We started off this
search with 7,000 acres,

and we have honed it
down to one single mountain.

We are right at bigfoot's front step.

We're closer than
we've ever been before.

A powerful storm system

is passing over northern California.

The storm, fueled by
an atmospheric river,

could dump up to five
inches of rain in coastal areas.

And some snow in the mountain.

It looks like that storm is closing in.

to help us pinpoint their exact location.

To do this, the team will be using

a surveillance array of
eight high powered optical

and thermal cameras
covering the mountainside,

all driven by artificial intelligence

that can recognize
upright, bipedal animals.

this side of the mountain

on our surveillance

and unfortunately we
haven't gotten any hits.

We've seen things on all fours,

for upright walking bipedal creatures,

which we haven't seen yet.

The problem is, all the elements

are really working against us right now.

This is incredibly steep, it's slippery,

and we can't really hear as
things move through the forest

because of all the rain and the hail.

We're really starting
to lose them out here.

This is making it
impossible to see anything.

The weather has been all over the place,

and now we're getting
these waves of fog

rolling through the mountains.

If it gets any thicker, this system

won't be able to detect anything.

and I'm getting just a real

uneasy feeling being here,

Infrasound is something that we've

explored with these creatures

that could be the cause

of these uneasy feelings.

Infrasound is sound

below the range of human hearing,

which is generally
accepted as below 20 hertz,

it can be generated
by natural phenomena

like earthquakes and volcanic eruptions,

as well as by animals

such as whales, tigers and elephants.

Some humans can be
adversely affected by it.

Bigfoot researchers suggest that

big foot can not only
communicate using infrasound,

but can use the sound waves

to disorient other animals.

apex structures with ornamentation.

the same group of big foot from Alaska?

After losing communication with the rest

of the team for over two hours

and as the snow continues to fall,

a half mile from Bryce,

mireya proceeds to
search in the direction

the heat signatures were
last known to be heading.

has changed so dramatically,

even just in the time that I've been

out here searching,

that now we've got a buildup of snow,

which, up to this point,

the weather has been really hurting

and challenging us,
like we're down comms.

but this might actually help us

in looking for tracks.

If I'm honest, what it reminds me of

is very much like a nest
a gorilla would make.

The thing that strikes me

is that this was just constructed.

Look how fresh those pine needles are.

I mean, they're bright, bright green.

I don't want to touch anything

because I want to be able

to collect evidence from this.

But look at this, the way that all this

is sort of woven on the bottom

to create this geometrical shape

and then all of this bedding

right in the middle, I mean,

the nests that we found in
northern California in the past,

they didn't look recent.

This is crazy.

And the thing about
primates, like gorillas,

when they make a nest,

it's to sleep in that night and
only that night, which means...

We're in something's territory.

And having two nests
this close to each other,

we could be looking at a family group.

But given the size of the nest,

we're looking at huge animals.

What I want to find is what made these.

that means that we're really close,

and this is the closest we've ever been.

that we're looking at a juvenile.

Different size prints proves
more than one creature.

That means that we could
have identified a family group,

and we've zeroed in on
their breeding grounds.

I want nothing more than to
sit here and clean this thing out

detail by detail,

but I gotta meet up with the team.

I gotta show them these tracks.

This is the first one I found.
Look how wide this thing is.

Look how flat and wide that thing is.

Look at the size of this thing.

I mean, this is really interesting.

You can see how there is what
looks to be the toes splaying.

And we wear shoes, so
you don't often see this

because our toes are always constricted.

I'm looking at these prints,

and I'm observing
interesting physiological traits,

like the way that the
toes are splayed out,

which is interesting
because that tells you

a lot about locomotion.

In environments just like this,

where I worked with natives
who never wear shoes,

you can see the toe splay.

In fact, you see a thickening of their sole.

The feet are a reflection
of the environment...

And this is something
that's walking upright.

Wow. This is a great find, Russ.

What makes this unique

is having a side by side print like that,

you have the left foot and the right foot,

which is like the holy grail

of collecting these footprints.

Well done, man. That's incredible.

This is about two-thirds
the length of this one.

Judging by the size.

I feel like this is the biggest one, right?

That's huge.

In primates, there's a lot of
cases of sexual dimorphism

where the male is
bigger than the female.

Sexual dimorphism is
a term used in science

to describe size differences

between a male and
a female in a species.

We don't see this in all animals,

but we do see it a lot
in primates like gorillas

where the silver back male

is going to be significantly
larger than a female.

So we could be looking at a juvenile print

or we could be looking at a female print.

Gorillas, in particular, male gorillas,

are 30% larger than female gorillas.

Man.

I think this might have been a juvenile...

- Yeah.
- And an adult.

Told it to start up,
circle back and go down.

You know, it's so funny
that you mentioned juvenile

because last night,

you know, I was tracking
this third anomalous target

which led me into this zone,

and, Russ, I found an upside
down tree stuck into the ground.

It wasn't a tree, it was smaller,

but it was in there like
three and a half feet.

- Like Alaska upside down tree?
- Yes, much smaller

and just more ominous
because when I was in there,

I just felt like I was in the lion's den, man.

- Wow.
- I felt like I was being lured in there.

So, yeah, you may have a
male and female or male juvenile.

But obviously, there's multiple
creatures from these tracks.

You know you've got
two different individuals.

For sure.

The most important thing is

it could be that what we're
looking at here is a family group.

Russell, this is a really, really great find.

But you guys, I want to take
you to where I was last night.

You are not gonna believe what I found.

It doesn't look like anything's

so whatever made
these didn't come back.

These are absolutely just gigantic.

These nests are intertwined together,

and they have green
fresh boughs on top of them

to make them comfortable,

like you would sleep at any hotel.

I was not expecting this.

Where's the third one?

That is huge.

It's like woven together.

This is what we ran into
right here in California

when we found two nests.

But now we're looking at three,

which would indicate

we're looking at three different creatures

on this mountain.

Tell me this wouldn't
be the Alpha position.

To me, this spells out like
some kind of family group

where you've got an Alpha watching
out for the other group members.

- And if we have a little one in a group...
- -Right.

It's usually going to nest with the mother.

That makes total sense.

This one particular site, there
actually was a cluster of nests.

Wow.

My kind of gut reaction to this situation

was that it was a birthing site.

The reason I think that
is there was one nest

that was in the crook of a bush

about two and a half feet off the ground.

When I saw it, the first
thing that came to mind was,

"my gosh, this is a bassinet."

When I look at the size of this thing,

I could fit two of me inside of this.

And just the way these
nests were situated together

leads me to believe that

this was more than
likely a family of big foot.

- Wow.
- Okay. Right here? Right at the edge?

Nine feet.

So for reference, I'm going to
label this one just Alpha nest...

- All right.
- And write down the measurements,

and we'll just go to all of them,

- get all that first...
- Yeah.

- And then we just start diving in.

We're at nine feet on this one.

- Wow.

Right at eight feet.

These other two nests

are measuring to be about
the same size as the first one,

which means there are at
least three creatures here.

And if this is a family grouping

with the mother sharing the nest,

then we could be looking
at possibly four big foot.

Seven and a half feet.

- Yeah.

Man, I'm almost seeing, like,
an impression in here, too.

Are you guys catching that?

If you really look at the composition of it,

you'd have to imagine that
something had to have been inside

in order to get this done
and matted down in this way.

Yeah, right.

Which is great for us

because we may be able
to find some DNA in there.

Yeah. Speaking of, what's the
best way to pull some of this DNA?

Let's split up because
there's three of them

and the weather is really coming in.

Yeah, it is.

First thing I want to do is use
the technology that we have

that will help to identify

our best chances of getting
a DNA signature here.

So if you guys want to
start working on the outside,

- by looking for any hair...
- Yeah.

Anything that looks
unusual that we can collect...

- And then we can really dive in.

With the next band of the storm

expected to hit land in less than an hour,

mireya must gather any evidence now,

before it washes away,

using a hyper spectral camera

that's equipped with technology

that processes data

across the entire
electromagnetic spectrum,

allowing it to detect
traces of animal DNA.

It's detected something right here,

so I'm gonna go ahead and set that.

That way we can keep that data,

and I'm going to collect
exactly from that spot.

It's going to give us our best chances

of getting any kind of DNA signature.

I'm trying to collect as much
evidence as we can while we still have it,

because I don't know what's going
to be left when this next storm hits.

The thing that made me want
to start doing field research

was a magazine article

that I read about the most
endangered primates in the world.

And it wasn't the ones with the beautiful
photographs that captured my attention.

It was actually the line drawings.

Because here they were
on the verge of extinction,

and they had never
even been photographed.

That really captured my attention.

I knew then and there that that was what

I was going to dedicate
the rest of my life to.

And for now, more than two decades,

I have been in search

of rare and elusive primates
on the verge of extinction

that have not even
ever been documented.

After the storm came through,

it made all of the roads
and trails impassable.

But we're not giving up.

Nothing here on prints
or anything. Anything that

no, just some turned up ferns.

Nature still has so many
more surprises for us, I think.

I remember so many times

during my previous expeditions

where I was out searching
for a rare elusive animal

that I'd been told over
and over I'd never find.

There were so many moments

where I could have just given up

because it seemed like a failure,

walking ten hours a day for months
on end and not seeing something.

But then you have that
breakthrough moment,

and that can only come

from Patience and perseverance.

After weeks of searching

for the suspected family of big foot,

the team gathers to speak to
an expert of forensic podiatry

about the three detailed prints

they collected near the nest site.

Dr. Emily, thank you so much for
taking the time to speak with us today.

First of all, can you tell us
a little bit about your work?

So I am a functional podiatrist

and a human movement specialist,

and I have a big interest

in the evolution of bipedal-ism.

Well, I know we sent you tracks

that we found out in the field.

Can you break down your process

of how you analyze a foot track?

What I did is I set them
down all on the floor,

and then I looked at
them from a distance

to see what kind of jumped out at me

from the shape, from the size,

from the detailing of the prints.

And then I went in deeper

and started taking actual measurements

of the size of the foot,
the breadth of the foot.

This is based off of forensic podiatry,

which is a division of podiatry

that uses footprints that
would be found at a crime scene

to then try to determine

height, weight, et cetera,
even gait pattern, of a suspect.

I got to ask you, Dr. Em,

this is probably the first time

anybody has come to you

with what might be a
big foot foot to analyze.

Did you see anything

that, you know, jumped out at you

as being different or strange?

Yeah, absolutely.

Thank you for sending them to me.

And what I want to share with you

is first with the smaller pair.

Just because those
were so well-articulated,

even the web space

and in between the ball of the foot

and where the digits
start to make an imprint

was so well defined.

I thought that they
would look more primate

and they actually looked
more homo sapiens.

Well, that's interesting.

Now, not evolved homo sapiens.

What I'm looking, just
based off of the assessment,

would be human-like.

In looking at our ancestral lineage,

we see in primates that they have

what sort of looks like
they still have a finger,

whereas in humans, we have a big toe.

What is it that you're
seeing in those prints?

Yeah, so that is actually one of
the biggest distinctions of what I saw

is this well-defined big
toe joint, you could say.

But what really stands
out around the prints

that makes them less
human-like is the breadth.

So the width of the
metatarsal area, so here,

this is going to be wider
than in homo sapiens foot,

and then down to the calcaneus.

It's interesting to hear that Dr. Emily feels

that this cast is similar to a human foot,

but there are key differences.

Because if this print
didn't come from a human,

then these differences
might provide real insight

into how an animal would
interact in this environment.

Are you able to determine
the ability of these things

to be able to travel long distances?

Based off of it being a human-like foot

means that it would be upright,

which inherently gives the
ability to walk longer distances.

Okay.

They have a wider foot that allows for

maybe more stability on forest floors,

rocks and branches, and things like that.

Got it.

So what's your takeaway
from these tracks?

So when I did the measurements,

there are well-accepted calculations

to find averages between
foot length and height.

What they found is that
there's a 15% correlation.

So I measured from
the center of the heel

to the middle of the big toe

to determine the foot length.

Take that and then
use that 15% calculation

to determine potential
height from this print.

We're dying to know what you get.

So from the smaller print,

the height is around 6'9 " to 7'0".

- Wow!
- Wow.

On the smaller pair.

- Wow.
- That's crazy.

So what are the calculations

on the height for the big print?

So the large print, which
was 42 centimeters,

"is an estimate of 9'0".

Wow.

So what we're dealing with then

would be something that is nine-foot tall

and then another one
that's six to seven-foot tall

walking around the forest upright,

- barefoot.
- Barefoot.

Wow. I'm amazed.

Hearing a seven-foot tall
and nine-foot tall creature

walking around just a stone's throw

If we think of size as being an indicator,

the fact that they're very well defined

makes me think that there is

more of an effortlessness
in the movement.

When we are younger, we move
more fascially, there's a lightness.

Think of like a toddler
that will never get tired.

And that's something that could suggest

that it was a younger
animal that made that imprint.

Fascinating.
