of a memoir about our experience.

but for me

this wasn't the scary part.

The scary part happened long before
anything went wrong,

when we were sailing merrily
on a trip to Alpha Centauri,

because the idea of space

has scared me for as long as
I can remember."

was darker than dark

and colder than cold,

and worst of all, empty.

I can't think of a lonelier place.

My mom thinks that space isn't empty
after all.

That it's filled with dark matter
we just can't see.

I'm not a scientist like her.

I don't believe in things just because
they make the equations add up.

I need to learn things for myself

and that's where the trouble always
starts.

But I'm getting ahead of myself.

This is the story of discovery...

but not of strange new worlds.

It's about discovering what's
in the places you thought were empty.

Sometimes

it's the invisible force of my family...

pulling at me,
even when I can't see them...

reminding me...

[exhales]

...that I'm never really alone.

And sometimes it's about discovering

horrible monsters that want
to bite your face off."

where the French and the Germans

decided to stop shooting at one another

and came out of the trenches
to celebrate together.

that on the last planet we were marooned

because we ran out of fuel

and on this planet
we have the fuel for air,

but no way to use it?

-I don't believe in irony.
-Which is, in fact, ironic.

[vehicle rattles]

There's a remote spot in Venezuela

where they have lightning storms
in the exact time and place

265 days a year,
and nobody knows why that happens either.

-They call it the Beacon of Maracaibo.
-[distant thunder rumbling]

And it's guided sailors for centuries.

If you have clouds and sun, or two suns,

to heat them up,

you're going to have lightning.

That much is true no matter where you are.

[Don speaks indistinctly]

[Penny] You've got this.
You've got this whole puzzle.

-You're gonna figure it out.
-[Don] See, here's the thing...

the trick about puzzles is that...

then jumpstart the Jupiter.

This is crazy.

People have been using this technology
for thousands of years.

and I-- I think we have a window.

And if we miss it, it's--
It's going to be another year.

This is about that thing in the garage.

That thing in the garage

brought us halfway across the universe.

It's the only way
we're gonna get to Alpha Centauri.

I thought you'd given up on it.

You don't have to understand a tool
to use it.

The robot's engine is inert,
it's as... asleep.

and the last time it worked

we were in space.

We just need to recreate those conditions.

And what if you still can't figure it out?

Well, there are four other planets
in this system.

I mean, maybe one of them is better.

I'm not risking the lives of our kids

because things may be better.

Things can always be better,

but sometimes you have to appreciate
what you've got.

Our kids will never meet anyone new here.

No friends... to confide in,

or to challenge them
or to understand them.

They'll never fall in love here.

They'll never have families of their own.

Babe, they'll never have what we have.

We have to leave.

the atmosphere just forced its way in,

This is Will Robinson
of the 24th Colonist Group.

I'm making a record of this,
because it seems

we're the first humans to try and turn
a spaceship into a sailboat.

[grunting]

[John] Don!

[Don] I'm trying!

[Maureen] Be careful! Is that good?

[all grunting and sighing]

[Maureen] By historic standards,
it's a pretty easy journey.

I'm hoping to achieve a speed
of four to five knots.

At a hundred nautical miles per day,

that'll make it a two-day trip.

Then we recharge the ship's battery
in the middle of a giant lightning storm.

First, we need to get there.

It's basically a straight shot.
We have to avoid this archipelago here,

because it has a pretty jagged coastline.

Um, how jagged?

If we hit it, we sink.

Which is why we are gonna steer
well clear of it.

You said the monsoon winds
are changing by the day.

They gonna push us in the direction
of the jagged coastline?

Once the winds change, yes,

but we have plenty of time
to get there before that happens.

And luckily, your father has spent
half of his life on boats,

and he's a pretty seasoned captain.

We've been just a family for a while.

We have to remember
how to be a crew again.

Tomorrow's a big day.

[Maureen] Hey.

[Will] Just trying to be prepared.

If we get the robot engine going,

it can take us anywhere, right?

We're trying to sail downwind
without the use of a rudder,

so you're gonna have to raise
and lower the halyards

to keep us on course.

[Judy] Halyards?

[John] Ropes. Work the sails up and down.

[Penny] So halyard's just a fancy name
for rope?

Got it.

If the ship starts turning to port,

you'll lower the starboard halyards,
and vice versa.

[John] Raise the halyards!

[Judy grunting]

[Don] I've gotta hand it to you, Maureen.

to make this voyage a success,

because Penny was too busy throwing up.

Pretty soon,
we're gonna be off this planet.

[John] I didn't want it all to end.

[Maureen] We're surrounded by water
we can't drink

and air we can't breathe.

[John] But we made our home here.

Finally, we were all together again.

[Maureen] We're still together.

[gasps]

We're caught in the current.
