cities, the countryside, and suburbs

where Governor Dwey has his strongest

support are certain to go to the

Republicans. And the latest blow to the

president's hopes, Dr. Gallup has

announced he will cancel further polling

as he believes the outcome is already

certain.

Late returns show Democrats alienated by

Truman's policies returning to the fold

in surprising numbers. The president is

a million votes ahead in the popular

vote. Could it be the tide is turning?

Unbelievable if true. For the first time

since 1916,

the United States faces a country so

evenly divided in a national election

that no one knows. Hours and hours after

the polls have closed, who is to be the

next president of the United States,

Harry Truman has accomplished one of the

political miracles of our times. In the

face of national polls that were

universal in predicting his defeat, he

qualified than I to take up the

presidential task. But the work was mine

to do, and I had to do it. I did

everything within my power and always I

knew I was not alone. You were working
