Where we go is
determined, many cases, at very

high levels of our government.

Our primary focus is going
to be support for the troops

The average age up here

about 19 1/2 or 20.

people, and they really are

the pride of our navy,

of Hong Kong get a chance to

The sustained operations that
we could do is enough to be

able to basically make

Our training objectives
today are to target any factor

As far as our threats
out there, we've got

actually on my way out the door.

I was supposed to
leave on March 1.

My 3 years were done, and I
had my orders, teaching young

pilots how to fly jets.

My wife and kid had moved to
Mississippi, and they were

there waiting for me, and on
February 27, we kind of had

a party, and everybody said
good-bye, and skipper that

night asked me
to stick around.

I think he was in a little bit
of a jam with a pilot that

had a medical condition.

So he was short one
experienced guy.

I don't know where these go,
so we're just going

to toss them.

The skipper is kind of
like the dad of a big family.

When he asks you to do
something, you don't want

to let him down.

The helmet's $60,000.

It's a little Mercedes
on your head.

He trusts me to fly
the American taxpayers'

$60 million assets.

He believes in me, and it
makes a big difference.

it was a tough situation
that the skipper put us in,

with my wife being in a place
that was foreign, but we

accepted it and did it,
and we'll see how

The cards fall.

I mean, one thing
I've learned on this

job is you have very little
control at any time. So...

Everybody
thinks about Iraq.

I don't know if we'll be
dropping bombs,

if we're just flying overhead...

a show of force,
a show of power.

The skipper made
it clear, we're going to do this

for real, and there's gonna
be marines on the ground,

and there's gonna be people
dying, and they're going to

need you to have your bombs
on target and on time

and accurate.

When the president
says you're going to war...

the war fighter in my mind says,
"I'm the first to go.

"I want to be leading the
strike, and, Lord willing,

"I will hit that target
the first time, on time,

"and there's nothing
that can stop that."

I mean, you're dealing
with high explosives.

You're dealing with stuff
that's going to kill somebody.

OK? That's what
it's designed for.

Cut and dry.

The deal is that we don't want
that to happen on the deck.

We want it to happen with
the aircraft, over a mission,

where it's supposed
to happen period.

With loading live
1,000-pound bombs, one thing

happens to that bomb
and it goes off,

everything else is gonna go.

The jet's gonna go.

All the fuel is gonna go.

It's gonna catch other jets.

Missiles'll start
shooting off to other jets.

Those jets' ll blow up,
and it'll just be

a chain reaction.

It's no joke up there.

A million things can
go wrong at any time.

I'll find myself actually
standing up there, and I'll

think about just the fact
that I've made it through part

of the day, keep your head on
a swivel, stay up, and not

being even very religious,
I'll pray to myself, you know,

that everyone makes it
into their rack at night.

Today we are entering
the Arabian Gulf.

We've worked long and hard to
be ready to be here to support

the guys on the ground, and
we are trained and capable

of performing that mission.

That is all.

In the northern city of
Tal Afar, coalition forces are

conducting house-to-house
searches as they try to roll

up the final insurgents there.

In the southern city of Basra,
yesterday, a British convoy

Struck a l.E.D. south
of the city...

This is a different type
of war from the war

that our navy was built for.

The big game, the
ultimate contest, is against

a nation state,
as opposed to insurgents

or terrorists, even.

They're not
wearing uniforms.

They do train, but they are
not fighting conventional

warfare, and it is certainly
ideologically inspired.

And, indeed, they don't have
the same vulnerabilities

a state has because a state,
you can attack, and you can go

after the seat of power
with traditional means

and achieve effects.

It's hard to see who is a good
guy, or tell the good guys

from the bad guys,
even when you see them.

I have not seen
signs of complacency,

but we have to be careful.

I think it's not unrealistic
to say that it'll take

a generation, 25, 30 years,

a war that may be more futile

than we recognize.

sometimes Doug doesn't think

You know, there's a lot
of different personalities

in the world, and the unique
thing about aviation is that

a lot of us have this
very same personality,

and Doug doesn't.

I consider Doug more of
a lover, not a fighter.

The only interaction I

is what I see on TV.

From time to time, I'll hear
a plane launch off.

I'll go eat lunch and see
on CNN that bombs are being

dropped helping to protect the
marines out there, and then

I'll hear a plane land
an hour later.

That's a little
bit surreal to me.

Other than that, I don't
ever think about the war.

I would like to go back on the
ground, actually go in Iraq,

get my boots dusty, maybe
even have a chance

to hold a rifle--

something we don't get to
do very much on the ship.

We haven't even got to touch
a rifle or anything

that makes us marines.

It went very quiet.

Every evolution we did,
there was really

nothing going on.

You were up there,
and nothing went on?

drop flares, try

and instigate a riot?

They didn't want anything.
I told them there's a

whole bunch of shit going on,

The key is to have the Iraqi
people destroy it from within.

If we leave now, it may delay
the inevitable that this will

be another terrorist state
in 10 years or so, but if we

stick with it, hopefully
Iraq will never be

Today two car bombs
detonated simultaneously along

that street, killing at
least 13 people.

Elsewhere in Baghdad, 8 day
laborers who were waiting

for jobs were killed
when a car bomb exploded.

we departed San Diego,

and before we execute our
return to home port, I wanted

to take a few minutes to
say thank you for the superb

deployment performance.

By any measure, you've gotten
the job done magnificently.

Forward march!

It takes a team to steam
over 57,000 miles safely.

We flew 1,167 sorties,

over 6,100 hours, in support
of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Ultimately, history
will be the judge

of our efforts there.

And we should also count our
blessings that other Americans

are now out there standing
the watch to protect us while

we're at home
with our families.

War is all about power.

No matter which way you put
it, or no matter which reason,

you justify it for, it's all
for somebody's one big idea.

Maybe we accomplished a
mission, but I don't think it

will ever be accomplished,
to tell you the truth.

Sacrificing yourself and
a very big relationship

and a child for the sake of
this country is what

America is all about,

but there comes a point where

how much sacrifice will it take
to actually stop war?
