It is one
of the coldest days so far.

River is starting to freeze.

It's finally cold enough

that I think my worries
about food spoiling are over.

It's actually almost
completely frozen already.

Preserving meat was
the main focus all the time,

but now, my shelter is
still far from finished.

Yeah, here's clay,

but under water,
which is not good.

I have to, most importantly,

build a chimney in my shelter,

because at the moment,
I don't have any fireplace.

But I'm a bit late.

♪

Snow has covered the land,

and river is freezing now,

and it's actually really
difficult to find good clay.

♪

Slightly sandy,
but good enough.

♪

I'm using clay.

It's a bit more sandy,
which, in my opinion,

is not the best
for construction.

[sighs]

I will add grass.

Make it really thick.

♪

And if I get right consistency,
it's gonna be nice and easy.

I've been working
with clay quite a lot,

but mostly for pottery.

I've never done
something like this.

[dramatic music]

I decide to put
a huge tree trunk

and put clay over it

so the fireplace has
some kind of shape.

I'm going to burn
this piece of wood

so it's gonna become hollow.

♪

Let it slowly dry.

♪

I will build from this base

a very tall chimney.

So hopefully not have
any smoke in my shelter.

Chimney, chimney, chimney.

I hope this system works.

I made this frame for a chimney

using willow.

♪

We have the right size.

OK.

♪

With temperatures below zero,

first phase of survival
is finished.

Now I'm entering
the second phase,

which is more calmed down.

There is not such time
pressure to finish stuff now.

I think this chimney
is starting to work.

I have to start preserving
a bit more of my energy

and focus a bit more
on fishing and snaring

and other projects.

It's--now it's different
type of survival.

You know, it will work
like this already.

not to dry it too fast

and get cracks.

Finally, a proper fireplace.

a beautiful snowy day today.

I just want to give you
a little guided tour

of the shelter.

From this angle,
it's very much a teepee.

But if we come around,

we have this section here,
which is a lean-to.

And this is the panel
that I've made.

It can be kicked out
from the inside quite easily,

so that's my fire escape.

And then we come
around the back.

I've just covered it
with everything.

It's got a tarp on it as well
to try and hold the snow

to create extra insulation.

It seems to be working.

So it's two shelters
joined together to make one,

a teepee-lean-to combination.

Teepee-to.

I think it looks pretty cool.

Let's go have a look
on the inside.

Definitely heading
into proper winter now.

Got the fire going nicely.

This shelter is a harbour
from what's going on outside.

The temperature in here
is way warmer than outside.

[suspenseful music]

I can batten down the hatches.

I can just be dry, warm,
and comfortable.

It'll see me for however long
this takes.

This is the raised bed.

Home from home.

I don't think I could have
done a better job

of creating what
I'd envisaged in my head.

Everyone's gonna want
a teepee-to.

Oh, yeah. [chuckles]

OK. Right, let's do stuff.

Get some more snow in the pot.

Day to day,

just concentrating now
on my routines.

Getting up, melting more snow,

making sure I've always got
water on standby.

Making my spruce needle tea.

Once I've got
all the water sorted,

get some more firewood in.

If you're lucky,
eat something.

Checking snares.

Get into a routine.

You just do the same stuff
every day.

It's freaking boring,
but very essential.

This is actual survival.

It's a very simple
way of life,

in a very complex way.

There's nothing in there.

To repeat Lofty Wiseman's
wise words,

"If you're doing
survival properly,

it should look boring."

I wouldn't argue with Lofty.

Wrote the "SAS
Survival Handbook."

Not a guy to mess with.

And he's a good mate.

If I can just keep
doing what I'm doing,

hopefully get food,

that's that missing link
from the whole thing.

I can do everything else.

It's that food security.

All I can do is just keep
trying to provide food.

I want to explore
the piece of land.

It's in the southerly
direction.

Bit of a mission to get there.

And hopefully, it will be
a better place for big game.

alongside the river,

so I know where I am.

I just kept going round
in circles.

And I've lost my bear spray.

I mean, I've been lost

I've never gone round and round
in circles in a small area.

You could easily get lost

and no one would ever
see you again.

I should start heading back.

I hope I don't see a bear.

How I did that, I don't know.

It's just--
the brush is so dense.

There's no sun.

There's really nothing
to gauge your bearings from.

Just following the same loop.

Made no sense at all.

It's getting tougher.

The weather's getting tougher.

It's a massive,
massive challenge

to keep myself mentally
and physically healthy.

What keeps me focused now

is that financial reward.

That's what it's become,
I'm being honest.

I've got such big plans.

I've been working
in the field of mental health

and ecotherapy probably
12 years at least now,

using bushcraft,
using survival skills

as a tool to wellbeing.

Things like depression and
anxiety are markedly improved

by spending time outside.

If I win, I have the money
to do all of the things

that I keep wanting to do.

I'm gonna create this
outdoor bushcraft studio

where we can run
livestreamed workshops

for mental health
and wellbeing.

I just want to
be able to grow it

and just give other people
the opportunity

to gain the benefits of nature
that I've had in my life.

In reality, making it work

without the funding
is really difficult.

I haven't got the option
of just tapping out

if things are getting
a bit uncomfortable.

I've got to stick with this.

The fish swim towards me.

So I have this really weird
terrain feature

that's on my parcel.

some sort of draw, really.

Where water was coming
through here at some point.

I'm covering the top of it.

Almost turning this into
a rock house kitchen.

Anyway, it's actually
gonna turn into

a little oven-slash-smoker,

so I'm just covering
the top now.

And then eventually,
I'll make a little door.

I actually haven't had
to cache my food yet.

I've just been eating it.

However, we are starting

to have to think about
preserving our food,

rationing our food
compared to just eating it.

I've been blessed
with quite a few hare

and a fish in the past week.

So I want to build a smoker.

The game out here,
it's just getting started.

There is ice starting to form
on the top of the river,

which is
a pretty serious reminder

that winter is coming
really fast.

This is
the World Championship.

The participants are some
of the best of the best,

so I have to be ready
for the long haul.

This is pretty much what our
outdoor kitchen looks like.

So it's built into
the ground, all right?

OK, so you build a fire
at the bottom, all right?

And through this draw
in the ground, right,

the smoke will rise.

I'm actually quite proud of it.

I think it's pretty darn cool.

So we're just gonna kind of
cover it up with some logs

and, you know,

wait for a nice day
of abundance to--

to use it.

So I'm gonna go check
the gillnet

and the trap line real fast.

I got another fish.

I think it's a burbot.

that I associate with my mom.

My mom was born on January 8th

and passed away
on September 8th.

My mom was my best friend,
and I know that I was hers.

She always picked up
the phone.

She was always there.

My mother passed away
from kidney disease in 2020.

Dear God, that's a lot of meat.

I know that my mom is with me.

And I know that she's cheering
for me, wherever she is.

our kitchen,

our food cache today too.

And, uh, the full-on
winter parka is now...

a lot more of me in red.

And I think red against snow
looks pretty good.

Anyway, I've melted snow.

I've got a full
2-quart pot of water.

Progress is being made.
Things are happening.

Next job, I want to go
and check the snares,

see if there's anything
in those.

I really do not want
to go to bed hungry.

which is a very sad state
of affairs, in my opinion.

I just built it way too late.

and it's as simple as that.

Survival is 90% a mind game.

Skills give you
an absolute advantage,

but most of survival
comes down to your ability

to keep yourself calm,

focus on what you need to do,
and avoid panic.

The mental challenge out here
is just off the scale.

Need some sort of food today,
anything.

Working in the field
of mental health

and wellbeing through nature,
the number of people

I've seen going
from a very, very low place--

they hadn't left
their houses in years,

and we've managed to get them
out, get them into the woods.

Nothing in that one.

Outside and away
from all the negative things

that affect us
in the modern world.

Getting off our phones
and using our hands,

using our senses
is just so positive.

It's definitely something that
there's a need for in Wales,

and probably in a lot
of other places too.

I get so down when I know

that my food intake
isn't sufficient,

because I just know
that if I can win this,

I can change not just my life
and my family's lives,

but a hell of a lot
of other people's lives.

All of them hinge
on me winning this.

more mentally challenging

I've been eating rabbits.

And I've had berries
in between.

I don't see myself

So this is a design
that I learned from Kie.

She made different ones
on her season.

Lashed, lashed, and lashed,

and I just stretch
this one out.

And I'll have to then lash it.

But afterwards, thinking back
and revising and improving,

she came up with this design.

OK, nice and tight.

All right,
so I'm getting there.

And I do another crosspiece.

Standing on the shoulders
of giants with what I'm doing,

learning from the best, from
those that have come before me

and continue to walk beside me
and lead me and guide me.

[tense music]

Two snowshoe frames.

I will get the boughs for them
and weave them through

and tie them in place.

And then I'll do
the lashings for the foot,

and snowshoes will be done.

[vocalising]

My first exposure
to Lure of the North

was in seeing Kie on "Alone."

I had no idea that
people were out there

doing these amazing
expeditions

through
the Canadian wilderness.

It just seemed like
this awesome opportunity.

Oh.

Some larger fish down there.

Not in the weir,
but in the water itself.

That big whitefish.

Maybe I could spear it,
but I'm not sure.

Wonder if that pushed
any fish into the weir.

Let's have a look.

Like a 30-centimetre
whitefish right there.

That's excellent.

Whoo! That was a great start.

So far, the fish weir
has been so good to me.

Oh, there's a whole bunch
of little fish.

there's a larger whitefish
right there.

Got another meal out
of the weir today.

It just keeps working,
keeps giving me fish,

so I'm very, very grateful.

And, yeah, just glad that
that just keeps working.

Got 12 whitefish.

Including this good-sized one
this morning from the weir.

Continues to provide.

And there's some big,
big whitefish there, like--

yeah, I'm talking 50,
60 centimetres, real thick.

So it kind of makes sense to
put the gillnet in that space.

[dramatic music]

Growing up, I was always
a bit of a loner.

Always just felt like
just the black sheep

and the odd one out.

So let's just see
how it's gonna sit.

And I just couldn't find
my people,

my tribe, my community.

Oh, yeah.

That's more like it.

You know, I tried
through, like, military

and wildlife rescue,
emergency state rescue,

volunteering,
all that sort of stuff.

Just didn't really
connect with people

in a significant way.

Bring that out.

Until I started
to get into the outdoors

and started to connect
with people,

with the wilderness community.

As always,
keep an eye out for fish.

Being out in nature was
just an amazing facilitator

for open, genuine connection
with people,

and it really helped me
to be able to open up

how I wanted
and realise that, you know,

I'm not alone.

♪

So now you can see, my gillnet
is draped across that section

where the larger whitefish
were coming through.

And there you go.
Gillnet is back in action.

That went together
really, really easily.

at night so they thaw out.

and they actually got frozen.

I haven't had the need

to have fire a constant
in my shelter.

I've only really
been lighting a fire

for when I needed
to cook food.

There's a little bit of
smoke build-up in my shelter,

but the worst is not the smoke.

It's actually this steam

that's coming off of everything
that's frozen in here,

like my clothes.

So it's the steam that's
in here that's so insane.

I don't really know [bleep]
what to do about it.

The shelter has been
holding onto moisture,

probably because my exhaust
from my shelter

is a hole in my roof.

And the steam is coming
from my clothes,

the water, the ground.

And as the temperature drops,
the steam is getting worse.

There's just no way I'm gonna
be able to [bleep] last

with this [bleep] shelter
being like this.

I don't know. I don't know.
Maybe, maybe not.

if I regret
making this shelter or not.

I like this shelter.
I think it's cool.

I'm glad I built
the idea that I had.

The shelter does work.

There's just a couple of
things I didn't account for.

On top of that,

the temperatures
are dropping rapidly,

and I am having
a really hard time

keeping my fingers
and toes warm.

And the temperatures are
only gonna get worse.

I really don't want
to be here anymore, Mom,

I feel like there's
a lot more growth

that needs to happen out here.
