how to make a dramatic exit,

it's Robert Patrick.

For 30 years,
he's made a living

as the villain
in blockbuster films.

The only actor
who's been offed on-screen

by all three
Planet Hollywood founders.

He's an avid rider,
a Harley guy,

and the perfect companion for
a trip through his home state.

and we're in Northern Georgia.

You never really know

where your second act in life
will take you.

After a decade living
and working in Georgia,

I've recently spent most
of my time across the pond,

just about as far away
from this place as you can be.

So it's really cool to be back

exploring a different side
of this state

with a guy who knows
how to have a good time.

Reedus: Athens has long been
a bohemian town full

of musicians and artists
and writers.

A perfect place to start.

Reedus: How long has
this place been here?

We just celebrated
five years, actually.

Oh, cool. So you can pull in.

You can work on your bike,
grab a coffee,

talk [bleep]
go for rides.

Yeah.
Cool.

Have you been up
in the Blue Ridge Mountains?
Oh, yeah.

That -- That's, like, the ride
out here, isn't it?

The Dragon up there?

we tried to ride The Dragon

a few years back.

that place is pretty popular.

The first time
I ever did that ride was one

of the first times riding
across America.

I did it
with a bunch of guys.

We got there at night
in the rain,

and we did The Dragon
at night in the rain.

Oh, my God.

The next time, I did it
in the daytime.

That was even scarier 'cause
I could actually see what...

Woman:
You could see where your...
...what the [bleep]
was going on.

You know what I mean?

What's up, Nathan?

So how long
you been coming here?

Mende: Oh, it's my first time.
Shut up.

I hate to admit it
'cause he comes

to my shop
all the time, but...

What's your shop? Boxerworks?Yeah.

Oh. Right on. What --
What do you do there?

Uh, mostly old BMWs,
1940 to 1995.

What got you into BMWs?

When I was a youngster,

my dad worked at a garage
on Saturdays,

and they had, uh, nine BMWs
in a line, pre-'70s stuff,

like the green bike
I brought out there

with the Earles front end,
the old-looking stuff.
Mm-hmm.

I wasn't allowed to ride
at my house

'cause my dad had
one leg shorter than the other.

Got hit by a bus
after the war on his bike.

So it pissed my mother off
that she wouldn't let me ride.

So when I got to school,
I scraped some money together

and bought one
and been riding them ever since

and fooling with them
ever since and...

One of Nathan's passions
for a long time

is -- is building
the world travelers

and people call all
over the world and ask --

be like, "I'm gonna go
here, here, and here.

I need a bike
that can do that.

What -- What do I need to do?"
And -- And they...

A Harley-Davidson.

[Laughter]

One of the reasons
that the old BMWs

are nice
for traveling around the world

is 'cause they're -- they're
simple to work on,

they're carbureted,
very little electronics.
Got it.

Nathan started out
as a contractor,

and he built most
of Downtown Athens.

Yeah, for a while,
I spent swinging a hammer.

You guys should come over
to the shop

and check out some
of our enduros

and some of the world travelers
that he's built.

with Dennis Hopper in Jamaica.

Kelsey Grammer, and my wife

ended up skinny-dipping with
all those guys in the ocean.

Reedus: Over the next two days,
we'll travel winding roads,

hitting the famed music scene
in Athens,

before venturing
through the Blue Ridge Mountains

to meet some
bike-riding veterans.

Then I'm off to Atlanta to catch
up with a lifelong friend

who we beat up pretty good
the last time

he joined me for a ride.

It's a three-day,
350-mile journey through parts

I've never explored
in Northern Georgia.

But lucky for me,

there's someone I know
who you may recognize

who can catch us up to speed.

The people in Georgia
are so kind.

It's a place where no matter
where you go, you feel welcome.

You can find your people
in Georgia anywhere.

Woman: You've got differences
in culture and art.

It's got everything
you could ever possibly want.

There are a lot of people
that are really willing

to volunteer and help you out.

You can be complete strangers,

yet you feel like family
no matter where you go.

or you're thinking

you can absolutely find
your place.

There is something for everyone.

We put you on your motorcycle
and stuff you.

This place is a time capsule
of air-cooled engines

and well-worn machines.

A classic BMW enthusiast's
dream come true.

bike right here.

I assumed this was.

That's what we've built
all the other bikes off of,

this thing that I built
over the years.

Ory: Nathan doesn't
believe a bike should
ever be washed, so...

the shop for 30 years.

It's been here for 20 now?
Been in this location.

I built it in '04.

And people send us bikes
from all over the world.

the first Harley I had.

After I finally made a little
bit of money in -- in Hollywood,

It was my first addition
to the shop when I got it.

I was a video-game designer
for 18 years.

Oh, really?

Yeah.
I played a lot of video games.

I'm in a bunch
of video games.

I know. I've watched
you shower so many times.

For years, people
have come in just off the street

and never ridden
motorcycles before,

never worked
on motorcycles before,

and Nathan's trained them up
to be amazing mechanics.

Is Athens a -- a huge
motorcycle community

or is it you guys?

Mende: Athens is
a pretty eclectic place,

so you get
all kinds of stuff.
Right.

Lots of off-road riding,
lots of hare scrambles,

lots of motocross.

There's a lot of bikes
around here.

Yeah.

Bill from R.E.M.'s in here.

He just lives down the street.
We do his four-wheeler for him.

But Bill, their drummer --

Reedus: Oh, really?

He's one of my oldest friends
in town.

I know Michael,
I know the R.E.M. guys.

My band opened for them
their very first gig,

and then I ended up building
his first recording studio

with John Cougar's
recording engineer.

I've known those guys
for years 'cause I've been --

I was in the music scene
for a long time here.

I've been out of it
for a long time, but...

Reedus: Nathan and Chris'
life ambitions

have taken them
on an unconventional path.

customized motorcycles around.

many places provide opportunity

for reinvention like Georgia.

We're on our way
to meet a group of misfits

who know a thing or two about
getting into a little trouble.

Reedus: Georgia is the
most beautiful place for riding.

Patrick: It's beautiful.

I love all these little towns.

Reedus: Yeah, I do, too.

When I was a little boy
living here,

I would never believe they'd be
making movies in Hollywood here.

You know?
Now it's Y'allywood.

Reedus: In the 12 years
that I spent in Georgia,

I've seen the film
and TV industry here explode.

And I'm sure
that only scratches the surface

of the transformation
that Robert has witnessed.

My first film was in 1984.

I started with Roger Corman,
the king of the B-movies.

Yeah. He's great.

Back then, if you got started
in film, you stayed in film.

You didn't want to do TV.

Yeah.

And then I ended up doing
"The X-Files."

"X-Files" is great, too.

Chris Carter gave me
that opportunity,

and I was a leading man,
and I loved it, you know?

Yeah.

It's my favorite character
I've ever played.

Yeah. Right on.

2018.

It was my idea,
and this guy right here,

he kind of tagged along
soon after I got one,

and -- and we found out
there was no outlets to race

anywhere around,
so we kind of made one.

I love it.

Reedus: When the Misfits
began modding out minibikes

with juiced-up engines
and oversized wheels,

little did they realize
they were helping to kick-start

a new motorsport craze.

As the southeast's
first official squad,

they now compete
all across the country.

[Engine revving]

Pittman: A lot of these guys
at these biker rallies,

they always tell me, you know,

it's always fun
to ride a slow bike fast.

Adrenaline rush.
Oh, yeah.

And the other thing is,
you make them yours.

You know, that one there,

Mike did all the paint,
the engine, the works.

Pittman: These things
have been a gateway

into the mechanic-ing
and motorcycle world

for a lot of people.

That's the gateway drug
right there.

It is.

with Harrison Ford,

I showed up to the set
on my Harley

and I thought
I was really cool.

and Harrison Ford
lands this helicopter.

I'm not that cool.

Harrison Ford

but I'm pretty sure I can still
show Robert a thing or two.

Wow, downtown Athens.

We're on our way
to Athens' downtown district

to meet up with a local artist
and explore one

of the most legendary
music scenes in America.

Wow, this is cool.

You can't live in Georgia, love
music, and not go to Athens.

Woman: Come here for
the art scene, the music scene.

You can find just
about everything here.

Man: Just the liveliness of it
being a college town,

there's always something
going on, so makes it fun.

Back when I got here
in the '80s,

Athens was sort of the epicenter
for alternative music culture.

Even today,
it still really does foster

that -- that creativity.

Reedus:
For a sleepy college town,

Athens has produced some
of the most quintessential bands

in American music,

from new-wave pioneers the B-52s

to alt rock royalty R.E.M.

It's been the birthplace
to everything

from the southern rock
of Drive-By Truckers

to the Elephant 6 collection,

which spawned indie icons of
Montreal and Neutral Milk Hotel.

The creative spirit of Athens

has enticed musicians
and songwriters the world over,

and David Lowery
is no exception.

Have you ever got tattooed

Lowery: I'm the only guy
who made it through the '90s

alternative rock movement
without a tattoo.

Reedus: After years of traveling
the country as front man

for alt rock bands Camper
Van Beethoven and Cracker...

for over three decades.

to my wife's club,

early '80s band
from Athens.

The only way for a band
to make any money these days

Like, back in the '90s,

we'd have twice the size
of this crew,

and we'd be on a sound stage,

and there'd be a producer,
and there'd be a director.

There was so much money
going on in the music business.

a million-dollar budget.

doing this?

Well, I was in the military.
Never did anything with tanks.

But my real career,
I worked on big merchant ships.

I worked in the engine room,

so that was
my mechanical background.

an armored personnel carrier.

It's called an FV, which stands
for fighting vehicle, FV432.

And they're English,
so I bring them from England.

Which cars pop

Explorers are a lot of fun

My first stop is
in the town of Ellijay,

which, like a lot
of towns in Georgia,

is famous for its farming.

Narrator: Today, agriculture
is going far beyond nature

to produce new miracles for an
even better, more abundant life.

There are farms everywhere.

You can yell "cow" just
about every 10 minutes or so.

There are plenty of
farm-to-table grocery stores

and restaurants here,
which is a real delight

to be able to eat real food

that was grown
right down the street.

Even though we're known
as the Peach State,

there's a lot more agriculture
that is grown here in Georgia.

Huge, huge peanut farms,
corn, soybeans, and mushrooms.

Reedus: Giant mushrooms.
That's got to be the place.

I'm visiting
with an innovative local farmer

who's bringing in both hipsters

and farmers market
fanatics alike.

I'm Howard.
Norman. Nice to meet you.

Welcome to
Ellijay Mushrooms.

When I think of mushrooms,

my mind races
to jumping Italian plumbers

and psychedelic flower children.

But mankind has been
cultivating fungi for millennia.

We have 171 acres.
40 are for the farm.

And then we have
the American Dharma Society.

So we have Buddhist monks
and nuns from all over the world

that come meditate
at the top of the mountain.

Do you have those type
of mushrooms,

like microdosing mushroom
type of thing?

They're still illegal
in the state of Georgia.

So maybe?Got it.

Do you sell to, like,
local markets or do you --

We sell to a bunch
of food distributors,

and then we have a team
of three or four in Atlanta

that we go to like
50 restaurants.

We grow about 5,000 pounds
of mushrooms a week.

Wow.
We're trying
to double that, so...

Wow.

Our first harvest
was October 2018,

and it started
with these two greenhouses.

And now we're up
to 10 of them.
Oh, wow.

They look like
little loaves of bread.

Yeah.
This is wild.

It's like I'm in a mushroom,
like, French bakery.

Yes.

These mushroom logs are
just hardwood sawdust.

So the white stuff that you see
right here is the mycelium.

Okay.So it's like your seed
of your plant.

And to harvest,
you want to get them

when the caps separate
from the gill.Okay.

So on this one,
all of them are ready,

and you just kind of grab
at the base, pull it off.

Put it into the basket.

Okay.
Perfect.

Yeah, and you can see
how meaty they are.

Yeah.
Like, most of the ones you
see in the store are real thin

and not good.
Yeah. These are --

These look really healthy.
So you just pop them out.

Tell me about the health
benefits of mushrooms.

Well, they have a lot
of vitamin D, amino acids.

Shiitakes build
your immune system.

They lower your blood pressure,
cholesterol.

They actually make your
fingernails grow, hair growth.

So all -- all mushrooms
are magic mushrooms.

They're all magic.

How did you learn
all of this?

Ever since I was a little kid,
we'd go chase grasshoppers,

mess around
on the train trestles,

and then, lo and behold,
I saw these mushrooms growing.

And back then
you'd have to go to the library

and figure out which ones are
good or which ones are bad.

So by just being outside
and a kid,

I just totally
changed my world

learning about what's growing
on that tree.

And the best part
of this farm?

its product attracts
top local chefs...

Berk: Hey, Chef.
...some even willing

to cook a gourmet meal
in the backyard shed.

So it's a mushroom
bone broth.

It's a whole bunch
of Ellijay shiitake mushrooms

dehydrated, reconstituted
with some roasted bones.

And we let this simmer
overnight.

It smells delicious.

I've had three cups of this
for breakfast.

different varieties of broth.

his childhood curiosity

ideal growing conditions, turned
it into his life's calling.
