harsh environments
on the planet.

the Arctic Circle.

I am so far away
from the place I belong to.

a bitch slap of reality.

This place is brutal.

Being alone out here,
it changes you.

You do lose your mind.

But maybe you find some
of your soul as well.

So as a Welshman,
I'm flying the flag

for our ancestral skills in a
way that nobody's done before.

This is about as surreal
as it can get.

I think if you're
a part of any first ever,

it's pretty exciting.

But could be an easy win
or it could be impossible.

Hopefully I won't see that
thing for quite a while.

I want to prove
that the United States

is better than anybody.

They dropped me off in
middle of nowhere.

So many mosquitoes here.

Well...

Okay, first things first.

Let's do some exploring.

The first thing to do
is obtain data.

It's not hot yet.

It's a scientific approach,

seeing what is out there and
looking for the resources.

A lot of Labrador tea.

They will eat me alive.

it would be so amazing
to do some fishing.

And a wolf, a big one.

And more and more and more.

There are so many footprints
all over the place.

But I'm definitely not afraid
of wolves and also bears,

because I'm quite used to
being in the wilderness.

But maybe I underestimate
how it is

when the big guys are coming.

So it might change if I have
a lot of encounters with bears

and they are not so pleasant
as they are in Slovenia.

And wolves and bears and wolves.

And all these flies.

In my ears, in my eyes.

I never saw so big ones
in Slovenia.

Bah!

Slovenia is definitely one
of the wildest countries

in Europe.

One of the most
common footprints.

Bears.

More than 60% is forest
and it's still quite intact.

Forest, forest, forest.

So me and my brother went
to the forest just as kids.

We fell in love for
this outdoor life.

So we actually started a
survival school back in 2014.

We are really focused on
to build from scratch

everything they need to survive.

If I win half a million dollars,

I would definitely increase
our survival school,

Gozdovnistvo bush craft and
survival school in Slovenia.

And maybe buy a small property
out in the woods

where my family
could spend their time.

They are my inspiration.

My wife, she's super stubborn
and she doesn't give up.

I would also like to show
my son what he might achieve

if he really goes for something.

As fish biologist,
I have advantage

over other participants.

I understand
how fish are moving,

what kind of food
they are looking for.

Whoo-hoo!

I'm very proud
to represent Slovenia,

coming from one
very small country,

and I would like to show

it doesn't matter
where you're coming from.

Show them who's the boss.

my temporary shelter.

A really nice spot.

It's much better without flies.

And basically,
it's like a flat shelf.

And I have a really,

really nice view
down to the river.

So basically,
I could set my fish lines

and just observe them while
I'm doing other stuff up here.

Another thing is it's a
really nice shooting range.

Will be sufficient
for a couple of days.

And later on, I will look
for more permanent shelter.

And now, guys,
I'm super thirsty.

It's time to start preparing
water that I will drink.

We are here in lowland.

And water,
it has a lot of different

parasites and bacteria.

So treating water
is really important.

But I don't have a ferro rod
to make fire easily.

These rubber boots are
luckily waterproof,

so I will just fill one
completely with water.

Luckily, I have
a very cool technique

to get drinkable water.

And this can give me advantage

because I can go without fire
for a very long time.

Okay.

I will use my shemagh.

Actually, I could use
also T-shirt or whatever.

So the idea is,
if you put it like here

and you leave it like this,
you realize that at some point,

water will get up
to higher point.

So I let it get over here

and into the pot.

When water travels
through this shemagh

or any piece of cloth,

this is actually
the principle of capillarity.

And you can see it's getting
wet and it's spreading.

And the point is that water
and very, very small particles

can travel easier
than bigger particles.

So it's filtering.

And I might speed it up
to make it double.

And I know from
my previous experiences

it is gonna be
good enough for drinking.

Look at that color difference.

In Slovenia,
I have been out in the wild

for so many times
without ferro rod.

And for me, this competition
is not only about winning.

It's also about
testing my skills

and showing to the world
that you can do anything

with less gear.

I don't really know if
I could have hit him better.

I grew up in Palmer, Alaska.

Good morning, sir.

I was a high school principal.

I bring the wilderness
with me everywhere that I go.

I just recently retired.

I loved my job because I was
able to make a difference.

But now I need
another challenge.

I need something to push me
as hard as I can be pushed.

In my 52 years in Alaska,

this is what I was raised to do.

Every time I go into the woods,
really, I'm going home.

I've been a hunter
my entire life.

I've hunted every animal
that walks this land.

I owned a fishing guide
service for 23 years.

I've caught every fish
that swims in this water.

This area is my backyard.

That's a huge advantage.

One snowshoe hare.

I've been snaring
since I was a kid.

I recently moved to
Mountain View, Hawaii.

I'm trying to live sustainably.

$500,000... that provides me

the rest of my life
with adventure.

This is the first
"Alone" World Championship.

I'm representing America.

That's gonna push you
even harder.

I don't see myself being
anywhere but the winner.

There's a pretty
heavy trail right here.

I think I'm just gonna
head back this way.

We're here at fall time.

Looks like I got
a decent spot to fish.

As far as the animals here,

it's probably the most
dangerous part of the year.

Caribou are coming into rut.

They're full of adrenaline.

And grizzly bears are trying
to get full before wintertime.

They're hunting
the same animals.

Winter's coming,
and they're gonna do

whatever they can
to prepare for it.

I gotta boil some water.
I'm thirsty.

I haven't drank yet, so
I'm gonna do that right now.

a little spot for a fire.

My end goal at the end of this

is to see how hard
I can push myself.

This is a personal challenge.

This is a world
championship contest.

I believe that us in the West

have a considerable
advantage because

our life is based on practice
and not theory.

Some of the competitors
are very highly skilled.

They've been to fairs.
They've been to camps.

They've watched YouTube videos.

They've made all kinds of
cool stuff in their backyard.

But, um,

there's gonna be a bitch slap
of reality in a month.

I started my fire,

for me, you know.

leaning on when I got out here.

for a small walk,

and see what I can
and can't see.

I know that
there's so much to do,

nice and simple right now,

the first bit of mud,

probably 50 meters away from
where I got dropped off.

I live in New Zealand.

I have zero experience
with grizzly bears.

We shot a massive,
massive Chamois buck.

The odds I was fighting
to even get a shot

into this guy is just so lucky.

Super stoked.

I was brought up in
New Zealand on a small farm.

Just out here doing
a bit of daily exercise.

I live on the West Coast

of the South Island
of New Zealand.

That's where I started
to just enjoy

and appreciate the fresh air

and the excitement of adventure.

I probably spend close to 100
nights away from home hunting.

I believe bow hunting is my
bread and butter, for sure.

That's what I live for.

I remember getting my first
compound bow when I was 13.

I shot my first deer with it,

and then it was just
a real floodgates open.

I wanted to partake
in this competition

to build my mental game.

This is the perfect environment

to push it
to the very, very edge.

It's unreal.

I've got an amazing view
of the mountains.

I still live at home
with my parents,

and they support me greatly.

Having the chance to win
this large amount of money

to help out my family...
that would be phenomenal.

To represent New Zealand
on a world stage

is definitely nothing
but excitement and pride.

I believe
I've got more than enough

of what it will take to be
the last person, for sure.

I'll make some snares.

And just trying to avoid
getting bitten by bugs

or getting sun burnt
is today's task.

One of the biggest priorities
of what I need to do,

it's mainly food.

It's a blue sky
and it's a beautiful day.

I'm not worried about rain.

So instantly, I'm gonna go out

and try to get something
for dinner tonight.

My first bit of protein.

A mosquito.

I need to have as much food as
I possibly can because I know

I'm gonna need quite
a lot to sustain myself,

sustain my body to be here.

a stalk on them.

my first ever grouse.

This place, this is gonna be it.

Kind of means a lot
early on in the game.

You know, it's only one bird,

but now I've got feathers
to make lures and flies,

bones to make needles,

and a little bit of protein
for the next couple of days.

Took me a long time
to fall asleep

because of my screw up
yesterday.

I'm trying to estimate
just how many fires

I can start
with what I got left.

I can start quite a few.

One thing I gotta do is

I'm not the best
friction fire starter.

So I think today,

today I'm gonna have to
work a little bit better

on a shelter so I have
a really good area

inside that shelter
to make fire.

I thought my whole thing
out here

would be food and shelter,

but now fire becomes
just as important.

God, I wish I wouldn't
have done that.

I'm gonna move this stuff over,
clear this land,

and just get started.

For a permanent shelter,

I've decided to build
a basic A-frame.

Put my tarp over it,

and I'll put logs and moss
on it after that.

That will carry me through

the really cold nights
that are gonna come.

I'm gonna start
collecting some poles.

I have done enough exploring

that I know I have
good resources here.

There's some swamps
upriver from me.

There's dense willow patches.

Those are the type of areas
that I'm gonna have

the opportunity to set snares.

I want to build a good base
for me to sleep in,

then I'll be a lot more
serious about hunting stuff.

This is like being on
"The Truman Show."

You know, like, ooh,
everyone's watching me.

Everybody's seeing my mistakes.

We're making plenty of them,

I know there's people
at home that'll judge me

for the mistake that I made

You walk out there

and you're gonna
shake the guy's hand

but sometimes you find
yourself on your back.

And that's the same thing
out here.

Things are not
gonna go smoothly.

That will definitely work.

Every one of us, me especially,

are going to make mistakes.

I've seen beaver sign
on the edges of the river.

I can't light a fire until
I have a large amount of food

because I'm only
gonna be able to light

so many fires with what
I got left of my ferro rod.

If I can catch this beaver,
I can smoke it

and have food for several weeks.

He goes right through here.

Then I can work on my shelter,

practice with a bow and drill
and get better at it.

I just need to tie it down.

And then I can really
make a run out here.

easy spot to snare.

Pretty cool if I could catch a
good-sized beaver and smoke it.

Yesterday, I shot a grouse,

and instantly I can use
the grouse guts for bait,

which is great.

These are my assorted
fishing hooks.

So I'm gonna put
a wire leader on it.

Just play it safe starting off
if I catch a pike.

My strategy for gaining food
is gonna be a blend

of fishing and hunting

and seeing which ones

are gonna be the most lucrative.

I'm putting energy
into trying to explore

every sort of nook and cranny
of my block.

a beaver scrap.

I'm seeing great potential

for what I think I need
to win this competition.

within five minutes' walk.

be asking for in a location.

I've never even seen
a pike in real life.

It's a tiny one,
but it'll be dinner.

a wonder on the pike.

Getting a moose
is super important

to stay here for a long time.

Being able to tap into a large
amount of its fat stores,

I could just hang out
here forever.

Canadian Moose.

Okay, now it's about food.

So putting a lot of snares.

I know that in long term,

this is some kind
of hunger game.

So getting food
as soon as possible

is very important for survival.

That looks nice.

So my food strategy is mostly
passive, because basically,

I'm not a hunter.

Nice one.

I'm not really aiming
for big game

unless it comes and I see it,

or I see very obvious footprints

and I might follow it.

But I won't spend too much
time on active hunting.

I don't want to waste
too much energy.

So snares are for sure
a very good way to get meat.

It's just good enough.

Everything looks good.

Definitely this is not a place
for permanent shelter.

It's super nice, panorama view.

The problem is,

it's facing west.

Especially later in winter,

sun is gonna be very low
behind these mountains.

The only option
is to go more south.

Another thing is,
the longer I'm here,

the more snares
there will be out,

and I will have
to move all of them.

So I think it's
the sooner the better.

My plan was first
to move after a week,

but I realized it's better
to move as soon as possible,

because you're
investing your time

to set up snares,

fish spring pools,
and all other stuff.

It's a lot of energy.

So it's very important to find

optimal permanent location
quickly.

It's gonna be
definitely a challenge

because it's super difficult
to pass this terrain.

I don't like
too much what I see here.

We are on the edge
of taiga forest.

It's muddy, swampy,
super thick vegetation.

This is the reason why,
historically,

not many people lived out here.

It's so important that you
have easy access to water,

to berries, a fishing spot,

or location where
you can put snares.

So there are many,
many different things

which is difficult to find.

Quite exhausted.

Very long walk.

But I think
it's worth the effort

because it makes a difference
on the long run.

for permanent shelter.

shelter built right away.

fishing, and acquiring food.

I'm gonna make a log cabin.

It's a hybrid lean-to,
just built out of logs.

I need to harvest a bunch of
logs about 8 to 10 feet long,

and I'll stack them high
on one side,

make a roof down to a low side,

and then just put the walls up.

This shelter is gonna be
a lot of hard work.

It's gonna take a lot of energy.

But I believe that it will be
beneficial in the long run.

I plan on staying out here
for a very long time,

so I want something
that's out of the weather.

I want something that
will keep me warm during

the cold months
and feels like home.

Oh, my goodness.

We are eating,
ladies and gentlemen.

Growing up on a small
hobby farm, my childhood,

a lot of it was hard work.

There's another
good chunk of meat.

My dad was an avid outdoorsman.

My grandpa as well.

Every weekend, we were
camping, hunting, fishing.

Oh, yeah. Nice fish.

I've killed
many moose in my day.

My top three survival skills
is definitely hunting...

Mental toughness,
and then bush craft.

Yeah, these feel good.

You know, I fought
mixed martial arts.

I've played rugby.

I've played pretty crazy sports.

And this is the scariest,
hardest,

craziest thing a person can do.

This season's
definitely different,

especially it being the World
Championship in my country.

So there's added pressure there.

Push her into the snow.

and tough Canadians are.

And not go down easy or at all.

line on it, probably 50 feet.

the moose hunting begins.

It's so quiet right now.

That moose call
should carry a long way.

because of all
the grizzlies and wolves.

My hunting strategy is
to find a big game animal.

I carry my bow with me
at all times.

I'm just looking on both sides.

Looking for sign,
looking for anything.

It'll be exciting to see
some fresh moose tracks.

As I walk, I always call,
just because

it's getting close
to prime time moose hunting.

And once the rut comes
into full effect,

I'm gonna harvest a moose.

and deal with the things

that need to be done

This is a spot with
a lot of hare activity,

but there's no obvious place
to put a snare, so...

All the trees are
very widely spaced,

so it doesn't make sense
to put a normal snare here.

So what I'm gonna do instead

is build a hare trap.

I am focusing my attention
on snaring.

I'm seeing a lot of sign
of smaller game.

Just got my four cross members.

This is a multi-phased game.

In the early stages,
the priority

has to be to keep
my calorific intake up.

Our first beam at this point.

The early part of this,
I'm expecting to be busy.

I'm gonna be building
my shelter.

I'm gonna be fishing.

I'm gonna be foraging,

hopefully hunting
some big game as well.

And then as it gets much colder,

the resources
become more scarce,

I will be conserving
a lot of my energy.

Now then, we need to block off

all the alternative routes
into this

so that they have to go
through the snares.

The environment that I'm in
isn't quite the same

as anywhere
I've ever been before.

This is a whole different
world from what I'm used to.

Wales is a very
temperate climate.

It very rarely gets below zero.

in a short-term situation,

they're gonna outrun me.

But I see this as more of
a hare and the tortoise,

and I'm definitely
the tortoise in this game.

doing this for myself.
