We see Demich start to
talk about how he felt

rejected by Cynthia Cole.

He talks about how he was
attracted to her

and he had feelings,
but then she shut him down.

So inherently, Demich took that
rejection as this is not

a good thing.

His ego is hurt, but by sharing
that he's a sex offender early,

may seem like he's coming off
as helpful and he's acting like

he's her friend,
But In reality, he's just

constructing this narrative
and this image that he wants

police to see him as.

It's very possible that
he was just trying to hide

who he really is,
and that would make him

sort of like, a suspect,

because he had prior offenses
that were sexual

and violent in nature.

So, it would be only natural
for police to start

paying attention to Demich
at this point.

I think Demich is trying to
play this game by ear.

I think he's still trying to
send up test balloons to

figure out
what do the detectives know,

how quickly can
they tell it to me,

and how fast can I make up
a story that best fits

the narrative that
they're already trying to spin.

So he seems like,
when we take a look at him,

he doesn't seem
all that distressed, right?

He's -- arms on the table
and he's, you know,

looking forward,
but I think his mind is like,

you know,
the duck flapping in the lake

where it's super calm
up on of the lake,

but he's spinning his flippers

trying to figure out,

what's the next thing
that I need to say

in order to make it seem
like I'm not the bad guy.

[Dr. Saraiya]
I think he had a general idea

that he would try to give 'em
a certain timeline,

but he's not that good at
anticipating having to

hide his tracks.

I think that speaks to
the grandiosity that he has.

So, he does not have
a sense

that his story isn't so good
and has holes in it.

He's convinced himself,
just because of this narcissism

and grandiosity, that he can
get away with things.

[Dr. De La Torre]
His psychopathy is about
manipulating people,

but it is more about getting
back into the shadows.

He doesn't like being out
in the spotlight.

Notice his overall appearance.

He's not really someone that
cares about having

a bright light put on him.
He prefers the darkness.

He prefers to be
out of sight.

So he doesn't like
all of this attention

that is being brought to him.

His psychopathy is
not pronounced.

He's not trying to mitigate.
He's not trying to obfuscate.

He's not trying to even get
a lesser sentence or even

draw detectives in.

He's just trying and hoping
that they will let him go

so he can go back to the shadows
where he prefers to be.

What he's trying to do
is just deny

and hopefully I can
get released.

[Dr. Saraiya] His interest in
trying to control

the narrative, and his
belief that he's gonna be

able to convince
the police of something

fits with the pattern
that we see with psychopaths.

They tend to think that they're
smarter than everybody,

and they do have a history
of being able to

manipulate other people.

So they're going into these
interactions thinking that

they're gonna be able to
manipulate the detectives

the same way that
they get through life,

manipulating people and telling
their own story.

But we can see that he's
completely lost control of

the story, but he's in it,
you know, trying his best to

maintain the control.
But it's falling apart fast.

Now to a disturbing story out
of Martin County,

where the sheriff's office
there says they have found

a woman's body in Jensen Beach.

Cynthia Cole was last seen on
February 24th after a night out

with her friends.

The 57-year-old's body was
found in the septic tank of

her home during
an overnight search.

[suspenseful music playing]

Most sexual psychopaths
we know from research tend to

engage in a lot of fantasy
because that really helps

their arousal system that
generally does not work in

a typical fashion.

And so fantasies are usually
rigid, they're persistent,

and they have to escalate
over time.

So the next plausible step
after grabbing her underwear

and going into the shower
and waiting for her is probably

to act out on those fantasies.

They can only really suffice
for the psychopath for so long

until they just
become saturated.

And then novelty is needed to

get that arousal system
back up again.

[Dr. De La Torre]
I don't know that he was fully
prepared to engage in

everything that he had been
fantasizing about.

You still have to cross
that barrier.

Now, yes, he has been convicted
as a sex offender, sure,

but his behaviors since then
have not really demonstrated

an ability to break
that boundary

and physically violate someone
with touch.

So I think he's probably
fantasizing about how

everything is gonna go down.

And when it doesn't go down
and she screeches

and she runs away, things have
to escalate very quickly.

And since he's already
upset with her,

since he's already angry
and wants to violate her,

because she is running away,

that is more evidence
that he needs to what he wants

from her because she's
not gonna give it freely.

[Dr. Vienna] It really shows
his lack of attachment to

anybody, a person,
but particularly here,

Cynthia Cole,
because he has no distress

over what just happened,

he's back engaging in
his normal everyday activities.

So it's really a lack of
emotional connection,

a lack of empathy,
a lack of remorse,

and really highlights his level
of callousness.

Cynthia stopped being
a person to him.

Cynthia Cole became an object
to Demich to serve his,

you know, sexual needs,
but again, more so to fulfill

that psychological aspect of
having power and control,

and really that's feeding
his ego, which is what he wants

more than just
a sexual connection.

This is absolutely an element

of the rejected
sexual psychopath.

There's no way that he's just
gonna take no for an answer.

Remember, he's already admitted
that there's another way in

which I can enter back
into her life.

There's another way in which
I can try to convince her to go

on a date with me.

I can find another way to do
all of these things.

But she keeps saying no.
That's what he's tired of.

He's tired of being told no.

He's heard no enough times from
her that he's willing to

now cross the boundary.

I think for Demich,
he feels that this relationship

had to end with
him killing Cynthia Cole

because she rejected him
and she didn't take him.

I don't think that
he wanted another way out.

I think he planned this.
He wanted this to happen.

It was very
goal-directed behavior.

It fulfilled all of
his psychological needs.

He wasn't really connected with
her in any other way than

seeing her as an object
and a means to an end.

[Dr. Saraiya]
Mr. Demich is a psychopath.

You know, it's anything that
happens, even though

it's driven by their own needs,

people get what they deserve.

You know, she didn't go along
with what he wanted,

so therefore she got
what she deserved.

I mean, it's a simple calculus.
It's cold.

It's unfeeling.

It has no recognition for
her as a person,

for their relationship.

But again, those things don't
exist in the mind

of a psychopath.
In the end, he's being honest.

I had no feelings.

I simply took what I wanted,
and the flip side of that

is she deserved it.
