The movie Warcraft opened in the USA and flopped big time

Interestingly though, in the global market it did pretty well

Especially in China

it's became a box office monster, and outgrossed Star Wars: The Force Awakens

and 'Iron Man 3's Chinese revenues

The past five years, the Middle Kingdom's movie market has grown by 30% annually

and was predicted to be bigger than the American market by 2017

Because of this ginormous growth, a new trend is rising

namely for Hollywood actors to try their luck in China

The film 'Dragon Blade' starring Adrian Brody and John Cusack is just one of the successful examples

If there's one guy who's worked smartly to make it big in China, it's Nicolas Cage

Several of his movies have made it past the government's strict censorship laws

so he's very well known over there

In fact back in 2013 he even won the Best Global Actor in Motion Pictures award

Think about that for a second

they voted Nicolas Cage the best actor in the world

Who were the other top contenders

Steven Seagal, Adam Sandler and Sylvester Stallone?

And this is not some small time indie-award

but a live-streamed broadcast event with an audience of 800 million people!

that prompted Cage to shoot his first ever film in China, 'Outcast'

Of course it's not just sidetracked actors who try their luck in China

With their growing economy and a population of over 1.3 billion people

it's certainly a lucrative market for studio bosses

Especially because the Chinese government has expanded the amount of foreign films that can be shown in theaters from 20 to 34 a year

One franchise that's insanely beloved in China is 'Transformers

And with the third part raking in well over a billion dollars

the producers decided to have the fourth one, 'Age of Extinction', take place in the country where they appreciate the giant robots the most

Well they’ve been I think our second biggest market the last two movies

You know, it’s interesting. In the early eighties

Transformers’ the cartoon series was one of the only programming the government let in

and So the Chinese have a love of Transformers because there just wasn’t that much entertainment

But also visually we wanted to do something that’s different and present the audience with things no one had seen

So we got to shoot not only in Hong Kong and the Great Wall,where people have seen it

we also shot in places like Chaijing and Oolong and things that people had never seen before

when you do that it creates a larger experience

Yeah, mostly for his wallet though. But it worked.

The movie scooped in over 1.1 billion dollars, making it the 16th highest grossing film ever

With the Chinese movie market
getting bigger and bigger

we predict you'll soon see lots more
American actors in Asian productions

while on the other hand, in American movies

we can expect more and more action heroes to make a trip to the country or at least have a Chinese sidekick

Nicolas Cage is one of the most diverse actors of our time

and his films range from really fantastic to complete garbage

Today we’ll be looking at his spending habits

and they’re pretty extreme to say the least

But first let's take a glance into his movie pilgrimage to China

Actor Nicolas Cage hit the red carpet in 2018 for the 3rd annual edition of the International Film Festival and Awards Macao

The star gave a masterclass in the Chinese city-state, and served as a talent ambassador for the fest

working to bring more big names to the rapidly growing event

In this exclusive interview, Cage explains why he’s so connected to the region

Well, I’m very blessed to have had a nice relationship with Asia

If anything, I’m here to say thank you to that as well, because if anything, they’ve really kept me working

You know, my relationship with the cinema and the industry in Asia is the reason I’m still here

so any chance I get to say thank you, I do.

But it’s been a long time. It’s been 40 years, over 100 movies, so it’s kind of a nice feeling,You know?

I don’t really think about it, but once I’m here and people seem interested and having a conversation with me, it makes me feel pretty good

And the actor thinks things will only get better

I think it’s really the future. I think that the Chinese cinema and the industry of filmmaking in China, and really all over Asia, is the new way

And that’s why so many people in the United States want to have that relationship

and I, once again, have been blessed that I’ve been, maybe because I work with John Wu, or because I work with the Pang brothers

that I’ve had a connection here, and I’ve always felt welcome here

So it’s nice… …I mean, everyone wants to be a part of it. This is the new way

Back to the spending habits of this superstar

in 2011, the Oscar-winner went bankrupt after spending over $150 million on well… things he just wanted to have

He once outbid Leonardo DiCaprio for a 67 million year old dinosaur skull

valued at over $300,000

Apparently he owned a couple of them

But besides fossilised animals, he also bought some ones that were still alive

Cage had two albino king cobras named Moby and Sheba

worth $267,000

As they’re highly poisonous, Nic carried anti-venom with him at all times

Then he blew $150,000

on an octopus that, according to Cage, helped him with his acting

Additional pets included a shark and a crocodile

While the nature of some of his domesticated wildlife is a bit frightening

he bought other stuff that’s even creepier than the residents of his private zoo

Did you know Nic got himself an actual pyramid to be buried in when he dies?

And things get even weirder

According to visitors, he also owns a collection of shrunken pygmy heads

Still, we’re nowhere near wasting 150 mil

It’s mostly the vehicles and real estate that did all the damage

Cage owned no less than 15 multi-mullion dollar mansions around the world.

Not extravagant enough?

Let’s add in two European castles

Cage has already crossed that off his bucket list

But his fortresses, located in the UK and Germany, can be a bit chilly

So the actor also purchased not one but two private islands in the Bahamas

Clearly Nic has a taste for the macabre, so it might not surprise you to learn that he spent about $3.5 million on a haunted house in New Orleans

And when the A-lister travels from place to place, he of course does so in style

He spent millions on specialty and vintage vehicles

At one point he owned about 30 motorcycles and 50 cars

Among his most prized possessions were 9 Rolls Royces, a super rare Ferrari Enzo

and a Lamborghini Miura which he bought from the late Shah of Iran

Price tag for that one car alone?

$450,000.

Cars and bikes only get you so far though

so Cage also got himself a sweet private Gulfstream jet

Oh, and did we mention he owned no less than four luxury yachts?

He named one of them Sarita

That lovely boat’s worth $20 million and features 12 master bedrooms

Furthering his spending frenzy

Nicolas bought lots of expensive jewellery for the ladies in his life

and owned a very respectable art collection

Spending cash the way Nic did can be fun

but that’s only the case when you actually have that much money to burn

These days the celebrity super spender lives a much more relaxed life

and it seems like he’s said goodbye to his habit of excessively depleting his bank accounts

That action sequence comes from 'Transformers: Age of Extinction' and was just one of many

The fourth outing in the blockbuster franchise made well over a billion dollars

despite getting poor reviews at the same time

This makes it an interesting movie to examine, to say the least

So, let's investigate further

One reason so many people went to watch it is the endless amount of stunts, action and special effects

Of the 2 hour and 45 minutes run time, a staggering 70 minutes are used for action sequences

Also, almost all the stunts were done by the actors themselves, with only the really crazy stuff performed by stuntmen

Running across that roof in Hong Kong, that whole action scene was with me and Titus Welliver

where he was chasing me down the building, and we fall and fall into the window

It's crazy

very nice

We probably did about eighty or ninety percent of our own stunts

which was a great experience because we’re both independent filmmakers initially

And to have the opportunity to be on a set where we were part of all these amazing practical effects

It’s just… it’s a great experience

go go go

When the slow motion of Jack, Mark and myself are in that huge explosion

we found out only a few minutes before we were doing it

and I mean it was so exciting to be a part of that and to have it all be real

look at this

Oh my god!

Oh my god!

That’s cool Jack. Were you yelling?

- were you yelling jack?
- I was yelling!

Another reason this film and the other 'Transformer' movies are doing so well comes down to marketing

The franchise is huge in Asia, especially China, the world's second largest movie market

For 'Age of Extinction', the filmmakers really went all out to please their Asian audience

working together with a movie channel owned by the government

including product placement of some prominent local products and featuring famous native Chinese actors

They had Chinese actors and actress, that makes the Chinese audience more connected with the Transformer film

So that’s why I think

now it’s only three days

they already got one hundred million dollars box office in China

Like all the movies in the series,Age of Extinction is directed by Michael Bay

At first, he planned to quit after the third film

but later realized he wasn't ready to give up on the franchise just yet

Next year another one will be released, titled 'The Last Knight' and once again Bay will be at the helm

The super city has boomed exponentially in the last 20 years

Its population was well over 24 million people as of 2017, and continues to rise

An important thing to know about Shanghai is that you need a visa if you want to stay there for more than 3 days

And since getting a visa is kind of a hassle

most visitors will try to do as much as possible in just 72 hours

This gives the city a certain energy that’s unlike any other place in the world

Iconic action hero Jackie Chan was born in Hong Kong to Chinese parents

The future star was an athletic youth, nicknamed cannonball for his acrobatic tendencies

After Jackie failed his first year of primary school

his parents sent him to the China Drama Academy where he studied acting, singing, acrobatics, and of course, martial arts

I really happy to hear that people like martial arts, because I’m the martial artist.

Chan started appearing in movies at the age of 5

working his way up to become a stuntman on Bruce Lee pictures in his teens

Finally, 1978’s Drunken Master

created the fusion of comedy and action that his fans know and love today

The whole world needs a good movie

Every country presents his own movie

I think the whole world, the audience needs a comedy, drama, action, all kind of movie

After dominating Asian markets for years in the 80s and 90s, in 1998 Jackie finally had his first big hit in North America with the action comedy ‘Rush Hour’

opposite comedian Chris Tucker

The movie’s blockbuster success brought him to a whole new level of fame

I think I’m the luckiest man in the world, you know

There’s so many fans around the world, they know me

and they love me, support me

So this why every time I make a good movie, I think about the fans

For all the fans around the world

A series of hits followed, but they were all variations on a theme

playing a fish-out-of-water character who happens to be a martial arts expert

He starred with Owen Wilson in ‘Shanghai Noon’ and ‘Shanghai Knights

then re-teamed with Tucker for ‘Rush Hour’ parts 2 and 3

But Chan wanted more from his career

I just love movie, I love action

but I know action star life is so short

I want to be an actor, actor who can fight is not a fighter who can act.

In 2003, the star created his own production company

and his movies began to feature more dramatic elements

He also expanded his work as a writer and director, and made more family friendly films

like starring in the remake of Karate Kid

lending his voice to Kung Fu Panda

and working with real children in The Spy Next Door

which turned out to be more difficult than he expected

When you’re doing a stunt around the children, you have to make sure they safe

And off screen, his life is devoted to movies as well

In addition to his production company

Jackie has invested in a chain of cinemas in China

an academy for training stuntmen

and even a full film school where he’s the dean

Chan has carefully nurtured the next generation of Asian actors

I just tell them 'don't rush to the world’

you have to

have a good foundation in your local market first.

In 2017, Chan took on his most serious role to date

as a grieving father seeking revenge against the terrorists who killed his daughter in The Foreigner

Very dramatic role

When I speak the dialogue, so easy to hear it coming out

The movie, when you see the tear coming down, it’s not eyedrops. It’s real

In his many many movies, Jackie Chan always saves the day

But of course, he’s not satisfied with only being a hero on the screen

Bruce Lee was the one who popularized Asian martial arts in Hollywood in the 1960's and 70's

And since then there have been all kinds of feds and trends including Judo, Taekwondo

and more recently actually Krav Maga, which is the Israelian defense forces version of martial arts

Celebrity practitioners of Krav Maga include Daniel Craig, Jennifer Lopez

Tom Cruise and even Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie

So yeah, they really were just like their characters in Mr. and Mrs. Smith

Well, until they broke up that is

The reason so many celebs are into all kinds of martial arts is because it’s not only a great way to stay in shape

it also helps clear the mind and has almost meditative qualities

Martial arts combines a physical discipline with sport, but it also has a very spiritual and mental aspect.

And it's really great of course for weight loss and for building muscle

but it's also good for mental clarity and kind of a meditative aspect

Most of all though, I would say, it's a great self defence mechanism which any woman in Hollywood would know at this time is really, really important

The best part for movie stars of knowing how to handle themselves in a fight

is that it looks cool on camera as well

And adding some combat skills to the resume is very useful for any actor

regardless of if they’re a household name or the new kid on the block
