Every year in August is Cup Match -

a public holiday centred around
a huge game of cricket,

Bermuda's national sport.

Bermudians see Cup Match probably
on the same level that I would say

Newcastle versus Sunderland for
the Champions League Final.

That's how they see it.

It's a massive event that they
look forward to every year,

erm, and the rivalry's there.

Everybody chooses a side,
so St George or Somerset.

You're never both.
SHE LAUGHS

It's the biggest celebration
in the calendar.

People are just wanting
to have a good time.

And people go wild for it.

But behind the partying,

the holiday marks a significant
event for Bermudians.

Yes, it's a two-day cricket match,

but it's, really, it's a celebration
of emancipation from slavery.

It is really important.

It is community.

It's just that whole fun,
and when we see the visitors,

they're just in awe, like,
"Wow, you guys love Cup Match".

It's the first day of a two-day
contest between St George's,

from the east of the island,

and Somerset, from the west.

I am team St George's,

so I'm definitely looking
for a win this year.

Inspector Karema Flood is
a Cup Match-policing veteran.

She knows the holiday is
the service's busiest time of year -

but today it will be a slow burn.

Any types of disorder that
we may experience tends to happen

much later in the day,
as you could expect,

because it's a lot of heat,
it's a lot of humidity,

and it's a lot of rum.

There is a ban on public
drinking in Bermuda -

but for the Cup Match holiday,
this is lifted.

Officers will step in
when behaviour crosses the line.

Clearly, there are some offences

that the police absolutely will get
involved in,

and that's any antisocial behaviour,

if there's any bladed articles,
or any firearms,

or anything of that nature.

With things still calm,
Inspector Karema and her partner,

Detective Constable Renay Rock,

aim to show a reassuring
police presence.

So, looks like the team's
coming out.

The players are starting
to make their way onto the field.

It fires up the rivalry
between them.

We're going to be ready,
and we're taking the cup this year.

the Cup Match weekend

of the Coastguard,

and his 20-strong team.

Our mission - basically,
provide marine security

to all the Cup Match,
to all the boating public,

24-hour search and rescue,

as well as support BPS in any gang
activities on the water.

Be safe, we're going to go home
the way we came to work today.

Remember, it's just a job.

make our way out.

Colour Sergeant Tyler Smith
has been working the water

with the Coastguard for three years.

Got everything? Keys? Ticket book?

- Whatever you're drinking?
- Whatever.

radio check.

With hundreds of boats out
in unusually windy conditions,

the risk of accidents is high.

Coastguard Tyler and his partner,
Corporal Neville Vanderpool,

are making sure every vessel
is fully ship-shape

when it comes to safety.

How many life jackets
do you have onboard?

Can you hold 'em up for me, please?

OK, thank you.

For every person on board a boat,

there must be a life jacket.

If everyone can hold up one,
that makes it easy for us.

And a child-sized life jacket on
an adult is not going to cut it

with the Coastguards.

Yeah, but you've got two kids
right there, where the other...

You got other kids, like,
that's a kids' life jacket.

I know, but you have
kids' life jackets -

I need to see an adult life jacket.

Four, five, six, seven,
eight, nine, ten.

Yeah, I understand, I understand.
We just need to see 'em.

The sea is getting much choppier.

They encounter a packed party boat,

seemingly unprepared for
the worsening conditions.

The craft is full of young adults.

We've got five of you on board.

five life jackets for the boat.

Er, also, where's your sticker,

They've fallen short of

In these conditions, it's a real
danger to all those on board.

There's five people on board,
and they've got two life jackets.

He's wearing a life jacket,

so we're going to make them drop
'em off before they try to go in.

Coastguard Tyler
orders them back to dock,

but it's in the direction of
a strong head wind.

It can take on water, and it can
still capsize and do things.

Thanks to the Coastguards,

the partygoers make it back
to the dock safely.

Alongside festivities on the water,

Cup Match is also celebrated
on the island's famous beaches.

The biggest gathering -
Beach Fest, at Horseshoe Bay -

draws a younger crowd enjoying the
holiday's relaxed drinking laws.

So, officers are preparing
for a busy day.

You're not there to ruin
everyone's day, you're just trying

to make sure that everything's
not getting too overboard.

Especially in this heat, with it
being on a beach

and being right next to the ocean,

there is a tonne of things
that can go wrong.

Police Constable Adam Thompson
is on patrol today with his partner,

Police Constable Melissa Butler.

As of yet, the promise of
a wild party by the sea

hasn't quite materialised.

We did expect a lot more people
to be here, but as you can see,

there's not too many
people here yet.

I think it might pick up
a little bit later on,

it still is early days,
so we'll see how...

We'll monitor the beach,
see how it goes.

Yeah, I thought there would be
tents and music, some barbecues.

There's gotta be more people
to turn up though, you think?

- Erm...
- Has to be.

There's nobody here.

All officers Adam and Melissa
can do is stay out of the sun.

Luckily, we had some
tents up this year.

So, they told us last year,
even though I wasn't working,

that the Bermuda Police Service,
they didn't have any tents,

so that means they were standing
out there all day in the sun.

So, again, I think
I definitely got lucky,

but it can get very, very hot.

It's lunchtime, and the beach
is attracting more revellers.

With no signs of any untoward
behaviour among them,

Officer Adam and Melissa

make the most of the beach-goers'
high spirits.

and more alcohol consumed,

the officers on patrol

might soon be called into
a very different kind of action.

are on duty in Bermuda's busy bays

for the Cup Match holiday,

making checks to keep both
locals and visitors safe.

Every boat on the water in Bermuda

needs to be registered
with the authorities.

It means the Coastguard can track
ownership and enforce the rules.

Erm, so we've done
a reg check on the boat.

Erm, his ticket - his sticker
should be red, it's out of date,

it's a blue one on the side.

Erm, so we've done a reg check,
and it's out of date by a year.

So, we'll write a ticket
for unregistered vessel.

The ticket is for $100.

It's payable by court,

so go upstairs like you owe
the traffic court,

goes up there, and it's payable.

- It's not like you have to go

But now, you can be safe about it.

With the weather improving
since this morning,

the island's boaters are out
partying in their droves.

And the area of Mangrove Bay
is a traditional hot spot

during the Cup Match holiday.

50 boats rafted up together,

hundreds of people in the water,

on other people's vessels.

So, raft up is two boats or more,
you tie up, and they'll start,

basically, coming to alongside.

You might not even know the person
to your port and starboard side,

and then, people will start
hopping along different boats,

talking to different people.

Erm, they do get in the water,
they do some drinking games.

The more alcohol's in people,
the more belligerent people get,

and the more mistakes happen.

So, Coastguard Tyler must
always be on high alert.

So, this raft up here has
too much weight on one anchor,

so they're pulling
the other crew forward,

they're drifting into the swimmers
and the big boat behind.

Coastguard Tyler acts quickly
to alert other partygoers

to avoid a potential accident.

Watch your prop seat!
You're going to go under the boat!

You're going to hit
the boats on that side!

So, the captain of the big boat
behind waved me down

and said they're drifting, so I just
made it known and he started it up,

so hopefully, he can get
that anchor now.

During the raft-up, with so many
swimmers in the water,

a strict five-knot
speed limit is in place,

and most types of boarding
is banned.

Not happening.

Can't be doing that in there.

But that doesn't stop those
determined to dodge the rules.

No, mate, you just went through
the crowd of people,

and I just saw you with the thing.

You cannot be going through
a crowd of people and boats

at anchor like that.

This isn't offshore right now,
this is technically zoned off.

No, in this bay.

Everything's been shut off,
jet skis, all that,

can't come in here,

has been a challenge -

but, with the weather
turning once more,

there's a mass exodus
of revellers heading home.

With so much alcohol consumed,

and so many boats on the move,

it's a tense time
for Coastguard Tyler.

He spots a boat dangerously
cutting across another vessel

under a bridge.

Why you doing that nonsense

The man has explained
his boating behaviour

by openly admitting he's drunk.

Officers Adam and Melissa

are approaching the end of
a rather undemanding shift,

policing the first half
of Beach Fest.

It was a lot quieter
than I expected.

I did expect a little bit more
drama, as you would say,

but it's been a successful day,
everyone's having fun,

everyone's enjoying themselves,
and now it's my turn.

I'm going to head down to the game,

check it out, see what's
happening down at St George's.

Taking over duties
for whatever incidents

the afternoon partying brings

are Police Constable Ayesha Akbar
and Sergeant Tavin Trott.

especially in a setting like this,
happens quite often.

saying that they just found
the phone in the sand.

Sergeant Tavin's mission -
to get the phone back to the owner.

All right, well, the phone's locked,
so I can't do much, really.

Erm...

But, on one of Bermuda's
longest beaches,

identifying the owner is like trying
to find a needle in a haystack,

so he hatches a plan.

I'm going to call
the emergency number,

- just to see if a number could
pop up, we go from there.
- OK.

He calls it into base.

If the number is local,
they may be able to match it

to a name and address
in their records.

Can you record the number that
came up on the screen there, please?

And are you able
to search that number?

It's a foreign number?

Oh, that doesn't help at all.

Turns out the phone
belongs to a tourist,

making it much harder to trace.

Unfortunately,
it's a overseas number,

so it doesn't really help.

We can't check our systems
to see who the phone belongs to.

Sergeant Tavin is out of ideas

when the operator suggests
a different plan -

broadcasting to the entire beach
that the phone has been found.

I don't even know
if we have any loudspeakers.

Right now, we're going to go up
to the life guard tower

to see if they have a speaker phone
or something

where they can put over
the air to everyone,

to see if they lost a phone.

in the 30-degree heat.

the officer attracts the attention

and is heading straight to shore.

to transport the suspect to custody.

With no transport in sight,

Coastguard Tyler needs it

We have a two-hour limit
on the water

for when they are suspected
of being drunk

or under the influence.

So, at 1817 is when
I placed him under arrest,

so we have a timeframe of two hours
to get him back and blown,

to either prove that he has been,
er, drinking on the boat.

They will bring what they bring.

If they breathalyse you here,
or they take you back.

And with the clock ticking,
the patrol car arrives just in time

to take the suspect to custody.

- Grab his bag. I will...
He's got it.
- I got it.

I know, boss, I got it.

- I can't hold my stuff?
- No, bro.

Luckily, the suspect tested
under the drink-drive limit

and was released
to rejoin the celebrations.

Back at the ground, the cricket
match is nearing its end.

These type of events,
there's team rivalry,

and sometimes emotions
can get the better of people.

However, we haven't had any
admittable incidents

to record or deal with.

The crowd has been well-behaved.

Police Constable Lisa Tucker
has been keeping an eye on the crowd

for her entire shift,

fully aware the mood
can change at any moment.

Usually we find, especially
towards the end of Cup Match,

people start to get
agitated a bit more,

so fights might occur a bit more.

At the other side off the ground,

Sergeant Caleb Jean-Pierre
is on patrol.

- How we making out, all good?
- Yeah, yourself?

He spots a group of young men
with a history of gang association

acting suspiciously.

Walk back towards the section
where we were at first,

at least bring

and we're just trying
to position officers

to sort of be in a position
to defuse any...

...anything that might be brewing.

They were all on the embankment
to the top in there,

and they were sat along,
stood along the wall.

more than anything else. Yeah.

But there's not long left
to keep the peace.

We have about 45 minutes of play,
so we want to just keep it nice,

cool, and get them out off
the ground in a nice, safe way.

The match ends in a draw -

which means holders,
Somerset, keep the trophy.

But at the main gate, a crowd forms,

desperate to re-enter the stadium
for the prize-giving.

Ladies and gentlemen, unfortunately,

you are not allowed
to return onto the ground!

To control numbers, no spectators
will be allowed through

until after the Cup Match trophy
has been presented.
