Poppy started skating
when she was about eight.

She insisted that we take her
down to Bondi Skate Park all the time.

Andrew and I, we used to
fight over who got to take her.

We had a pretty ignorant view
of skate parks and what went on.

Are you afraid of them?

Anything?

Drop-ins.

Drop-ins.

Back then she was
probably one of the only kids.

Don't think, just do it Pops.

Imagine Hagen standing
there holding your hand.

They let her have her equal time in the
bowl and it really changed our perception

of skateboarding and it
was a really lovely place to

be around with people who
wanted to see her improve.

I really, really loved it.

I just felt so free skating.

and these are some of the tricks I can do.

It struck us early on
that she was good at it.

That there could
be a future in it.

My friends think that I'm
crazy that I'm doing this.

Hi, I'm Poppy Olsen and I'm currently
Australia's best female ball runner.

She won the title
at the start of 2012,

beating skaters who
were over twice her age.

Yeah, Poppy!

Poppy's had an incredible amount
of opportunities in the last few years.

She just returned from
six weeks in the States.

She's been sent
to Woodward West.

She's been
progressing ever since.

She's competing at an
international level now.

She won the under-14 combi
bowl competition for the girls.

And it's just been unreal just to
see that journey being fantastic.

From very early on, she said that
she wants to be the best in the world.

There's some terrific
role models above her.

Lise Almonto and
Nora Vasconcelos.

And she wants to be like them
and she wants to skate that well.

But the most important thing is that she's
got the drive and the ambition to do it.

When you're skating for a few years, the
more you skate, the less scared you get.

And I just got higher and higher and now
I'm just trying to keep on getting higher.

I think I have had the opportunity
to go on the post competition.

But the only thing
is if I go on the

professionals, I can
never go back to the kids.

So it's just a big
thing in my head.

I just have to think about
it and just decide when.

It's

the most important
thing for me so far.

Our lives are completely
changed by Poppy's skateboarding.

She will go to the States
three times this year.

We have to go to compete,
because that is where it's happening.

Hoping that our other two children are
not losing out in the process but there's a

lot of good that is coming
towards Poppy's way

at the moment and and
yeah, I look forward to it.

I think we should roll with
that while it's happening.

I was like super excited
to go to Combi because

it's one of my favourite
events each year.

There are a lot more
girls over in the States.

But it's still a small enough
community that they all know each other.

And gosh, they're
all supportive.

So many of my best friends were
there that I only get to see at Combi.

And I was skating with so many
girls that I looked up to so much.

I also didn't expect
anything from myself because

it was the first time
in the Pro Division.

I just wanted to maybe make
the finals, so that was my goal.

She's got a good chance.

There's about ten girls.

So six make it through to the
finals, but there's only five spots.

And there's ten girls good
enough to get through.

There's twenty-four.

But I reckon she
can beat ten of them.

Why are you happy?

Because you're home or
because you're with Daddy?

I always feel like I have
pressure in skating comps.

If I have a crowd cheering me on or other
girls, that's scary for a lot of people,

but I reckon that's
really fun and exciting.

Poppy handles
competitions very well.

She can finish a
line without falling off.

She can land all the tricks.

She amazes us with how
well she steps up to the plate.

I didn't really know what to
expect for making it to finals.

I think I was really
hoping I would.

A lot of the time in competitions
I'm not that confident in myself.

But I think I should just
believe in myself a bit more.

Because it's just a
learning process, I think.

I'd

be so excited, but
it doesn't matter.

She did more than I
ever hoped for already.

There

was just too much going on.

I didn't really even
hear the names before.

I swore they'd
forgotten my name.

I was convinced.

I was like, damn it.

They left me out.

They just grabbed me.

I was like, oh, did I get
third or second or something?

Just held up one
finger and I was like...

What?

What the heck?

It was crazy to win
that competition.

So much fun skating
with everyone.

So much fun.

From there it
just... It just evolved.

I think when you win, you
get a lot of press and coverage.

And she doesn't
actually really love that.

She likes to stay
out of the limelight.

But she does want to
be better than she is.

Does Poppy have
pressure to succeed?

Maybe yes.

Maybe Andrew
and I put that on her.

I hope we don't.

She wants to be as
good as she can be.

As a parent, there's a fine line
between pushing and encouraging.

That just makes me want to quit.

But at the same time,
she pushes herself.

I've been asked to speak at TEDx
Ultimo at the Powerhouse Museum.

Because I've kind of learnt parts of my
speech with the slides that are going on.

For as long as I can
remember, I've been drawing.

As my passion for skateboarding
grew, so did my desire to create and draw.

When I was nine years old, I started
making my art into greeting cards.

And soon after that, I enrolled in a
course called Club Critpreneur that taught

me all about goals and
basic business skills.

I started selling at
markets to help fund my

skateboarding trips
to international comps.

I also started submitting
proposals to my local council.

And soon I was getting paid to
paint the electricity boxes in the area.

It really wasn't until
now that I started to see

how much art and
skateboarding were connected.

Ever since I've been able to hold a
pencil, I've been just drawing things.

The thing I love about
art, there's no rules.

Like in skateboarding, you
can do whatever you want.

You can just be free
on the piece of paper.

You don't have to be told
to do something down here.

You can just feel free.

The X Games is probably the biggest
extreme action sports competition there is.

It's like the Olympics
of skateboarding.

I guess I've started progressing
in ball skating and I won the event.

Girls' Combi Pool Classic.

X Games invited me.

So Brighton was the youngest person to
go on the X Games, which was incredible.

Let's catwalk it
to the VIP room.

I was like the first Australian girl to go
on the X Games, which probably isn't as

good as the youngest, but we
just had a really good time together.

Poppy, I've... This
is just next level.

We're in the Gold Lounge,
fully catered for meals.

It's been really exciting.

I think I've been really
appreciating the effort that Poppy's

put in to get here and how
lucky we are to be invited.

you, dear Poppy.

I love being a mum.

I love... I don't want to do
anything else but be a mum.

I don't even want...

Poppy to get any older
because then she won't need me.

Seeing the course for the first time was
pretty cool because I don't really skate

park that much, so it's always
interesting looking at park courses.

And this time it was different.

Like, I'd never seen
anything like it before.

And so I was really excited but really
nervous to skate it at the same time

because I just like big ramps
and they were a lot smaller,

so it was harder for me to
do a lot of different tricks.

I don't think she's had the best lead up
to it after she had fell on the very first

day and that's knocked
her confidence around.

She fell on a trick that
she does very easily.

She won't try it again.

She's a better skater than
what she's doing out there.

And that, as a parent, is
really frustrating to watch.

At the same time, you want her to
have fun and enjoy the whole experience,

but we spent a lot of money to
get here, so just do your best.

You know, I don't want her to walk
away going, I wish I'd just tried it.

You have to push yourself.

You have to be frightened.

It's the X Games.

This is it.

So I want you to do half an hour
out there, come in for five minutes,

a couple of minutes.

OK.

OK, so half an hour.

Strengthen some of your hairs.

Yeah, I'll try.

One foot at a time, Fran.

Work out where you can do it.

You've got to do some
work in that back ball.

Yeah.

The day before the competition
or, like, the couple of days before,

that's when everyone starts to get
really intense in their skating and focus.

I started thinking about
where I could put different

tricks and, like, what I
can do in different spaces.

I usually get there, like,
a week before, so it was

kind of hard at this competition
having a lot less time.

I think it was, like, three days
of four-hour practice sessions.

It seems like a lot, but there were,
like, 12 girls and a lot of these other

girls were snaking, which is
going when you've just had a go.

They were just really good at getting
turns, and I'm not very good at it.

It kind of brought back a lot of memories,
being at Bandai Bola Rama for the first

time, meeting Poppy, and we
had, like, this set-up for beginner

skateboarders, and where she is now,
looking at her on an X Games course,

it's been such a huge
accomplishment for her.

It's been pretty tricky,
because that's, like...

Because it's angled
differently, yeah, yeah, yeah.

You're getting lost here.

Can you not...

Can you get up here on coping, or can
you go straight over there to a hand plant?

You're going to have to do something,
because, look, it's just wasted time.

Just get it once.

SHE LAUGHS I don't

When we get out of

The fun thing about Poppy is that,
you know, she kind of practises at what

you feel like is 50%, but
as soon as that timer goes,

she turns it up to, like,
150, and it's just wild.

Hopefully she can bring it.

She did so amazing earlier
this year, taking out first

place in her first pro
competition is just incredible.

Just make sure that, you know, really
skating hard so that the judges and

even the audience as
well as they know, wow,

that was the best skater
on the day for sure.

SHE SCREAMS

It's a weather watch, day three here at X
Games Austin 2016, but with the rain on

hold at the moment, we're set to kick
off the Women's Skateboard Park Final.

I'm pretty sure we were
meant to go at 2 o 'clock.

The comp just kept on being
dragged on and dragged on.

And I remember someone
coming up and saying, this

is it, like, if it's not
on today, it's not on.

So that's when I kind
of just grabbed a cloth

and started helping
them dry out the bowl.

Every girl skater was just in the bowl
drying it out, and I thought that was such

a cool moment, just seeing us all,
how much we want this competition.

The park is dry.

So we're excited for this one.

We haven't had Women's Skateboard
Park at X Games since 2013.

Well, and that doesn't
mean that this talented field of

women have been out there
ripping a lot of good skaters here.

This is a very competitive field,
and I think we're in for a great show.

So let's start this thing off.

It's a 12-skater final.

Ryder getting three runs.

We count the best score.

Bryton Zoiner, the
youngest female competitor

in X Games history
on her first run.

71 on the dot for Zoiner.

I know there's still
some other heavy hitters

that are yet to drop

This is probably the first
competition I've ever been nervous for.

Because I think I wanted

There was this jump
that I just didn't make.

It was so annoying, because
I'd kind of practiced it by itself.

I'd never really
practiced it in a run.

I was kind of upset, but...

I was struggling a bit,
because I was just making it up.

Here's Poppy Star Olsen, currently in

day she was hoping for.

This is her final attempt,
and she can do it.

She's a great... Oh, shoot.

I mean, it was my first year
in the X Games, so I didn't

really know where I was gonna
get or what I wanted to get.

And so I was just so
tired by the end of it.

Being able to come out here
for the very first time on the

biggest stage in skateboarding
and just get your feet wet.

First Australian girl.

This is a huge platform
for women's skateboarding.

You can't put a
price on experience.

Just be proud.

I am.

Very proud.

The top three got these X Games
medals, which was incredible.

They got quite a bit of money for
girls' skateboarding, which is awesome.

I know that it'll
probably grow each year.

I think it was just a bit of a shock for me
and just looked up to my mum a lot and

just wanted her validation sort of
thing and maybe, like, seeing her, a little

shock that I did... that I didn't do
very well at the comp and, like...

having other people, like, ask you
about it and your family, probably.

And just, like, me, like, not being
used to, like, not placing highly.

Just having...

probably a sillier,
younger mindset.

Probably hadn't...

had an effect.

When I first found out my parents
got divorced, it was pretty bad.

Pretty annoyed and upset.

I thought it would take me
longer to get over it than I did.

Cos Dad still is a part of
our life, so it wasn't that hard.

And I think it
affected Kip the most.

Just not having Dad
as much in her life.

Met Andrew at 25,
married at 27, Poppy at 29.

Had Banjo at 30, had Kip at 34.

Yes.

And was a full-time mother.

Didn't work.

I just was full-on looking after the kids
and that's what I wanted to do as well.

And then...

Yeah.

17 years after we were married,
we got divorced, unfortunately.

And had to move to Newcastle cos
we couldn't afford to stay in Sydney.

Here we are.

Yeah, we were devastated.

We did not want to leave Bondi.

But then like a month
here and we loved it.

You can just skate and
surf and swim all day.

It's like a rotation.

Dad stayed in Sydney a
bit and came and visited.

But then he got a house and now
he's moved like a block away from us.

Skateboarding, surfing
and sports climbing are set

to make their debut at
the next Olympics in Tokyo.

For skateboarders,
it's a game changer.

I've always wanted
to go to the Olympics.

Trying out and seeing if
I can represent Australia.

I mean, I don't know
what it's going to be like

and there's a lot of
mixed thoughts about it.

But I'm just like amazed to see what
it is going to be like and if it works.

It's amazing that skateboarding is
being included in the Olympic Games.

It's going to be putting
it on the world stage.

Right now there's no proven pathway
to the Olympics for skateboarding.

Nothing like surfing or tennis.

Just this real big marquee events around
the world that skaters love to go to.

You are considered
one of the top skaters if

you do well at those
contests competitively.

With the Olympics come
sponsors which just means there's

more money, more events and
more opportunity to compete.

Now it's all about
experience, gaining points

and earning money to
be able to keep competing.

So when the time comes they're ranked
in the top skateboarders in the world and

we'll have that opportunity to be
able to qualify for the Olympic Games.

The Vans Park Series
is an exciting contest.

Probably the closest
thing to what an Olympic

course would look like
for the park skateboarding.

Taniya Myers, Jam 3, Gracie
Earle, Izzy Butu, Copystar Olsen.

At skate contests typically you've got
a qualifying round to get into the finals.

You get two to four runs.

Each run is about
40-45 seconds long.

Judges are looking for a skater for
difficulty of tricks, use of the entire

skatepark, speed and
amplitude, style and consistency.

It's simple.

The place on the podium, you
just have to get the most points.

Going into it, it was kind of different
from what I'm used to, but it was really

fun and this is going to be the type of
skateboarding that's in the Olympics.

Third place, Taniya Myers.

Second place, Sinead Collins.

And first place,
Poppy Star Olsen.

In the last Fans Park
Series I came 15th and this

one I came first, so I
must be getting a bit better.

I always want Poppy
to be a great role model.

There's an incredible
amount of girl skaters.

They're coming out of
everywhere and they're brilliant.

They're going to be
amazing in five years time.

She's the eldest one
that's doing the best in

Australia at the moment
and so she is paving the way.

I've been travelling with Poppy and
like seeing her at all these contests for a

couple of years now and the
past years are super fun with her.

She always stays at our house for
like a month and she's like family.

I'm not going to do
stickers on a group TV night.

I've been staying at Brightons and just
skating all these different parks for a

couple of weeks and it's so
good to get this practice over

here because there's so many
more skaters and you learn a lot.

We are practicing for X Games together
and we're just such good friends that we're

not really that competitive
against each other anymore.

We push each other to learn new tricks
and it's just exciting having another girl

skater there and just being close to
the same skating ability is really fun.

I've always wanted to go to the
Olympics since I was really young.

Still got your
eye on that prize?

Yeah.

Yeah.

I think that'll be really cool.

I'm not too sure how
it's all going to go.

It's going to work out.

It's still a few years
away so I'm just going

to have to keep progressing
and keep competing.

X Games is still the
biggest comp there is.

After coming ninth
in Austin, I went in this

time with the same
approach that I had for Combi.

Skate my best and
see where that gets me.

And I got in.

And then my goal

Because I was so
happy that I was there.

I told you my breath.

And history is made.

You can see the emotion
between these girls.

They spend so
much time together.

Skateboard sisters.

Everyone that I was
skating against I looked

up to and they're all
incredible skateboarders.

There was this weird
sense that I actually did it.

I ended up coming third and getting
this bronze medal and it was crazy.

I mean insane.

One of the best
feelings of my life.

She's a star.

In January, they had this
meeting with all the skateboarders.

It was just a day talking
about what it's going to be like.

It's just starting now.

And everyone's starting
to get funded and starting

training and coaches
are starting to pop up.

We're working towards July 2020.

We will find out in the next
month how we get you there.

We kind of got a rough idea
of who the people around

us, like, who was on
the team trying to go for it.

They think she's got a
real shot at the Olympics.

But it also means she gets
funding for a coach and for travel.

Strength and
conditioning, everything.

If she goes to the
Olympics, certainly a

mother is not allowed
in the Olympic village.

She really will be on her own.

And that's what they
keep saying, you know.

I get emails saying, you know, you've done
a great job, but we'll take it from here.

And I kind of think, well...

You know, it's tough for you.

I'm still here.

I'm still living with her,
feeding her every day.

You can't even
cook cheese on toast.

You've got to teach
her to feed herself.

A lot of young
people look at sort of

digesting the Olympic
Games for the first time.

And hopefully some older people seeing
these new sports and what their kids are

watching is what they're going
to be seeing in the future as well.

Can you just imagine what the ancient
Greeks would have thought of this?

Oh, look, I think
they'd be excited.

Come on, mate, have a ride!

Yeah, I will.

I've known Alex...

forever.

Just growing up in competitions, and
he's always been really good at advice.

And just having him being like a
mentor and giving me tips has been really

helpful, especially in the
lead-up to competition.

We've just known each other for a hell of
a long time, and we've always helped her

go forward, and here I
am for an Olympic program.

What does coaching mean?

It's really different, isn't it?

Because skateboarders
don't really have coaches.

You have mentors
that you skate with.

You share ideas and everything.

Definitely learning and
growing through the role.

She's the real deal.

She skates because
she wants to skate.

She's got a great crew.

She's in the industry.

So how do you separate the
lifestyle compared to being an athlete?

And that's the cultural change.

Poppy has to understand that,
yeah, it's a different job now.

It's a government job.

They've given you money, and they
don't want to hear about fun and play.

It's about results.

And I think that's going to
take a little bit to settle in.

You're good, Poppy.

You'll work it out.

You know, in a competitive world, you've
got to have that element of ruthlessness.

She's just a genuinely
really nice girl.

You've got to really want it.

Just go for it.

Yeah.

Stop picking it up.

Once I've picked you up,
the easiest one over the

hump, or the grind over the
hump, or whatever you want.

Counts.

Bondo Bowlerama is one of the
biggest bowl events in the world.

It's one of the most
famous, and it's got

big skaters coming
from all around the world.

Poppy knows every
inch of this bowl.

It's where she learnt to
skate, where she grew up.

This year there is a girls'
division, which is amazing.

Talking about the Olympics, how do you
think our guys are going to fare in that?

Oh, I think they're going to
be some of the top competitors.

I mean, I believe Poppy will be
representing Australia for sure.

When I first started, skating
was more of a novelty.

It was considered a toy.

Now it's here to stay.

It's something that
kids do as much as they

choose football or as
much as they choose to surf.

Skating is just
a part of life now.

Today, actually for
the first time, one of the

biggest skateboarding
competitions in America.

They equalize the prize
money for women and men.

$65,000.

Hopefully that's going to grow with other

I was hoping that Poppy had to play to
her strengths, and that was that she just

skated faster and stronger
than everyone else.

some emotions about it before going in.

So it's really interesting to find out

of the mounting pressure

So I'm currently in Year 12
at my last year of high school.

And I go to the big picture.

I went to school.

I basically moved there because I was
always travelling and skateboarding and it

actually mean something.

I'm missing school.

be able to film a video part.

Especially for me
because I like skate a lot of

competitions and it's so
nice to just like skate and film.

I think it's actually just
made me better at skating.

Every one of them is so
unique in their own way.

And they're just really
creative with their skating.

And it was just so
great being a part of that.

I first met Una
2018 I think it was.

We became friends.

She was really funny and
nice and she was a really

cool skater and like someone
that I could skate with.
