Planet Action starts now
so get ready and get set for your favorite action stars to go!go!go!
Coming up... we dine in hell with Gerard Butler and the 300
we find out how Brad Pitt stays in the game
and we learn what it takes to be a stuntman
But first
we dive into the world of folklore
پلنت اکشن
It's time to present our top 3 mythological movies
We kick things off with ‘Thor
Perhaps not the first film in this category that springs to mind as it’s more of a superhero flick
But the character indeed stems from Norse mythology and was invented long before the late Stan Lee turned him into an Avenger
The same goes for folks like Odin, Loki and Sif
places such as Asgard, events like Ragnarok and even Thor’s weapon of choice Mjolnir
In the films Thor is portrayed by Chris Hemsworth
who turned him into quite a cocky guy
Thor was actually is...
you know, He certainly believes he is doing the right thing.
For the Kingdom and the universe
He thinks his old man, or his father
is slipping and is not quite equipped to rule things
So he has taken it upon himself to throw himself into it head first
I have defended the Kingdom of Asgard
and all the lives of the innocent across the nine realms
Our second favorite mythological movie has got to be ‘Troy’
The classical tale itself is still relevant today
as we all know things like a Trojan Horse and an Achilles’ heel
Both the movie and the original poem, ‘The Iliad’ by Homer, focus on a massive war between the Spartans and the Trojans
In it fight the two greatest warriors the world has ever known
between Hector and Achilles
The film is as epic as it gets, featuring massive battle scenes
And The reason ’Troy’ ended up so high on our list is because it shows, what’s in our opinion
the coolest combat sequence ever
The intimate but thrilling fight between Achilles of Sparta and Hector of Troy.
action!
And that brings us to today’s winner; ‘300
Where in ’Troy’ the Spartans were the villains, in this movie they’re the good guys
300’ has incredibly well directed fight scenes that alternates extreme slow motion with very fast paced sword fights
Unlike ‘Thor’ and ’Troy’ this one is actually based on true events
namely the Battle of Thermopylae
Sure some things were changed for dramatic purposes, but the story is at least a little bit historically accurate
It’s a classic underdog tale, but executed to perfection
Not to mention that in terms of dialogue
the whole flick is basically one big one-liner!
This, is where we fight!
This is where they die
پلنت اکشن
Of all mythological movies, 300 is one of the best
It's visually stunning, its action packed with epic fight scenes that are just thrilling to watch
Let’s get into the CGI altered world of ‘300’!
پلنت اکشن
This is where we hold them
This is where we fight!
And that would be Icestorm Studios in Montreal,
where most of the classic action hit ‘300’ was shot.
This over the top testosterone driven spectacle is based on the comic books by Frank Miller
who you might know from ‘Sin City
Believe it or not but the plot is actually based on a true story
Sure, it’s fictionalised and there’s plenty of drama added
but a small group of Spartans did stand against the entire Persian army and give them a tough time
Also most of the iconic lines find their origins in authentic Spartan culture
This is where they die
Arm your shield boys!
The Spartans in the film are as cool as it gets, with every single character totally badass
And this too is historically accurate
The reason the ancient culture eventually fell is only because they refused to adapt to a changing world
For example they chose not to use coin money, as they didn’t believe in it.
In doing so, though, they could no longer trade with other nations
Also, they treated outsiders as harshly as they did themselves
resulting in way too many enemies.
Remember this day men
for it will be yours for all time
Okay you can calm down now your highness, they get the picture
300’ is directed by Zack Snyder
while Gerard Butler plays the heroic King Leonidas
Almost everything was shot using blue screens, so for the actors it was never fully clear what the final film would look like
so for the actors it was never fully clear what the final film would look like
I always had a lot of faith in Zack and the team
And the whole way through all I heard were great things
And that worries me because you’ll only be set up for disappointment
and I was very nervous when I went to watch the film
And I was ten times happier with it than I expected to be
Even though the entire film is set outdoors, it was all filmed on sound stages with a whole lot of CGI.
In fact, so much of the film was computer generated, things got a bit confusing sometimes
But it did have some perks
It’s not like hurry up, the sun is setting,It’s windy
It’s really, you know, it becomes this really sort of exposed performance But on the other hand
I think they relied a lot just as you would on the stage you know,
your reality is created by the other actors who’s giving you the performance back
That’s how I sort of felt, and I think that they really… they did that
When you’re acting on the blue screen
it reminded me of when I was a kid and I was just improvising and pretending I was a knight or a warrior or whatever.
It’s freeing in a way because you have to use your imagination
Seldom has a movie had so little plot, yet been so that much fun to watch
It’s all about the action, and it doesn’t bore for a second
In fact, with a body count of no less than 600, it’s the third deadliest film of all time.
The reason it works so well is the way Snyder shot the combat sequences
using slow motion movement alternating with actual speed
add some desaturated colours and a splash of humor
and you get a masterpiece that raked in almost half a billion dollars
Also, if you ever need some motivation to hit the gym, just throw on ‘300’

After his epic portrayal of King Leonidas in ‘300’
Hollywood welcomed Gerard Butler with open arms
and it was not long before he was starring in a variety of blockbusters alongside the creme de la creme of the movie industry
Let's get to know Gerard Butler a little more
up next
پلنت اکشن
After being fired from his internship at a law firm
Scottish star Gerard Butler decided to take the opportunity to follow his dream of being an actor
Early roles came in the James Bond film 'Tomorrow Never Dies'
and the ‘Tomb Raider' franchise, sparking a lifelong love of action flicks
I come away with more of a punch from the action
You know… they're movies I finish and I'm like
Wow, that was crazy
to be a part of that and to be leading that is very cool
In 2006, Gerard's action hero persona reached its peak when he starred in '300'
The movie tells the amazing true story of 300 Spartans and their battle against an army of over one million Persians
The film and its characters were based on Frank Miller's graphic novel
I have come across a couple of characters like this before, that I've had to play
But then we're dealing with a graphic novel
. We're also dealing with
a hero that is like no other hero I've come across in terms of focus and strength and actual insanity
But macho action isn't the only string to Butler's bow
In the 2007 romantic drama 'P.S. I Love You'
he was required to sing and dance for the part of Gerry
The singing was fun
It just took a lot of work to try and you know be able to sing and remember the notes, because I don't play the guitar
the dancing was fun for the first ten minutes but after a day and a half
it was getting pretty tired to try and keep it amusing you know
because it takes a long time to do these scenes
In 2008 he hit the big screen in the Guy Ritchie directed action crime thriller 'RockNRolla’
which, oddly, required him to put his dancing shoes back on
I don't think I'll ever make it onto 'Dancing With The Stars' that's for sure
But um…
I think I went from bad to worse
In the 2009 sci-fi thriller 'Gamer', Gerard was back in his action star element, and this time his co-star Michael C. Hall did all the dancing for him
It was what allowed me to take the role in the first place, was that I didn't have to dance and that he did
Um…
and he did a far better job than me, I have to say.
2012’s 'Playing For Keeps' wasn't simply another rom-com for him, though, as Gerard handpicked director Gabriele Muccino.
I pitched this story to him
and said this is what we could do and got him all excited about it and then was involved with a lot of the writing and developing of it so
you know, yeah it's more your
it's more your baby
There was also another round of butt kicking in the 'Olympus Has Fallen' action series
When you're following me through the building, you're there with me making those decisions
you know scoping out the joint, assessing the enemy, trying to establish communication
messing with the bad guy you know, moving by stealth
You're in the middle of all of that."
And if you’re looking for a heist thriller, with some twists you won’t see coming, and Butler as a macho gorilla of a detective, try 2018’s ‘Den of Thieves’.
I was actually looking at my notes last night, remembering notes I made on the character
and it said: Speak to props and have nuts, donuts, pick and mix, everything
He’s always gotta be something in his mouth, eating.
Of course, he then had to shed that extra weight for his next flick
the submarine adventure ‘Hunter Killer’
I put on 30 pounds, and had to train so hard to get there that when I finish, I just, I quit
And that’s stupid, ‘cause I should keep training, but just, Lord, but sometimes I’m just like, I can’t even think of a gym
And in 2019, he closed out his kid friendly trilogy with ‘How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World’
I feel like these movies have all, they’ve been brave
they’ve really taken on some interesting themes and myths, and each one, I think, has outdone the one before
Tense action hero, charming rom com hunk and self-professed dodgy dancer
Gerard Butler's movies have now grossed well over $3 billion dollars
"I just wanna keep working, producing movies, working as an actor, getting better
and then maybe one day I'll direct I don't know.Maybe one day I'll quit
Sometimes I just think I wanna go off and do something completely different or just disappear for a couple of years
So, you know, you ask me that on a different day I'll give you a different answer
پلنت اکشن
Gerard Butler is known for being a hard-talking, hard-kicking action hero
but what you might not know is that he's used a stunts double in most of his movies, including ‘300
Although the job might sound pretty cool, it takes years of training
Here's what it takes to join the elite squad of stuntmen and women
Earlier on in the episode we already saw the 2004 film ‘Troy’ in our top three mythological movies
It stars Brad Pitt as the hero Achilles
However, unlike Gerard Butler
Brad Pitt didn’t use a stuntman and preferred to do the action scenes himself
ironically tearing his achilles tendon in the process
It's this kind of dedication to his roles that turned him in the superstar that he is
Let’s get to know more about this living legend
پلنت اکشن
Born in a small town in Oklahoma, Brad Pitt dropped out of college just weeks before graduation to try his luck as an actor in LA
His good looks soon got him noticed
and although it might seem like Pitt was in just about every movie going in the 90s
he was actually careful to choose only the best projects available
Films are exhausting. It‘s six months of your life and
it’s usually at least twelve hours a day maybe twenty four hours a day, somewhere in there
And so it better be something that you're interested in for one
and people that you appreciate and respect two
and something that you think that will stick around
Among his early hits, Brad starred in two films by director David Fincher
the dark thriller 'Se7en
and the cult classic 'Fight Club’, in which Pitt’s chemistry with co-star Edward Norton was immediately apparent
I was instantly attracted
to the idea of
being lovers
Another big success for Brad was the 'Oceans' franchise from director Steven Soderbergh
in which he could really show off his laidback star quality
Listen, it didn't feel like work
You know it's just a bunch of friends hanging out
You know I'm sure Steven would tell you differently because he was also shooting it, and then editing at night
But for us it was just about hanging out and having a good time. And that was the spirit of the movie
After Fincher and Soderbergh, Brad ticked another acclaimed director off his bucket list
working with Quentin Tarantino on 'Inglourious Basterds
We talked about back-story, we talked about movies into the wee hours of the night
and I got up the next morning
and I saw five empty bottles of wine laying on the floor
Five!
And apparently I agreed to do the movie because six weeks late
I was in uniform and I was Lieutenant Aldo Raine
so go figure
In 2011 he starred in the baseball drama 'Moneyball’, and received Oscar nominations as both actor and producer
I know very little about baseball, I'm not a baseball fanatic by any means
But it was about what these guys took on at that time, about trying to survive in an unfair game
How can you be competitive when you have a tenth of the payroll as the big league teams and they're buying all of the talent?
Then the star finally won his first Academy Award for producing director Steve McQueen’s racial drama 'Twelve Years A Slave’
when the film was named 2013’s Best Picture
He asked the question, why are there not more films about American slavery.
I wanna do a film about American slavery.
And it was
a mind boggling question, why aren't there? That's exactly the right question.
After he finally wed his longtime partner Angelina Jolie in 2014
in lieu of a honeymoon, the couple elected to make ‘By the Sea’
their first movie together since meeting on the set of 'Mr. & Mrs. Smith
I mean, it’s really no different than trying to get the kids’ breakfast ready or, you know, it’s a constant tag team with us
and it was really nice to be back on set and to make something that she wrote
and you know I felt,
I don’t know, there was something really moving for me to do that
And nice to be on set and just making a film together again
Sadly, however, the pair split up in September of the following year
Since then, Brad has focused more on his career as a producer
but that just makes it an even bigger event when he returns to the screen
like when he re-teamed with Tarantino
for ’Once Upon A Time In… Hollywood’, opposite Leonardo DiCaprio.
It’s that thing of knowing you got the best of the best on the opposite side of the table
holding up the scene with you, and there’s a great relief in that
As Leo said, we have the same reference points, we kinda came on at the same time, we’ve been going through this at the same time
have similar experiences to laugh about
And I hope we get to do it again. It was great fun
Academy Award winner, world famous sex symbol and all-round modern day movie icon, there will never be another celebrity quite like Brad Pitt
I love movies!
When I was a little kid movies were everything to me

You know what Gerard Butler and Brad Pitt have in common?
Abs!
These stars had to endure crazy workouts with the help of their personal trainers in preparation for their roles
Let’s find out how important having one of these trainers is for any self-respecting actor
پلنت اکشن
Being an A-list movie star and being in the best shape possible often go hand in hand
In fact, for most of them it’s just part of their job
When your contract hinges on fitting into a certain costume
or being able to run, jump and dance while you sing
there isn’t much choice when it comes to staying fit
But most celebrities don’t have a background in exercise science or fitness programming
And While it is possible to head to the gym without a plan and still have a great workout
it’s a lot easier when someone is telling you what to do
For instance, take Swedish beauty Alicia Vikander
who really had to work hard and pack on ten pounds of muscle for the role of Lara Croft.
She had help from personal trainer Magnus Lygdback,
a Swedish health and wellness expert who’s worked with the likes of Ben Affleck
Gal Gadot, and Harry Styles, to name just a few
Four months before filming I joined her in London
that’s when we started working out a lot. And a lot heavier.
I don’t want to call it the bulk up phase, it was more a buildup phase
She got to eat a lot of food. Good food, but a lot of food
And Two months before filming we did the cutting cycle
with more high intensity training and obviously a diet
Yep, food matters too
Abs are made in the kitchen
and this is just as true for celebrities as it is for you and me
While there’s no best way to eat, and healthy can mean different things for different people
many celebs have found that sticking to a special diet is the key to their success
So find out which foods are healthiest for you and in which proportions
Remember the ripped body Matthew McConaughey showed off in ‘Magic Mike among other films?
Well, that’s the work of a super specific diet
and of course a little help from trainer to the stars Gunnar Peterson!
Matthew travels a lot
lives in Malibu
One of the hardest workers I’ve ever seen
Comes in and crushes it
And sticks to a diet like a pro body builder
Whatever he has to eat, whenever he has to eat, he’s on it.
And he does not mess up
Not only can hiring a personal trainer take a lot of the guesswork out of what to actually do when you get to the gym
it can help with motivation as well
One such motivator is Ramona Braganza
who’s trained the likes of Jessica Alba, Scarlett Johansson and Blake Lively
They wake up every day and I have to motivate them to exercise and
you know, eating well is a struggle, but you know they have a lot of motivation
So when you know you have to get on the screen in front of a lot of people
and there's the paparazzi waiting outside your doors, you pretty much put in effort.
It’s clear celebrities know the secret to fitness that the rest of us don’t know, or don’t like to admit
it takes dedication, time management, sacrifice
And, of course, some help from a personal trainer
پلنت اکشن
It's a wrap for Planet Action
, but we’ve got plenty more explosions, stunts and spectacular blockbusters again next time!
See you then!
