Olympic Stadium, Rome

The German national football team
won the World Cup in the summer of 1990.

The players, coaching staff
and head coach Franz Beckenbauer

stayed in a hotel by Lake Como.

Never-seen-before film footage
from Bodo lligner, from the FIFA archives

and Sepp Mater
provide a record of this time.

35 years later, the World Cup winners
remember an unforgettable summer in Italy.

A SUMMER IN ITALY
WORLD CUP 1990

The best footballers in the world were
in Italy. Every player wanted to be there

because players like Maradona
and van Basten were in Italy.

And it filled us
with this incredible desire

to prove ourselves,
to show what we could do,

to prove we were
as good as the others.

Prior to the tournament,

our feeling was that we wanted
to go there and win at any cost.

People are waving to us
from the roadside again.

We haven't seen this since 1974.

We have a new,
young generation now that...

You can see
that they're enjoying their football,

and it's a joy
to watch them play.

I remember there were
huge numbers of camper vans there.

I remember lots of fans
with German flags lining the roads

and welcoming us, and...

They were all rooting for us,
and this tiny village

really came alive.

There was black-red-gold everywhere.

This gave us an idea
of the mood at home, of course.

And that spurs you on,
gives you a sense of obligation.

And they all gathered
down by the main gate

and camped there for days.

You could tell by their accents alone
where they came from.

The Berlin Wall had come down
a short time before,

and...

people who'd never
left East Germany before

realized that they
could now leave the country.

I spoke to several people
who couldn't believe

that they could now cross the border
and the next one after that.

And I think it really helped us

that there were East Germans
in Italy, too.

Hey, Carlos!

Hey. Welcome.
When did you arrive?

Yesterday. - Yeah?
- Yeah. - OK.

My flight left at 9 a.m.
- This place is totally different. - Eh?

I came here six or seven years ago
because I wanted to take a look at it.

I went up there.
- That was Franz's room. - I know.

It's nicely laid out, isn't it?
- I think I was up there somewhere.

You were behind bars!
They put you behind bars!

You're probably right. - The substitutes
were behind bars! - Right!

And the first-team players
were in there.

I think Lothar was alone in there.
- He took over the whole place.

Do you remember any of this?

I don't remember that building.
- Me neither.

But you can see it on the old photos.

I don't...
- It was down there.

And the football pitch was here.
- Yes, down there.

That's right.

But they've put in these terraces.

I think...
- It was all on one level. - Right.

It wasn't a proper football pitch.
- It was just...

Just a small pitch.
- I remember it well. We used it a lot.

I remember Franz ringing up one time:

"Are you in the mood, Andy?"
- I said: "Yes. For what?"

"We're going to train.
Get down here, OK?"

I said: "Yeah."
And Uwe was asleep.

"Where are you going?"
- "Franz called, he wants to train."

Hid did that with the subs.
- Right.

So I got dressed, ran down here,

and Franz trained with us here.

It was a great time.
- It was.

And the atmosphere was great:
the climate, the team, the...

There was terrific friendship
between all of us,

terrific camaraderie.

It really was a fairy tale.

It was the first time I'd been
to this neck of the woods, been to Italy.

I had decent spaghetti
for the first time!

And the attitude towards life here,
the way the Italians just live,

the way they just enjoy life:

it was the first time
I really got to know that.

I remember we had a day off.
Franz sometimes gave us a day off.

I was walking down by Lake Como
and looking across the water

when I saw this really fantastic boat.

All of a sudden, someone waved at me.
I thought: "He's waving at me."

And there was Lothar
at the steering wheel: "Andy!"

You can just imagine.
- Right. - It was brilliant.

Everything was much simpler
for the players. You could do anything.

There were no mobile phones...
- There was one phone, in Uwe Bein's room.

He hogged it
for the entire four weeks.

I had to wait till he went into the
bathroom so I could make a call.

I couldn't believe it. - There was
an incredible atmosphere within the team.

Yeah, it was a great time.
Now we're old men. - Right.

Let's drink a toast to the World Cup 1990!
- Yes, here's to 1990.

There was pressure, sure.
We'd been in two World Cup finals.

Expectations were high.

Our German supporters here
wanted us to do really well, and...

So there was pressure,
but we were confident too.

We were all totally convinced...

We were all convinced
that we could do great things.

And we were a group
that only had once thing in our sights:

to win the World Cup.

The German team's first match
of this World Cup:

Germany versus Yugoslavia.

The players are in excellent shape,
both physically and mentally.

I keep saying: "The others aren't better
than

we are and they have to beat us first."”

We're in great spirits. We did everything
required of us in the run-up to this.

And I think we'll remain focused
throughout the journey.

How? By singing funny songs?

No, we'll play our Italian CDs

and prepare ourselves mentally.

The first match always sets the tone,
of course.

If you win your first match by the skin
of your teeth or are narrowly beaten

or maybe make a draw,
it will influence the rest of your games.

We knew we had to win
the first match so that we...

We all know Germany:
if we'd made a draw or lost,

that would've been a huge blow.
And we didn't want that.

The Meazza Stadium holds 78,900 people,

and about half of these
are from Germany.

But many of the Italians here
will be backing the German team,

as Brehme, Matthédus and Klinsmann
all play here.

We only had home matches in Italy.

The Italians were rooting for us,
and for the first time we had German fans

from East and West,
which was also new.

It was the first tournament
where both sets of fans supported us.

When they weren't supporting Italy,
the Italian fans in our area,

who supported Inter Milan,
turned into Germany fans.

And because of this,

the Italians had an incredibly positive,

friendly and cordial disposition
towards us.

It was an absolute pleasure.

Yugoslavia were the secret favourites.

They had a really strong team.

We knew,
and Franz had prepared us for this,

that we would have to stay
highly focused throughout the game.

And the game was definitely tougher
than the result would indicate.

Franz told us...

to show everyone
we were there to win the Cup.

Matthaus.

It's in!
- Goal!

We took them apart
and gave them a good hammering.

And that was the signal for us
that we could beat good teams as well.

And that was impressive.

2-0...
- Yes!

Through Jiirgen Klinsmann.

That was a co-production...

by Inter Milan players
Andreas Brehme and Jurgen Klinsmann.

No other players are judged as much
on the number of goals they score.

So it's incredibly
important for every striker

to score their first goal of the
tournament as quickly as possible.

Goal! - Just one goal in it:
white-knuckle time now.

Franz Beckenbauer is livid.
- The defence were asleep.

I played with Lothar Matthaus
for a long time,

and that was the most extraordinary
match I ever saw him play.

He'd trained for this for years.
His coach was Trapattoni,

who very often,
after training sessions,

would get him
to do a slalom through cones...

He did a slalom
right through their midfield.

Matthéus again.

And that's the goal!
- World class! World class!

Second to none!

Lothar Matthéaus
is as strong as an ox today.

Incredible!
That shot was as straight as a die!

That fact that it worked in such
an important match is even better.

You train your whole life
for a moment like that.

It wasn't just a world-class goal,
it was also a signal

to all the other nations there
that they would have to deal with Germany.

Brehme.

Oh, it's gone in!

It's a goal: 4-1.

Rudi Véller.
- Brilliant, now we've won.

That opened the door for us.
We played really well.

That carried us
through the tournament.

After the match,
Franz Beckenbauer said to us:

I wasn't talking bollocks

when I told you we have the chance to
play at the top level or in the World Cup.

You've shown you can do it, and I want
the same again in the upcoming games.

Many people watching have said
that Inter Milan beat Yugoslavia today.

No, we all beat Yugoslavia.
Of course,

it was special for us to score goals
in "our" stadium.

That's a terrific feeling.
But we're all there for each other.

There are 22 of us,
and we all stick together.

That's what defines this group.

We weren't expecting
a result like that.

But now we know
what we're capable of.

We just need to avoid
making the mistake

of underestimating
our other two opponents.

But I don't think anyone will,
due to our previous World Cup experience.

So I think we can achieve
the goal we've set ourselves.

There was definitely a hierarchy.
And Lothar Matthaus was the boss

as well as the best player
in the tournament at that point.

So we young players
looked up to him.

Lothar was the pack leader.

Not just on the pitch,
but off it as well.

He also had an ear
for the numbers 13, 15 and 18.

He was always an extension
of Franz Beckenbauer,

but he always expressed
his own opinion too.

Back then, I was the apprentice
and he was the master.

Because of his class,
not the age difference.

He was at the absolute peak
at that time.

He was World Player of the Year 1990.

And I had, and still have,
tremendous respect for him.

We had problems with each other later,
simply because we're very different.

We weren't always
on the same wavelength.

But on the pitch,
we were totally in synch with each other.

The goal against Yugoslavia, the 3-1.

Who was the first one
to celebrate with me?

On the ground”? On the right there,
by the corner flag?”? Jurgen Klinsmann.

We both wanted success and knew
we could only get it with each other.

| profited from Jurgen
when he scored goals.

And he profited
from me leading the team.

That's how it was.

In Milan today,
the German team

are facing their second meeting
with the United Arab Emirates.

Strictly speaking,
it wasn't the toughest of matches,

and we should've scored four goals
in the first half.

A chance for Rudi Viéller!

Can he get to it? Yes!

He puts the ball in
and Klinsmann misses!

Vbller's pass is blocked.
Klinsmann shoots. What a save!

Viéller shoots wide.

What a chance for Rudi Vbller.

One of us could've scored five goals
and been top scorer of World Cup 1990.

So in retrospect,
it was a missed opportunity

for us strikers to add to our tallies.

Rudi probably sees it the same way.

We both had so many chances
in the first 20 minutes.

The kind you'd normally put away
in your sleep.

But we didn't and were getting frantic.

Here comes the square pass
and Véller scores!

Rudi Véller scores the breakthrough
first goal to make it 1-0

in the 36th minute.

He crosses with his right foot
and Klinsmann scores!

And these two players,
who previously couldn't hit the target,

have now both scored

within 120 seconds.

Thomas HéBler jumps under the ball.

The Emirates have scored a goal
through Khalid Ismail Mubarak!

It's the only goal the Emirates
have ever scored at a World Cup.

That's a huge piece of football history
in the UAE.

And now it's all over: 5-1.

I'm often in Dubai, and people from the
older generation often mention that goal

and say how proud they are to have scored
against the future World Cup winners.

I think an incredible calm
came over that team.

Because everyone was focused,
everyone knew how strong he was,

everyone knew...

what he was capable of,
and maybe what he wasn't capable of.

And this was all bundled together
with Franz Beckenbauer,

who then also influenced the players.

This gave us great self-confidence.

And that let's you achieve things
that maybe...

wouldn't have been possible before.

The great thing was
that on days after a match

we often got the day off.

Franz wanted us all to get a massage,
be taken care of,

to not leave the hotel
right after the match.

But on the day after, after our
recovery training,

he would say: "See you tomorrow."

Having the right roommate is extremely
important during a tournament like that.

You're like a married couple: you have
to get on with each other for six weeks.

And you need to feel at ease
to play in a major tournament.

Even before the World Cup,

I'd always shared a room
with Andreas Brehme,

my teammate and friend,
who I thought of as a brother.

We knew everything about each other,
because if, over the years,

you share a room
for more than 150 days,

you know everything
about the other guy.

You know about his private life,
his problems.

You share your joys with him,
and so on and so forth.

So for me, and for Andi too,

it was absolutely clear that we were going
to be spending those weeks together.

I was very happy with Andreas Kopke.

And we always very nicely said good night
and good morning to each other.

With Pierre Littbarski it was always
very funny and also very varied.

And it really was nice
because it was so intimate and private.

Almost no one from outside got in here.

It's midday now.

Here we can see the bathroom.

And this is the view
from the window.

I'd just bought the camera

and I thought:
"The World Cup is a unique experience,

I'll just start filming."

And this is my corner,

which is very untidy,
I have to admit.

I didn't know how much stuff
I'd filmed with that camera.

It was just a bit of fun,
and I didn't film for very long.

I think I only filmed right at the
start, here in Erba and in Milan.

And after that,
the World Cup really got going properly.

MILAN, 19 June 1990
3rd group match: Germany-Columbia.

The third home game

for Germany's
national team at this World Cup.

This is a game
that should be a formality.

We'd already qualified
after the first two victories.

We were through
but wanted to stay top of the group.

So we could continue playing in Milan.

So that we wouldn't have to leave
our camp here in Milan for somewhere else.

That would've meant
the bother of having to move,

of maybe having to play
in southern Italy.

Being in Milan
was easier for the fans too.

They just had to cross the Alps
and they were in the stadium.

You need experienced players,
you need a good hierarchy within a team.

There were those
who simply went along with things,

who didn't ask many questions.

It was like that for me.

As a young player,
I was just happy to be there and...

and I would definitely...

have run for 150 minutes
and not just 90,

just so I could be there.

You want to prove to everyone,
especially in the team,

that you're a good footballer,
that you're...

rightfully a member
of a group of elite players

who might possibly go on
to win the World Cup.

And here comes Higuita.

What a brazen goalkeeper!

Typical South Americans:

good players, good footballers, and...

It was a decent game,
a bit slow-paced.

Because Andreas Brehme
had received two yellow cards,

Hans Pfllgler got to play.

I was glad to be able to play,

but it wasn't easy for me
to play better than I did.

I played, didn't make any major errors.
But I didn't play well either.

But that happens.

Playing against
South American teams is never easy.

They're especially motivated
when they play against Europeans.

That's a foul by Augenthaler,
he pulled Valderrama's shirt.

Yeah, I fouled him a little bit
and he almost "died".

Valderrama!
He was an actor par excellence.

He was a very provocative player,
in that game too,

where he was practically "dead"
for ten minutes due to an "injury".

Then he jumped up off the stretcher

and sprinted back onto the pitch
faster than he'd run all match.

I remember it well because
I gave the assist to Pierre Littbarski.

It's always annoying

remembers that goal.

I'm very popular there,
I can go there anytime.

That really rankled me,
because the game was in the bag

and it was totally unnecessary.

And there's the final whistle.
- A fair 1-1 between Germany and Columbia.

It was vital that we didn't lose.

And so at the end of the day
we were happy with the draw.

It went according to plan,
let's put it that way.

We had a press conference every day.

We always held a "press hour”
for 60 minutes, just before lunch.

It was a ritual.

A lot of our players
found the press hour very stressful.

But I enjoyed it: I knew all
the journalists,

and we simply turned it around.

Yeah, Litti had this idea:

"Why should the journalists
always interview us every day?

Let's turn the tables on them."

Bodo lligner grabbed the camera.
I think we were both wearing sunglasses.

And then I interviewed the journalists.

Are you afraid to appear on TV,
or why are you still on the radio?

I am fundamentally anxious
about appearing on TV.

My mum always says:
"Stay where you are, lad: out of sight.

It's better for the listeners
and the viewers."

Could you briefly compare
the 1974 and 1990 teams?

Was the '74 team better?

The '74 team
is older now.

Right, they're older.

It helped prevent cabin fever.
A World Cup is a long tournament.

It's different to German rivers
like the Havel and the Spree, right?

It's interesting to see
what Lake Como actually looks like.

But you're not really a water person,
are you?

No, it's not my thing at all.
- What about water-skiing?

Water, flying, fire: I hate them all.

It's only when you return

that certain memories come back to you.

I can remember us messing about...

by the pool.

In the pool!
- In the pool!

I'm wearing good trousers
for the first time in three weeks.

The memories are slowly coming back,
seeing the...

Seeing the hotel there or...

I'm slowly starting
to remember the boat trip.

The whole team went on a boat trip.

Do you remember where to?
- We just sailed around the lake a bit.

We sailed around
then stopped off somewhere

for coffee and a bite to eat.

And Franz was holding
Klaus Augenthaler's baby.

Right... - We were scared
he might drop the baby into the water.

Franz was so clumsy with the baby.
He was better at football, right?

We were in seventh heaven from the start
and stayed there for the whole tournament.

We looked out for each other
like we were family.

And if anyone had a go at one of us,
another one of us would say: "Shut up!"

I honestly have to say

it really was a terrific team, and...

I played in a few other tournaments...

but it wasn't the same.

It's always great when 35 years later
you're teaching at a training camp

and a dad says to his son:

"Look, there's a World Cup winner."
- Yeah.

And that makes me proud when the dad,
who's younger than me,

tells his son
that when he was seven or eight or ten:

"I saw him win the World Cup."

And it makes me proud...

that people are still telling their kids:
"He won the World Cup in 1990."

MILAN, 24 June 1990
Round of 16: Netherlands-Germany

Andy had been talked up as
our star player,

but he wasn't picked for
the initial games.

So that was...

Andy didn't threaten to go home once,
he did it three times.

"Go home"?

That's a total exaggeration.

But it's true to say
that I was extremely frustrated.

I said: "What can you do?
You can't go home.

Your football career will be over."

I would never have gone home.
It's possible that I was really angry.

And...
But Franz always reassured me nonetheless.

And whenever I talked to other players,
I always got the feeling...

Or Lothar would always say: "Don't drive
yourself mad. Franz is thinking of you."

So everyone kept motivating me,

and that was good.

Only 16 players could be picked:
the eleven who played

and the five subs.

The other six had to sit in the stands.

They were all excellent players,
stars of their clubs.

And now you're
watching the World Cup from the stands.

For me, it was definitely
not easy to cope with mentally.

If you're in the squad, you want to play.
But it just didn't happen.

If I'm honest,

I went to Italy with the intention
of being the first-choice goalkeeper.

But then I realized it wasn't to be
and that I was just part of the group.

I say "just”:
I was incredibly proud of it.

Even a second-choice goalie
can make a contribution.

Andy Kopke was third-choice.

I'd say that we goalkeepers
worked well together and got on well.

And then, unfortunately,
five of them never played at all.

You need to reassure those players

who aren't playing more than
the eleven who are.

If the players who haven't been picked
suddenly turn nasty,

because it gets too much for them,
it's over.

Learning to accept the role
allotted to you as a player is an art.

Because winning as a team
is all that matters.

So sometimes you may have
to put your own ego to one side.

At that time,
it really was extreme against Holland.

We weren't exactly enemies,
but we were great rivals.

So we wanted to win at all costs.

It's hard for an outsider to understand
the pressure we were under.

A stern gaze from Franz Beckenbauer.

Rudi Véller...

Badly fouled.
That must be a yellow card!

I'd always known Franz Rijkaard
as a sporting, top footballer.

He was probably annoyed
because he'd fouled me...

in the centre of the pitch.
Nothing bad: a trailing leg.

And he'd got a yellow card.

Totally correct decision:
Rudi would've been off and away.

The worst thing was that he spat at me.

I was totally flummoxed.

I couldn't believe it.

You can foul someone,
foul them deliberately.

But spitting
in someone's face is as low as it gets.

I couldn't believe at first that...

that Frank Rijkaard
had really done it. None of us...

could believe it.
- And now a yellow card...

for Rudi Voller.

I don't understand referees like this.

He gives a yellow card for a pretty brutal
foul, and then because Véller complains

he gets the same punishment.
I just don't get it.

Let's watch it again.
Véller fouled full-on.

Watch out! - The ball bounced
towards Van Breukelen,

the Dutch keeper,

and Rudi chased after it, but...

Rudi Véller looks absolutely furious.

He's totally blown his top.

I said "Come on!"
and pulled Rudi away

in case the ref gave him another card,
which is what happened.

The Dutch players made out
that he'd fouled the keeper.

And then both players got a second yellow.
I thought: "This is unbelievable.”

He's shown him red!
- That's absolutely scandalous!

Unbelievable!

And Rijkaard as well!

I just couldn't believe it.
This was the World Cup,

and it could've been over for me
at that point.

It was terrible.

Then Rijkaard suddenly spat at him again,
and Rudi was totally stunned.

And I know

that they continued to discuss the matter,
down in the dressing rooms.

And I believe fists flew.

I tried to control myself,

but we had a bit of a tussle afterwards,

down in the tunnel.

We were determined not to let
such an unjust decision

help the Dutch get through
to the next round.

It gave all of us a huge shot...

of strength and energy.

We were all fuming
after that incident.

We were furious.

We were really, really angry.
We were extremely aggressive

in our thoughts.

My feeling about the match was:
"We have to avenge Rudi Vdller."

I noticed myself during the game

that we were trying
to pay them back for it.

Frank Rijkaard's sending-off
really hurt them.

He was a key player for the Dutch.

And then ten vs. ten:
Jurgen had space,

he was able to demonstrate
his enormous willingness to run.

A terrific solo effort
by Jiirgen Klinsmann.

It was said Jurgen was clumsy.

But he put in
a sensational performance.

Maybe it was the stickler
for justice in him

that made him
open the throttle even more.

Because the red card against Rudi Voller
was so patently unfair.

He put on a firework display,
the like of which I've rarely seen.

That gives Klinsmann the opportunity

to shake off Van Tiggelen again.

What a performance!

Klinsmann! Klinsmann!

And the crowd are celebrating him.

It was like he was running for our lives.
He was all over the pitch,

he was creating goal threats.
I'd say he gave the performance...

of his life that day.

Buchwald.

Yes!
- Yes!

7-0 through Jurgen Klinsmann!

In the 51st minute of the game!

Cheer up, Hans!
Germany lead by 1-0!

Guido Buchwald,
normally not technically great,

reminded me of a Brazilian
with this assist.

And now applause
for Jiirgen Klinsmann,

who's maybe put in
his best international performance.

He's scored a goal.
He's run his socks off.

Jurgen really was the hero.

Not just because of the goal,
but because of the way

he gave his all for the team.

Six minutes to go.

Germany lead 1-0.
In comes the corner from Littbarski.

Guido Buchwald.

Brehme. Go on, shoot!

Yes! That's it!

We've done it!

We're in the quarter-finals!
Andi Brehme had a quiet game.

Until he fired off a magnificent shot

in the 85th minute of the game!

When he took the ball
and put it into the far corner,

that was probably
one of our best goals.

I think it was the most important win.

You could see it on
Franz Beckenbauer's face.

He blows the final whistle!

Germany are in the quarter-finals...

after beating the Netherlands 2-1.

We should talk about the referee.

I saw you fuming on the touchline,

and I'm certain you didn't agree
with every decision today.

Well, I don't know how long
we're supposed to put up with it.

Some of the refereeing decisions
at this World Cup have beggared belief.

And the decisions we saw today
made a mockery of the tournament.

Lothar and I flew to Rome
for a FIFA meeting.

Lothar came because
of an unfair yellow card.

They discussed our cards,
his and then mine.

I hoped I wouldn't be suspended,

but FIFA didn't rescind my
red card, and...

I was suspended for a game,
which hurt.

We had a little time.

We were supposed to fly back
in the late afternoon...

to Milan, but back then...

You have to imagine:
there were no social media,

no mobiles,
no mobiles with cameras.

We pretended we'd missed the flight,
which no one checked.

And we went for a lovely swim in the sea.

In Fiumicino,
which is close to Rome Airport.

Then we had a lovely meal in a restaurant
run by a friend of mine there,

drank two or three bottles of wine.

And then we flew back to Milan.

That was the end
of the matter for me.

I won the World Cup with my mates.

Life goes on, you know?

But I think it's bothered him ever since

Because it was untypical for him,
and because it kept being shown.

I think it was a much harder situation
for Frank to deal with than it was for me.

It still gives me goose bumps

when I remember
the terrific victories we won here.

We played five matches here,

so it almost felt like our home ground.

The Italians were always on our side.

We were like their home team.

This stadium was the foundation
for us winning the Cup.

I'm sitting pretty much
level with the spot

where | put in the cross to
Jurgen Klinsmann.

So it's bringing back lots of memories.

The whole place was rocking,

and it was...

a goal that I'll probably never forget.

We had so much fun together,
which characterised us as a group.

And I think that people on the outside

also sensed a little bit
that we were a team

made up of personalities
who among each other

became closer friends
with each day that passed.

I think that when you
win the World Cup...

Germany has won the World Cup four times.
I took part once,

and you're a member
of the best team in the world.

I think that's something

which influences you
for the rest of your life.

We were like a family.

And Franz celebrated that, of course.

And I think the crucial factor

was that we were
such a harmonious group.

There was no cabin fever,
which is what Franz wanted.

We were able to move
about freely, we were able to have fun.

The fact that our families were there,
in a hotel in the next town,

removed a lot of the tension.

Because even the players that were unhappy
because they hadn't been picked

were able to get their frustration
off their chests

with their girlfriends or wives,

which put them back on an even keel.

That was a good thing.

Holger's studying our opponents again.

Franz did give us time off,

including occasional days off.

And everyone did whatever they wanted to.

Some players' rooms
were around the corner.

Lothar sometimes
took a boat out on the lake.

I invited the lads to come out
on the motorboat and go water-skiing.

I organised activities
to keep their spirits up.

I went with Lothar a couple of times.

He drives a boat like a footballer:
at full throttle.

He was more dangerous in a car.

I wouldn't have got in a boat with him
because I knew he drove like a lunatic.

I stayed mostly in the hotel.

I'm easily pleased. There was a
great pool.

The German Football Association
had it built for us. It was great.

There was a kind of "pool syndicate".

We used to enjoy meeting up
by the pool after training.

And we felt really at ease there.

For the three Bayern Munich players,
the so-called "Bayern Mafia",

it was their favourite activity.

Litti always had his own
suitcase with him,

his stereo equipment.

And he used to turn the thing
up full whack.

He always played Hot Chocolate:
"So You Win Again".

I still know it by heart.

Play the pawn of spades, Olaf!

We all played cards: Bavarian Schafkopf.

I was always the scorekeeper.
When you play cards,

someone has to keep score and
look after the kitty. That was always me.

We often played cards
when we had some time off.

I remember us borrowing mopeds from
some lads

who were standing around outside.

They were all souped-up
old pieces of junk.

Litti went down and asked
if we could borrow them.

So we could ride to Como.

They were all fans,
so it was no problem.

And so four of us...

rode to Como...

on these rickety old mopeds.

The handlebars on mine
kept sliding down.

The second one had a broken light.
The third one had a broken saddle.

Nowadays,
the police would stop you right away.

We rode to Como and back
without protective gear.

Then Franz found out about it.

Instead of making a huge fuss about it,
he had three new mopeds brought in.

These were safe, had brakes that
worked properly and weren't souped-up.

That way, he could make sure
there were no accidents.

Franz knew everything.

But he trusted us as well.

I think if we'd done anything too extreme,

Franz would've reacted.

I think there's an art
to keeping someone on a "long lead".

Although I think it was more a question
of giving the players a certain leeway

and watching to see
if they could use it or cope with it.

And I think...

I think Franz had a good feel for that.

MILAN, 1 July 1990
Quarter-final Germany-Czechoslovakia.

Franz Beckenbauer prepared us
very well before each match.

People say that everything
came easily to him.

But that's not true. His pre-match
preparation with us was always meticulous.

When he talked about the opponent,
you shrank in your chair:

"He's brilliant. He's brilliant.

He's brilliant as well."

And you kept shrinking until he said:
"But you lot are better."

And that's what set him apart: you sat up
straight again, your chest puffed up,

and you waited for him to say:
"Go and warm up now."

We always believed,

when we ran out onto the pitch,
that we were the best team.

I was over the moon
about being in the first eleven.

And I felt some pressure, of course,

about replacing Rudi Vdller,
which isn't easy.

But I didn't put myself under too much
pressure. I knew what I was capable of.

And Franz wouldn't have picked me
if he'd thought I couldn't do it.

I sat up in the stands
with my fingers crossed for the lads.

At first,
it was like Franz Beckenbauer said:

"We're the favourites.
Who are Czechoslovakia?"

That's how we played
the first 30 minutes.

And now a penalty to Germany
in the 24th minute.

And the captain
is going to take it himself.

Lothar Matthéus.

Unstoppable!

Germany lead 1-0 through Lothar Matthaus!

We're leading 1-0,

they get a red card, and we fail...

to dominate them.

We ran around aimlessly.

And we played so badly
that Franz blew a gasket.

Franz Beckenbauer
is not liking what he's seeing.

Our tactics were disorganised,
we were too hectic, kept losing the ball.

They suddenly turned it around:

the team that was outnumbered
began to dominate play.

And now Klinsmann.

Too obvious.

And Franz is swearing.

I remember him saying during the game:

"Stop passing to Klinsmann,
he's losing every ball."

I clearly remember the half-time talk,
where Franz Beckenbauer said to me:

"Stop trying to play like Pelé.
You're not Pele.”

It was because I'd tried two back-heels,
neither of which had come off.

And so he had a quick go at me.

"You're Klinsmann, not Pelé."

"You're absolutely fucking awful!"

He was going totally ballistic
on the touchline.

For us on the bench,

it was a catastrophe.

None of us wanted to be put on.

Franz was so livid
that we were, of course, all thinking:

"For God's sake,
please don't put me on."

He decides 10 put Andy Molter on.

Andy said: "Who's coming off, boss?"
and Franz just said: "Take your pick."

Just imagine: it's the World Cup
and he tells

one of his players to make
the substitution.

That's how bad they were.

He called Lothar over to the touchline
and said: "What kind of captain are you?

It's your job to tell the team
what to do."

I remember very well

that he would've put the ball boy on,

if the rules hadn't prevented him
from doing that.

And he would definitely
have played better than us.

The game is over.

First the good news:

Germany are through to the semi-final...

in Turin.

We'd won 1-0,

and we were actually
really happy with the result.

Only one person wasn't happy,
and that was Franz.

You were fuming
when you arrived here.

Yes, it was an awful performance.

I simply cannot understand

how we played worse against ten Czechs
than against eleven.

You expressed yourself
very clearly there.

What did you say to the players?
- I can't repeat that here.

Franz lost his temper.

He waited till we were all
in the dressing room.

Anyone who had no business being there
was told to leave: "Get out!"

Suddenly the door shook.

Franz slammed the door shut
and started yelling.

Oh, he turned the air blue!

It was the only time
I ever saw him like that.

He kicked the ice bucket over.
- There were ice cubes flying everywhere.

Apparently, he hurt one of his feet badly
and was hobbling around for two days.

The ice cubes were flying,
and it was rather bizarre

because we were celebrating
a quarter-final victory.

And then Franz came in
and brought the mood right down.

Everyone took cover.
Everyone. Including Lothar.

It was incredible.
He let everything out for five minutes.

Andi Brehme was the first one who said:

"Come on, we're in the semi-final.
Let's celebrate."

And things calmed down a bit after that.

I surprised myself
with that outburst.

But I like this team
and I want them to play well.

They didn't do that towards the end,
and so I was a bit grumpy.

His reaction was a big wake-up call
for the team.

It told us never to play as badly again.

It told us we had to get back to
performing to the best of our abilities.

It was a dressing-down
at the right time.

I went on to become head coach
of the German team myself.

From 2000/2002, the World Cup.
So I know, of course,

that as gratifying as the job can be,
it can also be very stressful,

having to take responsibility

for a task like that,

being together for weeks on end.

We played well,
but there were times when he wasn't happy.

And it bothers you.
It goes around in your head at night.

Sometimes you wake up
and worry about what to improve.

It was stressful for Franz.

Franz always hovered over everyone else,
so of course he stayed in the tower room.

But I don't think
I was ever allowed in there.

Franz was enthroned up there.

He had the best view from up there,
of course.

He knew when
someone came and when someone went.

He mentioned that one time.

I had my car
parked there, my VW Beetle convertible.

And as we were leaving for a training

session by coach, he turned
to me and said:

"I don't always see your Beetle here,
Jurgen.”

And I said: "Right, boss.
I'm not always here either.”

Thomas Berthold and me
were in the room below his.

It was very small and cramped,
but also great fun.

We were totally separate
from everyone else there.

And he always had to pass our room
on the staircase.

I saw that he'd left the door to his room
open a crack.

So I crept in and was greeted

by a huge stack of VHS cassettes.

I was often invited up to the tower room.

We often sat there together
for many hours in the evenings

He had loads of cassettes back then,
some of which we watched.

They didn't have whole games on them,
just excerpts from our opponents' matches,

excerpts from our matches.

"Quick, rewind it!
Look at him there! And him there!"

And that was rather tedious.

But Franz was obsessed with detail.

He left nothing to chance,

even though it all seemed easy
from the outside.

Now and then I would see him
standing outside philosophising.

Sometimes he came to our room,
to Klaus Augenthaler and me.

We were both smokers at the time.
- Sometimes he would make a sign.

And we'd have a smoke together.

He enjoyed that,

and he was, of course...

As a person,
he was like a father to us.

He also let us live
that feeling of togetherness.

He didn't point at the clock

if a couple of players were in the bar
at 11 p.m. enjoying a glass of wine.

Franz gave us freedoms,
let us be adults.

And I don't think the team
took advantage of that.

I think we profited from it and were
able to give Franz something back.

TURIN, 4 July 1990
Semi-final Germany vs. England

Germany or England?
Who will make it to the final?

That will be decided here tonight
at the Stadio delta Alpi.

Playing against England
is always special, it's a classic.

Especially in a semi-final.

Franz made it clear to us

that we would need to be tough
and resilient against England.

I thought my hopes of playing
were going to be dashed,

and I was terribly nervous.

But Franz put Olaf Thon on instead of me,

which was the right decision.

It didn't really matter who played.

Everyone was in top form, even the ones
who'd spent two weeks on the bench.

Olaf Thon.

That's a terrific shot.

England was the most evenly-matched game
of the World Cup: end-to-end action.

No kick-and-rush from England,
just proper football.

It was probably the match
with the highest quality

because the two teams
were on an equal footing.

Matthaus.

The ball hasn't gone out!
- Go on!

Keep going!

We knew our own strengths,
but also those of the England team.

And I think everyone involved
knew it was going to be close game.

It's taken a deflection and gone in!

It was gripping right to the end.

Everyone knows
the English can't take penalties,

so we held on
for a penalty shoot-out.

The game's over.
Everyone in the centre circle. Penalties.

I was normally
a designated penalty-taker,

but I'd had to go off injured
in the first half.

I knew we had
two or three good penalty-takers

and one or two
that were a bit shaky.

Just before the final whistle,
I missed an absolute sitter with a header.

And I was so angry with myself
because I hadn't put it in.

So when Franz asked "What do you think?",
I said: "I'm furious.

I should've clinched it.

There'd be no penalties
if I'd put the header in."

So he said:
"OK, we'll pick someone else."

The first thing, of course, is to find
the five who're self-confident enough

to step up and take the penalties.

Players like Andi Brehme, Lothar Matthéus,

Thomas Berthold and Olaf Thon
immediately said yes when I asked them

if they'd be prepared to take penalties.
Kalle Riedler wasn't quite sure.

At some point, he started looking
for penalty-takers three and four.

He came up to me and said:
"Kalle, how about you?"

And I said: "I've haven't scored a penalty
in my entire professional career."

He immediately walked away
and started asking other players.

Stefan Reuter,
who I'd been banking on, said:

"No, I'd rather not.
Pick someone else."

I'd taken some penalties
in my career but not scored any.

Apart from one at the third attempt
against PAOK Thessaloniki.

When Franz asked,
I plucked up my courage and said:

"I'll take one."

And he replied: "No, not you."

I said: "Why not?" "He said:
"It's a penalty kick, not a corner.”

Then I thought: "Come on,
before you let a defender take one."

So I said:
"Franz, I feel up to it. I'll take one."

You know that if you miss
you'll be national laughing stock.

So I was very aware

of the pressure
that was in store for me,

that I had to score.

I still don't know
why he got to take one.

Come on, Bodo. All or nothing.

I was totally relaxed,
not nervous at all.

Partly because a goalkeeper
has more to win than to lose.

If a penalty-taker misses,
that's dramatic.

Shilton prepares himself.

But Lothar hammered that one in: 2-2.

He's taking a shorter run-up
than the others.

Bodo almost saved it!

I had my doubts about Kalle Riedler
because he wasn't sure at first.

And I said to Rudi Vbller,
who was standing next to me:

"If Kalle converts this penalty,
we'll win the shoot-out.”

I'd decided
where I was going to shoot.

I'd seen which side Peter Shilton
had favoured for the other penalties.

He was almost 40, I think,
and no longer the fastest.

And he'd always gone
for the bottom right-hand corner.

So I decided to aim for top left,

from my point of view, halfway up
towards the top right-hand corner.

I thought that would work.

Karl-Heinz Riedler.
3-2 to England.

And 3-3.
- Wonderful shot.

Bodo lligner was a really
strong goalkeeper.

But I had a hunch
that he might not be particularly useful

in a penalty shootout.

I knew him from training,
where he'd displayed qualities

that stood out more.

He's not the kind of keeper who can sense
which way a penalty is going to go.

We'd done a lot of penalty training

and Bodo had always been a total disaster.

Franz had always said
it wasn't my strong point.

I saw that differently back then,
I felt differently about it.

And I was totally confident
that I would save at least one penalty.

Olaf Thon is only taking
a three-metre run-up.

I feel so sorry for poor Chris Waddle.

Franz Beckenbauer and the others
ran onto the pitch in their suits.

I remember their Bordeaux-coloured
jackets and their ties.

What an ugly tie that was,
but at the time it was modern.

And there was massive jubilation,
in the dressing room too.

And they cheered for Bodo lligner,
the goalkeeper, whose save was the reason

why England missed two penalties.

Bodo! Bodo! Bodo! Bodo!

I have to say that Bodo surpassed
himself during that penalty shoot-out

and also saved the decisive shot.

He did brilliantly,

and I think it was exceptional.

I'd really dreamt about that as a kid.

It was definitely the dream
of that generation back then.

Maybe lads today dream more
about becoming influencers,

which is sometimes easier
than putting in years of hard work

and coming up through
all the youth and national teams,

throwing yourself about in the
mud in winter

and putting up with the heat in summer.

And when the coach tells you
to keep going, it isn't easy.

People see you on the pitch,

they read about the Cup
and how much money the players earn.

But some of us were physically sick

during those early morning
training sessions,

running around the track again and again
against the stopwatch.

People shouldn't forget
how much work goes into it.

Then we packed our suitcases.

And we were in really high spirits
when we went to Rome, the Eternal City,

to play in the World Cup final there.

And it was clear to us,
it was the feeling in the team...

that we were going
to be win the World Cup.

There was no doubt about it.
I was sure we were going to win the Cup.

8 July 1990, ROME
Argentina-Germany

The roads were
lined with people.

And the closer we got to the stadium,
the more of them there were.

Lots of Germans,
but Italians fans too.

The cops really enjoyed it.

They rode ahead of us on motorbikes.

If any cars were in our way, they banged
on the bonnets with their batons.

Just driving into the Stadio Olimpico
was incredible.

With the pine forests in front of it
and the whole backdrop

of crowds of German fans.

It was an incredible feeling.

You enjoy the journey
to the stadium,

you take it all in,
it makes you euphoric.

I was looking forward to the final.

And we got to the stadium early
before the match.

And we sat on the grass in the
centre circle and took photos.

We really were very self-confident
as a team.

All around this stadium, ladies
and gentlemen,

the Olympic Stadium in Rome,

which you can now see on your screens,

the atmosphere has been fantastic
since last night.

The German and Italian fans
have joined forces.

They're cheering together...

Argentina had knocked Italy out,
so they were on our side again in Rome

because we had Rudi Voller,
the hero of Rome, in our ranks.

So it felt like a home match again.

Everyone, including the Italians,
wanted us to win the final.

It was a wonderful.

We were incredibly focused.

You could see on all of our faces

that we were all totally aware

that we weren't going
to screw up this chance.

The team were self-confident,
bursting with self-confidence.

But they weren't arrogant,
don't think that.

They were confident.

And there was no question in our minds

that we wouldn't do it.

He said to Guido Buchwald:
"Guido, you're going up against Maradona."

But then he said quite honestly:
"But you're better.

You're in the best form of your life."

He told me to stick close to Maradona.

To keep him out of the game.

To stop him getting the ball.

Even when you don't have the ball,

you can force the player you're marking
to take the ball with his back to you.

I didn't sleep very well the night before.

I kept going through all my moves
in my head,

thinking about what I'd do
if Maradona moved in a particular way.

Well...

I was nervous before every match.

I remember saying to myself...

"You're in the final now."
I remember the atmosphere in the stadium.

And I remember coming up out of the tunnel
and seeing the World Cup there.

And I thought to myself:
"I've put myself through so much:

the injuries,
the training sessions when I was in agony.

I'm not going home without that cup.”

I have to admit
to all of you out there

that even we, and I hope
it's no different for you at home,

have sweaty hands
in anticipation of this final.

The tension was huge anyway.

And Franz made his standard statement:

"Go out there and play football."

You don't need to say much.

Before a final like that.

And we're off.
The World Cup final

between Argentina and Germany has begun.

Free kick from Brehme.

And...! Rudi Vobller.

A fantastic first attempt on goal
from the German team.

It was a very one-sided final.

We were totally dominant.

And I don't think our goalkeeper,
Bodo lligner,

had much to do at all.

I didn't make eye contact
with any of them.

They were all too far away.

We kept the Argentinians out of the game.

We recovered the ball quickly,
put together good combinations.

The German midfield is well set up.

They were shit-scared of us

because we were so strong
and so focused

that they thought:
"Oh God, we're in for it here."

We had five, six, seven golden
opportunities

to put ourselves one or two goals ahead.

Littbarski leaves three men
standing and...

- Ah! - My oh my!

The German team
have played brilliantly so far.

We knew we had to be patient.
Against Maradona,

who was a player, of course,

who still had sufficient ability
to decide that final on his own.

We knew if he got the ball
he could make deadly passes

or beat our players one-v-one.

But we knew our Guido
would neutralise him.

Wherever Maradona goes,
Buchwald is already there.

The artist vs. the craftsman.

I think Buchwald
has elevated his craft to an art tonight.

With his long sliding tackles,

Guido Buchwald was able
to get his foot in anywhere.

And he had just one task that match:
to neutralise Diego.

Buchwald is all over him...

He's like a millipede.

Maradona was probably the best
footballer in the world at that time,

and Guido totally neutralised him.

He totally spoiled Maradona's fun
that night.

Guido was up against
the best footballer in world.

And where was he?

Sometimes he looked up at me
and said: "You again."

And at some point he realised:

"I've no chance tonight."

The match developed in such a way

that we had more of the ball,
had goal-scoring opportunities.

Augenthaler was brought down
by their keeper: a stonewall penalty.

But the ref didn't give it.
- Augenthaler! Augenthaler!

And...

He has to give that!
- It's a stonewall penalty.

Augenthaler's heart
almost missed a beat there.

We didn't have time to get angry
about not being given a penalty.

Now, years later, I often think
about how well I controlled the ball.

I can see it when I close my eyes.

And if the keeper hadn't fouled me,
I probably would've made it 1-0.

Nowadays, with VAR,
it would definitely have been a penalty.

So I do remember it,

because we were angry, of course.

At the end of the day,
that should've been the penalty.

Two or three days before,
during training here in Erba,

I'd said to Rudi:
"I'll bring the ball out from midfield

and you go
to the inside right or inside left.

Then I'll pass to you
and you can finish it off."

We'd never done it before.
Just two days before the final.

Then during the final in Rome,
I get the ball on the inside right.

The Argentinian guy comes out. I pass
the ball into Rudi's path and he's fouled.

And what's he giving?
He's giving a penalty!

The foul on Augenthaler was ten times
more a penalty than the one on Véller.

I think the Mexican referee
had finally seen enough.

It was the amount,

the accumulation of fouls
committed by the Argentinians.

The ref could've decided either way.

But it was a case of corrective justice.

It was controversial, of course.
I can understand the Argentinians,

who protested loudly to the ref.

Who's going to take it?

I say Lothar Matthéus.
- I say Andi Brehme.

One of the studs had come off
the boot I usually wore.

And I'd changed my boots at halftime.

For some boots that had come out
specially for the World Cup.

And they were half a size too big.

I wear European size seven.

And these were seven and a half.

Wearing new boots...

does feel strange,

but I didn't want to be taken off
because I didn't have my usual boots.

Andi knew I had new boots on,
and I said: "And.i...

I'm not taking it."
It took me two seconds to decide:

"I don't feel confident."

Andi and me had an implicit
understanding, like brothers.

He gave it up,
although he was the number one.

I take my hat off to him for that.
It was the correct decision.

The smartest decision
I made in my entire career

was to not take that penalty.

I remember thinking:
"What should I say to Andi?"

So I said to him:
"If you score this, we're champions."

I immediately cringed and thought:
"What have I said?"

And Andi replied:
"Thanks a million!"

I could've gone for a pizza,
because I knew,

whether he took it
with his left or right foot,

that he was going to score.

I was totally sure of it.

In the aftermath, he told me

that he shot harder with his left
and more accurately with his right.

Andreas Brehme was born

without the "nervousness gene”:
he was never nervous.

So it was clear he was going to score.

The only question for me
was being in the right position

so I could run over to him and celebrate.

Yes!
- Yes!

Goal for Germany! 1-0!

Through Andreas Brehme!

At the World Cup in 1986,

in the quarter-final
against Mexico in Monterrey,

Andi Brehme scored a penalty with his
left foot during the penalty shootout.

And four years later...

he scored the decisive penalty in the
final with his right.

Just think about that.

It's an achievement
that's impossible to replicate.

For me, Andreas Brehme...

is maybe the most complete player
I've ever seen...

coupled with a human warmth that...

I never once saw him angry.

He was so incredibly laid-back

He was the only one who could
approach any other member of the team

and tell him exactly what he thought,
without any ifs or buts.

That was Andi Brehme.
He would speak his mind to Lothar.

He would speak his mind to Rudi
and the rest of us:

"Come on lads, this just won't do."

Andi Brehme was our key player.

Maybe because he could shoot
just as well with his right or left foot.

He was...
He was a complete one-off.

It's awful that's he's no longer here.

He was the one...

He was the one
who won us the World Cup.

It was a terrible shock.
I couldn't believe it

when I heard
that he'd died in bed at night...

of a heart attack.
It was a huge shock.

He was much too young.
He was the same age as me.

Yes.

And...

It was a huge loss.
It is a huge loss.

I still sometimes think...

when I pick up my mobile phone:
"I can't call him anymore.

I'll never see him again."

When you were so close to someone...

they're always with you.

While we're on the subject:

Andi always had my back,
always supported me.

But I always did the same for him.

And so I would say
that my relationship with Andi...

was the closest I ever had...

to another football player.

All of you at home
can break out the champagne now.

He should blow the final whistle,
he's gone two minutes over.

We're counting the seconds.

I kept looking at the clock:
"Blow the final whistle!"

We couldn't be sure.

Maradona could always score
in the last minute.

I was euphoric
because I knew we'd won

that you do all that training for.

You work yourself to the bone,

put in all those extra sessions
to be able to experience that.

Quite rightly,

after a first-class performance,

Germany are winners
of the football World Cup 1990.

It's every young boy's dream

to become a footballer, play for his
country and win the World Cup.

And that dream
came true for all of us back then.

And I think we all had that
at the back of our minds.

Winning the World Cup
is the measure of all things.

It's a funny thing:

your team might be German champions,
which is a great success for everyone.

But then the next year,
it's someone else.

But you're always
a World Cup winner.

However long ago it was,
you always remain a World Cup winner.

Olympic Stadium, Rome

It's an incredible moment.
At that time,

in that moment, you can't take in
everything that's happening.

You were just happy.

There was lots of shouting and cheering
going on around you.

Lots of people hugged you,
embraced you, kissed you.

It was incredible.

I think everyone
who takes part in a World Cup

has achieved a special goal.

And I had the good fortune
of experiencing that World Cup

together with a team,
with a trainer, with backroom staff

that were so successful.

It was a tremendous honour for me.

Franz was the kind of person

who needed a moment of quiet reflection
in all that hubbub.

And I think the main reason for that

was because he'd said he was going
to retire

as coach after the 1990 World Cup.

And I think he was thinking
about that again,

about having said
he was going to retire

and then winning the World Cup
as a coach.

He'd won it as a player with me
and now won it again as a coach,

as head coach.

And I think Franz
was a little bit sentimental

and just wanted to be on his own

and think his own thoughts
while everyone else celebrated.

Then Helmut Kohl
came into the dressing room.

Which didn't mean a thing to us.

We were too involved
with ourselves.

I think the group of players
that came together in 1990

was a reflection of our society.

East and West Germany were reunited.

Rebuilding Germany
was not going to be easy, of course.

But we all had such a strong desire
to come together, to be together.

Even if there were going to be problems.
Even if we thought and acted differently.

And the 1990 team symbolised that.

And I think Franz

was the perfect person
to bring people together

at that special moment.

I played in other World Cups
that weren't so successful, but it was...

And we had top-quality players,
maybe even more than in 1990.

But the 1990 team had character.

And I'm proud of that.
