Most of you, at any rate, have met your
roommates.

And I hope that in the short time that
you've had that you've found them to be

people that you'd like to know better.
The question that is written on some of

your foreheads and is palpable in the
room right now is how were these

selections of roommates made?

Well, the answer for the time being, at
any rate, is going to have to be they

were made very carefully.

And you're going to have to trust us in
this matter. This year, we're all of us

going to be embarked on an adventure
into the unknown.

In technical language, it would be
called a controlled group experiment in

premarital relations.

But in real language, simple language,
it's that we're going to be exploring

ourselves through others.

Now, during this year, you're going to
be expected, well, not really expected,

you're going to be encouraged to have
sexual intimacy.

as a necessary and good element in the
art of loving, which we feel is not only

physical but spiritual.

We're going to be asking some very
difficult questions and hopefully we'll

get some answers. Questions like the
words adultery, fidelity to one partner,

exclusivity in marriage. Are these words
operative in today's society or are they

inoperative? Is love with a stranger
satisfactory or unsatisfactory?

Can a free society remain truly free
without a constant renewal of its

values?

Now, we don't claim any originality in
this quest. I mean, it's been going on

for centuries.

Socrates said, by all means, get
married. You get a good wife, you become

happy. If you get a bad wife, you become
a philosopher.

This year, we hope to find that it's
possible.

to have both those elements, the
intellectual as well as the physical, in

one marriage.

You will, of course, during the course
of the year, have the option of changing

your roommates, but that's going to be
limited to once a month.

And it's going to be an inflexible rule,
no exceptions made, because we feel very

strongly that one month is the minimum
amount of time necessary to get to know

another human being. Well, that's about
all I have to say, except good luck to

all of us.

their emotional needs, as if one person

and certainly this relationship can

exist. But more often, rather than
sharing and meeting the needs of

another, marriage means two people
sharing only their loneliness together.

responsibility.

But it's also a legal contract. What's
wrong with a legal contract?

Well, a contract can imply ownership.

Ownership implies something to be
jealously guarded.

means you care.

And so a destructive emotion like
jealousy becomes a feeling worthy of

expression. Now, in reality, we know
that jealousy is repression and

frustration.

Unfortunately, these feelings are
sometimes idealized by young people

under the notion that these are signs of
romantic love.

Assuming that marriage is based on these
strange ideas, what is the proper

approach? All right, should the approach
be a string of affairs, conventional

marriage, group marriage?

I think before we decide, we have to
root out some archaic attitudes.

a pretend situation.

to function in that situation as
honestly as you can.

Now, in these pretend situations, we
always use all the truth that's

available to us. Now, one truth is that

is that you've known each other for one

day. Use that. I think you've come to
know each other at least reasonably

well. Now, the pretend situation is that
all four of you are going to go to a

dance. Stanley's bought the ticket.

When the dance gets started, I want you
two to dance with each other.

Now, when I call an end to the exercise,
I want you to ignore me. You understand

that? I want you to go on dancing as
though I'd said nothing. The reason for

that is you're going to pretend that

the exercise.

And you're going to pretend that he's
done the same to you. So when I call an

end to it, don't pay any attention to
me. Just use terms of endearment to each

other. Hold each other close, but ignore
me.

This is after you say stop.
