One of the cyclists
was covered in blood.

Oh, my goodness,
how bad are these injuries?

...and on the water.

There's a very strong current
that runs along this channel,

and if you're not paying attention,
it can suck you out.

And a tough time for new recruits.

Police Constable Holly Lavigne-Smith
has served with the police

for almost two years,

since arriving in Bermuda from the
UK, where she was born and raised.

Don't tell my mum, but I can't
imagine moving back to England,

if I'm being completely honest.

I just can't do it.

She may have warmed
to the island's charms,

but being a Brit abroad
has been an eye-opener.

One of my first jobs when I was
a reserve,

we pulled over a vehicle who was
swerving in the road,

and the officers came back
to us and they said,

"OK, we're gonna arrest him.
He's very hot."

And I was like, "What?"
Like, it's not illegal to be hot.

I don't understand, like.

And, basically,
hot, in Bermuda, means drunk.

Today, she's partnered with
Police Constable Krislyn Lambert.

This is left.

- What, it's left? We're going left?
- Yes. Yeah.

Their first task,
doing area engagement checks.

Area engagements are specific areas
where there's, like,

high amounts of crime,
or there may be...

there might've been a recent
serious crime, like a shooting

or a stabbing, and we're just
looking for anything unusual.

Checks made of Tribe Road
number five.

No persons of interest at this time.
Everything seems 10-4.

But then a call comes in about
a road crash involving a bike

which has happened a few miles away.

We're making our way.

So that means that's an RTC - Road
Traffic Collision with injury -

so we don't know the extent
of the call right now

in regards to the injuries
and how bad they are.

When we receive a call for
a road traffic collision,

especially when
it involves a bike,

the worst-case scenario
immediately enters

most of our heads, because riding
a bike in Bermuda is...

is extremely dangerous.

Given the urgency, another
patrol car joins the response,

led by Police Constable
Rajiv Bailey.

We are heading to an RTC, er,
that another unit is going to,

but we're gonna go and see
if they need our assistance.

It's that time of day where
there's a lot of traffic.

Bermuda's rush hour
often brings traffic to a crawl

on the island's narrow roads.

Go on, move forward.

Holly, sometimes drivers
are just complicated

and, like, right now, we can't do
anything but wait for them to move.

With officers
Holly and Krislyn held up,

the delay means Officer Rajiv
arrives first on the scene.

With the ambulance still to arrive,

firefighters are already
tending to the woman

injured in the motorbike crash.

The party involved is getting
treated by attending EMPs.

I'll update you on injuries
momentarily.

This car has no power.

...means traffic duty.

We have to do traffic.

For Officer Rajiv at the scene
with the victim,

the early signs are not good.

And you look at the individual

and you're trying to ascertain
how serious the injuries are.

One of the cycles
was covered in blood,

and you're like, "Oh, my goodness,
how bad are these injuries?"

With a force of almost 400 officers,

the Bermuda Police Service is always
on the lookout for fresh talent.

This year's intake is seven weeks
into a gruelling four-month course.

Today, it's the hard graft
of physical training,

but 23-year-old Madeline Moore
is not fazed.

I feel pretty good.
I keep active, so...

Maddie is a former Bermudian
international swimmer,

so she can be quite competitive.

- Our last run...
- No.
- ...er, me and John made a bet,

who was gonna beat each other.

It was never really... it was never
really, er, a competition

because I smacked him down
real bad, so...

Their workout will start
with conditioning in the gym.

Thought it was a run today.

All candidates must meet
exacting standards of fitness

to graduate the course.

It is very, very, very
physically demanding.

You can feel the humidity.

It's tough, though, it's hard.

Challenging as it is,
Inspector Ronald Taylor knows

that it's essential to prepare
police officers

for the physical demands of the job.

They need to improve
their cardiovascular fitness

because, obviously, to deal
with a member of the public

who may be resisting arrest,

maybe a case where you have to run
after a suspect.

To prove they've got what it takes
in only a few weeks,

the candidates will need
to complete a 10k run

in the challenging summer heat.

We are happy with anything
under one hour.

They need to show today

that they can put in the miles
to stay on track.

Brit police constable
Jonathan Wood, know as Woody,

and his partner,
Constable Shane Granville,

are on patrol
in the centre of the island.

Every shift's different and, erm,

that's one of the most interesting
things about the job,

is that you never know
what's gonna happen.

As an armed response unit,

they're first on the scene whenever
a serious incident is suspected.

- Panic alarm at Crisson's,

Units attending,
please provide call sign.

So, there's been an alarm activation
in the town centre,

at Crisson's, which is a jeweller's.

It could... Well, it could be
an accidental activation.

We quite regularly get a lot
of alarm activations on the island.

I would say, 99% of the time,
it's a false alarm

or set off in error,

but every single time,
you've got to treat it

like it could be genuine,

especially when you're attending
something like a jewellery store.

They're the sort of places that
would likely get broken into.

ARV4, we can attend but we're
out by Southampton Princess,

so some way out, but we'll attend.

There may be another
armed response unit available

much closer to the scene,
but until that's confirmed,

officers Woody and Shane
must respond rapidly.

Given that it is a jeweller's,
I think that's the sort of thing

that's more likely to be
people that would be armed.

This is potentially something,
if it's genuine,

that could turn into
a firearms incident.

But the possibility is short-lived.

Soon, the officers are stood down.

It's a false alarm.

So, our other unit has
got to the scene already.

They've spoken with the staff
at the jeweller's,

so it's sounding like it's almost
certainly gonna be, er,

an unintentional activation.

Officers Woody and Shane
remain on high alert,

aware another incident
may be just around the corner.

Yeah, we just came to a junction,

about to come out onto
the main road,

and a bike went past us,
single female rider,

at a really high rate of speed.

And you could tell at the junction
how fast it was going

past the junction.
And we're struggling.

We're going... We're doing a high
rate speed just to catch her up now,

so we're just gonna
have a word with them

and see if there's any reason
why they're going so fast.

Eventually, the rider stops,
but on a dangerous corner...

This is a terrible pla...

demands an explanation.

I've heard a lot of excuses
while I've been a police officer

for why people are speeding.
I think that's the first time

somebody's said,
"Because it was about to rain."

Although I do sympathise
with that to some degree,

because you can get soaked
if you're on a bike,

but speeding out of the way of it
is not the solution.

Yeah, so you need to slow down, OK?
Cos the roads...

- OK, sorry, yes.
- ...are still damp.

- It's been raining off and on all
day, hasn't it? If you...
- Yeah.

Still, you can come off
at them speeds,

and look what you're wearing. You're
gonna tear yourself to shreds,

- aren't you, at that speed?
- Yeah.

Trying to avoid the rain's not
a valid excuse, all right?

- Sorry, yes.
- Which I think you know.

I'm just gonna give you an advice
form, motorist advice notice,

- just to say to slow down.

Without a laser gun to measure
the rider's speed,

Officer Woody has no evidence
to prove an offence took place.

Can we just have a driving licence

So, he wants to give
the rider a formal warning instead

that will sit on her record.

When we give the advice notice,
I like to read what the bottom

paragraph of the advice notice
actually says,

so they're fully understanding
what that actually means,

that piece of paper.

But the rider is already quite
familiar with the process.

- Have you had one of these before?
- Yes.

Right. Did you read
the bottom bit or not?

- No, I...
- OK, I'm gonna read it
to you so you know what it says.

"For the driving behaviour indicated
and manner of driving,

"I'm satisfied you've accepted
my advice

"and that the driving behaviour
observed was a momentary lapse

- "in good judgment."
- Yeah.
- Right?

This time, she has no choice but to
pay attention to Officer Woody.

So, slow down, please,

and it's in your interests
as well as everybody else's.

- I don't want you to get hurt.
- Thank you.

Try and, you know,
effect a little bit of a change.

She says she had one before,
so hopefully,

second time's a charm, you know?

Certainly seemed to
indicate that she might have

gone over the speed limit
in the past.

Hopefully, she won't do it again,
but who knows?

We... we just have to hope
that she takes our advice

and slows down.

But Officer Woody
might be hoping in vain.

I would say it's been a little week
or two since I've been stopped.

A big part of the way of life
in Bermuda

is enjoying the waters around
its 180 miles of coastline.

Today, a line of high-end
deep-sea fishing boats

heading to port under
the watchful eyes

of Coastguard Corporal
Quinton Burgess

and Private Matthew Stephens.

- How many?
- There's at least 20
of them coming in right now -

20, 30 of them.

The boats have been competing
for prize money

in the Global Atlantic Tournament.

These guys get paid to fish.

Guys probably made
a couple of grand today.

And for the fishing crews,
their work won't end when they dock.

These guys will be scrubbing
every little inch of these boats.

I have never seen one of these
boats looking bad.

Not unless it's in the scrapyard.

But the corporals aren't here
to admire the boats -

they have a vital job to do.

We've been tasked to make sure
that they slow down

when they come to the channel.

These boats draw
huge amounts of wake,

and the waves kind of
making their way to shore,

what happens is, at huge speeds,

it can cause a bit of disturbance.

The vessels keep to
a responsible speed,

so the corporals
continue their patrol.

Yeah, although it looks like
we're in paradise,

you know, things can quickly
change up.

What happens is,
individuals enjoying themselves

on the beach or in the water
can find themselves

in precarious situations that,
you know, they don't wanna be in.

A man on the shore has reported
swimmers on inflatables

being pulled out to sea by the tide.

- Go for it.
- Roughly how far were they?

So they were past the floating...

OK, OK.

The corporals quickly
check the area

where the passer-by
last saw the swimmers.

There's a very strong current that
runs along this channel,

and if you're not paying attention,
it can suck you out.

Thankfully,
the emergency is short-lived.

The swimmers have been spotted
in shallow water,

about to step back onto dry land.

- Can you just confirm that
they are out of the water currently

and back on land?

Yeah, looks like some foam
inflatable lilos

and there's two of them,
one per individual.

They are currently walking along
the rock stone,

about waist-high water.

We're just gonna stay
around the area on scene

until they are fully
out of the water.

Luckily, they were able to
make their way close to shore

and then walk their way back
towards the hotel.

Both individuals are safe.

With the swimmers on dry land,

Corporal Quinton relays
the good news

to the concerned passer-by
who made the alert.

Yeah, they're back on land now,
so they're safe.

The police service's latest
round of new recruits

are being put through their paces.

Oh! It's, er, it's tough, though.
It's hard.

But graduating as a new police
officer also demands discipline.

That's why training places a strong
emphasis on personal appearance...

...with India Cheeseman
overlooking no detail.

We have drill and inspection.

So, you will see,
our shoes will be shiny,

our uniform will be pressed.

One single crease in our shirts.

These are our hats.

So you have to get the lint brush

and you have to, you know, just
roll it to get all the lint out.

But when it comes to
perfecting her footwear,

there's an expert to call on.

He's gonna show me how to get
my shoes nice and shiny.

The polish has been sitting on them
for about a couple of days.

22-year-old candidate
Nasojay Hall

has uncovered a knack
for shoe-shining.

So, I'm a professional, right?
I'm, like, the best in the class,

so what I like to do first
is get this.

Just get some polish like this,
just put it on your front,

and then next,
what you've always got to do,

you've got to melt it
with this right here.

So, you can see,
it looks pretty dull right now.

You just wanna melt it.

So, basically, the more layers
you put on,

the shinier it's gonna be.

Nasojay signed up
to the recruitment process

with his twin brother, Nasojah.

Our whole life, we've been doing
every job together.

Like, every job we do,
we're always with each other.

We saw the police was recruiting
and, I don't know,

it was just something we're really
interested in,

so we both done it together.

And, being twins,
their motivation was identical.

We're chasing all the bad guys.

The twins will only graduate
if they're up to the service's

high standards,
and there are punishments

to presenting poorly at drill.

No earrings, no nothing.

Unfortunately, getting every
presentation detail right

has not been
this class's strong point.

the best at drill,

Honestly, it went better
than past weeks.

Well, I have had a few sessions
where nothing clicked,

and it was truly traumatic.

We got there in the end,
but I'd say that was pretty good.

Two police units have responded
to a road traffic crash,

with the Fire Service
first on scene,

providing medical help to a female
motorbike rider.

-
- 10-4.

Yeah, just update to injury.
It's gonna be left leg abrasions,

left knee, and left...

...cheek and eye.

She did have some pretty nasty cuts,

but I think it was more, like,
abrasions and lacerations,

more than I feared
they were gonna be.

Yeah, the patient is
fully conscious and aware.

She's speaking with firefighters.

We've seen a lot worse.

An ambulance arrives to take over
treatment of the patient

from the Fire Service
and take her to hospital.

To see, erm, that she was coherent
was very good for us,

but that may change over time.
We don't know.

And I try and stay hopeful
in these situations

as long as the person's
conscious and able to speak with us.

But we're just hoping that...
that everything is OK.

With the injured rider
in good hands,

the focus now turns
to the urgent matter

of investigating what happened.

- She hit...
- Yeah.

And determining whether any
charges need to be brought.

We're thinking about what's happened
and why it's happened,

so looking for things like
evidence on, like, tyre marks,

damage onto the bike,

speaking to the witnesses,
speaking to the people involved.

She's made contact with this wall.

You can see there's some fluids.
Yeah.

We call it the golden hour, so in
that timeframe where evidence,

there's a lot of it and we're able
to collect it

and we'll try and work
really quickly to do it.

The injured rider isn't a local,
but a holidaying Brit.

So, the unfamiliar riding
conditions in Bermuda

could provide an explanation.

Due to all the rain
and then the sun, the roads crack,

we have big potholes.

We also have, like,
really small roads,

so even though you can drive
on the left-hand side in the UK,

it doesn't mean you can ride here.

But there are no potholes
at the accident site,

and today's weather has been dry.

Luckily, the picture's becoming
clearer from witness statements.

So it was a single-vehicle accident?

OK.

Erm, but the witness said that
she's come around the corner

and she's made contact
with the nearside wall.

No other vehicle was involved
when the woman rode into the wall.

One can only imagine that
she's now either panicked,

or she's taken her eyes off the road
for a split second,

maybe to the... to the nearside,

and then she's just drifted
into the nearside wall.

The injured rider wasn't under
the influence of drink or drugs,

leaving the cause of the lapse
in concentration a mystery.

So, she's come around the corner
and, whack!

Until a final witness reveals
that a lorry was involved,

but its driver was blameless.

A large truck was coming round
on his side of the road,

so he wasn't going over the line,

but she got nervous
when she saw him,

so she swerved and
she went into the wall.

So, absolutely nothing criminal.
She's...

No-one's...
She just got nervous.

With the matter resolved, and
no charges needing to be brought,

thoughts turn to the injured rider.

We need to go down to the hospital

and check on this lady to make sure
she hasn't got anything serious...

- OK.
- ...going on with her head injury.

- OK?
- That sounds good to me.
- OK.

They're, they're still
concerned about her eye, so...

It looked really big.
It started swelling up.

I didn't... I didn't see when they
moved the thing off of her face.

I followed up with the victim
in the hospital

and, erm, thankfully, she's OK

and hasn't suffered anything
that is long-lasting.

She may be left with a couple bangs,
bruises, maybe some scars,

but I think
she'll make a decent recovery.

Fresh from the end of another shift,

Officer Woody has the luxury
of being able to hang up

his uniform for a few days...

Hello, how are you doing?

...because he's about to go
on holiday.

But first, he must collect
his girlfriend, Daniella,

from the airport, who's flown in
from her home in Peru.

Daniella should be arriving
within the next 40 minutes,

45 minutes, hopefully.

I've not seen her for
about two or three months now.

I think it's three months.

She's travelling over from Lima,

and then we're gonna be making
our way to the UK,

and then Zante
for my friend's wedding.

Super excited to see her.

Was very stressful this morning,
as she almost didn't make it

to Bermuda today, which would've
messed up our entire plans,

so had a bit of a nightmare
and a very stressful morning when,

instead of what was hopefully
gonna be a really relaxing day

until she got here.

The couple have had a long-distance
relationship for three years,

but recently, Officer Woody
took the plunge.

I decided to ask her
if she would marry me,

and she said yes.

Well, unless it was lost
in translation,

but I believe she said yes,
and she took the ring, so...

The holiday with his future bride

Being a police officer,
there are times when the job can be

very stressful, so I'm looking
forward to, er,

having a relaxing holiday,
fingers crossed.

Daniella arrived in Bermuda,

but her luggage and all her holiday
clothes, unfortunately, didn't.

- Oh, no, no.
- Baby.

I think we're gonna have to go to
town and get some essentials, then.

We've got about
two and a half hours.

Now, it's a race against time
to get Daniella

some essentials before their
connecting flight leaves to Britain.
