Boston. I was 14 years old and I signed

on as cabin boy on a wher.

so I ran off looking for adventure. Of

found adventure round the horn up to San

Francisco and then out here to the South

Seas. A hurricane hit us off some more

and we were blown up on the reef here.

Lost a few hands, but some of us were

washed up on the beach. Found ourselves

ashore. I was 15 years old and I opened

my eyes and there I was surrounded by

bare breasted Samoan girls about my own

age. I thought I'd gone to heaven.

And in a way I had. [laughter]

Well, that was 1838 when I found myself

in heaven.

The king la's father treated us very

well. But the first of those stitched up

bums from the London Missionary Society

was already here and he persuaded the

king that some didn't need a bunch of

American sailors on shore. So, we were

shipped away at the first opportunity.

I never forgot Samoa.

Took me eight years, but I made it back

here.

The king welcomed me like a long lost

son and offered me his niece for a wife,

Emma's mother. I stayed.

I built a business doing some trading

and now I'm American consil.

You know, Mr. Littleton

Samoans believe that these islands

were literally the Garden of Eden from

the old book in the Bible. And maybe

they were certainly had been a paradise

for me.

These are all wonderful people.

They're not greedy because everything

they need is here. They're not lustful

because sex is natural to them.

Because they travel so much from island

to island. I'm marvelously hospitable.

But most important,

the family is everything. The Ainga, the

whole related family. They got a sense

of family never seen in white society.

What they don't need, Mr. Little Thing,

is a bunch of hard-nosed, intolerant

missionaries showing them the way to

heaven. They are there already.

They don't need to be colonized

so the missionaries friends can exploit

them in pursuit of bloated profits or

some grand imperial desire.
