I saw the danger that not only Roger
was fighting for number 1.

But Novak was also coming in.

they had a history.

They had played for the first time
on tour at the French Open, 2006.

Novak made his first big run at a major.

But he hadn't done much until then.

And he ended up losing
the first two sets to Rafa, 6-4, 6-4.

Then he retired citing a back injury.

Even though he's the best
and everybody thinks he's unbeatable,

I say he's not unbeatable, he's beatable.

It was a heavyweight

It felt like Rafa and Roger
were crafted by the tennis gods.

And so I had to fight
for my place under the sun.

in character from Roger and Rafa.

I mean, he was someone
who was constantly making jokes.

He was doing these imitations of players,
including Rafa.

It really didn't… bother me.

I don't remember very well

since before we were born.

I would've been six years old.

We got to know each other better
when we were teenagers.

during a summer.

during that time.

When we were living in Manacor,

And I think that
this has also made him grow up

in a very family-oriented
and also very safe environment.

and I wanted him to feel that.

when you start to lose your confidence.

And it's the fish that bites its own tail.

I start failing, I lose confidence.

I lose confidence, I fail even more.

now I just need to keep going."

I had in my head that he had surpassed me.

Now, that is five straight victories

walks into that press conference.

A guy who was sort of dazed.

You had a feeling Novak had, like…

taken his soul.

I lose because I'm playing against
the best player of the moment,

the best player of the world, tomorrow.

now seemed kind of broken.

He couldn't fight anymore.
He didn't know how.

It's a stressful time

that you have to overcome.

But as a mother,
I was worried about all that pressure.

to have to fight battles in his head

as the best under-14 player in Spain.

you get higher, you won't be the best.

but winning this tournament doesn't mean

that you are already a very good player.

All this creates insecurities in you.

and I needed to change that.

it's not just a mental issue,

it's a preparation issue.

I can give you confidence,
once you are prepared.

[Toni] The change was the forehand.

A more aggressive forehand.

I remember showing him clips.

I told him, "Federer and Djokovic,
when they hit a winner, they jump."

With that, they get an extra
in terms of speed

and, more importantly,
an extra to their will to win.

I made him hit winners from this side,

from that side, from here, from there…

[Rafa] Toni helped me
change the situation.

I was starting to feel mentally prepared.

I'd feel that, mentally,

that I could win.

And I still remember that point.

I play counter drop shot.

A pretty bad one.

By winning this point,
the match was basically won.

was limiting me quite a bit.

But, I've always felt that,

The tendon, basically, had a hole in it.

Those injuries that have been appearing…

They are a consequence of a large,
underlying problem.

with an insole throughout my career,

threw the rest of my body outta whack.

it's a chain.

So we make some changes to the foot,

and those changes
have an impact on the entire chain.

was not like when you have a fracture,

where you sort of know the time frame
for returning to competition.

in the Australian Open.

Djokovic has made it clear

After so many months without playing,

there were many people saying,
"Rafa Nadal is finished."

"He's pushed his body to the limit."

Rafa Nadal, you've been
out of competition for 102 days.

During all this time, over three months,

have you ever thought that it was the end?

Rafa Nadal's left knee recovery

is not going as quickly as expected.

That's why Nadal might be thinking
of not playing the full Indian Wells,

where he reached the semifinals last year.

[Rafa] The knee hurts either way,
if I'm playing and if I'm not.

So I'd rather keep on playing.

I went to New York…

to see a specialist.

[suspenseful music playing]

I asked the doctor,

"Do you think I can play at Indian Wells,
on hard court? "

He said, "No."

"I don't think you should play.
I don't think you can play."

The doctor told us that it was really bad,

that there was a risk
of irreparable damage.

He told us to stop.

[Rafa] We had a team meeting…
