The death of Harold Jackson, well-known

attorney, is another link in the chain

of mysterious crimes known as the purple

death murders. In each case, a subtle

unknown poison has been found in the

bloodstream of the dead man. And each

victim clutched in his hand a jeweled

scarab. The scarab by ironically was the

symbol of eternal life among the

ancients. It is significant that all of

the murdered men were actively or

financially connected with a recent

scientific expedition into the ancient

Mayan ruins of Central America. The

authorities are completely baffled and

the mayor has called District Attorney

Grant Gardner to appear before a meeting

in the office of police commissioner

Dryen.

>> Hello, Grant.

>> The commissioner's been alibiing his

failure to turn up anything in these

Purple Death murders. What are your

excuses, Mr. Gardner? I don't make

excuses, but I do have a definite plan.

commissioner and I have cleaned up crime

waves in this town before.

this scarab who invokes it must be

peculiarly mercenary.

help in a criminal investigation.

This contains a purple death. Drop that

gun or we'll all die.

The brilliant action of Grant Gardner,

the district attorney, has exposed the

source of the purple death poison. The

supreium orchid from which it was

derived will be destroyed wherever

found. Mr. Gardner is conducting a

searching investigation into the affairs

and acquaintances of Professor Lyman,

latest victim of the poison.

>> I've just come from the district

attorney's office. He's questioning all

the survivors of the main expedition.

>> He doesn't suspect us.

No,

but we have something else to worry

about.

We are not the only ones who know the

secret of Lyman's dynamic vibrator.

>> Is there another set of plans?

>> No, worse than that. There's a working

model which Lyman and his assistant

Gregory constructed at Professor Dodge's

laboratory. The district attorney is

taking some technicians here tonight to

see a demonstration and learn all about

it. But if they learn how it works, then

my secret weapon will no longer be a

secret, and someone will ultimately

devise another machine to counteract it.

Therefore, the model and Gregory must be

destroyed tonight. That won't be

difficult. The directions with these

plans show how to step up the power of

the machine so high that it'll destroy

itself along with the building and

everyone in it.

>> But suppose Captain America is on the

job again. We know that Captain America

gets information through the office of

the district attorney. All I need do is

to give the district attorney a tip

about the scarab that will send Captain

America off on a false scent.

And that I have arranged to do

tonight.

This is Eddie. Mr. Gardner, I've got a

hot tip on those purple death killings.

This machine would be a deadly weapon in

the hands of the scarab.

sworn from Professor Lyman, they

contained instructions for stepping up

the machine's power to 100 million

volts. A force that would shatter a

20story building like an eggshell.

>> Gregory is right, gentlemen.

We have directions here and we'll give

you a demonstration of what this machine

can do to this building. Now, the first

one who starts anything gets it.

pointing out that the danger is all over

now. The stolen plans of the vibrator

criminals who knew how to operate it.

The scarab is completely disarmed.

>> I'm afraid that's not entirely correct.

Commissioner, you know that Matson got

away with most of Professor Dodge's

papers and plans.

>> What were the plans?

>> The most important one was for Dodge's

portable electronic firebolt. A machine

that generates an electrical charge

powerful enough to cut through steel and

concrete like a bolt of lightning. Why,

with that weapon, they could blast open

any vault in the city.

>> But they don't have the weapon, merely

the plans. Hand in code that'll baffle

even the mysterious Scarab.

>> We're getting nowhere.

>> Professor Dodge is clever. The plans are

impossible to decode.

>> We've got to decode. With the electronic

firebolt, all the wealth and our

treasures of the world will be mine.

Well, since we can't break the code, I

shall have to persuade Professor Dodge

to do it for us.

>> But Dodge is under police protection.

The authorities are the only ones who

know where he is.

>> They won't [music] stop me. I'll get

that information from the DA's most

trusted assistant, Miss Gail Richards.

through steel and concrete, thieves last

night broke into the Hammond art

galleries. Many of the world's most

priceless paintings, old masters,

irreplaceable originals were removed.

The daring safe breakers are still at

work. Their latest objective was the

home of Jacob Mortimer, the famed

collector. Rare manuscripts and first

editions of inestimable value have

disappeared. Insurance losses to date

have already exceeded a million dollars.

Public demand for action is mounting,

and law enforcement agencies seem unable

to cope with the strange menace.

I'm getting enough criticism from the

mayor without listening to any more of

that. It's

That electronic firebolt is a powerful

weapon in the hands of criminals. But I

think we can stop them now.

>> You mean if that machine and Professor

Dodge really locates the firebolt?

the Scarab's gang.

the national platinum company's refinery

vault without interference of the

district attorney.

We know the thieves will use the stolen

firebolt again. And when they do, its

electronic radiations will illuminate

this bulb. And I'll run the pointer

along the contact points. When I make a

contact on the area where the firebolt

is working, that light will start

flashing.

Look, the electronic power boat is being

used somewhere. Now's our chance to

locate it.
