But after the Custer massacre,
his work appeared in Harper's,

And finally,

It was practicin' followin' me.

It was a hoop snake,
an eight-foot hoop snake.
It had its tail in its mouth,

And I ran and I ran

run anymore, and I dropped.

- And then you know what?

And then I woke up in
the best hotel in Tucson,
in the best room.

And they said
I came rollin' into town...

all curled up
in this hoop snake,
just rollin' in.

And they said that hoop snake
saved my life,

or I would've dried up
in the desert out there.

- Saved my life.
- Why do you suppose
he was followin' ya?

Well, he--
he wanted my hat.

But he was too polite
to ask for it,
so he saved my life for it.
