on the south side of Lockerbie.

There are casualties amongst
the town's people.

We don't know how many.

Bodies have been found up
to two miles away.

There's no immediate indication
of why the plane crashed.

Officials say there was
no other airplane involved,

and rule out a mid-air collision.

No explanation yet why the plane
crashed from 31,000 feet.

Tonight here in Lockerbie, the town
is settling down as best it can

to a tragedy which has destroyed
Christmas for the community.

Local people say they can hardly
find the words to express

their grief at a catastrophe
many of them actually witnessed.

"Like an earthquake," said one.

"The sky seemed to be raining fire,"
said another,

"The day none of us
will ever forget."

We didn't know
what happened. It was all chaos.

And then, out the window,
all this debris raining down.

I saw this great fireball,

and then, just flames everywhere.

It seemed to go on forever.

It was like hell,
the whole road burning.

So much has been broken here.

But we're about to find out
