These are the user uploaded subtitles that are being translated: 1 00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:18,000 Monsignor's 2 00:00:18,000 --> 00:00:43,000 Okay, we are now in hour 22 of Learn in the Bible 24 Hours, and we're going to address 3 00:00:43,000 --> 00:00:49,000 the first three chapters of the book of Revelation. And for a number of reasons that will become 4 00:00:49,000 --> 00:00:56,000 evident, I think this is the high ground of the Bible in some respects, and it's certainly the 5 00:00:56,000 --> 00:01:00,000 book of Revelation is one of the favorite books of anyone that takes the Bible seriously, and secondly 6 00:01:01,000 --> 00:01:08,000 it is the most relevant parts of the book of Revelation for you and me is the chapters 2 and 3. 7 00:01:08,000 --> 00:01:13,000 So this is going to be fun stuff as we go here. We've gone through the whole New Testament of 8 00:01:13,000 --> 00:01:19,000 course, what I call the five Gospels using Luke volume 1 and volume 2, acts as the volume 2 so 9 00:01:19,000 --> 00:01:23,000 to speak. We went through the 13 epistles that are scribed to Paul, we went through the eight 10 00:01:23,000 --> 00:01:30,000 epistles that are the so-called Jewish Christian epistles, but now we come to that book which among 11 00:01:30,000 --> 00:01:35,000 all the other books ties it all together. Everything that started in Genesis is wrapped up in the 12 00:01:35,000 --> 00:01:39,000 book of Revelation. In fact, one of the most astonishing discoveries that I hope you're in the 13 00:01:39,000 --> 00:01:48,000 process of making as we do these things is to recognize, discover the unity of the entire package. 14 00:01:48,000 --> 00:01:55,000 66 books penned by 40 guys over virtually 2,000 years, and yet it's integrated in its design. 15 00:01:55,000 --> 00:02:00,000 There are aspects throughout the book that anticipate what needs to be there in order for 16 00:02:00,000 --> 00:02:06,000 Revelation to make sense. And so here we go. It's interesting that the Old Testament of course, 17 00:02:06,000 --> 00:02:12,000 Christ appears in prophecy. In the Gospels, Christ appears in history. In the book of Acts, 18 00:02:12,000 --> 00:02:17,000 Christ appears in the church. And of course in the epistles, we see Christ in actual experience. 19 00:02:18,000 --> 00:02:21,000 And then of course in the apocalypse, we're going to see Christ coming in glory. 20 00:02:22,000 --> 00:02:27,000 So in a sense, the Old Testament said behold, he comes, the Gospel say behold, he dies. 21 00:02:28,000 --> 00:02:36,000 Access behold, he lives. Pissles behold, he saves. And we're going to see behold, he reigns. Christ is 22 00:02:36,000 --> 00:02:40,000 actually going to reign in this book. Anyone that wants to deny that has huge problems with 23 00:02:40,000 --> 00:02:46,000 Revelation, that's why many pastors try to avoid the book because it confronts some issues they're 24 00:02:46,000 --> 00:02:52,000 not prepared to deal with. I want you to first notice the name of the book. It's a singular, 25 00:02:52,000 --> 00:02:59,000 not plural. You often, for some reason, you always see people say revelations. Whenever you hear 26 00:02:59,000 --> 00:03:03,000 that s, when you see it as a plural, you know immediately they have never taken a study of the book. 27 00:03:05,000 --> 00:03:09,000 All they know is somehow a collection of visions, so that's why they think it's plural. No, 28 00:03:09,000 --> 00:03:14,000 it's singular. It is the unveiling. The word Revelation, the apocalypse means the unveiling. 29 00:03:15,000 --> 00:03:22,000 And it is the consummation of all things. It's the only book in the Bible that has the 30 00:03:22,000 --> 00:03:27,000 audacity to say, read me, I'm special. No other book in the Bible has the 31 00:03:28,000 --> 00:03:33,000 hutzpah, if I can use the Jewish term, to say, read me, I'm better than the other guys. 32 00:03:34,000 --> 00:03:38,000 Lots of places in the Bible that says, search the scriptures, study the word of God. All those 33 00:03:39,000 --> 00:03:45,000 the phrase always embrace the whole thing. This is the only book that says, hey, read me, and you 34 00:03:45,000 --> 00:03:49,000 are entitled to a very special blessing. So if you're really in the mood for a blessing, 35 00:03:50,000 --> 00:03:53,000 no matter how down you are, no matter what you're doing, if you would need just one of those days, 36 00:03:53,000 --> 00:03:57,000 you need a blessing. Stop, read the book of Revelation. It doesn't take long. It's not a big deal. 37 00:03:57,000 --> 00:04:04,000 And watch what happens. Now, one of the reasons the book is such a mystery to so many is because 38 00:04:04,000 --> 00:04:10,000 they haven't done their homework. Most Christians don't know their Old Testament. The book of Revelation 39 00:04:10,000 --> 00:04:20,000 consists of 404 verses that include allusions to over 800 items from the Old Testament. 40 00:04:21,000 --> 00:04:27,000 In other words, two to one. Two to one. For every verse in Revelation, there's in effect 41 00:04:27,000 --> 00:04:33,000 two allusions to the Old Testament. So if the book seems strange to our ears, it's because we 42 00:04:33,000 --> 00:04:37,000 haven't spent time in the Old Testament. The more you know your Old Testament, the more comfortable 43 00:04:37,000 --> 00:04:46,000 this book reads. And it is, of course, the climax of God's plan for man. And that's exciting 44 00:04:46,000 --> 00:04:50,000 for lots of reasons. Let's just take a look at what is. Let's read just the first sentence. 45 00:04:51,000 --> 00:04:59,000 The Revelation singular of Jesus Christ. What is it revealing? Jesus Christ. 46 00:04:59,000 --> 00:05:06,000 Which God gave unto him. Whoops. Wait a minute. Time out. God gave this to whom? 47 00:05:08,000 --> 00:05:15,000 Jesus. If this sounds a little strange, look who the address he is. The Revelation of Jesus Christ, 48 00:05:15,000 --> 00:05:22,000 which God gave unto him. There was a time in Mark 13 verse 32, no man owes a name on an hour, 49 00:05:22,000 --> 00:05:28,000 not the end of the heaven, not the Son, but the Father only. Strange verse. At least at that time, 50 00:05:28,000 --> 00:05:32,000 at that moment, the Father knew when Jesus was coming back, he was the only one that did. 51 00:05:33,000 --> 00:05:38,000 Whoa, we're on dangerous ground here. You mean there's things the Father knew the Son didn't? 52 00:05:38,000 --> 00:05:42,000 I thought they all knew all things. Yeah, I guess so. That's part of the mystery. 53 00:05:43,000 --> 00:05:49,000 It could be that he didn't then he knows now. I don't know that. I'm not going to 54 00:05:49,000 --> 00:05:53,000 quibble with those things, but I just highlight to put your own consideration. The Revelation of 55 00:05:53,000 --> 00:05:59,000 Jesus Christ, which God gave unto him. Why? To show unto his servants things which must 56 00:05:59,000 --> 00:06:05,000 shortly come the past. That word shortly is actually an taxi in the Greek. It's the word from which 57 00:06:05,000 --> 00:06:13,000 we get the word tachometer. Shortly or quickly in the sense of speedily. It doesn't mean it's going 58 00:06:13,000 --> 00:06:16,000 to happen the day after tomorrow. It means when these things start happening, they're going to 59 00:06:16,000 --> 00:06:22,000 follow tightly. That's really what the Greek implies. The Revelation of Jesus Christ, 60 00:06:22,000 --> 00:06:25,000 which God gave him to show unto his servants things which must shortly come the past. 61 00:06:25,000 --> 00:06:33,000 And he sent and signified it, rendered it into signs. Information signers would say he rendered 62 00:06:33,000 --> 00:06:40,000 into semimes, signs, idioms, whatever. He sent and signified it by his angel or messenger unto his 63 00:06:40,000 --> 00:06:47,000 servant John, who bear record of the word of God and of the testimony of Jesus Christ, and of all 64 00:06:47,000 --> 00:06:55,000 things that he saw, that he saw. Not that he thought or dreamed up. These were things that 65 00:06:55,000 --> 00:07:00,000 he wrote down that what he saw. So we're going to see visions. We're going to see many idioms, 66 00:07:00,000 --> 00:07:06,000 strange ones perhaps, but these are things that were visual and they're not necessarily just 67 00:07:06,000 --> 00:07:11,000 three-dimensional, but we'll move on. Verse three is the verse you want to claim tonight. 68 00:07:12,000 --> 00:07:17,000 Blessed is he that readeth and they that hear. The words of this prophecy and keep those things 69 00:07:17,000 --> 00:07:24,000 which are written therein for that time is at hand. Praise God. I'm reading and you're listening, 70 00:07:24,000 --> 00:07:31,000 so we're both in good shape. That doesn't mean everything I say is correct. You've got to check 71 00:07:31,000 --> 00:07:36,000 that out, but it does mean that if we do this with sincerity and commitment that blessing is in 72 00:07:36,000 --> 00:07:40,000 store. Blessed is he that readeth and they that hear the words of this prophecy, not history, 73 00:07:40,000 --> 00:07:47,000 prophecy. Now it continues. John, now it reads like a memo, corporate memo. John is two of the 74 00:07:47,000 --> 00:07:53,000 seven churches which are in Asia. Grace beyond you in peace from him, which is which was and which is 75 00:07:53,000 --> 00:07:57,000 to come. And from the seven spirits which are before us thrown and from Jesus Christ, 76 00:07:57,000 --> 00:08:01,000 who is the faithful witness, the first begotten of the dead and the prince of the kings of the 77 00:08:01,000 --> 00:08:09,000 earth. So John is going to put up in front of this document a cover letter and he's addressing this 78 00:08:09,000 --> 00:08:12,000 cover letter to seven churches. We're going to get into those seven churches when we get to the 79 00:08:12,000 --> 00:08:18,000 next chapter. But this sort of front end cover note, if you will. John to the seven churches which are 80 00:08:18,000 --> 00:08:22,000 in Asia. The word Asia there doesn't mean Asia is United, but it's the Roman province of Asia, 81 00:08:22,000 --> 00:08:28,000 which today is that region that we generally associate with Turkey, if you will, the Roman 82 00:08:28,000 --> 00:08:34,000 province of Asia. Grace beyond you in peace from him. Now we have a strange set of addresses, 83 00:08:35,000 --> 00:08:41,000 him which is which was and which is to come. Who is that? God the Father. And from the seven 84 00:08:41,000 --> 00:08:44,000 spirituals who are before us thrown and from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, 85 00:08:44,000 --> 00:08:48,000 the first begotten of the dead and the prince of the kings of the earth. Okay, with this first guy, 86 00:08:48,000 --> 00:08:53,000 him which is which was and which is to come, could mean any of several things, Yehovah if you will 87 00:08:53,000 --> 00:08:59,000 or Yave or Yotay, Vavhe, however you want to say it, or God the Father, that's a possibility. 88 00:09:00,000 --> 00:09:05,000 And then we have, and Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, the first begotten of the dead 89 00:09:05,000 --> 00:09:10,000 and the prince of the kings of the earth. Great. But we have this strange phrase between these two, 90 00:09:11,000 --> 00:09:15,000 the seven spirits which are before us thrown. If you're a New Testament reader, that sounds 91 00:09:15,000 --> 00:09:21,000 strange to your ears. If you know your Old Testament, who is it talking about? The Holy Spirit. 92 00:09:21,000 --> 00:09:28,000 So you have the Trinity here. Grace to unto you in peace from him which is and which was and 93 00:09:28,000 --> 00:09:32,000 which is to come. I'll call that the Father. From the seven spiritual jar before us thrown, 94 00:09:32,000 --> 00:09:37,000 I'll explain that in the next slide. And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, 95 00:09:37,000 --> 00:09:40,000 the first begotten of the dead and the prince of the kings of the earth. I want you to notice 96 00:09:40,000 --> 00:09:44,000 here in Jesus Christ, there's three labels, faithful witness. First begotten of the dead, 97 00:09:44,000 --> 00:09:50,000 prince of the kings of the earth. You'll discover that in chapter one, there are 24 titles of Jesus 98 00:09:50,000 --> 00:09:55,000 Christ and they're all used as identities somewhere else in the book. So if you're a computer 99 00:09:55,000 --> 00:10:01,000 programmer, this is like the data division. These are the data definitions. So if Jesus Christ is 100 00:10:01,000 --> 00:10:06,000 the faithful witness, if later on I'm talking about the faithful witness, you don't want to talk 101 00:10:06,000 --> 00:10:10,000 about it. You see, it's linkages. They're being set up here. This is the book of Revelation, 102 00:10:10,000 --> 00:10:18,000 it's obviously written by a computer programmer. In Isaiah chapter 11 verse 2, there's a passage 103 00:10:18,000 --> 00:10:23,000 that wouldn't be familiar to your ears unless you have studied Isaiah 11. But it's very speaks 104 00:10:23,000 --> 00:10:28,000 of the spirit of Yehovah or YAHiveah, he shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom, the spirit of 105 00:10:28,000 --> 00:10:31,000 understanding, the spirit of counsel, the spirit of might, the spirit of knowledge and the spirit of 106 00:10:31,000 --> 00:10:37,000 the fear of the Lord. This is the sevenfold spirit of the term that you and I would call the Holy Spirit. 107 00:10:38,000 --> 00:10:46,000 He's a he, it's a person. And that's what really is in view. So we really have here a salutation by 108 00:10:46,000 --> 00:10:52,000 John that comes from the Trinity in a form that you're probably not familiar with. But let's move on. 109 00:10:53,000 --> 00:10:58,000 See, we have actually seven spirits listed here. This is the sevenfold spirit of what you and I would 110 00:10:58,000 --> 00:11:04,000 lump together as the Holy Spirit. And he continues, and unto him that loved us and washed us from 111 00:11:04,000 --> 00:11:11,000 our sins in his own blood and hath made us kings and priests unto God and his father to him be 112 00:11:11,000 --> 00:11:18,000 glory and dominion forever and ever amen. Whoo, John can sure pen it. But I want you to know 113 00:11:18,000 --> 00:11:25,000 this interesting phrase here. He hath made us what? Kings and priests, that is very non-lavitical. 114 00:11:26,000 --> 00:11:31,000 The only people there, kings and priests, was Melchizedek, Jesus Christ, and who else? 115 00:11:33,000 --> 00:11:37,000 You and me, we're in the church because of this verse right here. We're going to encounter 24 116 00:11:37,000 --> 00:11:41,000 elders. It's going to be only, it's important to understand who the 24 elders are. We'll get to 117 00:11:41,000 --> 00:11:45,000 there, we'll deal with that when we get there. In chapter one, we're not going to go through the 118 00:11:45,000 --> 00:11:52,000 whole thing, we'll do that separately. But in the vision of chapter one has seven key features. 119 00:11:52,000 --> 00:11:57,000 The hair on his head, his eyes, the hair of his head is the same as the one in Daniel 7, 120 00:11:57,000 --> 00:12:01,000 his eyes, which shows up in Hebrews chapter one and four, like a flame of fire, 121 00:12:02,000 --> 00:12:06,000 his first green is also in Malachi, his feet, which is a symbol of the walk, 122 00:12:06,000 --> 00:12:13,000 our brass, which speaks of judgment. Remember the brazen serpent in Numbers 21? His voices as of 123 00:12:13,000 --> 00:12:18,000 many waters as equal uses that phrase several times in chapter one and chapter 43. Daniel uses 124 00:12:18,000 --> 00:12:25,000 that phrase in chapter 10. These are idioms that speak of Jesus Christ, but from the Old Testament 125 00:12:25,000 --> 00:12:29,000 labeling, if you will, and there's seven features. His right hand are seven stars, 126 00:12:31,000 --> 00:12:35,000 yet he's also in the, he has seven stars in his hand, yet he's in the midst of the lab stands, 127 00:12:35,000 --> 00:12:39,000 so the strange double meaning here. He's in the midst and yet we're in his hand. 128 00:12:40,000 --> 00:12:44,000 See, we are in his hand in one sense, and yet he's also in the midst of us. 129 00:12:44,000 --> 00:12:48,000 Sounds contradictory and geometrically it would be, but idiomatically it's not. 130 00:12:48,000 --> 00:12:53,000 You with me? His auto's mouth comes a two-edged sword. Hebrews does that, Ephesians, 131 00:12:53,000 --> 00:12:59,000 Isaiah 49, so forth. He judges the unbeliever in John 12 by his mouth. Earth is smitten in Isaiah 132 00:12:59,000 --> 00:13:04,000 11 by his mouth. The Antichrist is consumed in 2nd Thessalonians by his mouth. And his countenance 133 00:13:04,000 --> 00:13:10,000 is as the sun, as Matthew 17 at the Transfiguration demonstrates. So there are these seven features 134 00:13:11,000 --> 00:13:16,000 of Jesus Christ as he shows up in chapter 1. This is John seeing the vision of Christ, 135 00:13:16,000 --> 00:13:21,000 and this is his recording of that vision using mostly idioms from the Old Testament. 136 00:13:24,000 --> 00:13:30,000 Then we get to verse 19. The book of Revelation is very generous to us because it gives us the 137 00:13:30,000 --> 00:13:34,000 outline of the book. Most books, when you sit down to study them, you have to figure out the 138 00:13:34,000 --> 00:13:37,000 outline is. That's your first step to try to understand the book. Revelation gives it for you. 139 00:13:37,000 --> 00:13:44,000 In verse 19, John has said, told, write the things which thou hast seen, the things which are, 140 00:13:45,000 --> 00:13:51,000 and the things which shall be metatauta hereafter or after these things. These are three categories. 141 00:13:52,000 --> 00:13:58,000 The vision of Christ in chapter 1 are the things which John you have seen at this point, right? 142 00:13:58,000 --> 00:14:03,000 The things which are, what exists at that moment, these seven churches that are going to be so 143 00:14:03,000 --> 00:14:11,000 upon it, the next two chapters. And then the things which shall be hereafter, metatauta, is the Greek 144 00:14:11,000 --> 00:14:18,000 term, which follows after the churches. Chapter 4, verse 1 starts out with the words metatauta 145 00:14:18,000 --> 00:14:23,000 after these things. So verse 19 breaks the book down into the three parts. Chapter 1, 146 00:14:23,000 --> 00:14:28,000 which you've just seen, chapters 2 and 3 that we're going to deal with shortly, 147 00:14:29,000 --> 00:14:33,000 and then the rest of the book from chapter 4 on, we'll deal with that in our next session. 148 00:14:34,000 --> 00:14:42,000 We're going to focus now on chapters 2 and 3, which are among the most fascinating in the book. 149 00:14:42,000 --> 00:14:45,000 They're usually overlooked by many people skimming through the book. They're probably, 150 00:14:45,000 --> 00:14:51,000 and I've studied the book for 50 years, the most fascinating part of the book, in many respects, 151 00:14:51,000 --> 00:14:53,000 chapters 2 and 3. There's more stuff hidden there that people miss. 152 00:14:55,000 --> 00:14:59,000 Anyway, continuing chapter 1 for a moment, the mystery of the seven stars which thou 153 00:14:59,000 --> 00:15:04,000 sawest in my right hand are the seven golden lampstands. Okay, Jesus themselves, the book all 154 00:15:04,000 --> 00:15:11,000 the way through for the most part identifies the idioms for you. These lampstands, translated 155 00:15:11,000 --> 00:15:15,000 candlesticks in the old King James, but fine, the mystery of the seven stars which thou sawest 156 00:15:15,000 --> 00:15:20,000 my right hand and the seven golden lampstands, colon. The seven stars are the messengers or angels 157 00:15:20,000 --> 00:15:25,000 of the seven churches. The seven lampstands which thou sawest are the seven churches. 158 00:15:26,000 --> 00:15:33,000 Are we together? I want you to notice that these lampstands in chapter 2 and 3, 159 00:15:35,000 --> 00:15:41,000 he's among them. They're on the earth. Chapter 4, you'll discover they're in heaven. 160 00:15:41,000 --> 00:15:47,000 Notice those things as we go. Okay, the seventh church is these are the things that are. 161 00:15:47,000 --> 00:15:53,000 The first question is why these seven? As you go through this list of seven, they're strange 162 00:15:53,000 --> 00:16:01,000 names. Ephesus is familiar to us, but Smyrna, Pergamos, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia, 163 00:16:01,000 --> 00:16:08,000 Laodicea, why those seven churches? Why those seven? Why did Jesus write those? What happened to 164 00:16:08,000 --> 00:16:12,000 the church in Jerusalem? What about the church in Antioch that was the headquarters for the 165 00:16:12,000 --> 00:16:17,000 Gentile outreach? What about a conium, Lystra, Derby, all these churches you read about next? 166 00:16:17,000 --> 00:16:23,000 They're not here. Why these seven? You need to figure that out. Furthermore, 167 00:16:24,000 --> 00:16:29,000 something else that's interesting, each of the seven letters has a phrase in it. There's one 168 00:16:29,000 --> 00:16:35,000 phrase that's in common to all seven letters. Each letter has this peculiar little code word. 169 00:16:35,000 --> 00:16:39,000 He, the half an ear, let him hear what the spirit says to the churches. 170 00:16:39,000 --> 00:16:47,000 It may surprise you that these seven letters have at least four levels of meaning, 171 00:16:48,000 --> 00:16:54,000 four levels of meaning, levels of application. First of all, they really were local churches. 172 00:16:58,000 --> 00:17:04,000 This strange phrase that we see in the seven letters occurs by the way seven times elsewhere 173 00:17:04,000 --> 00:17:09,000 in the New Testament. An interesting exercise to track down every other place that occurs 174 00:17:10,000 --> 00:17:15,000 seven times, not by accident. But let's not go too far if you want to never make it here. 175 00:17:16,000 --> 00:17:25,000 But they really were real churches. So William Ramsey with great effort over many years researched 176 00:17:25,000 --> 00:17:30,000 these seven churches and discovered they really were churches. They really had these kinds of 177 00:17:30,000 --> 00:17:36,000 problems. So there is a practical, immediate, local reason for the letter. Good. Okay. 178 00:17:37,000 --> 00:17:41,000 There are actual churches. But there's another level, Admonitory. You notice what this says, 179 00:17:41,000 --> 00:17:46,000 he that half an ear, let him hear what the spirit says to the church says. He doesn't say, listen 180 00:17:46,000 --> 00:17:51,000 to the church, listen to the letter that applies to your church. He expects anybody that had, 181 00:17:53,000 --> 00:17:56,000 this is for all the churches are to read all the letters. 182 00:17:56,000 --> 00:18:01,000 Hear what the spirit says to the churches. If you're in Philadelphia, you want to know what the 183 00:18:01,000 --> 00:18:07,000 spirit said to Laodicea, etc. You follow me? So it's Admonitory. There's advice here for churches 184 00:18:07,000 --> 00:18:14,000 in their leadership. We're together? Okay. He that half an ear, how many of you in the room have 185 00:18:14,000 --> 00:18:20,000 an earlobe? Can I see a show of hands? Okay. If your hand is up, it's written to you. It's personal. 186 00:18:21,000 --> 00:18:26,000 He that half an ear, let him hear what the spirit says to the churches. So this is also, 187 00:18:27,000 --> 00:18:33,000 it applies, it applied locally, historically. It applied as Admonition to churches in general. 188 00:18:33,000 --> 00:18:37,000 It also applies to you personally to understand the dilemma and the solution 189 00:18:38,000 --> 00:18:43,000 each of these seven letters. Well, that's all pretty straightforward stuff. Let me show you the 190 00:18:43,000 --> 00:18:51,000 surprise. This also, these letters lay out a history of the church. What's, this is the most 191 00:18:51,000 --> 00:18:58,000 amazing part of these letters. And if they were in any other order, this wouldn't happen. In the 192 00:18:58,000 --> 00:19:04,000 order they're in, once you understand the letters, it's astonishing because they lay out seven 193 00:19:04,000 --> 00:19:13,000 periods of church history with some surprising precision. Each letter has seven design elements. 194 00:19:13,000 --> 00:19:17,000 If you, when you study seven things, each one has, there's a name of a church and you'll discover 195 00:19:17,000 --> 00:19:22,000 the name of the church turns out to be significant to its message. Each church has a specific message, 196 00:19:22,000 --> 00:19:27,000 a specific theme, if you will. The name of the church turns out to be relevant to that. The title 197 00:19:27,000 --> 00:19:33,000 that Jesus Christ uses of himself is different for each letter and it's appropriate to the 198 00:19:33,000 --> 00:19:38,000 mission of that particular church or the issues that face that church. Then there's a commendation. 199 00:19:38,000 --> 00:19:43,000 Hey guys, here's your report card. Here's what you got an A in. Then there's that 200 00:19:43,000 --> 00:19:49,000 areas of concern and there's exhortation. It's like a report card. Let me tell you something 201 00:19:49,000 --> 00:19:54,000 that's really interesting about the seven letters in advance. Every church is surprised. 202 00:19:55,000 --> 00:19:59,000 The churches that thought they were doing great were doing terribly. The churches that thought 203 00:19:59,000 --> 00:20:07,000 they were doing terribly were doing great. You know, that's sobering. People like to organize 204 00:20:07,000 --> 00:20:11,000 church, you know, by watching the first century. I wouldn't do that. First century is all screwed up. 205 00:20:13,000 --> 00:20:18,000 Everybody there is surprised. If you want to, you want to design church governance, go to the 206 00:20:18,000 --> 00:20:23,000 scripture, go to the book of Acts, go to this, go to these seven letters and so forth. Anyway, 207 00:20:23,000 --> 00:20:27,000 there's seven things. I said there's a name of the church, title of Christ, accommodation, 208 00:20:27,000 --> 00:20:31,000 of concern and exhortation. And then there's a promise to the overcomer. There's a specific little 209 00:20:32,000 --> 00:20:40,000 prize for the overcomer. And the seventh element is this weird little phrase. It's almost like it's 210 00:20:40,000 --> 00:20:45,000 the close of the letter. It's sort of like a closing passage except it's not always closing. 211 00:20:46,000 --> 00:20:50,000 There's something very, that most people miss that I want to show you and I think it's very 212 00:20:50,000 --> 00:20:55,000 significant. So these are seven elements and we hear the churches. We have Ephesus, 213 00:20:55,000 --> 00:21:01,000 Merta, Pyrogma, Thyataurus, Sardis, Philadelphia, Laesia. Each one name means something and then 214 00:21:01,000 --> 00:21:06,000 we'll go through and we'll just let's just go through them here. Then each one has a title of Christ 215 00:21:06,000 --> 00:21:11,000 and so forth. Let's take the first and the letter to Ephesus. Out of the angel of the church of 216 00:21:11,000 --> 00:21:16,000 Ephesus, right? These things say of he that holdeth the seven stars in his right hand and walketh in 217 00:21:16,000 --> 00:21:25,000 the midst of the seven golden lampstands. The name Ephesus means darling. Darling. It's a term of 218 00:21:25,000 --> 00:21:31,000 courtship. These things say of he, Jesus Christ, that holdeth the seven stars in his right hand 219 00:21:31,000 --> 00:21:36,000 who walketh in the midst of the seven golden lampstands. He gives them a commendation. I know thy works. 220 00:21:36,000 --> 00:21:43,000 Oh, that's wonderful to hear, Lord. I know thy works and thy labor and thy patience and how 221 00:21:43,000 --> 00:21:47,000 thou can'ts not bear them which are evil. And thou hast tried them which say they are apostles 222 00:21:47,000 --> 00:21:52,000 and are not and has found them liars and has borne and has patience and for my namesake has 223 00:21:52,000 --> 00:22:00,000 labored and has not fainted. Ooh, we. That's A plus in that category. Done good, guys. You may recall 224 00:22:00,000 --> 00:22:05,000 in Acts chapter 20 when Paul gave his farewell address to the Ephesian elders. He warned them 225 00:22:05,000 --> 00:22:09,000 that there is going to be wolves coming among you that's going to not spare the flock. Very 226 00:22:09,000 --> 00:22:15,000 warned about false teachers and so forth. Apparently Paul's advice was heeded. They apparently were 227 00:22:15,000 --> 00:22:20,000 terrific. They did not allow false doctrine. They tried them which they, their apostles, 228 00:22:20,000 --> 00:22:24,000 are not and found them liars. They did a good job with doctrine. They were sharp. They were 229 00:22:24,000 --> 00:22:33,000 orthodox. They were also patient. They labored, persevered, terrific. Well done, guys. Oops. Nevertheless. 230 00:22:34,000 --> 00:22:40,000 You're before your boss. Your boss is man, you've really done right. You did this, this, this, 231 00:22:40,000 --> 00:22:44,000 this. You're feeling pretty good. Your thumb goes under your suspenders or whatever. 232 00:22:45,000 --> 00:22:52,000 Then your boss says, nevertheless, I mean, that's deflating. Pink slipped in his right hand. I mean, 233 00:22:52,000 --> 00:22:57,000 you just see it coming, right? Nevertheless, heavy word right here. Jesus, saying to them, 234 00:22:57,000 --> 00:23:03,000 after all this good stuff, he says, nevertheless, I have someone against thee because thou hast 235 00:23:03,000 --> 00:23:14,000 what? Left thy first love. Heavy stuff. They were so busy on the business of the king. 236 00:23:15,000 --> 00:23:22,000 They had no time for the king. Are you so busy in ministry helping the poor doing all the stuff 237 00:23:23,000 --> 00:23:28,000 that you don't have time for personal devotions? Miss the real point. 238 00:23:28,000 --> 00:23:35,000 So he goes on, remember therefore, from Winston Art fallen and repent and do the first works, 239 00:23:35,000 --> 00:23:39,000 or else I will come into thee quickly and will remove thy lampstand out of his place, 240 00:23:39,000 --> 00:23:47,000 except thou repent. Where is Ephesus? Where is their lampstand today? It's a great place to visit 241 00:23:47,000 --> 00:23:52,000 because they're elaborate ruins. One of the best of the seven churches to visit, it's really worth 242 00:23:52,000 --> 00:23:59,000 doing. It's incredible. But it's ruins. The lampstand isn't there anymore. 243 00:24:01,000 --> 00:24:05,000 Anyways, but this thou hast, that thou hatest the deeds of the nickel leons, which I also hate. 244 00:24:05,000 --> 00:24:08,000 This is a point of a lot of different scholars have different, who are the nickel leons? 245 00:24:09,000 --> 00:24:15,000 There are at least two theories. Some books suggest that there was a first century sect 246 00:24:16,000 --> 00:24:20,000 called the nickel leons that abused the liberty in Christ after it's expected of out of a guy, 247 00:24:20,000 --> 00:24:28,000 by the name of the man Nicholas, who was one of the seven that was chosen to administer to the 248 00:24:28,000 --> 00:24:34,000 poor in Jerusalem in Acts chapter 6. And some feel that he founded a sect, and that's really what 249 00:24:34,000 --> 00:24:41,000 somehow it was involving. That may be true. Some people hold that view. I don't. I suspect 250 00:24:41,000 --> 00:24:46,000 something different. I think it's an untranslated word. The word negate means to conquer, overcome, 251 00:24:46,000 --> 00:24:54,000 or rule. And the word laity, Allahos, laity means laity, or people. The word, the nickel 252 00:24:54,000 --> 00:25:00,000 leons, the term implies conquering or ruling over the people. I believe what was emerging here, 253 00:25:00,000 --> 00:25:07,000 that Jesus did not like, was the whole concept of the clergy ruling over the laity. Jesus gave us 254 00:25:07,000 --> 00:25:16,000 our org chart when he dealt with the washing of the feet, you may recall, in John 13. 255 00:25:16,000 --> 00:25:21,000 Jesus told us how we should be organized. Let's see if I'm going to be the servant of all. 256 00:25:23,000 --> 00:25:26,000 See, I think the nickel leons were those that were using their clergyical stature 257 00:25:28,000 --> 00:25:34,000 or position to rule over the laity. And I don't think that was God's plan. I don't see any of that 258 00:25:34,000 --> 00:25:39,000 in the Scripture. And having some senior elders do teaching, that's fine. But it doesn't 259 00:25:39,000 --> 00:25:42,000 say they rule over the people. He had deacons to help. And there's a whole different concept 260 00:25:43,000 --> 00:25:49,000 suggested. I think the formalism that we see in some denominations, I think, is nickel letonism. 261 00:25:49,000 --> 00:25:53,000 That's just my personal view. Anyway, then we come to this then because he either 262 00:25:53,000 --> 00:25:57,000 have an eerlingum here, what the Spirit says to the churches. And then we have the promise of 263 00:25:57,000 --> 00:26:01,000 the overcomer to him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst 264 00:26:01,000 --> 00:26:05,000 of the paradise of God. Okay, so there's this unique promise to the overcomer. 265 00:26:07,000 --> 00:26:13,000 I want you to notice that this he to have an ear phrase which closes the letter, we have the 266 00:26:13,000 --> 00:26:20,000 promise of the overcomer as a postscript, like a p.s. Follow me? The first three letters have 267 00:26:20,000 --> 00:26:23,000 that design. The last four are different. I'll come to that when we get there. But just I 268 00:26:23,000 --> 00:26:26,000 want you to notice it here as we go through here. He to have an eerlingum here with the 269 00:26:26,000 --> 00:26:31,000 Spirit says, churches. And then as a postscript, we have the promise to the overcomer. Each 270 00:26:31,000 --> 00:26:35,000 promise of the overcomer is unique in each letter. Let's go to the next letter, the letter to Smirna. 271 00:26:36,000 --> 00:26:44,000 The word Smirna is a synonym for mr. Mr is an embalming ointment. The word mr suggests death. 272 00:26:46,000 --> 00:26:51,000 When the Magi visited Bethlehem, they brought three gifts. There weren't three Magi, 273 00:26:51,000 --> 00:26:56,000 they're more than that, but they were three gifts. Gold, frankincense and 274 00:26:56,000 --> 00:27:03,000 mr. Mr. Good. In the millennium, Isaiah tells us, they're going to bring the Lord gifts. 275 00:27:04,000 --> 00:27:14,000 They're going to bring them gold and frankincense. No mr. No more mr. Why? Because the Magi were 276 00:27:14,000 --> 00:27:21,000 prophesying his death. The millennium, his death is once and for all behind him. Interesting. I 277 00:27:21,000 --> 00:27:25,000 want you to notice these things because it demonstrates the integrity of design of the Scripture. But 278 00:27:25,000 --> 00:27:31,000 in any case, the church in Smirna speaks of death. These things say at the first and the last, 279 00:27:31,000 --> 00:27:37,000 which was dead and is alive. Notice the very title Jesus chooses of himself is the one that 280 00:27:37,000 --> 00:27:42,000 would be the most encouraging to those that were facing death and persecution. These things say 281 00:27:42,000 --> 00:27:48,000 at the first and the last, which was dead and is alive. I know thy works in tribulation and poverty, 282 00:27:48,000 --> 00:27:53,000 but thou art rich. And I know the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews and are not, 283 00:27:53,000 --> 00:28:01,000 but are the synagogue of Satan. It's interesting that I think the Smirna listeners were surprised. 284 00:28:02,000 --> 00:28:06,000 They're doing better than they thought they were. You see, you thought I know your works 285 00:28:06,000 --> 00:28:11,000 in tribulation and poverty. I know that. But they tells them a little footnote, but you are rich. 286 00:28:12,000 --> 00:28:17,000 Really? Yeah. And I know the blasphemy of them that say they are Jews and are not, but are of the 287 00:28:17,000 --> 00:28:23,000 synagogue of Satan. I am very concerned when I hear people feel that the church replaces Israel. 288 00:28:23,000 --> 00:28:29,000 Because they are saying they are Jews and are not. If that's what Jesus is talking about, boy, 289 00:28:29,000 --> 00:28:34,000 I don't want to trade places with them. Let's move on. Then there is an exhortation. 290 00:28:37,000 --> 00:28:41,000 I want you to notice something is missing. Did you notice there was no concern? There is a 291 00:28:41,000 --> 00:28:48,000 commendation and there is an exhortation, some encouragement. But there is no common, this is 292 00:28:48,000 --> 00:28:55,000 one of the two letters that has nothing bad said about it. But Jesus goes on, 293 00:28:55,000 --> 00:28:58,000 so fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer, behold the devil shall cast some of you 294 00:28:58,000 --> 00:29:04,000 into prison that you may be tried. And ye shall have tribulation ten days. Be thou faithful to 295 00:29:04,000 --> 00:29:09,000 death, and I will give thee a crown of life. He that hath an earled in here with the Spirit 296 00:29:09,000 --> 00:29:12,000 says of the churches, and then we again have a postscript. He that overcometh shall not be 297 00:29:12,000 --> 00:29:19,000 heard of the second death. You see, if you are born twice, you die once. If you are only born 298 00:29:19,000 --> 00:29:25,000 once, you die twice. Let's do two on that one. But I want you to notice that the promise to 299 00:29:25,000 --> 00:29:30,000 overcome is a postscript. How interesting, strange stuff. Let's, ten days, it's interesting that 300 00:29:30,000 --> 00:29:36,000 the persecutions of the church scholars have suggested that it came in ten specific waves. 301 00:29:37,000 --> 00:29:45,000 Nero, the mission who was, that's where John was exiled. And Trajan had Ignatius burned at the stake. 302 00:29:47,000 --> 00:29:52,000 Nero is the one that had Peter beheaded. Excuse me, Paul beheaded and Peter crucified upside down. 303 00:29:53,000 --> 00:30:02,000 And the ten days cover about 250 years actually. Trajan had Ignatius burned at the stake. Marcus 304 00:30:02,000 --> 00:30:10,000 Aurelius had polycop, martyred, bishop of, bishop of Smyrna. And Severus had 305 00:30:12,000 --> 00:30:18,000 Erenaeus, one of the early church fathers, killed. Maximus killed Ursala and Hippolytus. And 306 00:30:19,000 --> 00:30:24,000 the occlation was the worst of all of them. But ten days, interestingly enough. 307 00:30:25,000 --> 00:30:30,000 Let's go on to the next one. The letter to Pergamus. The word Pergamus, you know what big 308 00:30:30,000 --> 00:30:35,000 of me means? That's two marriage, double marriage, right? Polygamy is multiple marriages, right? 309 00:30:36,000 --> 00:30:41,000 Pergamus is a mixed marriage, an unfavorable marriage, like a perversion or whatever. 310 00:30:42,000 --> 00:30:47,000 Under the angel of the church in Pergamus, right? These things say of he which hath the sharp 311 00:30:47,000 --> 00:30:53,000 sword with two edges. Jesus is talking about his weaponry here. What's the sharp sword with two 312 00:30:53,000 --> 00:31:01,000 edges? What is it? The word of God. Do you betcha? The remedy for this church is the word of God. 313 00:31:02,000 --> 00:31:07,000 Jesus goes on, I know thy works and where thou dwellest, even where Satan's seat is. 314 00:31:08,000 --> 00:31:13,000 And thou holdest fast my name and hast not denied my faith. Even in those days where Antipas was 315 00:31:13,000 --> 00:31:16,000 my faithful martyr who was slain among you where Satan dwelleth. 316 00:31:17,000 --> 00:31:22,000 I mean, that sounds like it, but that's the good news. Let's get to the bad news. 317 00:31:23,000 --> 00:31:28,000 But I have a few things against thee because thou hast their them that hold the doctrine of 318 00:31:28,000 --> 00:31:32,000 Balaam who talked Balaak to cast a stumbling block before the children of Israel to eat 319 00:31:32,000 --> 00:31:38,000 things sacrificed unto idols and to commit fornication. Now to get these letters, 320 00:31:38,000 --> 00:31:42,000 you have to know your Old Testament. Who on earth was what was the doctrine of Balaam? What 321 00:31:42,000 --> 00:31:47,000 was all that about? Balaam was a prophet that was hired by Balaak, the enemy of Israel. 322 00:31:47,000 --> 00:31:53,000 How do I beat these people? And Balaam knew that the way, the only way this king could 323 00:31:54,000 --> 00:32:02,000 defeat Israel is for Israel to be out of favor with God. So Balaam counsels Balaak to get as good-looking 324 00:32:02,000 --> 00:32:08,000 gals along the fringe of the camp and get these guys into fornication with these pagan gals. 325 00:32:08,000 --> 00:32:17,000 And if you do that, Balaak, God's head will turn against Israel and you'll win. So Balaak is giving, 326 00:32:18,000 --> 00:32:24,000 Balaam is giving Balaak the doctrine that will put a stumbling block before Israel. 327 00:32:25,000 --> 00:32:31,000 And so Jesus is making an analogy here between that and the situation in Pergamos, where they're 328 00:32:31,000 --> 00:32:36,000 mixing idolatry. They're faithful on the one hand and yet they're mixing idolatry with their 329 00:32:36,000 --> 00:32:41,000 worship. They're marrying the world rather than being a witness to the world. That's where the 330 00:32:41,000 --> 00:32:46,000 Pergamos aspect. So to eat things, sacrifice them to idols and to commit fornication. In other 331 00:32:46,000 --> 00:32:54,000 words, to compromise with the world. And he goes on, so has now also them that hold the doctrine 332 00:32:54,000 --> 00:33:00,000 of the Nicoleans. Which thing I hate? Previously, it was the deeds of the Nicoleans God hated. 333 00:33:00,000 --> 00:33:05,000 Now they've become the doctrine. Do you see the evolution of it going there? Okay. 334 00:33:06,000 --> 00:33:13,000 So here's the excitation, repent, or else I will come onto the quickly and will fight against them 335 00:33:13,000 --> 00:33:20,000 with the sword of my mouth. Oh, oh. Well, of course, the doctrine of Balaam is the spiritual 336 00:33:20,000 --> 00:33:26,000 and chastity marriage of the world. We also find the way of Balaam mentioned in 2 Peter. That's where 337 00:33:26,000 --> 00:33:31,000 Balaam was a hireling, making a market for his gift. There's a doctrine away in the error. These 338 00:33:31,000 --> 00:33:35,000 are three similar things and get technically slightly different. The error of Balaam, which 339 00:33:35,000 --> 00:33:40,000 is mentioned in June 11, is sacrificing eternal riches for temporal gain. So all three involve 340 00:33:40,000 --> 00:33:44,000 the same thing. They're slightly different aspects of the same actions in a sense. 341 00:33:45,000 --> 00:33:47,000 Why don't we get to the heat that hath in the ear, let them hear what the Spirit says. 342 00:33:47,000 --> 00:33:53,000 Church is an again, we have a postscript to him that overcometh I will give to eat of the hidden 343 00:33:53,000 --> 00:33:57,000 manner. And I will give him a white stone and in the stone, a new name written, which no man 344 00:33:57,000 --> 00:34:04,000 nor saving he that receiveth it. So there ends the letter to Pergamos. Let's take the Thyatira. 345 00:34:05,000 --> 00:34:13,000 Thyatira was formally named Simoramas. And Simoramas, of course, was the consort of Nimrod, 346 00:34:13,000 --> 00:34:19,000 the first dictator of the world back in Genesis 10 and 11. 347 00:34:20,000 --> 00:34:26,000 Under the angel of the church at Thyatira, these things sayeth the Son of God. 348 00:34:27,000 --> 00:34:33,000 Strange term. I mean, he's used other titles. Why so specific? We're going to find the key player 349 00:34:33,000 --> 00:34:39,000 here is a gal by the name of Jezebel who calls himself the Queen of Heaven. He's saying these 350 00:34:39,000 --> 00:34:45,000 things sayeth the Son of God in contrast to the Queen of Heaven. Follow it so far. These things 351 00:34:45,000 --> 00:34:50,000 sayeth the Son of God who hath eyes like unto a flame of fire and his feet like fine brass. 352 00:34:51,000 --> 00:34:57,000 Eyes flaming and feet like brass implies judgment coming. So this is a hostile letter, 353 00:34:58,000 --> 00:35:05,000 probably the most hostile of the bunch. I know thy works and charity and service and faith and 354 00:35:05,000 --> 00:35:11,000 patience in thy works and the last to be more than the first. That's the good part. But here's 355 00:35:11,000 --> 00:35:16,000 the concern. Notwithstanding, I have a few things against thee because thou suffers that one Jezebel, 356 00:35:17,000 --> 00:35:21,000 which called herself a prophetess to teach and seduce thy servants to commit fornication and 357 00:35:21,000 --> 00:35:26,000 eat things sacrificed unto idols. I gave her spent to repayce of her fornication and she 358 00:35:26,000 --> 00:35:32,000 prevented not behold, I will cast her into a bed and them that committed adultery with her into 359 00:35:32,000 --> 00:35:39,000 great tribulation except they repent of their deeds. So what on earth is Jezebel all about? 360 00:35:39,000 --> 00:35:44,000 He's using that term as a label. I don't know that the gal that was causing the trouble in the 361 00:35:44,000 --> 00:35:50,000 church, her name was Jezebel. He's calling her a Jezebel in effect. She may have been named Jezebel 362 00:35:50,000 --> 00:35:56,000 or he may be just drawing your awareness to the scripture, scriptural Jezebel to understand what 363 00:35:56,000 --> 00:36:00,000 was she all about. You have what with me? Let's find out a little bit about Queen Jezebel. For 364 00:36:00,000 --> 00:36:07,000 this you would turn into first Kings 21. She did a lot of things. First of all, King Ahab 365 00:36:07,000 --> 00:36:13,000 had everything he wanted. He's a king. He runs the place. But there was a little guy by the name 366 00:36:13,000 --> 00:36:19,000 of Neimoth, the name of Neimoth, Neimoth, excuse me, that had a little vineyard and he loved that 367 00:36:19,000 --> 00:36:25,000 vineyard. And Ahab wanted the vineyard and Neimoth didn't want to sell it. And King Ahab had a fit. 368 00:36:25,000 --> 00:36:31,000 He went into a pout and Jezebel says, hey, let me handle it for you. For it's Jezebel do. 369 00:36:32,000 --> 00:36:37,000 Well, she arranges an inquisition. She got some false accuser. Dequeuse Neimoth of some 370 00:36:38,000 --> 00:36:46,000 improprieties and had him put to death and took his lands in the name of the king and said, hey, 371 00:36:46,000 --> 00:36:54,000 Ahab, here's my gift to you. So false witnesses condemned, executed. And Neimoth's vineyard was 372 00:36:54,000 --> 00:37:03,000 seized for the king. Does this sound familiar regarding history where you can drive inquisitions 373 00:37:03,000 --> 00:37:11,000 to gain lands and wealth for the church? That's the parallel here. And I want you to notice God 374 00:37:11,000 --> 00:37:17,000 promised Jezebel that she would be cast into the tribulation. I'll go back to that a little later. 375 00:37:18,000 --> 00:37:22,000 Jesus continues, I will kill her children with death and all the churches shall know that I am 376 00:37:22,000 --> 00:37:26,000 he that searches the range of the arts and I will give unto every one of you according to your works. 377 00:37:28,000 --> 00:37:34,000 But unto you, I say unto the rest of Thyatara, as many as have not this doctrine and which have 378 00:37:34,000 --> 00:37:40,000 not known the depths of Satan, wow, as they speak, I will put upon you Noah the burden, 379 00:37:40,000 --> 00:37:47,000 but that which you have already hold fast till I come. Then he has the promise of the 380 00:37:47,000 --> 00:37:52,000 overcomer, he that overcomer, and keepeth my works unto the end, to him will I give power over 381 00:37:52,000 --> 00:37:56,000 the nations. See, they apparently won't power over the nations before. That was an appropriate 382 00:37:56,000 --> 00:38:00,000 then, but if they hang in there, he'll give it to him later. And he shall rule him with the rod 383 00:38:00,000 --> 00:38:05,000 of iron, his vessels of a potter shall they be broken to shivers even as I received of my father, 384 00:38:05,000 --> 00:38:10,000 and I will give him the Morning Star. He's an Athan. He that hath an ear, let him hear what the 385 00:38:10,000 --> 00:38:15,000 spirit says unto the churches. You notice now the promise of the overcomer is put in the body of 386 00:38:15,000 --> 00:38:20,000 the letter, not a postscript. Follow me? See the difference? First time we've seen that. 387 00:38:21,000 --> 00:38:27,000 Let's go to Sardis. On the angel of the church is Sardis right. These things sayeth he'd have 388 00:38:27,000 --> 00:38:33,000 the seven spirits of God and the seven stars. You know, you look at the title, you can just infer 389 00:38:33,000 --> 00:38:38,000 by now that the title gives you a clue as to what the remedy is. Whatever Sardis problem is, 390 00:38:38,000 --> 00:38:46,000 it's apparently the Holy Spirit that is the repair. Do you say, I know that works? Whoops, 391 00:38:47,000 --> 00:38:52,000 where's the commendation? Usually the commendation comes first, right? There is no commendation in 392 00:38:52,000 --> 00:38:57,000 this letter. Ooh, this hurts. Many Protestant commentators make a big thing trying to tie 393 00:38:57,000 --> 00:39:02,000 a tire to the Roman Catholic church. That's easy to do, by the way. If that's true, then Sardis is 394 00:39:02,000 --> 00:39:10,000 the Reformation. Sardis has nothing good said about it. Ooh, careful. He says, I know thy works, 395 00:39:10,000 --> 00:39:18,000 that thou hast a name, that thou livest, and art dead. Ooh, the word name echoes all through this 396 00:39:18,000 --> 00:39:26,000 letter, name, name, name. That's a synonym for that denomination. His exhortation, be watchful and 397 00:39:26,000 --> 00:39:29,000 strengthen the things which remain, that they are ready to die, for I have not found thy works 398 00:39:29,000 --> 00:39:34,000 complete or perfect before God. Remember therefore how thou hast received and heard and hold fast and 399 00:39:34,000 --> 00:39:42,000 repent. If therefore thou shalt not watch, I will come on thee as a thief. Really. Apparently, 400 00:39:42,000 --> 00:39:47,000 if you are watching, it won't be as a thief. If therefore thou shalt not watch, I will come upon 401 00:39:47,000 --> 00:39:53,000 thee as a thief, and thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee. Is the denominational 402 00:39:53,000 --> 00:40:02,000 church asleep today, prophetically? How strange. The exhortation continues. Thou hast a few names, 403 00:40:02,000 --> 00:40:06,000 even in Sardis, which have not defiled their garments, and they shall walk with me in white, 404 00:40:06,000 --> 00:40:12,000 for they are worthy. Who is they? The few names. Not everyone. Then the promise of the 405 00:40:12,000 --> 00:40:15,000 overcomer. He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white rain, and I will not blot out 406 00:40:15,000 --> 00:40:19,000 his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my father and before his angels. 407 00:40:20,000 --> 00:40:23,000 And then the closing salutation. He that hath an ear, I will hear what the Spirit says to the 408 00:40:23,000 --> 00:40:31,000 churches. Wow. Well then we get to the great one. Ask any church, and they'll tell you they're 409 00:40:31,000 --> 00:40:34,000 part of Philadelphia, of course, because it's the one that has nothing bad said about it. 410 00:40:36,000 --> 00:40:39,000 And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia, the Philadelphia by the way means brotherly love, 411 00:40:39,000 --> 00:40:43,000 as you probably know that. These things sayeth, he that is holy, he that is true, he that have 412 00:40:43,000 --> 00:40:47,000 the key of David, he that openedeth and no man shoteth and shoteth and no man openedeth. 413 00:40:48,000 --> 00:40:53,000 This is the missionary church. When God opens a door, the door is open. Like it is in Asia right now. 414 00:40:53,000 --> 00:41:01,000 Boy, exciting. I know thy works behold, I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it, 415 00:41:01,000 --> 00:41:06,000 for thou hast little strength, and hast kept my word, and hast not denied my name. Behold, 416 00:41:07,000 --> 00:41:11,000 I will make them of the synagogue of Satan, which say they are Jews and are not. They are again. 417 00:41:12,000 --> 00:41:17,000 They say they are Jews are not, but do lie. Behold, I will make them to come and worship before they 418 00:41:17,000 --> 00:41:21,000 feet, and to know that I have loved thee. Man, that's pretty neat. 419 00:41:24,000 --> 00:41:28,000 Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I will keep thee from the hour of temptation, 420 00:41:28,000 --> 00:41:32,000 which shall come upon all the world to try them that dwell upon the earth. 421 00:41:34,000 --> 00:41:39,000 No concerns, by the way. This is the commendation still going. But this verse, verse 10, 422 00:41:39,000 --> 00:41:44,000 is a key eschatological verse. What is Jesus saying to the church in Philadelphia? 423 00:41:44,000 --> 00:41:51,000 Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I also will keep thee from the hour or time 424 00:41:52,000 --> 00:41:57,000 of temptation or tribulation or testing. I won't keep you from the testing, 425 00:41:57,000 --> 00:42:02,000 I will keep you from the time of the testing. See the difference? It is one thing to be protected 426 00:42:02,000 --> 00:42:07,000 through them. It is quite neither to be protected from the time of. See the difference? I will keep 427 00:42:07,000 --> 00:42:11,000 thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world to try them that dwell upon 428 00:42:11,000 --> 00:42:15,000 the earth. One of the things you will discover is the study book of Revelation. There are two groups 429 00:42:15,000 --> 00:42:20,000 of people, those that are saved and the earth dwellers. All the way through the book of Revelation, 430 00:42:20,000 --> 00:42:26,000 those that dwell on the earth are the losers. They are lost. So you don't catch it unless you read 431 00:42:26,000 --> 00:42:30,000 the whole book. You will see that phrase again and again and then that dwell upon the earth. They 432 00:42:30,000 --> 00:42:33,000 don't just live on the earth, they don't happen to be physically on the earth. They dwell upon 433 00:42:33,000 --> 00:42:38,000 the earth. That's the concept. You and I are not earth dwellers. We may be here, but our 434 00:42:38,000 --> 00:42:42,000 allegiance is elsewhere. We are passing through. We are pilgrims. Here they are talking about 435 00:42:42,000 --> 00:42:48,000 the dweller earth dwellers. This time I will keep thee from the time of tribulation, 436 00:42:48,000 --> 00:42:53,000 which shall come upon all the world to try them that dwell upon the earth. That's not us 437 00:42:55,000 --> 00:42:59,000 for two reasons. We don't dwell on the earth and that's what he is saying. He will be raptured. 438 00:43:00,000 --> 00:43:07,000 It is great passage. Behold, I come quickly. Hold that fast which thou hast that. No man take thy crown. 439 00:43:07,000 --> 00:43:11,000 May not be able to lose your salvation, but you sure can lose your rewards. Be careful about that. 440 00:43:13,000 --> 00:43:17,000 Then the promise of the overcomer, him the overcomer thy will make a pillar in the temple of my God, 441 00:43:17,000 --> 00:43:20,000 and he shall go no more out. I will write upon him the name of my God and the name of the city of 442 00:43:20,000 --> 00:43:25,000 my God, which is in the New Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God, and I will write 443 00:43:25,000 --> 00:43:32,000 upon him my new name. And then he that hath an ear to hear what the Spirit says in the church is there. 444 00:43:32,000 --> 00:43:38,000 Again, the promise of the overcomer is in the body of the letter. Then we get to the last one. 445 00:43:39,000 --> 00:43:45,000 Laodicea. Lao means people. Laodicea means rule. This is where the people rule. 446 00:43:47,000 --> 00:43:53,000 Really. I thought Christ is supposed to rule the church. No, these churches do market research to 447 00:43:53,000 --> 00:43:59,000 make sure they're user friendly. These are churches that the people rule, not the Word of God. 448 00:43:59,000 --> 00:44:02,000 Let's see what Christ says about the letter to Laodicea. 449 00:44:04,000 --> 00:44:10,000 Onto the angel of the church of Laodiceans, right. These things say of the amen, the faithful and 450 00:44:10,000 --> 00:44:16,000 true witness, the beginning of the creation of God. That doesn't mean he was created. That means 451 00:44:16,000 --> 00:44:21,000 he was at the beginning in the creation. We know from Colossians. Don't miss it. Don't let that. 452 00:44:22,000 --> 00:44:25,000 It's an interesting phrase, by the way. That title of Christ is used in only two letters, 453 00:44:25,000 --> 00:44:28,000 used in this and also used in Colossians. I'll come back to that later. 454 00:44:29,000 --> 00:44:35,000 Jesus goes on, I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot. I would thou art 455 00:44:35,000 --> 00:44:41,000 cold or hot. So then, because thou art look warm and neither cold nor hot, I will spew thee out of 456 00:44:41,000 --> 00:44:48,000 my mouth. Yuck. Because I sayest, I am rich and increased with goods and have need of nothing. 457 00:44:49,000 --> 00:44:53,000 And know us not that thou art wretched and miserable and poor and blind and naked. 458 00:44:53,000 --> 00:44:58,000 A friend of mine pointed out to me, a lot of us are familiar with what we call the name and 459 00:44:58,000 --> 00:45:03,000 claim it in the gospel. The people on television that raise money, if you're sick, it's because 460 00:45:03,000 --> 00:45:07,000 you don't have enough faith. If you're in Christ, then you should be rich and wealthy and it's the 461 00:45:07,000 --> 00:45:12,000 wealth. We call it the name and claim it, the blab and grab it, guys. Had a friend of mine say, 462 00:45:12,000 --> 00:45:17,000 they're scriptural. I said, what? He rattled off some of the leaders that figured, yeah, they're 463 00:45:17,000 --> 00:45:21,000 all scriptural. What do you mean, it's a sure? Because they say they're rich and increased with goods 464 00:45:22,000 --> 00:45:25,000 and have need of nothing. That's what they're saying, right? They have need of nothing. 465 00:45:25,000 --> 00:45:30,000 Tell by the Rolex watches and the limousines that, you know, have need of nothing. 466 00:45:31,000 --> 00:45:36,000 One of the prominent TV guys is worth a billion dollars on donations, his personal wealth. 467 00:45:37,000 --> 00:45:43,000 I wonder why he pulled that off. He knows not that he's wretched, miserable, 468 00:45:44,000 --> 00:45:49,000 poor, blind and naked as far as Christ is concerned. These are the lay of the scenes. 469 00:45:50,000 --> 00:45:54,000 His exhortation. By the way, there's no accommodation here. Just concerns and exhortation. 470 00:45:55,000 --> 00:45:59,000 I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire and thou that thou mayest be rich. 471 00:46:00,000 --> 00:46:05,000 And white rain meant that thou mayest be clothed and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear. 472 00:46:05,000 --> 00:46:09,000 And anoint thy knives with eyesabbed that thou mayest see. He's using that eomatically, of course. 473 00:46:10,000 --> 00:46:14,000 You want riches and garments and ability to see, invest in me, not these worldly things. That's 474 00:46:14,000 --> 00:46:20,000 what he's really saying. He's using them eomatically. As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten, 475 00:46:20,000 --> 00:46:26,000 bezealous therefore and repent. Now we get into verse 20. This is one of the most beautiful verses 476 00:46:26,000 --> 00:46:33,000 in the scripture as you normally hear it. How many have heard this verse? Behold, I stand at the door 477 00:46:33,000 --> 00:46:37,000 knock. If any man hear my voice and open the door, I will come into him and sup with him and he with 478 00:46:37,000 --> 00:46:44,000 me. Isn't that beautiful? That's a fabulous verse. It's used by evangelists all over the world. 479 00:46:45,000 --> 00:46:51,000 When used as a single verse, that's legitimate, no problem. However, 480 00:46:53,000 --> 00:46:59,000 if you put this in the context of this letter, it's a scathing indictment. Why do I say that? 481 00:47:00,000 --> 00:47:08,000 Let's take a look at the church at Laodicea. Where is Jesus Christ outside knocking to get in? 482 00:47:09,000 --> 00:47:17,000 And his invitation is not to the church. It's to an individual. Behold, I stand at the door knock. 483 00:47:17,000 --> 00:47:21,000 If any man hear my voice and open the door, I will come into him and sup with him and he with me. 484 00:47:22,000 --> 00:47:29,000 It's individual. In the invitation coming from out, this outside the church to the individual. 485 00:47:29,000 --> 00:47:35,000 That's an indictment of Laodicea. You see what I'm saying? He goes on then, 486 00:47:35,000 --> 00:47:38,000 promised to overcome it to him that overcome with I will grant to sit with me in my throne, 487 00:47:38,000 --> 00:47:43,000 even as I also overcame and I'm sat down with my father and his throne. That's where his Jesus is 488 00:47:43,000 --> 00:47:47,000 today. The day will come and the Father, the Son, go get him. That's where he is today. 489 00:47:48,000 --> 00:47:50,000 And then he, the half, the ereledom here with the Spirit says in the churches. 490 00:47:52,000 --> 00:47:57,000 Those are seven letters. Now you notice that each one of these letters, typically a name, 491 00:47:57,000 --> 00:48:02,000 a title of Christ that was used, commendation, concerns, and an exhortation. It's interesting 492 00:48:02,000 --> 00:48:10,000 that two letters had no nothing good set about them. Sardis didn't and Laosia didn't. Those two 493 00:48:10,000 --> 00:48:18,000 letters are devoid of anything good. No way on their report cards. So if the Protestant commentators 494 00:48:18,000 --> 00:48:25,000 like to make mince meat of Thyatira, they better take a good look at Sardis. It's worse off in the 495 00:48:25,000 --> 00:48:35,000 sense. And there are two letters that had no concerns. Smyrna, hey, you're doing fine, 496 00:48:35,000 --> 00:48:42,000 you got any just hanging there. And Philadelphia are the two star witnesses here. Isn't that great? 497 00:48:43,000 --> 00:48:48,000 But something else is interesting that he did half in the years in the first three letters, 498 00:48:49,000 --> 00:48:54,000 the promise to the overcomer is a postscript. In the last four letters, 499 00:48:54,000 --> 00:48:59,000 the promise to the overcomer is in the body of the letter. There's another distinctive 500 00:48:59,000 --> 00:49:04,000 the last four letters I'll show you. Let's go ahead another way. If we take these seven letters, 501 00:49:05,000 --> 00:49:11,000 Ephesus, Smyrna, Bergamis, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia, and Laosia, Ephesus is descriptive 502 00:49:11,000 --> 00:49:17,000 of the apostolic church, strict on doctrine but forgot their first love. Smyrna is the persecuted 503 00:49:17,000 --> 00:49:22,000 church, suffering death, willingly being burnt alive for the sake of the gospel. 504 00:49:24,000 --> 00:49:29,000 And Pergamos is when the church marries the world or the world marries the church. They were called 505 00:49:29,000 --> 00:49:35,000 to be separate and testimony to the church, not to the world, not to be part of it. So in Pergamos, 506 00:49:35,000 --> 00:49:40,000 the church marries the world. And that of course leads to what I'll call for like a better term, 507 00:49:40,000 --> 00:49:48,000 the medieval church, inheriting of the state church that then pursues temporal power. 508 00:49:49,000 --> 00:49:54,000 And then we have the Reformation which leads to what we might call collectively the denominational 509 00:49:54,000 --> 00:50:01,000 churches. And then of course we have the missionary church and we have the apostate church that's 510 00:50:01,000 --> 00:50:09,000 forgotten what the name of the game is. Well that's pretty exciting. Okay. What's interesting is this 511 00:50:09,000 --> 00:50:18,000 first three are a group and the promises to the overcomer are postscripted. That suggests to me 512 00:50:18,000 --> 00:50:27,000 that they have a historical termination. These last four, the promises are in the body of the letter 513 00:50:27,000 --> 00:50:34,000 which causes me to suggest that they endure to the end historically. There's another thing that 514 00:50:34,000 --> 00:50:39,000 the last four letters have. The first three don't. Each one of the last four letters has an explicit 515 00:50:39,000 --> 00:50:45,000 reference to the second coming of Christ. It's allude to in the letter and it's conspicuous by 516 00:50:45,000 --> 00:50:52,000 omission in the first three. But there's more to that. Thyatira is explicitly promised to go 517 00:50:52,000 --> 00:50:58,000 into the tribulation. Jezebel, I'll cast you in bed with you into the great tribulation. 518 00:50:59,000 --> 00:51:06,000 Philadelphia is explicitly promised that it would not. It would be delivered from the time of trial. 519 00:51:07,000 --> 00:51:11,000 So it would have seemed that Philadelphia is consistent in that sense, that it's raptured out. 520 00:51:12,000 --> 00:51:18,000 What happens with Sardis and Laodicea is problematic. It's suspected it obviously depends on individual 521 00:51:18,000 --> 00:51:24,000 issues as they all do actually. Something else that's kind of interesting. In Revelation 2 and 3 522 00:51:24,000 --> 00:51:31,000 we have seven letters penned by Jesus Christ. In Matthew 13 we have seven parables given to the 523 00:51:32,000 --> 00:51:36,000 disciples and the Lord says these are things hidden from the foundation of the world which 524 00:51:36,000 --> 00:51:40,000 means they're not in the Old Testament means they're about the church. And it's interesting how these 525 00:51:40,000 --> 00:51:46,000 seven parables map against the seven letters. Let's just take a couple to make the point because 526 00:51:46,000 --> 00:51:53,000 our time is short. The third letter to Pergamos is comparable to the mustard seed. 527 00:51:54,000 --> 00:51:58,000 Mustard seeds, if you have been in Israel you need little bushes that grow about two or three feet 528 00:51:58,000 --> 00:52:03,000 high that are yellow all over the fields in the spring. Those are mustard plants. Little tiny 529 00:52:03,000 --> 00:52:11,000 seed grows to plant about three feet high. Jesus says the kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed 530 00:52:11,000 --> 00:52:17,000 that grows into a tree that is so big that the birds of the air lodge its branches. Have you seen 531 00:52:17,000 --> 00:52:21,000 a bird, lodges and branches and three foot height thing? No. And furthermore the birds in the 532 00:52:22,000 --> 00:52:27,000 parables in the sower are the devil's ministers. If you're looking for the ministers of Satan 533 00:52:27,000 --> 00:52:33,000 don't overlook the pulpits. That apparently what's happening in Pergamos. Thyatira, in one case it 534 00:52:33,000 --> 00:52:39,000 was the woman Jezebel in letters in Matthew 13 it's the woman in the leaven. And you need to 535 00:52:39,000 --> 00:52:43,000 understand the Jewishness of this. The leaven was the fellowship offering. The woman put leaven 536 00:52:43,000 --> 00:52:49,000 in the fellowship offering which if you're Jewish you would gasp in horror. Leaven is always a type 537 00:52:49,000 --> 00:52:54,000 of sin. So again there's a parallelism if you will between Jezebel's false doctor and the woman of 538 00:52:54,000 --> 00:52:59,000 the leaven in the parables there. Let's skip to Philadelphia. The parallel one there is the pearl 539 00:52:59,000 --> 00:53:04,000 of great price. Jesus talks about the pearl of a great price. Very strange idiom for Jesus to use 540 00:53:04,000 --> 00:53:13,000 because he was Jewish and oyster is not kosher. What is he talking about here? The pearl. What a 541 00:53:13,000 --> 00:53:20,000 beautiful analogy. The pearl is the only jewel that is a response to irritation that grows by 542 00:53:20,000 --> 00:53:24,000 accretion and has removed from its place of growth to become an item of adornment. 543 00:53:26,000 --> 00:53:31,000 Talk about the church being raptured. Man, there you go. Anyway you can go all through with these 544 00:53:31,000 --> 00:53:34,000 but some of them are a little technical. They'll give you the flavor. Let's go one step further. 545 00:53:34,000 --> 00:53:40,000 Jesus wrote seven letters to seven churches. So did Paul. He wrote to Ephesus. That one's easy. 546 00:53:40,000 --> 00:53:45,000 They parallel pretty well. He wrote to let it as Murna. Paul wrote to Philippians. Joy through 547 00:53:45,000 --> 00:53:53,000 suffering remember? Pergamos. Is there a church that Paul wrote to that was worldly? Sure to be 548 00:53:53,000 --> 00:54:01,000 a Corinthian was a way of calling a person a fornicator. And of course Thyatira, religious 549 00:54:01,000 --> 00:54:05,000 externalism to call out of that, bein Galatians, Sardis, the denomination, the word of God to be 550 00:54:05,000 --> 00:54:09,000 your sperp. We have the definitive statement of the gospel. Philadelphia, Thessalonians, 551 00:54:09,000 --> 00:54:13,000 parallel to that, the rapture and all of that. And Laodicea and Colossians were suburbs of one 552 00:54:13,000 --> 00:54:19,000 another. They were explicitly instructed to exchange letters. Interesting how to put you play with that. 553 00:54:21,000 --> 00:54:24,000 Remember we had it outlined. The things which thou hast seen, the things which are, the things which 554 00:54:24,000 --> 00:54:30,000 shall be after hereafter. The vision of Christ was chapter one, the things you have seen. The things 555 00:54:30,000 --> 00:54:34,000 which are the seven churches we've just gone through. Then we get to the third section, the 556 00:54:34,000 --> 00:54:42,000 things which shall be hereafter. The word hereafter in the Greek is metatata means after these things. 557 00:54:43,000 --> 00:54:47,000 That's the, we've been through chapters two and three. When you get to chapter four, 558 00:54:48,000 --> 00:54:56,000 the first word is metatata after these things in the Greek. Chapter four, when we get there, 559 00:54:56,000 --> 00:55:00,000 we'll open up. After this I look and behold, the door was open in heaven and the first voice which 560 00:55:00,000 --> 00:55:08,000 I heard was as it were of a trumpet talking with me, which said, come up hither and I'll show you 561 00:55:08,000 --> 00:55:14,000 things which must be metatata. There's that term again. So from here on is the third section of the book. 562 00:55:16,000 --> 00:55:22,000 Now, there's so much here what we'll do with that reading when we get to the next session. But anyway, 563 00:55:22,000 --> 00:55:27,000 and there were seven lamps of fire burning before the throne. Wait a minute, I thought these lamps 564 00:55:27,000 --> 00:55:35,000 were on the earth, not anymore. Come up hither. I believe this is a milestone of the rap, Paul, 565 00:55:35,000 --> 00:55:40,000 excuse me, John is treated to a glimpse ahead of what it'll be like at the rapture. That's 566 00:55:40,000 --> 00:55:44,000 really what we're seeing here. And the first voice I heard was a trumpet talking with me, 567 00:55:44,000 --> 00:55:52,000 the trumpet of God. And when you get to chapter five is a very pivotal chapter, a passage in the 568 00:55:52,000 --> 00:55:57,000 entire scripture. John is up there in heaven. He says, I saw in the right hand of him that sat 569 00:55:57,000 --> 00:56:03,000 on the throne a scroll written within and on the backside, sealed with seven seals, written within 570 00:56:03,000 --> 00:56:07,000 and on the backside. You didn't usually read right on the backside of a scroll. It was the rough side. 571 00:56:08,000 --> 00:56:13,000 But if it was a title deed, the rules by which it could be opened were written there. This implies 572 00:56:13,000 --> 00:56:18,000 the title deed. That occurs in Jeremiah and elsewhere. And John says, I saw a strong angel 573 00:56:19,000 --> 00:56:23,000 proclaiming with a loud voice, who is worthy to open the scroll and to lose the seals thereof? 574 00:56:24,000 --> 00:56:29,000 Word goes out, huh? Notice the strange verse three, and no man in heaven, 575 00:56:31,000 --> 00:56:37,000 no man had to be a man. Why? It had to be a kinsman of Adam to be eligible to open his book. 576 00:56:37,000 --> 00:56:40,000 No man in heaven nor in earth, neither under the earth, was able to open the scroll, 577 00:56:40,000 --> 00:56:45,000 neither to look there on. Now you and I don't understand what's going on, but John did, 578 00:56:45,000 --> 00:56:50,000 because he says what in the next verse? I sobbed convulsively. I went much, he said, because no man 579 00:56:50,000 --> 00:56:56,000 was found worthy to open and to read the scroll and neither to look there on. And I went much 580 00:56:56,000 --> 00:57:01,000 because no man was found worthy to open and to read the scroll, read the scroll, neither to look 581 00:57:01,000 --> 00:57:09,000 there on. So John understood this is tragic, this is scary, because no man, it took a man and no 582 00:57:09,000 --> 00:57:15,000 man was worthy to do this. So he's panicked. One of the elders said to me, hey, weep not, 583 00:57:16,000 --> 00:57:21,000 behold, the lion of the tribe of Judah, the root of David, have prevailed to open the book and to 584 00:57:21,000 --> 00:57:26,000 lose the seven seals thereof. And I beheld and lo, in the midst of the throne and the forlorn 585 00:57:26,000 --> 00:57:33,000 of the creatures and in the midst of the elders, stood the lamb as it had been slain, having seven 586 00:57:34,000 --> 00:57:39,000 eyes, which are the seven spirits of God sent forth into all the earth. Who is this guy? 587 00:57:40,000 --> 00:57:45,000 A lamb? Yes, but what is he, what is he, what's this title? The lion of the tribe of Judah. 588 00:57:46,000 --> 00:57:53,000 This is what Matthew spends his gospel establishing the root of David. Yes, he was the lamb that had 589 00:57:53,000 --> 00:58:01,000 been slain. The lamb as it had been slain, not a lamb, the lamb as it had been slain. The entire 590 00:58:01,000 --> 00:58:06,000 universe pivots on this historical event. The book of Leviticus lays down the specifications. 591 00:58:07,000 --> 00:58:13,000 The crucifixion of Jesus Christ was not a tragedy, it was an achievement. And because of that 592 00:58:13,000 --> 00:58:20,000 achievement, there is a man eligible to take this title deed that was God's plan from the beginning. 593 00:58:21,000 --> 00:58:25,000 And Satan's attempt to thwart that plan included trying to contaminate the human race to prevent 594 00:58:25,000 --> 00:58:32,000 a man being eligible to do this. So we have the apocalypse, which will, the catastrophic end 595 00:58:32,000 --> 00:58:37,000 crisis is going to be in the next session. The spectacular reappearance of the king of kings 596 00:58:37,000 --> 00:58:42,000 in his global empire will be the center point. The internment of Satan and the abuso, we'll talk 597 00:58:42,000 --> 00:58:50,000 about that. And the millennial reign of Christ on the earth, that it's astonishing how few churches 598 00:58:50,000 --> 00:58:55,000 embrace this biblical view. And then of course the final insurrection when Satan is finally released 599 00:58:56,000 --> 00:59:01,000 and the final, fortunately the abolition of sin. And we'll see a new heaven, a new earth and a new 600 00:59:01,000 --> 00:59:09,000 Jerusalem that concludes it. So let's stand for a closing word of prayer. Exciting passages of 601 00:59:09,000 --> 00:59:15,000 an exciting book. It's frustrating to try to summarize it so briefly. And yet there's a value in having 602 00:59:15,000 --> 00:59:20,000 the whole thing in view. So I submit that to you. But I do encourage you to undertake when you can 603 00:59:21,000 --> 00:59:27,000 a verse by verse exposition of the book of Revelation. If you do it properly, it'll take you into every 604 00:59:27,000 --> 00:59:31,000 other book of the Bible. It's a very, very, it's something you don't do in an hour or two. It's a 605 00:59:31,000 --> 00:59:35,000 lifetime pursuit. But I encourage you in that direction because it will be a continual blessing. 606 00:59:35,000 --> 00:59:43,000 Let's bow our hearts. Father, we just rejoice in getting a glimpse of the final chapters. 607 00:59:44,000 --> 00:59:50,000 We thank you that you've gone to such extremes that we might live. We thank you that there is a man 608 00:59:50,000 --> 00:59:59,000 right now today sitting on the throne. We thank you that he is worthy to open the seals and look 609 00:59:59,000 --> 01:00:06,000 there on. We thank you that we are the beneficiaries of these extremes that you've gone to, that we 610 01:00:06,000 --> 01:00:13,000 don't deserve. But are we grateful for? Father, we would just pray that you'd take our lives 611 01:00:14,000 --> 01:00:22,000 without any reservation. Illuminate that path before us. Let us know precisely what you'd have 612 01:00:22,000 --> 01:00:27,000 of each of us in the days that remain. That we might be more pleasing in your sight, that we might 613 01:00:27,000 --> 01:00:33,000 be more fruitful stewards of these opportunities. That we might grow in grace and the knowledge 614 01:00:35,000 --> 01:00:42,000 of our Lord and Savior. Yeshua. In whose name we commit ourselves this night. 615 01:00:43,000 --> 01:00:49,000 Amen. 616 01:01:13,000 --> 01:01:15,000 Oh 78796
