Boyd:We found the first tape on the kitchen
counter, and the place was a mess.
I remember the smell.
The food was just putrid, like it had been
there for months, but the coroner's report said
that the bodies had been dead only seven days.
There were two of them, covered in sheets,
several feet apart.
Around them was a set of bloody foot prints.
We did forensic analysis of those,
and they came back to Father Patrick.
About a mile from the house we found a car right over here.
When we ran the plates they came
back to Father Isaac Hitchens.
He was a close associate of Patrick's.
Right over here were three sets of footprints.
One set belonging to Sydney Irons, another
to Father Patrick and a third belonging
to CPS worker Jennifer Borman.
[running water]
Closer to me right here there were two sets of prints.
It looked like they came later to the scene.
We did analysis of those and it came back to CPS
workers David McCracken and Josh Riedford.
We couldn't find any trace evidence or forensic
evidence at all of Father Hitchens.
When we did a directional analysis of all the prints
they all led one way, that way, towards the lake.
Thanks to the surface level receding, the second
of two tapes was found just a few weeks ago
right over there still preserved inside the camera.
The first tape left a lot of questions unanswered.
And unfortunately, even after three years
the second one just raises more.
Anyway, that's it.
Jennifer:Your favorite.
Elliot:Well, how much do I owe you for this?
Jennifer:Don't worry about it. Put it on your tab.
Elliot:Well, let me know when we get to six figures.
Jennifer:I probably already own your house.
David:All right. We're rolling Jen.
Jennifer:This is case number 0935085058,
concerning Susan Elroy, age 14.
We're speaking with Principal Elliot West at
Daylight Junior and Senior High School.
Interviewer is Jennifer Borman.
So, if you wouldn't mind just take it from the top.
Elliot:Well, Susan has always had it tough
because her mother's not around very much.
This was the first year that I actually had
seen it begin to have some negative consequences.
Jennifer:In what way is that?
Elliot:Well, talking back to teachers, dressing provocatively.
Once I even had to remove her from the boy's
bathroom where she was traumatizing another student.
It was only when we discovered this,
it all started to make some sense.
Jennifer:Its the journal that you found, right?
Elliot:No, Father Patrick brought it to me.
Jennifer:Isn't Susan a little old
to be going to his after-school program?
Elliot:She helps him out.
The monastery is understaffed so
it's a prid-quo-pro situation.
The school gets an after-school program, and
the students get volunteer hours for helping Patrick out.
Anyway, when Patrick showed this to me it set off all
the usual red flags and I called you immediately.
Jennifer:Would you mind reading the entry for me?
Elliot:"November 2nd.
"Brushed my teeth.
"When I came back to my room they were there again.
"Let them put their hands on me.
"Why would they do that?"
The rest is just illustrations.
That's the only written entry in the journal.
Jennifer:Can I see it?
And did you talk to Susan about this?
Elliot:She sidestepped all my questions.
Jennifer:And what about her mother?
[pages turning]
Kris?
Elliot:We had a meeting, with Officer Boyd, Patrick,
and Julie Pyle, the Speech Team Coach.
We told Kris the situation and Officer Boyd spoke with
Susan alone, but Susan adamantly defended
her mother and insisted on going home with her.
Jennifer:Can I have Kris' address?
Elliot:Sure.
Officer Boyd told Kris that you would need to speak with her
and she had her sign the consent form that you faxed over.
Jennifer:I need to get going.
I need to catch Father Patrick
before he leaves Saint Odilia's.
Thank you so much Elliot.
Elliot:Of course.
Jennifer:From Elliot's office.
Patrick:You giving him more of that coffee he likes?
Jennifer:Of course!
I want to talk to you about Susan's journal.
Patrick:Its a shame we always have
to meet under these circumstances.
Jennifer:It is the area where both of our jobs intersect.
Have you asked Susan about the entry?
Patrick:Oh, I asked, but as soon as I did,
she made some crass remarks and laughed
and just said she made it all up.
Jennifer:Do you think she made it up?
Patrick:Its not like her to do something like that.
I mean this is a girl who used to
work with me on a single drawing for
months at a time when she was younger.
Oh, she loved to draw.
Jennifer:How did you end up with
her journal in the first place?
Patrick:I have all the kids write them.
Then they have to turn them in to me so I can
make sure they're actually doing something.
Susan works with me, but I always have her write one too.
I thought it'd be good for her.
Jennifer:Why is that?
Patrick:She's had it pretty rough.
Writing's good therapy.
Jennifer:How has she had it rough?
Patrick:Her parents' divorce was
a public spectacle around here.
Dan, her father, was a drunk, pulled all kinds of awful
stunts like throwing wall insulation in with the wash,
I mean what kind of man does something like that?
Anyway, after the divorce he
pulled up stakes and moved away.
No one was really too upset about it except for Susan.
Jennifer:Do you know where he went?
Patrick:No clue.
Jennifer:So you spend a lot of time with Susan?
Patrick:Well, I see her almost every day.
I'm actually the one who drives her home
when the after-school program ends.
Her mom works a lot.
Jennifer:Okay, well, we'll be in touch.
[buzzing]
Hello?
Jennifer Borman.
[loud knocking]
Josh:Hello?
Meghan and Pete Olyphant, this is Josh
Riedford with Child Protective Services.
[knocking loudly]
We're here to talk about Russell.
Courtney:They're in there.
They are in there.
Jennifer:Are you the one that made the call?
Josh:Hello?!
[inaudible female yelling from inside]
Courtney:I told you there were in there.
Josh:Look if you don't open the door,
Boyd:Meghan, this is Officer Boyd.
Open this door in three seconds or I'll do it myself.
Seth:This is my building, Rick, you're not,
[loud crash from inside]
[scream from inside]
Courtney:I told you so.
[crashing of door]
[rapid footsteps]
[scream]
Meghan:This is a private residence.
Boyd:Meghan get out of the way.
Josh:Russell?!
Jennifer:Josh, wait!
Meghan:Get off of me, this is [unintelligible].
[overlapping arguing]
Josh:I need help in here!
Pete, we're here to help!
[Russell yells wordlessly and repeatedly]
[overlapping arguing continues]
Pete:He needs us!
Meghan:[Mommy's here baby!]
Boyd:Seth, get him out of here.
Pete:He needs us!
[Russell growling]
[thump]
[Jennifer screams]
[Russell screaming]
[buzzing static]
Seth:Jen, are you okay?
David:Josh, do you want me to tell her you like her?
Josh:No, I really rather we not get into all that here.
David:All right, then all we've got to do
is go in there and film the rabies bite.
That's it.
Its not every day your boss gets
bitten by a rabid kid, right?
Josh:You mean Russell?
David:Yeah.
Josh:Yeah David, I was there when it happened.
I don't think I really want to relive it.
David:I know you saw it happen but you didn't see the bite.
This is our chance to see the bite.
Josh:I don't really want to and
I don't think anybody else does.
I mean I don't understand why you've got to film everything.
David:Because, why not?
I mean if everybody was like me we'd
have irrefutable proof of Sasquatch.
Josh:If everybody was like you,
nobody would get anything done.
David:Yeah, they'd film everything
and then you'd be able to.
Josh:Yeah, a lot of good that would do.
David:Yeah, well, whatever.
Josh:You know David, she's going to know what we're doing.
I mean its very obvious that that's a camera.
David:Okay look, its obvious if you look at it right there.
If you look at it head on.
Josh:Yeah.
David:But its not.
It'll be low, and you'll never even tell.
Josh:Yeah and the big green lunchbox doesn't
just scream "Hey, I'm up to something."
David:It screams "I'm hungry."
Josh:This is so stupid.
So, just checking out the big boss man's house.
David:Hey Jen.
Jennifer:I knew I should have locked all the doors.
David:Wouldn't have done any good.
Josh:Dave can pick locks.
[chuckles]
Jeniffer:Shut up.
Josh:Oh man, are those brownies?
Why don't you ever bring those to the office?
I mean, don't you love me and Dave?
Hey Kitty.
David:So, do you have any kids we don't know about?
Jennifer:What?!
That's me and my mom.
Josh:No, the drawing.
Jennifer:Oh, that's a Jennifer Borman original.
Josh:Huh, you do that recently?
Jennifer:Yeah, I just framed it yesterday.
Dave:Well, it beats the hell out of my finger paintings.
[buzzing and clicking]
Jennifer:I've seen your crappy sketches.
Josh:Mmm, cookies!
Jennifer:My mom always used to bake for me
whenever I got hurt and, you know, thanks to
this rabies bite, I get a batch of guilt-free brownies.
Dave:You want to bet?
Josh:No, come on!
Dave:Yeah, come on.
Jennifer:Bet with what?
You can't even pay off your student loans.
David:I'll just get them deferred until school ends.
Josh:Look, Jen, you don't have to do this.
David:Yeah you do.
Jennifer:All right, how much?
David:Hmm twenty bucks.
Its twenty bucks, its not that bad.
Jennifer:All right, hotshot.
David:All right.
Lets go.
You first.
Jennifer:No way.
Josh:Why don't you just do it over the brownie mix?
David:No, we need those.
You afraid?
Jennifer:No, I'm just, I'm pretty sure
that you already owe me twenty dollars.
David:All right Josh, come on.
Get over here Jen.
Josh:Jen, you know if you take that
off its not going to heal, right?
Jennifer:What's the matter Joshie,
you scared of a little blood and pus?
Josh:No, jeez, I just don't want
it to get infected or anything.
Jennifer:All right, you asked for it.
David:Why don't you just point it
to the lunch box right there.
Josh:Oh God, I'm not even going to look.
Oh Shit!
David:Assess the wound.
Josh:God, Oh!
Jennifer:Why are you carrying that bag around?
[static]
Josh:Its got my lunch in it.
Me and Dave both.
David:Just stay away from Josh's lunch, I'm warning you!
Jennifer:Is that the camera?!
David:Run!!
Josh:No.
[static]
[unintelligible]
[static]
Jennifer:Hi Susan.
I'm Jennifer.
Why don't you just have a seat?
Do you know why I'm here?
Susan:Probably because of that shit I wrote in my journal.
Jennifer:Yeah.
Susan:Who are you?
Jennifer:That's David.
Susan:I didn't ask you.
Bitch.
Jennifer:David's here to record, not talk.
Susan:Oh, I'd let you record us David.
Jennifer:Susan.
Susan:All night long.
Or you can just watch us two girls, huh?
Jennifer:Susan!
If you can't handle a boy in the room, then he can leave.
Susan:Jesus, how do you work with this fucking lady?
Jennifer:I have some questions I need to ask you.
Susan:Of course you do.
Jennifer:Why don't you just start
with why you wrote what you did.
I have all day.
Susan:Father Patrick made me write in that
fucking journal every day, just like the rest of those
stupid brats I'm supposed to help him babysit.
Like I'm no different from them.
Like I'm the fucking five-year-old.
Do I look five to you?
Jennifer:Why didn't you write
anything earlier on in the year?
Why did you write that in particular?
Susan:I don't even remember what I wrote.
Jennifer:I have your journal.
[papers hitting the floor]
[paper rustling]
"November 2nd.
"Brushed my teeth."
"When I came back into the room, they were there.
"Let them put their hands on me
[paper rustling]
Susan:Well what would you have written?
What would get you hard?
Jennifer:You wrote "they" a lot.
Who are "They"?
Susan:Jesus, they aren't anyone.
Can you tell me you never fantasized
about taking on two guys, Jennifer?
Jennifer:David, I think we're just going to tripod this.
Probably David here and his camera?
And getting a friend?
Are you and David fucking?
Jennifer:You're 14 years old.
You're too young to be acting like this.
Susan:Like what?
Jennifer:You know that, right?
Susan:Who are you to say how anyone should act at any age?
What the fuck do you know?
Jennifer:I know that you were looking
for a reaction whenever you wrote about
people putting their hands on you.
Especially since it was the only
thing you'd written all year.
Susan:Exactly.
I was looking for a reaction.
And here you are.
Jennifer:How's your relationship with your mother?
Susan:Really?
No Jennifer, my mother isn't
fucking me with one of her friends.
Jennifer:All I did was ask a simple question.
Susan:And all I'm doing is telling you
to leave my mother the fuck alone.
Jennifer:Look, you drug her into this when
you insinuated that you were being abused.
Its not your fault.
Susan:Fuck off, seriously.
My mom isn't a bad person.
Jennifer:Okay, then give me someone else to look into.
Who is the bad guy?
When was the last time you saw your dad?
Susan, has he stopped by since he and your mom split up?
Susan:If you don't let me out I'm going
to claw your fucking eyes out, bitch!
Jennifer:Okay, we don't have to talk about your dad.
Susan:Lets fucking talk about your dad then.
Jennifer:Look, your legs are covered in scratches,
it looks like you're being forced to do
something that you don't want to do.
What am I supposed to think?
Susan:Think whatever the fuck you want.
Jennifer:I'm going through your backpack.
Susan:Fuck you!
Jennifer:Your mother gave me permission
to go through your stuff.
Susan:Fuck you, bitch!
God damn it.
Motherfucking cunt!
Bullshit!
[paper rustling]
Jennifer:What is this?
Susan:Turn that god damn video camera off!
[thump]
[static]
Elliot:Stop.
Susan:You can't listen to a fucking word she says.
She's going to lead you on.
[heavy background noise]
Jennifer:Thoroughly abusive.
I didn't gain any information from,
[stuttering sound]
Elliot:Why did you get upset when she pulled it out?
Jennifer:She came at me.
Susan:I didn't touch you.
Elliot:Then why are you so interested in getting it back?
Susan:I don't know.
It was Cami, she wrote it.
Elliot:Why would Cami write this?
Susan:She wrote the fucking note and put it in my backpack.
Elliot:But why would she?
Susan:Because she hates me, she's a fuck.
[girls arguing unintelligibly]
Julie:Cami, get to class, go!
[slam]
Cami:Stay away from my boyfriend, you skank!
[muted yelling inside]
Don't tell me what to do.
[phone ringing]
Jennifer:You know, after you left, all I did was
ask her about her dad, and she completely lost it.
David:Well, maybe she'd like you
if you weren't all business.
I'm just saying that these kids have
been through a traumatic experience.
The last thing they need is you grilling them like that.
Jennifer:When you graduate, you can handle them
however you want, but I'm not trying to make friends.
David:They're not criminals.
Jennifer:It is for her own good.
If I hadn't went through her stuff,
I never would have found the note.
David:Okay, but don't be surprised if
you keep getting stonewalled like today.
Jennifer:You know, this week has just sucked.
David:Is Russell still getting to you?
Jennifer:Yeah, I mean every time I start to
forget about him, this lovely bite flares up.
David:It'll heal though, right?
Jennifer:Doctor Crichton says I'll have a scar.
You know it's for the best.
You don't want to lose a kid this early in your career.
David:If you think about it, it wasn't really your kid.
It was Josh's case, so you're still batting a hundred.
Jennifer:That doesn't matter.
I mean, I met him so he's as much mine as anyone's.
Susan:Give me a call when you
get tired of fucking this heifer.
Elliot:I'm telling you, there is no Gabe at this school.
Jennifer:And what about Michael?
Elliot:The only Michael we have is in seventh grade.
Jennifer:You're sure?
Elliot:Every student is in here.
Julie:Can we at least consider that Susan wrote it herself?
I mean, she is a proven liar.
Jennifer:How is she a proven liar?
Julie:I catch her in lies all the time.
She's the girl that cried wolf.
Jennifer:Is that her handwriting?
This is all we have to go on until we
locate where her father went off to.
But even liars don't deserve to be molested.
Julie:Then why don't you get Father
Patrick to snoop around for you?
After all, he has an excellent track
record at spotting abuse cases.
Elliot:Julie.
Jennifer:I've already spoken with Father Patrick.
Julie:And?
Elliot:Enough, Julie, let her do her job.
Julie:I wouldn't be doing mine
if I didn't at least being it up.
I mean, you do know that she's with
him practically every day, right?
Elliot:The girl has no one to go home to.
If it weren't for him, God knows where she'd be.
Look, Patrick genuinely cares for her.
Are you going to hold that against him?
Julie:Yup, I will if he's got some other motive.
Elliot:And what motive would that be?
Julie:Oh are you serious?
Look, Elliot, I'm not the only one who thinks this, okay,
I mean, you would have to have your head
completely buried in the sand not to have heard
the allegations that are flying around here.
Elliot:Enlighten me.
Julie:Come on.
Elliot:Look, you have CPS's ear on this.
This is your chance to send a criminal to jail.
Julie:Fine.
Jim Cheever, Helen Zimmer, Chris DiNono, Amy Chandler,
Elliot:"Don't wear panties to school tomorrow,"
Julie:These are teachers here, Elliot,
and all of them, all of them have had students,
Elliot:"Don't wear panties to school tomorrow,
Julie:who's parents have just magically become abusive
thanks to the great Father Patrick.
Elliot:"Me and Gabe are gonna fuck your brains out again.
"Lots of love.
"Mikey."
I have known Patrick for 20 years.
If you're going to accuse him of writing that note,
you'd better have some strong evidence backing it up.
Jennifer:Rest assured, I'm looking into every possibility.
I would like to come back as soon as possible
and speak to some of Susan's friends.
Elliot:Julie and I will draw up a list.
I'll have the parents sign the consent forms tomorrow.
Jennifer:Great, thank you.
Jennifer:Name for the camera?
Cami:Cami Gilman. G-I-L-M-A-N.
Jennifer:And how old are you, Cami?
Cami:14.
Jennifer:And you know Susan Ellroy?
Cami:Yeah, she's a fucking cunt.
Did you not see that bitch yesterday?
Jennifer:How long have you known her?
Cami:She's insane.
I mean if Pyles wouldn't have pulled me
out of the office, I'd have cut her.
Jennifer:Cami, how long have you know Susan?
Cami:Uh, I don't know.
Jennifer:Have you noticed any changes in her behavior?
Cami:What, she got her period or something?
Was she really excited about that?
Jennifer:No, I mean more like the pattern of her behavior.
Cami:What is this for?
Jennifer:I'm sorry, that's confidential.
Have you noticed any changes in the pattern of her behavior?
Cami:She's crazy
What else is there to say?
Jennifer:Does she hang around with any guys,
maybe, that are new, that you've never seen before?
Cami:She says she gets with all these guys,
but I've never seen her with anybody.
I mean she makes up all these crazy stories,
David:Do you know anybody named Mike or Gabe?
Cami:and nobody believes her because she's so,
David:Excuse me, do you know anybody named Mike or Gabe.
Cami:Uh, no.
But she did hit on my boyfriend once, Colin.
Yeah, he totally blew her off, though.
Jennifer:All right, thank you so much Cami.
I think we've got all we need.
Appreciate your time.
Cami:Yeah, fuck you Susan.
Jennifer:Wow.
Colin:Colin Sullivan.
David:And what's your relationship to Susan Ellroy?
Colin:Who fucking said I had a relationship with her?
I barely even talk to her, ever.
David:You came up in a conversation about her and Cami.
Colin:Oh.
David:Oh, what?
Colin:Nothing, I.
David:What?
Colin:I just, I hit on Susan in front of Cami.
David:Why did you do that?
Colin:Because, Cami was being a bitch.
I don't know.
It was forever ago.
David:Define "forever ago".
Colin:Hmm, couple weeks, why?
David:What did you do?
Colin:I don't know, dude.
What does it matter?
David:They got in a fight.
Colin:Well I'm not surpised.
They're both batshit crazy.
David:So you never went out with Susan,
or saw her outside of school?
Colin:Fuck no.
She's spicy, but I don't need the baggage.
David:Do you know any Gabe's or Mike's?
Colin:I know a lot of people.
David:Around here?
Colin:The only Gabe I know is in Canada and
Mike's mostly from my old school in Norwich.
David:Mostly?
Colin:Well there is one around here.
David:Your age?
Colin:Yeah.
David:Where is he?
Colin:Not too far.
David:Last name?
Colin:Ah, Hunt.
David:Okay, Mike Hunt.
What's the address?
[laughing]
David:I don't get it.
Jennifer:Can you state your name for the camera?
Amber:Amber Irons.
Jennifer:And how old are you?
Amber:18.
Jennifer:Do you know Susan Ellroy?
Amber:Yeah.
Jennifer:How well would you say you know her?
Amber:We used to be pretty good friends,
but we don't really hang out anymore.
Jennifer:Have you noticed a change in her behavior.
Amber:Not really, but I don't see her very often.
Jennifer:How about any new guys
hanging out around the school?
Possibly a Mike or a Gabe?
Amber:Not that I know of.
Jennifer:All right, well, thank you so much.
Amber:Um, in case I do see anything,
how would I get a hold of you?
Jennifer:I have a card.
Hang on.
Here you go.
Amber:Thank you.
[buzz]
Jennifer:Can you state your name for us?
Kris:Kris Ellroy.
I'm Susan's mom.
Jennifer:And doctor Crichton told
you the wounds were self-inflicted?
Kris:This morning.
Jennifer:Okay.
If we're going to help Susan, we need
to know who she hangs out with.
Who are her friends.
Kris:Look, I work.
I don't know.
I already told you I don't know a Mike or Gabe.
Jennifer:You're divorced from Susan's father, right?
When was the last time you saw him?
Kris:Susan said he came by about a month ago.
Jennifer:You weren't here?
Jennifer:Do you think he could be the one hurting her?
Kris?
Has it happened before?
Kris:I found Dan in her room one night.
[sigh]
Susan got stung by a hornet.
It must have clung to the inside of her
pants when she was swimming or something.
I didn't know.
She came running, crying.
I picked her up, hugged her, tried to calm her down.
The whole time that thing's in there, buzzing around.
Stinging her.
They don't die once they get you, not like bees.
I went out to get her ice cream, make her feel better.
He said he was kissing her hornet stings.
And then he said something like,
"what a terrible thing to happen".
That was almost worse.
Like he'd done nothing.
Jennifer:How long do you think it had been going on for?
Kris:I can tell you it didn't happen again.
Dan didn't put up much of a fight
when I told him I wanted a divorce.
Jennifer:How did Susan handle it?
Kris:He can do no wrong.
One time I did bring it up she said something like,
how stupid I'd been not to have sting cream in the house.
Jennifer:Do you know where we can find him?
Kris:He has a sister Kim Friedman, in Michigan.
She's all he had left.
Look, how much longer is this going to take?
I've got to be to work at five.
Jennifer:We've got all we need.
Thank you Kris.
David:So folks in Michigan have
no idea how to use the fax machine.
Josh:Yeah.
David:I've been here for three hours, and nothing.
Nothing about Susan's dad.
They can't track down one guy?
What are you doing up there?
Josh:Boyd is a dick.
I just don't understand why you can't hang out with me,
and McCracken.
David:Yeah, Jen.
Jennifer:You know, there's more to life than
just hanging out with you two all the time.
David:Like what?
Name one thing.
Josh:Yeah, name one thing that doesn't
involve dating your police friend.
Jennifer:I like men in uniform.
What can I say?
Josh:You know, garbage men wear uniforms.
Jennifer:I couldn't date a garbage man.
Josh:Why not?
They get great benefits.
Jennifer:No, sensitive nose.
David:Special delivery.
Wayne County, Dearborn Michigan.
Jennifer:So you solve the case of the missing pedarist?
David:Sure did.
Daniel Allen Burroughs, father of Susan Ellroy.
Died after a run-in with a bottle of scotch and a train.
Jennifer:Seriously?
David:Yep, two years ago this January.
He's dead.
Jennifer:We've got a lot of phone calls to make.
David:Jen.
Jennifer:Yeah?
David:How much more evidence do you need
against this guy to make him the prime suspect?
I mean, we've been chasing down a dead man.
Meantime, we've got this priest running around out there,
He's got a weird relationship with this girl.
Jennifer:Enough David.
David:Are you some kind of Catholic apologist or something?
I mean what's going on?
Jennifer:Just because the man is our most
likely suspect, it doesn't make him the culprit.
David:Actually, that's often exactly what that means.
Or am I just completely full of crap?
Jennifer:Look, come May, you can
take out as many priests as you want.
David:I don't have a vendetta against the man.
I don't.
But, I've been sloughing through
this mountain of evidence, with you, but you're
somehow overlooking it, or choosing to ignore it.
Jennifer:Stop.
Just get out of my office, both of you.
David:You're serious?
Josh:What did I do?
Come on!
[static]
David:It's not a uniform, it's a costume.
Jennifer:What's the difference?
David:No, there is a difference.
Big difference.
Jennifer:Oh, I think you're just jealous.
David:You know who would look good in a uniform?
Josh.
[Jennifer laughs]
Josh Riedford, Child Protective Services.
Jennifer:You're such a tool.
David:That is a creepy sign.
[loud engine noise]
Jennifer:Hello?
Hello, Amber?
Wait!
Is it Maybell or Maple Street?
Hello?
Hell!
David:Why don't you just have
Officer Boyd sext us the directions.
[laughs]
David:I'm so glad this guy was home.
Jennifer:Case number 0945325100.
We're at the Irons residence.
[knocking]
David:Only you could turn a 45 minute drive into three hours.
Jennifer:I just can't believe we're this late.
David:This place didn't even show up on our GPS.
Patrick:Hi there.
Jennifer:Hey, is Amber home?
Patrick:Sure, come on in.
Amber!
Jennifer Borman's here.
Amber:Coming!
Patrick:So you're here for Sydney too?
Amber:Hi Miss Borman.
Jennifer:Yeah.
Amber:They are here to talk to me about Susan,
so you could just follow me this way?
Patrick:I can keep a secret.
Jennifer:What is Father Patrick doing here?
Amber:When I got home from school he was
going around the house saying prayers.
He said my mom called him.
[door closes loudly]
Jennifer:But your mom's not home, right?
Amber:Well no, but he comes over all the time, so.
Jennifer:Amber, I just have some preliminary
questions for you and I need to get
your consent to get Sydney on camera.
You're 18, right?
Amber:Yeah.
Jennifer:Okay, can you please read this?
Amber:My name is Amber Irons, and I give
Jennifer Borman and Child Protective Services
permission to film myself and my sister Sydney Irons.
Jennifer:Okay.
Now you reported seeing bruises on
her arms, legs, neck and abdomen.
Is that correct?
Amber:Yeah.
Jennifer:And when did you last notice these?
Amber:Probably about two weeks ago.
I went to check on her, and she was asleep,
and one of her arms was outside the blankets
and it was covered in bruises like
someone had shaken her or something.
Jennifer:And you think your mother's responsible for this?
Amber:Well, she never hit us.
Jennifer:Yes, but there's a line.
Amber:Well, maybe sometimes she would grab our
shoulders and shake us or something, but that's it.
Jennifer:Okay, I'll tell you what.
We'll go in.
We'll talk to Sydney.
And then we'll decide what we're going to do next.
It'll be okay.
Amber:I put a camera in Syd's room.
I didn't want to look at it in case
maybe there was something on there.
Jennifer:I know.
All right, are you ready?
Amber:Yeah.
[knocking]
Syd?
[knocking]
Sydney?
[door squeaks]
Syd?
You remember Jennifer from school, right?
Jennifer:Hi Sydney.
What you working on?
David:Excuse me, would you mind
stepping outside for a second?
Sydney:Not much.
Its usually best if no one else is in the room.
Jennifer:Evolution, huh?
That's pretty interesting stuff.
David:If you could wait in the living room,
we'll come get you when we're done.
Sydney:Mommy says its all made up.
Jennifer:Oh really?
Do you have a favorite dinosaur?
David:Oh wow.
Did you do this yourself?
The peacock mural?
Sydney:Yeah.
David:That's awesome?
Where'd you learn to paint like that?
Sydney:I don't know.
I just did it.
David:I used to paint, but never that good.
That is impressive.
That's pretty cool.
Jennifer:Dave's right.
I've seem them.
They're not that good.
I wouldn't even consider them paintings.
But your mom must be pretty proud.
Sydney:Kind of.
Jennifer:Kind of?
Sydney:Yeah.
Jennifer:Do you mind if I ask you a
couple of questions about your mom?
Sydney:Sure.
Jennifer:Does your mom ever get mad?
Sydney:No.
Jennifer:Never?
Sydney:Sometimes.
Jennifer:When she gets mad, what does she do?
Sydney:She yells.
Jennifer:Anything else?
She ever hit you?
Sydney:No.
Jennifer:Does she shake you, anything like that?
So how did you get all of your bruises?
Sydney:What bruises?
Jennifer:Your sister said that you had bruises.
On your arms and legs.
Sydney:No.
Jennifer:Not even from recess?
Do you mind if I look?
What about your legs?
I see you've got a little scratch there.
[unintelligible female voices outside]
Sydney:I was playing on the jungle gym.
Gretchin:I'm not acting like a [unintelligible]
I'm being a parent.
Amber:I'm so sorry.
Gretchin:in my daughter's room without me here.
Amber:Mom!
Jennifer:Well, when we got here,
Father Patrick was already here.
He let us in.
I just thought that.
Gretchin:I know Father Patrick.
I don't know you.
Amber:Mom!
They were just asking us questions about Susan.
Stop!
Gretchin:Amber, didn't she already talk to you at school?
You did, right?
And Sydney.
So what else could you need from them?
Jennifer:They were just follow-up questions.
Gretchin:Questions like what, exactly?
Amber:Mom, it doesn't matter.
Gretchin:It does to me.
Amber:No it doesn't.
Jennifer:They're confidential.
Amber:Mom.
Gretchin:Sydney, what did this woman ask you?
Amber:Mom, enough!
Sydney:I don't know.
Gretchin:Okay now you're lying.
Sydney:No I'm not.
Amber:Mom, enough!
Gretchin:Get the hell out of my house.
David:Lets get out of here.
Come on.
Gretchin:Get out!
Amber:Mom, please stop!
David:Lets go.
Gretchin:I don't know why you don't understand that.
[loud slam]
[static]
Jennifer:Yes!
I was supposed to interview her today.
No, look.
David:Jen lets just check the school.
Jennifer:She fell asleep between jobs.
Kris:I can't find her.
I didn't even know I was falling asleep.
Jennifer:I don't have any more information.
If I
[static]
I would have shared it with you in the first place.
Kris:Statler's.
Jennifer:What?
Kris:She sometimes goes down to Statler's Corner
Store and hangs out with the kids down there.
Jennifer:Do you know a Statler's Corner Store?
Great, can you please drive by there?
[bird caws]
All right, Rick, you've got my cell phone.
Just call me if you find her.
Officer Boyd said he could drive around town,
but he can't do anything besides that,
because she's not technically missing.
Kris:What the hell does that mean?
Jennifer:It means that you're going to stay here
until she gets here or McCracken and I find her, okay?
David:Susan!
Susan!
Susan!
Susan!
[haunting singing]
Susan?
[static]
Oh my God.
Sweetheart, what are you doing here?
Are you okay?
Susan:Can you braid my hair?
David:No, I don't think so.
[loud squeak]
Susan:I can't either.
David:What are you doing?
It's freezing.
Susan:The other girls used to do it
for me until Sarah said I was a lesbian.
David:Here.
Listen, if you're okay I'm going to go
get some help and I'll be right back.
All right, can you stay put?
[buzzing]
Sarah:No, come back!
If you don't come back I'm going to fucking kill myself!
I'm going to kill myself!
I'll do it!
David:Wait, wait wait!
Don't say things like that.
Sarah:Sit down!
David:Don't say things like that, all right?
Listen,
[audio becomes distorted]
Your mom is worried sick about you, she's got
[normal audio]
that cops looking for you.
Susan:My mom.
Mom.
David:Jen's looking for you.
And I just want to let them know that you're okay.
Susan:I was a mom.
Have you seen my baby?
David:Your what?
No.
Susan:It was a Saturday.
I was about to cross the street and saw this big orange van.
I thought it was going to stop.
It just kept going, and it ran
right over me and my fucking baby!
Didn't even look back.
David:It's okay.
Shh!
It's okay.
You're right here with me, and you're safe and sound.
You're safe and sound and I'm sure your baby is fine.
I'm sure he's at home with your mom and,
Susan:It was a girl!
David:Okay, I'm sure she's fine.
Susan:She's not fine!
She was going to be a beautiful blonde baby and she's dead.
David:Can I help get you out of here, please?
Susan:You know Father Patrick loved hearing about my baby.
David:Father Patrick.
Yeah, I know about Father Patrick.
Susan:Father Patrick said I was as special as Joel.
David:Joel?
Who is that?
Is that somebody at school?
Susan:Joel was like the most special person.
David:Is he?
Susan:And for Father Patrick to say that I'm like Joel,
David:Does he got to Father Patrick's day care?
Susan:means he really loves me.
David:Who is that?
I don't know who that is.
Susan:Colin.
Colin never thought I was special, though.
David:Well.
Susan:He didn't even look at me.
He just looked at Cami.
Cami, Cami, Cami.
David:You and Cami just need to.
Susan:Everybody loves Cami.
David:Ignore each other.
Susan:I wish I was like Cami.
And then, I'd be perfect.
David:You are perfect,
Susan:And beautiful.
David:Just the way you are.
Susan:And Mike and Gabe would love me and
they would kiss me like they kissed her.
David:Wait wait wait, they kissed Cami?
Where was this?
Where did you see this?
Was this at school?
Susan:I used to be their only girl.
David:Susan listen, listen to me.
Susan:And they chose her instead.
David:Shh, listen to me.
We need to find Mike and Gabe, because
otherwise there will be more girls.
Susan:Why don't you ask her?
David:Susan I will.
I will ask her but there will be more just like you and her.
Susan:There won't be any more girls!
They only need one girl!
David:There was just you, and now there's Cami.
You said you saw them kissing her.
And I need to know where they are.
Susan:What?
No!
They kissed her?
No!
They couldn't have
David:Yeah.
Susan:They couldn't have kissed
her because they promised me.
David:Sweetheart you just said that.
Susan:Mike gave me this ring.
He said that I was the only one.
David:Well, here.
Susan:And Gabe gave me this ring.
David:Fine, um.
Susan:They said that they didn't need any other girls.
They promised.
David:Shh, we'll take all your rings
and we'll take them home with you.
Then we'll get you into some warm clothes.
Susan:You want my rings?
David:Sure, I love peacocks.
Wait wait wait.
Wait a minute.
No, no, no.
Wait, oh my God!
Susan:Why don't you love me?
Why don't you care?
David:Jennifer!
Susan:You don't love me!
You don't care!
David:Jennifer!!
[loud thump]
David:Jennifer!
Susan:Please!
Please take care of me!
David:Jennifer!
Susan:Please love me!
David:Jennifer!
[loud clanging]
Josh:My God, this is a lot of bubble wrap!
All right, so this goes right here, and, ooh!
[unintelligible dialogue in background]
I am not used to wielding this much technological power.
Jennifer:Thank you, taxpayers.
Josh:You know it's amazing.
This thing zooms like nobody's business.
Jennifer:We should have sent McCracken
crashing into a wall months ago.
Josh:That's an awesome idea.
Dude, we should do that every day.
Yeah, we'll train him on all different kinds of stuff.
Anything we need.
Josh:So, you finding anything worth while in there?
Jennifer:No, we.
Well, unless you consider dressing your
child up as Ziggy Stardust child abuse.
Josh:So, what, did she tape over her
sister's birthday party or something?
Jennifer:Yeah, I haven't even seen
the hidden footage that she gave me.
Josh:I'm sure it's absolutely riveting.
Hey, is this the Elroy case?
[children playing on screen]
Jennifer:Yeah.
Josh:You're giving off that, "Case Closed" vibe.
Jennifer:Well, all the stuff in the box.
Josh:So, did you guys ever end up finding Mike and Gabe?
Jennifer:They're archangels.
Josh:Archangels?
Jennifer:She wrote the note to herself.
The handwriting, it matches the letter H
and E in the word "they" in the journal.
Side-by-side comparison's in there.
Josh:What about the invasive wounds and
the proof of rape and everything?
Jennifer:Its self-mutilation.
To cope with the abuse from her father.
She thought the angels were preparing her to be
the vessel for the second coming or something.
Josh:Jeez.
Jennifer:How you doing?
David:What?
Jennifer:Are you all right?
David:Yeah.
Jennifer:How's Susan?
David:She's not dead.
Jennifer:I know lots of people who
aren't dead who are far from all right.
David:Well then, she's one of those.
Jennifer:Did they keep her for observation?
David:The only thing worse than being sent
into a mental institution is getting
let out and going back to school.
Jennifer:You just need to relax.
It's a hospital.
It's not an asylum.
David:She's just going to do it again,
the minute she gets out.
When she sees Father Patrick.
And she mentioned somebody named Joel?
I never remember hearing that name
in any of the interviews we did.
[papers rustling]
You know, I'm going to call Father Patrick,
Jennifer:David.
David:I'm going to ask him about it.
Jennifer:It's over.
Just let it go.
David:I think you mean let him go, and we already did that.
[phone ringing]
Jennifer:I wish that pointing
the finger at him was the answer.
Josh:Hello, Child Protective Services.
This is Josh, how can I help you?
Jennifer:I really do.
Where did you get that ring?
[stammers]
David:I went back to the locker room before the cops got there.
Josh:Okay, sure.
Jennifer:One of my first cases, the little boy's mother
kept eucalyptus in her house to try and cover up
Josh:Yeah, I mean I can help you.
Jennifer:that burnt plastic smell of the meth.
Josh:Okay, yeah, I understand.
Let me see if I can get her.
Hold on just a second.
Jennifer:I kept eucalyptus in my apartment for months.
Josh:Hey Jen, there's somebody named
Amber Irons on the phone for you.
She said she's talked to you at school before.
Jennifer:Dave, you should keep the ring.
Hello, this is Jennifer Borman.
What's Father Hitchens doing here?
David:Busting some chops would be my guess.
Jennifer:I didn't know that you knew him.
David:We're CPS, name a priest we don't know.
Jennifer:I'm going to talk to him.
David:Better get to him fast.
Looks like he's booking it.
[car doors slam]
David:Hey!
Jennifer:Stop!
David:Hey!
Jennifer:Stop!
David:Come back here!
Hey stop!
Josh:Didn't you say they had a
priest here last time you came?
Jennifer:Seriously?
[overlapping, arguing voices]
This kid's bleeding on the floor.
I think we need to focus on this.
David:Jennifer, she tried to kill herself.
Gretchin:Let Father Patrick do what he came to do.
Jennifer:I just don't understand what he came here to do.
Gretchin:Prayers take time.
Amber:Mom, she needs help.
Gretchin:I need you to trust me.
Jennifer:Miss Irons, Father Patrick,
I need for you both to leave the room.
I will call the police.
Gretchin:For what?
I haven't done anything wrong?
Where's he going?
Hey!
Hey, get back here.
Patrick:Jennifer, please believe me.
I'm just here to help.
Jennifer:Sydney honey, I know that,
I just want to help you.
Sydney:Get away!
Patrick:Please.
Sydney:I don't want to see him.
Patrick:I'd rather take this to the church.
Jennifer:You heard her.
Patrick:She's not in her right mind.
Jennifer:Get out!!
Amber:Father come with me.
Jennifer:Its okay Sydney, he's gone now.
Can I please take a look at you?
Sydney:He hurt me.
Jennifer:Who?
Sydney did somebody push you into these mirrors?
Who gave you the bruises?
You can tell me.
Sydney:He made me take off my clothes.
Jennifer:What?
Sydney:Why didn't you stop him?
Jennifer:Who?
Father Patrick?
Sydney:Amber had to make you wait while he made me get dressed.
Jennifer:Sydney, I want to take you out of here.
I want to get you some place that's really safe.
Sydney:He's going to kill Amber.
He's going to kill her and its going to be all my fault.
I don't want her to die.
Jennifer:Sweetheart, nobody's
[audio distorts]
going to kill anybody.
[male screaming]
[static]
Sydney!
Oh my God, Dave!
Dave!
Sydney come on lets get you out of here.
Sydney:I don't feel good.
Jennifer:I know honey.
Help me.
Help me get you up.
Sydney:Stop the Priest, Nineteen.
He's going to drown us, just like Mommy.
Jennifer:Sydney!
Josh:Oh God!
Jennifer:Come back!
Josh:Sydney!
Patrick:Don't let her outside.
Josh:There she is!
Come on, come on!
Patrick:Wait Sydney!
David:Lights?
I didn't turn out the lights.
[crashing]
Josh:She's in the kitchen!
No, no, no, no, don't!
David:Guys, she yanked the phone cord
Jennifer:David, did you see her?
David:out of the wall and she cut the power.
Jennifer:Have you seen Sydney?
[Door slams]
Josh:Sydney went this way!
Gretchin:Where did she go?
Josh:Go!
David:Stop her!
[slam]
David:I see her!
Jennifer:Come on!
Gretchin:My poor baby!
David:Sydney!
Josh:Sydney!
Jennifer:Syd!
David:Do you see her?
Jennifer:Sydney!
Josh:Sydney!
Jennifer:Josh, I see her!
David:No, No, Josh I saw here this way.
Come on.
Josh:Ok.
David:Shit, where the fuck did she go?
Josh:Sydney!
She wouldn't have gone in the woods, would she?
David:Do you see her at all?
I just saw her.
Josh:Sydney!
David:I just saw her run over here.
Josh:Dude, where the hell did Gretchin go?
David:I don't know.
Maybe Jen saw her too, I don't know.
Josh:Sydney!
David:Sydney!
Josh:Jen, do you see her over there?
I can't see shit.
Syd!
Syd!
Its going to be okay!
[giggle]
Sydney, wait!
Guys, I found her!
She's right over here.
Come on!
[giggling]
What? Russell?
Russell!
Hey!
[strange, deep groaning]
David!
I got turned around in here.
[groaning]
Syd!
Wait a second!
Jennifer:I got her!
I got her.
Sydney:Fucking cunt, get off!
Josh:Jennifer, hold on to her!
David:How about now, anything?
[Clicking]
How about now?
Jen?
Jennifer:No.
Nothing.
Gretchin:Did you hear him?
Ordering me into my own home like I'm a kid.
David:Hey, Josh.
Man are you all right?
You okay?
Patrick:It's complicated.
You look like hell.
Jennifer:If either of you have anything you want to tell me.
Josh:Yeah, did you see that kid running around out there?
David:Yeah I know she was fast.
Josh:No, the boy.
David:A boy, what?
Gretchin:This is my house!
Josh:There was a,
Amber:Can't we get her to a hospital?
David:Yeah, we're working on that.
Jen!
Jen, let's get Sydney out of here.
Gretchin:You're not taking her anywhere.
Patrick:Gretchin, please.
Jennifer:Not until we've dressed her cuts.
Patrick:They're not going to take her away from you.
Gretchin:No, not at all!
David:What?
Gretchin:I know my rights!
David:Uh, we're not seeing any.
Are you sure it wasn't a trick of the light or something?
Josh:Trick of the light?!
David:Mirrors reflection.
Josh:David, did you not see the blood on the mirrors?
Gretchin:You're the one who said
the only thing that can save her is.
Josh:Just go back and look at the tape.
Patrick:I know what I said.
Josh:While you're at it, why don't
you look at the footage of the woods?
Patrick:I still wholeheartedly believe that.
Jennifer:Why the woods?
Patrick:But Gretchin think about it.
David:Because Josh thinks he saw
a boy running around out there.
Patrick:If it makes them feel better,
Jennifer:Okay, so they have neighbors.
David:They don't have neighbors.
Are you kidding me?
Josh:No.
I saw Russell.
David:There wasn't another house for miles when we drove up here.
Jennifer:Olyphant?
Gretchin:Look at her.
Josh:Yeah.
David:Jen, we're 15 miles from anybody else.
Josh:I'm serious.
I saw Russell out there.
Jennifer:Okay, I believe you.
It's just that we've got to.
Josh:Yeah, but.
Patrick:All this is doing is just upsetting her.
David:Hey Josh, listen, you're tired.
Jennifer:: I know its going to be hard
but I really need you to wake up Sydney.
David:We're all tired.
We all just ran around outside in the dark.
Josh:No, seriously.
Amber:Syd, come on.
We're going to go to the car, okay?
Jennifer:Josh, could you please go
outside and get the car running?
Sydney:I want Blankley.
Josh:Yeah, okay.
Amber:Blankley will be fine, safe here.
David:Blankley, who's that?
Is that her blanket?
Jennifer:I would love it if you would just
stay over there, away from Sydney right now.
David:Sydney, I'll be right back.
I'll get it for you sweetheart.
Be right back.
Gretchin:She's my daughter!
Jennifer:And Amber's doing an
excellent job taking care of her.
David:Where is it?
Deep whisper:David.
David:Hello?
Hmm.
Ah!
Hey, I got Blankley.
Jennifer:Well, she needs a doctor and
I'm pretty sure Gretchin did something.
[high-pitched scream]
[Josh screaming]
David:Josh, you ok?
Sydney:Get off me!
Gretchin:She cut her throat!
Please, she cut her throat!
Somebody help us!
Amber:Hey Sydney, I hope you get everything you want.
Is that good?
>> Anything else?
Amber:Thanks for being an awesome sister?
I don't know.
Thank you.
>>No problem.
Diane:Happy Birthday!
Amber:Hey, say thank you.
Diane:That's okay Amber.
How are you?
Amber:Good, how are you?
Diane:Good!
Amber:Hey Uncle Rick.
Rick:Hey Amber, how are you?
Amber:Good.
Rick:Good.
Diane:Where's your mom?
Amber:Hey Cami, have you guys
said happy birthday to Sydney yet?
Cami:Happy birthday Sydney!
Amber:Susan.
Susan:Happy birthday.
Thank you for the earrings, very much.
Ziggy:Happy birthday Sydney.
Your birthday's frickin awesome.
Hope you get everything you wanted.
[static]
[cheering]
Gretchin:Did you make a wish?
Sydney:Yeah.
Amber:Don't tell anyone or it won't come true.
Ok?
Gretchin:Sydney!
No fingers!
Amber:Relax.
Gretchin:Other people want to eat that too.
[static]
[static]
[static]
[laughing]
[covers rustle]
[footsteps]
[door creaking]
[bump]
Sydney:I don't want to be in here by myself.
Gretchin:Sydney, you're not by yourself.
I'm just down the hall and Amber's right around the corner.
Okay?
Sydney:Okay.
Gretchin:Okay.
Good night.
Sydney:Good night.
[door creaking]
Gretchin:Time to get up.
Come on.
Up, up, up!
Come on.
School's not going to wait for you.
I want you eating breakfast by
the time I'm out of the shower.
I mean it Sydney.
Sydney Irons!
I told you to get up.
Now you're going to have to skip
breakfast so we're not late.
And your sister's already gone.
Great.
[water splashing]
[Sydney whines]
Now get up!
[cries]
Oh, come on Syd.
It's just water.
It's not even cold.
Ok, ok, mommy's sorry.
Come here.
Sydney, what happened to your arms baby?
Sydney:I don't know.
Gretchin:You don't know?
Did Amber do this?
David:So everybody's gone home from work.
Jennifer's been acting really
weird lately about Father Patrick.
I've tried everything I can to bring his
suspicious behavior to her attention, but
I don't know what else I can do without.
She's got a box full of tapes, wherein she's
investigating Father Patrick off the record.
I'm going to copy all of them without disturbing
the originals so that she doesn't find out about this.
[drumming fingers]
[beep]
Jennifer:I don't know why I keep coming here.
[unintelligible] time I leave here I tell
myself it's the last time, but here I am.
I hope you're in pain.
[voices over hospital intercom and in background]
[static]
David:Hello.
Carla:Hi.
David:How are you?
Carla:Good, how are you?
David:I'm good, thank you.
I was wondering.
I was wanting to do some community
service for the patient in room 19.
Carla:Hmm, the old wing.
What were you planning on doing for him?
David:Well that sort of depends on
the court's decision next week.
Carla:The courts?
David:Yeah, Judge says I get a lighter
sentence if I help out the elderly.
Carla:Oh, what did you do?
[static]
David:I killed a man.
[laughing]
I'm kidding.
Carla:I was about to get my mace.
David:Oh God, yikes, no.
But I really was wanting to get
him a gift basket or something.
It's something I do around Thanksgiving.
Carla:You always pick a strange person to get a gift for?
David:Yeah, doesn't everybody?
Carla:No.
[giggles]
David:Do you know what his name is?
Carla:Sure.
Father Vincent.
But you might want to pick somebody else.
He's comatose, so, you know.
David:Oh he's a priest?
Carla:What kind of basket do you plan on getting for him?
David:Well I'm not sure.
What sort of things do brain-dead priests like?
Carla:I don't know, but you can ask the lady
that's in the room talking to him right now.
She comes every Saturday.
She hasn't missed one.
Her name is Janine.
David:Janine?
Carla:Yeah, she's the only one who ever comes to visit.
So she's your best bet.
I'm not sure who she is, though.
But I have a hunch she's like his
long lost daughter or something.
She's always in there crying.
David:Really?
All right, well I'll definitely talk to her.
Thank you so much, I really appreciate it.
Josh:You know she's going to see this, right?
David:I switched the tapes, so we're okay.
Josh:I just don't think this is a good idea.
Hitchens:Excuse me.
Josh:Oh shit.
David:Hi, Father Hitchens, how are you?
I'm David McCracken.
This is Josh Riedford with Child Protective Services.
Hitchens:Put the camera away.
I have absolutely nothing to say to you.
David:You didn't even know what I was going to ask you.
Hutchins:I think I can guess.
David:Oh yeah?
Hutchins:Father Patrick has already
answered all of your questions.
David:I didn't even mention Father Patrick.
Hutchins:You're in his day care room.
David:We're investigating the Susan Ellroy case.
Hutchins:He has already answered all of your questions.
David:I know, but some new information came to light.
She mentioned somebody named Joel.
She didn't give his last name, so we thought
Hutchins:I don't know any Joel.
David:maybe there's a Joel here or something.
None at all?
The only Joel I know is dead.
Killed himself on '01.
David:Do you remember his last name?
Hammett.
Everybody in town knows about it, so you can ask them.
David:Ok.
Hutchins:Now please, I've been more than accommodating.
David:Okay, thank you.
Appreciate your time.
Hutchins:God bless you both.
Josh:Wow, that Hitchins guy is an asshole.
David:You know, I don't think he even,
[Father Patrick chanting in latin]
Ryan:Hey Sydney, Happy Birthday.
It's your favorite cousin.
Sydney:This is so cool!
[buzzing static]
[door creaking]
[creaking]
[rustling papers]
Sydney:What are you doing?
Amber:Just putting back Pepper.
Father Patrick:Amber!
Jennifer Borman's here.
Amber:Coming!
David:Josh, I got the tape in, come on!
Patrick:Gretchin, stop the car!
Josh:Sydney!
Sydney, can you open the door for me?
[engine revs]
[brakes screech]
[loud thump]
Jennifer:Misses Irons get out of the car right now.
You are not helping your case.
Josh:Sydney.
Sydney can you even hear us?
Patrick:We're trying to help, Gretchin.
Jennifer:You're kidnapping your daughter!
Patrick:I can help Gretchin!
Gretchin:You can't kidnap your own daughter.
She's my daughter!
Josh:Sydney, can you open up the door.
Can you hear me?
Jennifer:Gretchin, we're all here to help you.
Jennifer:We need to work this out.
Patrick:Come on!
Josh:Will you put down the camera for a second and help?
David:I am, Josh!
I'm trying to help get her out of the fucking car.
Josh:You know what?
Screw this.
I'm going to go see if I can find a baseball bat.
David:Josh!
Jennifer:We're not taking her.
Patrick:Right, right.
So lets get out of the car, ok?
And lets get Sydney the help she needs, all right?
Come on, trust me, we can do this.
Gretchin:I just want my daughter to be safe.
Patrick:They're not going to take her away.
She's going to be all right.
You're going to be all right.
It'll be okay.
You've just got to trust me.
Gretchin:It's not safe.
Patrick:No, they're going to be safe.
We all want Sydney to be better, okay?
We do.
You called me here for a reason.
Let me help you.
Let me help you.
Gretchin:What's wrong with her?
Patrick:Just trust me.
It's something we can fix.
We can make it happen, all right?
We can do it.
[Gretchin cries]
Turn the engine off.
Come on.
Come on.
[engine noise stops]
That a girl.
Good, good.
We'll be all right.
[pounding]
Patrick:No, Sydney!!
David:Fuck.
[engine starter struggling]
Josh:Are you out of gas, maybe?
David?
David!
David:What?!
Josh:Are you getting anything?
David:No.
It was just fucking working a second ago.
Jennifer:Did she mess with anything?
Josh:How in the hell could she
have messed with anything, Jen?
Jennifer:Why don't you just set that down and help?
Josh:Hey, I'm trying to help, ok?
I'm giving you guys light, aren't I?
David:Guys!
Let's just go inside and lets get her.
It's three versus one.
Josh:That's your whole plan?
"Ger her"?
And then what?
David:Take her out of here.
Jennifer:What, that's crazy?
David:And actually, take her where
some fucking cars work for a change.
Jennifer:Where are you going?
Josh:David.
David:She killed her mom and her sister.
Somebody's got to do something.
Well if you're not going to help me take her
out of here, then what do you expect me to do?
Jennifer:David, stop.
David:Okay, fine, I'm stopped.
What?!
What?
Jennifer:Okay, so you honestly think
that it's a good idea to take a psychologically
distressed nine-year-old out of her house in the middle
of the night and then walk for miles in this cold?
David:What's the alternative?
Okay, Jen, look, I'm going to run as fast as I can, okay?
And I'm going to run until my lungs explode,
but you guys have to stay here and keep her safe from him.
All right.
How far was it to town, Josh.
Josh:I don't know.
It took us like 45 minutes to get here?
David:Okay, so I'll be as fast as I can.
Somebody's got to get help, though.
Josh:No, but David, that was 45 minutes driving.
You can't seriously run that far tonight.
David:I'll be fine.
Just keep her away from Patrick.
Josh:Are you out of your mind?
Jen, he'll be fine.
[Sydney singing in background]
Patrick:Her family, and you're going to go
in there armed with a plate full of food?
Jennifer:Enough, Patrick.
I'm not armed with anything.
I'm going in there to feed a hungry child.
Patrick:That's not a child.
That's not a child.
Jennifer:Stay out of the room.
Syd?
[Sydney humming]
Syd, I brought you something to eat sweetheart.
Sydney:I'm not hungry.
Jennifer:No?
[humming resumes]
When was the last time you ate?
Can I take this blanket off and see your pretty face?
Sydney:No!
[humming resumes]
Jennifer:Do you know what happened to Amber and Mommy?
Jennifer:Sydney, when I was a little girl about your age,
I came home from school really excited
to tell my mom about the A that
I'd gotten in the science project.
I ran all over the house looking for her,
but then, I saw her outside in our lake.
She was easy to spot because she had on
her favorite yellow summer dress.
But it was cold that day, and I thought
it was weird that she was swimming.
Sydney:Yellow is my favorite color.
Jennifer:It used to be mine, too.
Sydney:Was she freezing?
Jennifer:Yes she was.
But not the type of freezing you can warm up from.
Your hands, they're so cold.
[rumbling]
Sydney:Why didn't you save me, Jenny?
Jennifer:Save you?
Sydney:I didn't want to die.
As soon as I hit that freezing water,
Mom:I wanted to get out.
I wanted to
Sydney:be with you.
But you came home too late.
Mom:I don't blame you sweetie.
Both voices:I was just sad.
It just wasn't the same when Daddy left.
Jennifer:Mom?
Vincent :It's okay to cry, though.
We can bake those guilt-free brownies, Nineteen.
Just keep digging up the dead.
Patrick:Nineteen?
[humming resumes]
Josh:Hey, what's wrong?
Jennifer:Josh, not right now.
[cries]
Josh:You ever mention your mom to her?
Jennifer:I don't know.
[sniff]
But if she can tell me what song my mom used
to play me on the piano, I'll hire her in an instant.
Josh:Yeah, I'll draw up the papers as soon as we get back.
Jennifer:Yeah.
Josh:Jen, we got to get out of here soon.
I mean with the pipes frozen now.
Jennifer:Where the hell is Dave?
Josh:Russell?
[clicking]
Russell?
[clicking]
[door slams]
Russell?!
Patrick:Who are you looking for?
Josh:Just, nobody.
Patrick:You seeing somebody you shouldn't be seeing?
Josh:I don't know what I'm seeing.
Patrick:I have the feeling I haven't
seen Sydney since I got to this house.
Josh:What?
What do you mean?
Sydney:You all see a little girl.
I see Joel Hammett.
Josh:Yeah, I've heard of him.
He's dead though, right?
Patrick:Yeah.
He was my only exorcism.
That demon, or whatever you call it,
is the same one that has Sydney.
Josh:Did your exorcism work?
Patrick:No.
[static]
Josh:Dave?
Father Hitchins?
Hello?
Father?
Oh my God!
[breathing heavy]
[distortion]
Jennifer:We don't know that.
He's out there with whatever did that.
Jesus, his eyes.
Josh:I know.
Jennifer:Where the hell have you been?
Are you okay?
Josh:David, where are the cops?
Patrick:What's that?
[paper rustles]
David:Guess he didn't want to give it to you himself.
Patrick:Who?
David:Hitchens.
I got all turned around out there.
I think you were there,
Josh:What?
David:But about an hour ago I couldn't find.
Patrick:Where?
David:He's out there somewhere.
It's like, that way -ish.
He was acting really weird.
Josh:Like weird how?
David:I don't know.
I told him about Gretchin and Amber, and then
Jennifer:Come on Dave.
David:he just stared at me.
[static on tape]
Josh:Hey where did she get water from?
Vincent:name, sweetheart?
Jenny:Jenny
Vincent:Jenny?
Vincent:Father Vincent.
You can call me Father Vinnie.
[static]
Josh:What is this?
Vincent:What's making those beautiful brown eyes so sad?
Patrick:Not what I taped.
Josh:Which was what?
Jenny:My mommy died.
Vincent:That's right, I heard about that.
Patrick:I recorded Sydney talking in Joel's voice.
[tape fast forwarding]
Last night I sent Isaac to get it to the Bishop.
Josh:Father Hitchins?
Yeah, we saw him tearing out of here with it.
Vincent:Bet I can make you feel better.
Jenny:What are you doing?!
Stop!
Jennifer:What is this?
Josh:It's what David brought back with him this morning.
Jennifer:What is this?
Where did you get that?
Jenny:Stop it!
Patrick:I need to talk to you.
I mean alone.
Jennifer:Whatever you have to say, you can say it in here.
Patrick:I knew Father Vincent.
He took me under his wing.
He was a sick man.
But the night before he was transferred,
he asked me to hear his confession.
He confided in me, told me he was going to start all over.
Begin again.
I could have said something, but I thought,
a person can change.
He was moved to an orphanage of all places.
I just assumed that he would change.
It was what was the easiest thing for me to believe.
What I wanted to believe.
He tried to contact me a few times, but I didn't
see him until his mind was on the way out.
Then I went, saw him at the home
where the church had sent him.
Jennifer; And?
Patrick:He told me.
He told me the number.
Said it would be branded on him in hell.
Nineteen.
Sydney called you Nineteen last night.
Jennifer:She did.
Patrick:Look Jennifer, I'm not.
I'm just trying to tell you that I think Sydney's
being punished for something that I did.
I think we all are.
Jennifer:Oh.
I get it.
Yeah, we're all just pawns in God's test for you?
Patrick:No.
Jennifer:Fuck you.
Patrick:I'm so sorry, but I'm not him.
Jennifer:No, you just kept your
mouth shut and let it happen.
Patrick:And I will pay the consequences for that.
Look, I couldn't help you, but I can help her.
I can save Sydney, but I need you on my side to help me.
Jennifer:Like you saved Joel Hammett?
David:What?!
Jennifer:If you want to save her,
just stay the fuck away from her.
David:Hey, who is Joel?
Patrick:She's going to kill herself if we don't.
David:Who the fuck is Joel?
Josh:Dave, I was going to tell you as soon as I could.
I just didn't get a chance.
He told me about Joel while you were gone.
Want to know something he didn't tell Jen?
When Patrick looks at Sydney, he doesn't see Sydney.
He sees Joel.
Did you hear what I said?
The guy's seeing the dead kid.
David:Right, I heard you.
Josh:Does that not seem extraordinarily bizarre to you?
David:No more bizarre than you seeing Russell.
Josh:Or you seeing Hitchins?
David:So what's your point?
Josh:My point is
Look, I don't know what the fuck is going on, okay?
I don't know, I just.
This all started when we got to this house.
We need to get the hell out of here.
David:I'm not going back out there.
You don't know what's out there.
Josh:What?
David:Do you know why we're here, Josh?
Josh:Yeah, because all the pipes are frozen,
and we haven't had anything to drink in two days?
David:We're here for Jen and Patrick.
Sydney is just a means to an end.
Just like us.
Just like Susan.
Josh:What the hell are you talking about?
David:Jen's always been quick to dismiss
any case that's connected to Patrick.
Josh:Oh come on, because of those tapes
you found of her investigating him?
I thought you put that to rest.
David:Do you really think Susan was
writing those letters to herself?
Josh:What does that have to do with anything?
David:Took the note from Susan's bag,
you know the one from Mike and Gabe,
to a handwriting analyst and it
didn't match her handwriting at all.
A female wrote it, but it wasn't Susan.
Jen found it in her backpack.
Josh:David.
David:What, you think she's too
by-the-book to plant any evidence?
Josh:Jen is our friend.
Don't,
David:Question it?!
Josh:Forget that.
David:I've wasted too much of my time
chasing down answers when all I had to do was wait.
Be patient and wait.
He will give me all the answers I've been looking for.
Josh:He?
He who?
David, what are you talking.
Jennifer:So what did you want?
David:How are you holding up?
Jennifer:Okay, I guess.
David:So, you know about Joel.
Susan's Joel.
Jennifer:Yeah.
David:You've known about him this whole time.
And you were, what, just going to
let me figure it out on my own?
Jennifer:Look, I just didn't want you to go looking
for answers where I knew there weren't any.
David:Jen.
No, you avoided the issue so that I'd give up on her.
And who is he anyway?
How does she know about him?
Jennifer:He's just a kid that Father
Patrick tried to do an exorcism on.
He went crazy, killed his dad, and then
hung himself after he got committed.
David:This all sounds really familiar.
Jennifer:Well I don't know how Susan knew about him.
David:See these are things that I could have
asked Patrick about, had you let me talk to him,
or that you could have asked him at any point.
Jennifer:I don't need this from you right now.
David:Do you remember that time I came into the office,
very upset after I went and visited Susan?
And I wanted to talk to Patrick about all this shit?
And what was it you said to me?
Let it go.
Jennifer:This is different.
David:How?
I watched this girl open up her wrist in front of me,
and she's talking about some kid,
she's comparing herself to him,
never heard of him before so I think, well, I'll just,
I don't know, find some answers for her?
Maybe help her out a little bit?
And you just lie to me and stonewall me?
Jennifer:I never lied to you.
I just didn't bring him up.
I just didn't want you to get consumed by this whole thing.
David:She's not a thing.
I know about your tapes.
Jen, this whole thing with Vincent.
I wish I could change what happened to you.
I can't imagine what it's like.
This whole, I didn't know it was a priest.
But that doesn't change the fact that you
throw whoever gets in your way
to the wolves in order to serve your own agenda.
Jennifer:Don't even act like I
don't care about these people.
Every week I sit with Joel Hammett's mom
so that she can talk about a dead son.
[static]
David:Yeah, that doesn't sound like it
would help your file on him at all.
So what do you have to show for all this dirt-digging,
all this sneaking around.
Do you have anything at all?
Jennifer:I have enough.
David:You do?
You have enough evidence to send that guy to jail,
and you've been, what, just sitting on it?
Just waiting for the right time to stick it to him?
I've seen all your tapes, Jen.
You've seen them to.
You have nothing.
And I think you're just too afraid
of the fact that there's nothing you
can do to change what happened to you.
Jennifer:I didn't mean to hurt you.
David:Yeah well, you did.
Jennifer:Sorry.
It's just sad that you're all I have.
You and Josh, my closest friends, my family.
Please don't hate me.
David:Who's fault do you think that is?
Jennifer:I'm going to go check on Sydney.
[Susan whispering]
[paper tearing]
David:Dear Susan, love Mike and Gabe.
Susan.
[whispering]
Dear Susan,
Gabe.
Love
Dear Susan.
Susan.
Josh:David!
David what is going on?
Jen just came out there bawling her eyes out.
What did you do?
Hey, what's wrong with you?
David:Sydney is Mike and Gabe.
Josh:What is going on?
[grunts]
Josh:Hey.
David:Sydney!
Josh:Damn it!
David!
David:Sydney!
Josh:David!
David:Where the fuck did you get these?!
Sydney!
Josh:David!
Jennifer:Let her go!
Josh:David!
Hey!
Jennifer:Let her go!
Josh:Shit!
Sydney:I didn't do anything.
David:She has letters to Susan in her room in her room in that mural.
Get the fuck off me!
Jennifer:You've got to calm down.
David:Where did you get them?!
Jennifer:Sydney, where did you get those?
How did they get in your room?
Sydney:He needed me to tell her how to get
boys so that Father Patrick would love her.
David:You tried to fucking kill her!
Jennifer:That's enough.
Josh:God!
Jennifer:Honey, who made you write this?
Sydney:He said I had to so that Amber and Mommy
would be okay and we could all be a family.
David:Yeah, well I got news for you.
Amber and Mommy are dead!
[slam]
Jennifer:David!
Sydney:You're lying!
David:Am I?
Jennifer:Shut up!
David:Amber!
Gretchin!
If you love Sydney you'll come here right now.
Sydney:Shut up, shut up, shut up!
Josh:Back the fuck off!
David:Ow.
[static]
Josh:God!
Jennifer:Syd!
Josh:Dude, come on.
She's going to kill herself.
Jennifer!
[static]
Shit.
[static]
David!
David:Come on, I think I heard her over here.
Josh:David, wait for me, man.
Sydney!
[heavy breathing]
David:What the fuck is a car doing all the way out here?
Patrick:I think we all know.
Josh:Shit, I don't know.
David:What the fuck happened?
Josh:It's still on and everything.
[on radio]
Jennifer:Oh, I get it.
Yeah, we're all just pawns in God's test
[unintelligible]
Fuck you!
[Sydney humming]
Jennifer:No you don't get
[static]
David:It's Hitchens' car.
[static]
Josh:What the hell?
David:What is it doing all the way out here?
Josh:Dude you got me.
I don't know.
[on radio] Patrick: I couldn't help you but I can help her.
David:There's no footprints or anything, like.
Jennifer:Sydney come back!
Josh:Jen?
David:It's Jen!
Josh:Jen!
David:Jen, hang on!
Josh:Dave wait.
Josh:Jen, we're coming.
[footsteps]
Dave, wait up.
[unintelligible yelling]
[roaring of water]
Jennifer:Out of here!
[voices arguing]
[Sydney screaming]
[organ music]
Josh:Where's that coming from?
Where the hell is that coming from?
[static]
[coughing]
David!
David!
David:Josh!
David:What are you doing?
Josh:Huh?!
Jen:How did you get here?
Josh:What is this place?
David:Jen?
Josh:What the hell?!
David:Jen!
Jen!
Josh, Jen's in the house!
Josh:Jen!
David wait up.
David:Jen!
[heavy breathing]
Josh:Jen?!
David:She was just here a second ago.
[organ music]
Jen?
Where are we?
David:I don't know.
Josh:Where did she go?
Jen?!
David:Jen?
Jen?
Jen, what are you doing here?
What are you doing here?
Mom:Who are you?
David:Whoa whoa whoa!
Mom:What do you want?
We thought you were somebody else.
Sorry!
Mom:Get out of my house!
Josh:No, sorry, we.
Run baby!
Jennifer:Mom!
Josh:Jen?!
David:What are you doing in this lady's house?
Josh:Jen are you ok?
Jennifer:Please, please, don't hurt her.
Josh:Just calm down, okay?
Mom:Take anything, just don't hurt her.
David:Lady, we're not going to steal anything.
Jennifer:Get back from her!
Josh:Whoa, God Jen!
Jen!
David:Put the knife down.
It's me.
It's David, it's Josh.
Josh:What are you doing?
Are you out of your mind?
You know us!
Jennifer:Stop following us.
David:Jen, put the knife down.
Josh:Calm down.
David:Put the knife down.
Jennifer:Just stay back.
Josh:Officer Boyd is a dick!
Yeah, that's right he sucks.
David:Yeah!
Josh:Remember at Russell's apartment?
He was just hitting on you outside,
instead of just doing his job.
David:Remember that time he brought you by the office,
and he didn't even bring you up?
Mom:Jenny!
Mom:Jen, they're crazy.
They're crazy!
Josh:Give me the knife!
Jennifer:No!
Let go!
[Jennifer screaming]
David:Josh!
Josh!
Jen!
Jen!
Josh:Jen, come on!
[loud rushing noise]
We got to get out of here!
Jennifer:Mommy!
Fuck!
Josh:What the hell?!
Where are we now?
Jennifer:She was just here!
Josh:What the hell is going on?
Jennifer:Mom!
Josh:God!
Jen!
Jennifer:Momma!
Josh:Jen, hey, hey, hey.
Settle down for a second.
Listen to me.
Jen, that wasn't her.
Jennifer:Mom!
Josh:Hey!
Listen to me.
Jennifer:Get the fuck off me!
[static]
Josh:Jen!
There's no way that was your mom.
She's dead, remember?
Jennifer:I lived with her.
Josh:Jen, how long were you there?
Look, it's going to be fine, all right?
We just need to find David.
Jennifer:He hates me.
Josh:No, he doesn't hate you.
He'll be fine.
[static]
David!
[static]
David!
Syd?
Sydney!
Oh my God!
Oh, Sydney, where have you been?
Are you okay?
Sydney:Have you seen Mommy?
Josh:No.
Sydney, she's.
Sydney:I've been looking everywhere for her.
Jennifer:No, I'm sorry sweetheart.
What does she look like?
Josh:Jen.
Jennifer:Well maybe we can help her.
Josh:No we can't help her because she.
Sydney:Oh Miss Borman, thank you so much!
[Sydney's humming in background]
Josh:I don't.
[explosions]
Sydney:Run!
[booming]
Josh:Go!
Come on, we've got to get out of here, Go!
Sydney:Come on!
Jennifer:You're hurting me.
Josh:Don't stop, come on!
[audio muffled]
Sydney:Mommy's house!
Jennifer:We're not going to Mommy's house.
Josh:Jennifer, move!
This whole place is collapsing, go!
Sydney:Run!
[crashing]
Josh:Go, go, go!
Jennifer:Sydney!
[audio cuts in and out]
[Sydney and Jennifer's yelling fades off]
[panting]
Jennifer:Syd!
Josh:Oh shit, not again!
Jennifer:Sydney!
Josh:Sydney!
Jennifer:Syd!
Josh:Does this look?
Where are we?
Jennifer:I was with Sydney one minute now she's gone?
Josh:Okay, fine.
Calm down.
We just need to calm down for one second all right?
I'm sure she's.
Ow, God!!
Jennifer:Josh!
[distant] Josh:Don't let her kiss David!
Josh:Who was that?!
Hey!
Hey, Jen, come on!
Jennifer:Wait, Josh!
Josh:Come on!
[grunts]
[Sydney humming]
[Davie humming along]
Josh:What is this place?
[static]
Jen, what's going on?
[David sobs]
Josh:What was that?
Oh, David!
David:I couldn't save her!
I couldn't save her
Josh:Oh God.
David:Stay away!
Josh:Oh God.
David:I don't know why I ever listened to you Jennifer!
Jennifer:What?!
Get off of him!
Josh:Jennifer!!
[screams]
Josh:Grab her!
Jennifer:Leave him alone!
Josh:Pull him off!
[muffled screams from David]
Josh:Fuck!
What are you doing?!
Jennifer:Let him go!
Let him go!
[snap]
[Jennifer screams]
Josh:No, David!
David!
[distorted noise]
David!
David no!
[panting]
Josh [at top of stairs]: This place is like a war zone.
Josh:Jen?
David.
David!
David:Whoa, that's awesome.
Josh:David!!
What?
Hey!
Josh [at top of stairs]: Hi, I'm Josh
Riedford with Child Protective Services.
We need to speak with you and your husband.
Josh:Hey, can you hear me?!
Hello!
Hey!
What?
Dave:This is without a doubt the
freakiest place I've ever seen.
Josh [above]:Yeah, well, get used to it.
You're not going to be this,
Josh:David!
David:freakiest place I've ever seen.
Josh [above]:Yeah, well, get used to it.
You're not going to be visiting many mansions.
David:This place is like a war zone.
[Josh above laughs]
David:Whoa, that's awesome.
Josh:David!
Josh [at top of stairs]: Hi, I'm Josh
Riedford with Child Protective Services.
We need to speak with you and your husband.
Meghan:My husband's not here.
Josh:May we come in?
Meghan:I haven't really had a chance to clean.
Josh [above]:Look, we got a call from
one of your son's teachers saying that
he hasn't been eating lunch at school.
He said that you and your husband have been
notified multiple times over the past month to
either pack lunch for him or give him lunch money.
Meghan:I do my best.
I give him everything I can.
Josh:I talked to Russell at school today.
He's sick.
Have you taken him to a doctor?
Meghan:Look, I'm looking for a job.
We don't have health insurance.
Josh:There are free clinics, Miss Olyphant.
Meghan:Okay.
All right.
Josh:I'm going to come back in a week to check on him.
Here's my card if you need anything in the meantime.
Enjoy the rest of your afternoon.
David:So what, that's it?
Josh:I've just got to keep checking up on it.
David:You mean him?
Josh:Yeah.
David:It's sad how some parents need to be policed over something as basic ,
Josh:Miss Olyphant!
Miss Olyphant.
Hello?!
[bells]
Hello!
Jennifer:Let him go!
David!
Josh:Jen?
Oh God, Jen!
Jennifer:Let go of me!
David!
Josh:But I thought I'd lost you.
Hey!
Hey calm down.
Jennifer!
It's me.
Jennifer:Josh!
Where did you go?
Josh:It's going to be okay.
Jennifer:after.
Josh:I don't know.
I saw David right after it happened.
[static]
It was the time we went back, right before you got bit.
I was there watching myself talk to him.
I fucking saw him!
At your mom's house, across the lake,
I saw David talking to Father Hitchins.
It was just like he described it at the Irons house.
I don't think he's actually dead.
[David sobbing]
Dave?
[booming echoes]
Jennifer:Don't go.
Josh:But what if it's him?
Jennifer:It's not.
Josh:You don't know that.
I'm just going to go check it out.
I'll be right back.
Just don't go anywhere, okay?
[panting]
[footsteps]
David?
David?
Patrick:Who are you?!
How did you get here?
Josh:Who are you?
Get away from me!
Get away!
Patrick:Josh?
Patrick!
Oh Josh, you shouldn't be here.
This is very real.
Trust me,
I've been here.
long enough,
listening to the stories.
What Vincent was doing to them.
Josh:Wait, kids?
Patrick:That's good.
That's good.
Keep away from them.
Josh:Okay.
I will.
Patrick:Jennifer's here?!
Josh:Yeah, she didn't want to come down here.
Patrick:No!
No!
We've got to go!
We've got to go!
Nobody gets left here alone!
[static]
Patrick:away from her!
Jennifer:No, you leave them alone!
Patrick:Do not listen to them.
They are lying.
Jennifer:No!
I'm not going to listen to you.
I know these kids.
We grew up together at Saint Anthony's.
Patrick:Listen!
Jennifer:Get them out of here before he gets back.
Kuato:No!
Jennifer:It'll be okay baby.
Patrick:If they're here, Vincent's not far behind.
We have to get going.
Sully:Patrick has to go see Vincent.
Patrick:We don't want to be here when Vincent arrives.
Jennifer:No, we are leaving.
Josh:What?
Oh God.
Jennifer:My God.
Patrick:Oh no, it's Vincent.
Josh:Stay away!
Patrick:Run!
What are you doing?
Kuato:You have to save her.
Jennifer:Who?
Sydney:Help me!
Josh:Sydney!
Patrick:Run, please, go!
You have to go, now!
Jennifer:Come on!
Patrick:Josh!

Josh:I'm coming.
Lets go!
Patrick:Stay with her!
[crashing boom]

Sydney:Jen, I'm over here!
Josh:Don't let her kiss David!
other Josh:Who was that?
Sydney:I thought I'd lost you!
Jennifer:Josh, this is my room from Saint Anthony's.
Josh:Yeah, that's fine!
But what lock the room has?
Vincent Gretchin: Sydney, please let me in!
It's your Mommy!
Jennifer:Mommy's not coming here.
Sydney:See, told you!
Mom!
Josh:Aah! Jen, protect Sydney!
[screaming]
[booming explosions]
[screaming]
[walls creaking]
Jennifer:Listen to me Sydney.
I know how hard it is to let go.
Believe me, I know.
Sydney:Stop saying that!
Jennifer:I know, I'm sorry.
But I know what it's like.
Listen I lost my mom a long time ago and it took me
a long time to learn how to let go and just accept it.
You shouldn't have to do this at your age.
[Josh grunting]
But you can't change what's happened!
[boom]
[Josh shrieks]
[water roaring]
Sydney:No, it's okay.
It's all going to be okay, you're right.
I get it now.
I see it.
I know that Mommy's not coming back, okay?
And I know that Amber's not coming back either.
Jennifer:But Sydney none of this is real!
Sydney:I know, but what I did was real.
Josh:Help!
Jennifer:We'll find a way out!
Sydney:No, it'll be fine.
Everything is going to be okay.
I promise.
[Josh pounding and grunting]
Josh:God damn it!
Jennifer:Sydney please!
Sydney:Hey, listen to me.
Everything is fine, okay?
Trust me.
Sydney:You stay down here now.
Jennifer:No!!
[water booming]
[screaming]
