more than double what
Leslie made.

He arranged to have the head waiter
depart the premises in a simple fashion.

He threatened them.

Being a coward, the man took off for
destinations unknown.

Leslie became the new head waiter.

One or two of the older waiters were
indignant about such a young man taking

the coveted position.

One night in back of the restaurant,
Leslie persuaded them that they were

wrong about his new job.

After the doctors laid in the stitches,
there was no more discussion about who

should be the head waiter.

From head waiter, Leslie moved on to
bigger things.

First, he thought of opening his own
restaurant. Then, looking into things,

he decided that it would be better to
sell the food to restaurants.

The owner of the place Leslie worked in
was easily convinced that he should give

Leslie a contract to supply him with
spaghetti and linens and sauces and all

the things which comprise a fine
restaurant.

What Leslie lacked in intellect, he made
up in muscle and bony fists.

Soon after, he began to earn big money.

Ambition hit Leslie, and he began to
read stories about the really great men

of finance in America.

Rockefeller, Ford, Giannini, Capone.

These men became his idols.

Suddenly, Leslie discovered that he was
not the strong-arm boy he'd always

thought of himself as.

He began to be aware that he had a
brain. He developed it.

Soon, the two-fisted lout became a man
of education and sophistication.

At this point in his career, he changed
his name to Leslie Carter.

Turning from putting the strong arm on
old Italian restaurant owners, Leslie

began to broaden his horizons.

He put the strong arm on a stocks and
bonds firm in Wall Street.

Approaching the president of the
company, five minutes behind closed

doors saw him become a full partner.

He made his first inroad into the world
of high finance.

After his new partner had taken a much
needed rest, Leslie had him show him the

ropes in Wall Street.

Soon he learned with the best of the
blue blood crowd how to spread rumors,

lie about company earnings, and lie in
wait for big killings in the market.

It was not long before Leslie and his
partner had earned a million dollars in

the market.

He also ascended to the rights of rich
men, fine cars and fast women.

Now he's begun to tire of his present
mistress.

Mimi Schlang, once a simple counter girl
in a five and dime store, has moved up

in the world.

She's the mistress of this famous
millionaire.

The trouble is, she's begun to love the
good things in life just a bit too much.

Somehow, when a girl like Mimi begins to
fall apart, the disintegration comes

with terrifying swiftness.

The first lines appear where they should
after another ten years.

In her haste to remain young-looking,
the girl tries to act gayer than ever.

She covers her face with creams and
lotions and begins to seek that extra

help in seeming to be a fun companion.

She starts loosening up with a round or
two of alcohol.

This is what has happened to Mimi.

Leslie, fed up with Mimi anyway, finds
his interest aroused when Doug calls up

about his new find.

Doug tells Leslie that he's discovered a
girl with great beauty and considerable

talent.

He raves about the girl to such a degree
that Leslie gets really curious.

He's just about decided to unload Mimi
and wonders if this new girl might be a

suitable replacement.

If the girl is as attractive as Doug
says she is.

Leaving Mimi to her beloved companion...
Leslie decides to go down and see for

himself what Doug's talking about.

Now that he's tired of Mimi, Leslie,
fishing for new trout, has checked his

bank balance for a piece of new bait.

He hopes that the fish he'll catch will
prove tasty indeed.

When he walks into the theater and sees
the rehearsal, he finds himself

instantly excited.

What a magnificent female animal this
girl is.

He knows immediately that she has
something.

He also just as swiftly knows he wants
it.

From the first moment he takes to her,
he's enchanted.

As for Liz, her sixth sense tells her
that this is the man who plays the

fiddle which makes even Doug dance.

She has no regrets for what she and Doug
have done.

She at least got the opportunity to meet
Leslie Carter.

Now she's moving into the big time.

Harry, the director, thought it might be
time to see what Barry, the

photographer, was up to.

Ed, the writer, who felt the film should
be done in color, pointed out how it

would enhance scenes like the one to
follow.

Ed the writer was still adamant about
using color in the film.

It seemed that if the entire film were
in color, it'd be much more enjoyable.

Joe, as usual, the money-minded
producer, kept putting his foot down.

Although they had enough money to do the
picture, the budget was still not large

enough to turn out anything but a
black-and-white movie.

Harry, always the arch-politician in
these discussions, usually sided with

the producer.

In New York, there's an institution
known as the Cocktail Party.

No matter who you are, you're nothing
until you've either given or been to a

cocktail party.

Usually, they start toward the end of a
working day, about five in the

afternoon.

But Leslie's too busy for weekday
parties.

So this bright Sunday, Leslie's taken
time off from his labor of love, making

money, and is having a coming-out party
for Liz.

He's gotten rid of his former mistress,
or at least he thinks he has.

Leslie's penthouse apartment overlooks
the most fashionable part of New York.

The towering park hotels, the green
panorama of Central Park, the RCA

building, all these monuments to New
York are seen from his terrace.

This man knows how to live well.

Since the Internal Revenue Department
has declared itself into his will as a

beneficiary against his wishes, Leslie
is determined to live it up during his

remaining years.

The party's a success.

Almost any New York cocktail party is.

The secret is to drink three fast
martinis or scotches and then laugh

constantly, all the time agreeing with
what the other person is saying.

Anyone who's serious for more than 30
seconds is sliced off the guest list for

the next round of frivolity.

Connie has been invited to the party
because Liz feels a little sorry for

her. Not too sorry. A girl like Liz
can't understand carrying the torch for

a guy.

who thinks it's cute to have what she

calls a little drinking.

Now, drunk again, she decides she wants
to talk to Leslie.

She begins to think about all the nice
things her keeper will get for her.

With each sip of her drink, she sees an
ever-mounting pile of furs, clothes,

jewelry, and all the other things she
thinks life owes her.

If she only knew what was going on out
on the terrace.

Girls like Mimi are always the last to
realize when the party's over for them.

Right now, Leslie doesn't even give her
a single thought.

With men like Leslie, women are
playthings. They're expensive, but that

doesn't bother these fellows.

With bought women, they can feel free to
treat them like dirt if they feel like

it. They couldn't get away with that
with a wife.

Leslie's annoyed at being called away
from his new girl.

When he finds out that it's Mimi, he
tries to control his temper.

Sure, he can yell and scream as well as
the next guy, but he realizes that with

a drunk stiff like Mimi, you have to
have more pity than anger.

She's just a mistress reaching the end
of the line with her benefactor.

Leslie thinks about Liz out on the
terrace.

He makes a comparison.

Talking with Mimi, once a time of
amusement and delight, now seems

excruciatingly boring.

He wonders what he ever saw in this
ridiculous person in the first place.

Just talking to Mimi makes Liz seem ten
times as desirable.

He contrasts Liz's youthful suppleness
with Mimi's growing set of wrinkles.

Each drink seems to etch another line of
the face.

The mouth, as he sees it over the phone,
is slack with drunken stupidity.

The bright girl of three years ago has
become an intense irritation to Leslie.

On the terrace, the guests are having a
fine time.

Account executives from advertising
agencies are piling point upon point

with prospective employers and clients.

And a few men here and there are laying
the groundwork for an affair in the

future.

Will this stupid woman ever get off this
phone?

Leslie wishes he were more of a tough
guy. Then he'd just tell her to jump

four times into a lake and come up three
times. But not Leslie.

Mimi, clutching her main interest in
life, is fighting for her future.

She reminds Leslie of the many good
times they had together.

But it's different now.

To even touch this creature is
disgusting to Leslie.

Leslie promises to see Mimi in a week.
He tells her he has some important

business to take care of.

He wonders just how much he should give
her to pay her off. No hard feelings,

just hard cash.

Well, enough of the lush. He wants to
get back to Liz.

Meanwhile, back at the bottle, a stoned
Mimi is planning all sorts of sexy

things to wear for Leslie's visit. She's
confident that she'll be able to cement

him back to her with a display of
affection and tender caresses.

What she doesn't know is that her once
tender touch is now like the grating of

sandpaper across his cheek.

Connie is feeling just plain lousy. Two
times by her boyfriend, Mr. Hendricks at

the showroom beginning to bother her for
a date.

Life is becoming something of a drag for
the girl.

At this point, the producer, director,
and writer realize that they had to have

Connie react to the circumstances which
have made her miserable.

Harry suggests that she should throw
herself right into the thick of the

sophisticated crowd and be on the make
for every man in sight.

Harry's reasoning is that the events
will be too much for this sweet child.

Betrayed by her first lover, overworked
at the showroom.

Now she's at this party for Liz, and she
sees that Virtue's reward is a flannel

nightgown and a cup of warm milk before
going to bed.

Liz is beginning to come home with fur
pieces, gold cigarette lighters, and

spending money which her folks never
sent from home.

Harry says, let her have a good time.
Let her show these New Yorkers. The girl

from Troy, New York, knows how to tinkle
the ice cubes and really cut loose.

Joe, the producer, put his foot down.

Sure, she might be bowled over by things
piling up, but she's a decent girl.

She's not about to turn slut after a
couple of drinks.

In the meantime, Liz is a smashing
success.

To celebrate her successful debut,
Leslie's made a little trip to

Tiffany's, a little store which sells
the kind of ice which doesn't melt.

At this rate, the Internal Revenue
Department won't have anything to swell

their pockets when Leslie's hijinks take
their toll on his system.

He's getting a bit old to handle a girl
like Liz, but he likes to have her

around.

The men develop their plot further.

Leslie had a fine house on Fire Island,
and they'd make use of it in the story.

Summer, and just the perfect time for
relaxation on a weekend.

Leslie, being a rich man, has bought
himself a house on Fire Island.

The island is the playground of the
well-heeled crowd from New York.

This weekend, Leslie is acting the
munificent host, and has asked Liz if

she'd like to bring along a couple of
her girlfriends.

Sure, says Liz, the kids would love to
spend a whole weekend at the beach.

Well, who should she bring, she
wondered.

Well, first, Connie.

Have to do that.

The poor kid's still in the dumps thanks
to her philandering boyfriend.

Helga, a lovely blonde German girl.

And finally, Tracy, Liz's cousin.

They look enough alike to be sisters.

But Tracy's a little different. She's
not man-crazy or so hell-bent on making

the big time.

Not like Liz, who's looking for some
caviar, a jug of scotch, and a vigorous

man to curl up with.

Leslie's looking forward to this
weekend.

It's been fun showing Liz the town and
letting her get a real taste of what

money can do.

For the first time in her life, Liz
knows what it is to point at something

and say, Gimme.

Presto, no sugar plum fairy comes forth.

Rather, her sugar datums.

She can snap her fingers, and magically,
Leslie is there, open checkbook

extended. Is there any fool like an old
one?

But as far as Leslie's concerned, he's
getting his money's worth.

He's no dope either.

He knows that without the long green
stuff, he'd just be one of the guys

standing on the corner watching all the
Liz's of the world twitch past him.

But at this stage in his life, Leslie
couldn't care less that he's being taken

for a little ride by Liz.

When all the shooting's over, it'll
still be Leslie who's holding the cash

box. And if Liz decides to take off,
why, that's tough tiddlywinks. For her,

not him.

Leslie's had his little flings before.

As for marriage, Leslie's too smart for
that.

He's seen too many of his other rich
friends marry some little cream puff,

and a year later, the girl yells mental
cruelty, and his friend is standing

around like a dope while a judge is
emptying his pockets and shoveling it

all into the girl's mink-lined piggy
bank.

Not for Leslie, such a deal.

Nope, he'll take his girls as they come.

He's a strong believer in the
installment plan.

Helga, the blonde German girl, is new to
Leslie.

She's a secretary in a suntan lotion
factory, and she's brought along a

supply for the weekend.

They're all needed. The girl's a nudist.

When Liz first heard about this, she was
shocked.

Then Helga explained a few things.

Liz was surprised to learn that
everything was proper and on the up and

up at a nudist camp.

Anyway, there's nothing wrong with
nudism. It's one of the most popular

family pastimes in the world.

In the United States alone, There are
hundreds of nudist camps spread around

the whole country.

And who goes to these camps?

Mostly entire families of excellent
reputation.

They support this modern form of
health-seeking.

They pile into their cars, just like
Leslie and the girls, and off they go to

their favorite camp.

Sometimes it's in the woods, in the
midst of soaring trees and imposing

mountains.

Nature is impressed upon their minds at
every glance.

The long miles were soon behind Leslie
and his cubby of peacocks.

The two hours on the road had seemed to
pass like the shadow of a thin man.

Ahead, Bayshore, Long Island.

And now, a pleasant half hour on a
ferry.

And then, Fire Island itself.

For Connie, this little holiday is not
as much fun as it might be.

She's wondering if Barry has ever gotten
around to leaving that studio of his.

If it were really a den of iniquity, a
30 by 40 bedroom.

Bayshore, Long Island.

and the beginning of the delightful trip
across the bay.

The car well cared for for the weekend,
Leslie and the girls are looking forward

to a relaxing ride which almost can seem
like a sea voyage.

On the walk, dozens of other people who
share the same expectations of a couple

of days in the Fire Island sun and surf.

The ride itself will take about half an
hour.

Plenty of time to forget the long ride
out from New York City.

What a great feeling for the girls to be
able to wear the kind of resort clothes

which really take away the cares of city
living with all its soot and grime.

Up on the boat, a solidly designed
affair which can accommodate a hundred

passengers.

Naturally, on such a day, they take the
upper deck where they can see the whole

bay with its lusciously blue waters and
waves of sparkling white caps.

It's a paradise for girls marooned all
week in the granite canyons of the city.

As luck falls for them, they've got
seats at the side of the ferry.

The rest of the passengers are just as
eager to get going as they are.

Leslie must love being surrounded by
such girls.

With a bong and a cheer, the crowd is
off for the magical island.

And the boat is off on its too short
journey across this lovely bay, one of

the few of its kind in the world.

It must be wonderful to be as rich as
Leslie and be able to spend a weekend

with such a covey of beauties.

Even the water seems to be playful this
day as the boat heads off.

Waves gaily splash against the side of
the ferry, and the bay itself is

peaceful and offers a kind invitation
for all lovers of water sports.

Across the waters, the friendly Fire
Island.

Playground of the rich and not so rich.

Not the poor, however.

The economics rule them out.

It almost seems that beauty is a must in
this scene, although Leslie is a little

out of place with these girls.

Lucky for him, he's got wealth.

What riches will eventually be showered
on this foursome of lovelies?

Around them, boats cavort and trace soft
patterns in the afternoon sun.

And the carefree feeling of boats seems
to enter the very mind of those watching

the peaceful scene.

Boats of all kinds set up a friendly
turbulence, and waves come up to the big

ferry and crash against the side in a
sort of aquatic welcome.

Fire Island on the horizon.

The playground of writers and actors and
actresses. By now, the girls wonder what

it's really like.

It started as a simple retreat for the
summer of fairly well-off people. Soon

as the years passed, it was discovered
by tired people in the arts who were

looking for a place to relax and find
calm during the heat of the summer.

They found it on this handsome long spit
of sand a hundred miles long.

Inside of a relatively few years, the
island was overrun with people.

And today, countless houses range up and
down the beach and offer a haven away

from the fierce summer heat of the
cities.

In the many scattered communities on the
island, they found their hideaways.

And now, the four girls are going to get
a chance to see what it is about this

island that endears it to the hearts of
so many people who have the money to buy

whatever happens to please them at the
moment.

The ferry is made fast to the dock, and
the weekend revelers get off and hurry

to their rooms and houses.

for a couple of days of carousing,
loving, and drinking, but mostly just

lazing in the sun.

It's a short walk to Leslie's house, and
the girls can't wait until they have a

chance to get into that superb surf with
the hot white sand of this beach, often

called the world's finest.

In their gay holiday clothing, the four
girls cut a handsome picture.

Surely they must be the most beautiful
girls on this entire island.

And now, the first sight of the
welcoming sea.

Leslie's house is well suited to his
bank account.

It's worth at least $40,000 and stands
on stilts to keep the rising tides from

sweeping it away.

Leslie would like the place to stay out
here and not float back on a tidal wave

to New York.

It's a happy fivesome this Saturday
morning.

Nice drive out, fun ferry ride, and now
something which is amusingly called a

cottage in the circles in which Leslie
travels these days.

Going up the stairs...

It almost seems like they're mounting a
12-room throne.

The first actual feel of the sun deck
under their feet seems to make the girls

burst into a girlish kind of joy.

The girls can hardly wait to shed their
exterior clothing and get into their new

bathing suits, which will be christened
this Saturday.

Helga, the only nudist in the group,
can't wait until she finds the proper

spot where she can indulge in her own
personal belief of healthful sun

worship.

The other girls are also each secretly
wondering what it would be like to

follow the example of this sweet girl
who could only be telling them about

nudism for their own good.

Inside, the house is furnished
magnificently.

The taste of five major decorators has
gone into it.

As for the girls, it's off with their
clothes and into bikinis. Bring on that

surf.

Leslie, however, is still the
businessman, even during a weekend of

supposed relaxation.

There's no union to limit the hours for
millionaires.

The girls can't wait to get to the
beach.

Our little pussycats will be the toast
of the beach.

Leaving Leslie behind to worry about his
bank balance, the four girls go off to

enjoy what has been called the finest
beach in the world.

The beach looks most inviting to these
four lovers of nature.

First, the time-honored ritual of laying
out the blankets.

Normally, the girls would have some
fellows fix up the blankets, but no such

luck this time.

Fighting the wind, the girls present an
appealing picture to the rest of the

people on Ocean Beach.

This weekend, as always, some of the
most interesting people from New York

are spending a couple of days away from
future wear and tear on their systems.

Enough with blankets for these girls.
Now it's bathing time.

Sure, they can swim, but it wouldn't
look maidenly to suddenly display the

skill of a porpoise.

Helga is one of the first in.

Tracy's a bit chicken. A little touch of
some cool water and she turns tail.

The girls present a fetching picture.

Their bikinis are just tiny enough to
make an old man wish for the summers of

his youth, and just large enough to keep
the women from running these competitors

off the beach.

These bikinis are made of some magical
man-made fibers.

They're okay for the daytime, but
naturally the girls have flannel bikinis

for the cool nights on the beach.

An inspiring group of girls.

As they cavort around the beach, one
wonders about the odd viewpoint of a

segment of society which seems to insist
that the human body must be kept hidden

from view.

Formed by the forces of nature, these
four girls represent all that is divine

in human life.

Too soon, the end of a lovely day.

Saturday, which comes all too far in the
future of the week, ends all too soon.

But for the girls, it's not that the
weekend is half over, but that there's

still half the weekend to enjoy.

For Liz, there's always Leslie to while
away the evening hours with.

For the other girls, although there are
no boyfriends to pass the time without

here, there's at least the thought that
this evening they'll rest in downy deep

beds, bearing the crest of a
millionaire.

For the girls, this has been a wonderful
Saturday.

The everyday cares of the city are
behind them, and there's still Sunday to

look forward to.

Connie, of course, was still wondering
what was going on back in New York.

Was Barry upset about the fact that
Connie had walked out on him?

Or was he just making the best of the
situation?

Liz was hoping that Leslie had enjoyed
the day, even though he chose to remain

in the house, thinking up new ideas
about making more money.

Helga and Tracy...

were just luxuriating in being in this
playground of the rich.

The soft evening breeze caressed the
surf as it rolled in with a gentle purr.

A peaceful scene, this.

Joe thought that it might be time to let
the audience be free from the

distractions of always having men around
with the four girls.

As he saw the plot, Leslie had a fine
little power cruiser.

Tracy knows how to pilot the boat, and
the girls just feel like going off and

gossiping amongst themselves.

Leslie forgoes the pleasure of boating
and stays at the house to discuss

business with an acquaintance who's also
on the island.

Ed, the writer, still thinks the film
should be in color and points out how

photogenic the next sequence would be if
shot that way.

Frantic. All weekend he's been trying to
get Connie.

It's Monday night and he tries again.

When the phone rings, she's half hoping
it'll be Barry.

He starts to whisper sweet things.

But she's playing the part of a wronged
woman.

By now the conference at the office was
beginning to get wearying.

Each had a different idea of how to
handle the remainder of the film.

They raised their voices and shouted a
bit.

and sometimes acted like grade school
children.

But finally, they began to come to some
common agreement.

Friends again, they continued to develop
their story.

During the weekend, Connie had really
wished that she could be back in Barry's

arms. But now, having heard from him,
she found it easy to make him beg to

bring him to heel.

Maybe, incidentally, to get him to give
up his shenanigans so she can make an

honest man out of him.

As for Barry...

Now that his girl seems out of his
reach, he suddenly starts thinking of

all the reasons he loved her so much.

As for Connie, she's smart enough to
know that she can play this game just so

far. She doesn't want to lose Barry
completely.

Minute by minute, Connie mounts even
higher on this pedestal that Barry's

built in his mind.

She's an angel, a gift from the very
heavens themselves.

When she walks, it's the undulations of
an Aphrodite.

When she talks, even Plato stops to
listen.

Her hair rivals the setting sun, and her
skin is like apricot yogurt.

The ache in his heart grows as each
minute passes.

Connie's trying to figure out just when
to let him come panting back to her.

How lucky Barry was to have found the
only girl in the world.

He wants to win back this paragon of all
things.

The boys were pleased.

They'd added that extra touch of
mischief in their screenplay.

which would allow them to have fun with
their characters.

Things were proceeding well, but they
decided that they must begin to tie up

all the loose ends and get their people
to resolve their problems one way or

another. They again come to an agreement
and sail on with the story.

Friday night that same week, one of
Liz's friends has invited her to a party

at a studio in the village.

Supposedly just a nice group of people
and maybe a few laughs along with a many

drinks. Plenty of extra guys.

So Liz has asked Connie to come along
and have some fun.

Leslie also has been invited.

It's not often that a millionaire gets
around to attending one of these

soirees. He's a coup for the hosters.

But like all millionaires, last things
come up to delay his having fun.

Leslie's off to pay off his Mimi, his
former mistress.

He'll be back later on in the evening.

Half filled up with drinks already and
the party's in high gear, the guests

greet the girls with enthusiasm.

At least they bathe frequently, which is
more than can be said for too many of

the village girls.

If the guys here can't make time with
them, they'll at least enjoy sniffing

their perfumed earlobes.

For Connie, this is her first village
party.

It seems much less wicked than she'd
heard.

The fellows and girls all seemed pretty
normal.

This might be fun.

In the meantime, Mimi is again consoling
herself with a bottle.

She's on her way to her record.

With this kind of training, she'll be
able to enter the Olympics and sweep all

competition in her field of
specialization.

Leslie, annoyed as having to make this
trip, is nonetheless relieved and just a

little happy.

Getting rid of this booze hound is a
weight off his shoulders.

Sure, she once gave him lots of thrills
and laughs, but now she's on the way

down. It won't be long before she's
patrolling the joints and bars, looking

for beers or wine from anybody old
standards were around.

Liz took a fast glance around and came
to a fast conclusion.

There were swingers here, sure as she
could see.

Turn off the music, please.

As for

Connie,

she began to get just a bit nervous.

First, the boy was getting very fancy
with his talk.

Names like Reich, Freud, de Sade.

She knew they were writers of some kind
and tried to remember where she'd heard

their names.

Connie tried to tell the nibbler to cut
it out, you'll lick off my expensive

perfume.

Mmm, that ear was delicious.

May I avail myself of a second helping?

Now wait a minute, fella. My ear, my
shoulder, where will this end?

I've had enough, she yelled.

Liz, in the meantime, was in her
element.

When it comes to men, girls like Liz
have second sight.

Connie, on the other hand, really means
it when she gets angry at a guy for

getting out of line.

She didn't even wait to fix her dress.

She just wants to get away from the
scene.

The guy just shrugs this kid off.

What a bird, he thinks.

Actually, he couldn't care less.

Not with all the other with it girls at
this party.

Meanwhile,

back at the stoop, there's Barry, dug in
for the duration.

He's composed a dozen poems of apology
in his mind.

She'll listen to them if he has to tie a
cement block on her feet.

Oh, dearest, he thinks, will you forgive
this unworthy one?

Connie's heart leaps into her throat as
she sees Barry.

All the nasty things she's thought of to
belt him with her right out the window.

What a joyful homecoming from so sordid
an evening.

After those characters at the party,
Barry looks like Prince Valiant.

There's no need for either of them to
say anything.

Their minds speak the common thoughts
and all's well with their private little

world.

Now the participants in this Friday
night escapade have settled down to a

good old-fashioned block.

It's La Dolce Vita, village style.

Whiskey flows, girls undulate.

The music raises their blood to a
feverish roar, and civilization's

trappings begin to melt away.

Just a nice group of boys and girls
letting their hair down.

It now has become apparent that the
guest list at this gathering has been

carefully selected.

One of the few misfits, according to
their way of life, had been Connie.

Liz loves this kind of party.

She's found herself a few guys and
flitted from one to the other.

As for the other girls, they don't have
to give any points away to Liz in the

fun fruit sticks.

One of the girls, a Coney Island exotic
dancer, decides to show these people

what a real artiste is like.

She begins a seductive hip movement,
which mesmerizes her audience.

It's like a Swiss movement on a clock,
as her mechanism begins to tick, tock,

tick, tock.

She's heard that a watch company was
going to have a sales convention, and

she thought she'd practice for her
audition.

Liz has found herself a few guys, and
her pulsating body has gotten them into

the rhythms of ancient rites.

A few years from now, this girl, who was
once as innocent a child as any, will be

reduced to being the commonest tramp.

As Leslie writes his most touching
farewell letter, Mimi is already

thinking of a liquor store she can buy
with the generous amount of buy-buy

money Leslie's handing out.

Just think, all that booze at wholesale
prices.

When Leslie leaves, Mimi is only
momentarily depressed.

Then she brightens.

Leslie's getting old.

With this much money, Mimi knows of a
certain young and handsome lingerie

salesman who likes to have a drink or
two.

Life may still be beautiful.

And now, with a great sense of
anticipation of the fun he'll have at

the party, Leslie drives up.

Ed, the writer, was still sticking to
his guns about this being a color film.

It was his turn to write the remainder
of the big party scene.

And in his mind, it still had the magic
of color.
