The nation's anger and despair worsened
during the spring of 1932 as the Great

Depression continued.

Surplus food was burned to support farm
prices while people went hungry.

And those people who had jobs fought to
create unions to defend their standard

of living.

Presidential leadership was seen as a
possible solution, and the power of the

presidency was likely to go to a
Democrat in the upcoming national

election.

Lucky Luciano, Michael Lasker, and Ben
Siegel did not want that power to be

used against them.
