Yeah, I bowled as a kid.

I bowled with my family.

I bowled with friends.

It's what you did Saturday.

It's what you did Sunday.

You bowled.

It was cool.

Bowling.

I mean, bowling's a blast.

I mean, it's the ultimate
family entertainment.

You can talk about
having bowled together

and that's about as
apple pie as you can get.

Bowling is by far the most popular
participatory sport in America.

More Americans bowled
last year than voted.

Everybody has fun bowling.

Nobody never has
not fun bowling.

I mean, everybody that's gone to a bowling
center and bowled has had fun doing it.

Even if they throw a gutter
ball, they laugh about it.

They have a good time.

Families spend time
together when they're bowling.

Americans don't spend as much
time as they used to together,

either in bowling leagues
or other common activities.

And that's undermining
our common citizenship.

We have to do
something about that.

It's almost like the
word bowling is funny.

Are people just out of it?

You automatically have a
negative connotation of that word.

What are you doing?

I'm going bowling.

I'm not a bowler much myself, but I
enjoy making fun of people who bowl.

Golf, baseball, and bowlers,
they got a great talent.

They're not athletes now.

What's so hard?

I'm knocking the pins down.

I don't understand
the fucking concept.

Well, when I came in here, I saw a
lot of bowlers eating the hamburgers.

The hamburgers
and the fish steaks.

I think they're eating it
because it's healthy for

them and it just keeps their
mind on bowling, I guess.

It's kind of intimidating to be in the
presence of so many great athletes.

We were not getting
out of this picture that...

Big belly, beer
drinking, smoking idiots.

Yeah.

I mean, that's what the whole
bowling world looked like.

Those perceptions will
tend to linger on because the

people who are making the
judgments aren't involved.

A baby is not born
saying the first words.

Bowling is shit.

That's not the first thing that
comes out of a baby's mouth.

Somehow that
child was taught that.

Unfortunately, perceptions are
very difficult to change over the years.

I mean, it's had that
image since 1950.

You know, in the 50s and
the 60s is where you had

people that really learned
the technique of bowling.

Here, let me show you.

Is that the ball you're using?

Yes, the one in the end.

Do you know how to hold it?

I think so.

You just put your fingers
in the holes and throw it.

Well, there's a little
more to it than that.

See, you put your
fingers in there like that.

You must think we're
not very bright, but really,

this is the first time
we've ever been bowling.

I think the women's
movement contributed to the

death of bowling because
guys can't get out anymore.

You used to be able to come together with
your buddies, have a bunch of Budweiser,

smoke some cigarettes, and
bowl and be away from the family,

and now you got to stay
up and take care of the kids.

In the old days, I think
you could just bail on that.

And it's better for
us, actually, humanity,

that men are more
involved with their kids.

But bowling had to suffer,
and that's a problem.

The reason that bowling
gets no respect in this country

is because bowlers get
no respect in this country.

And the reason bowlers don't get respect is
because they're largely blue-collar guys.

What is that?

That's my Pro Bowler Automatic

So it isn't bowling, when you
get down to it, that gets no respect.

It's the people who
bowl who get no respect.

They get no respect
from the elites.

And these are the same elites
who run most of our culture.

They're the ones who
make movies in this country.

They're the ones
who make television.

They're the ones who
put out newspapers.

This is a snobbery
of the worst kind.

If bowlers were a bunch of
guys who went to Princeton and

Yale and Harvard, bowling
would be as she-she as could be.

I do think there's this sense
that it belongs to a different time.

You know, bowling kind of...

It's kind of like, you know, what
happens at a drive-in movies.

I mean, there's maybe
one in the state now.

And before, you know, back then, it was
a thing to do, was to go to the drive-in.

Even families.

Yeah, even families.

I would say that the master trend, so
to speak, probably the most important

social thing that happened in
the course of the 20th century,

was the privatization of
our leisure time as television.

When television came
into American society,

it was like a lightning
bolt in the 1950s.

It was a big, dramatic change.

microphone at 3.30 on Saturday afternoons.

I've been a part of the rich heritage
of the Professional Bowler's Tour.

A show whose family tree stretches back
to the days when television was an infant.

That's it!

Oh, and Nick
Webber isn't out yet.

I think the first TV show I ever
saw was still in black and white.

Nick Webber's on like six out of the first
seven tournaments in professional bowling.

Hello again, ladies and
gentlemen, I'm Chris Schenkel.

ABC Sports brings you another great
tournament in the Professional Bowling

Association's Firestone
Tournament of Champions.

Bowling was big.

It was bigger than football.

In the 60s and 70s, it
was bigger than football.

There you see it.

It tells the story.

The crowd tells the story.

At that time, all of
the other major sports

were making about the
same amount of money.

I put myself through
college, basically, bowling.

Smile tells a story.

Congenial winner,
Walter Ray Williams.

Twelve years old, I knew I was going to
go out on a PBA tour when I turned 18.

And here I am, hopefully
to win the Firestone.

That was really the
golden age of bowling.

Bowlers were very popular,
and Dick Webber got invited to the

White House a couple of times
to teach the President how to bowl.

I think bowling definitely
was a lot bigger than it is now.

I think that the 60s
and 70s, and really more

the 70s and 80s, the
choices were limited.

And bowling was in a very good position
in front of the wide world of sports.

A great lead-in Saturday afternoon,
Chris Schenkel, great history.

It's been a great
experience to be a part of it.

And to our friends at the
Professional Bowlers Association,

thanks for the memories,
and here's to many more.

Once upon a time in America, bowling
was a perfectly fine recreation and sport.

We watched it on television.

But we live in a
different America.

We live in the United
States of entertainment.

And in the United States
of entertainment, the

one sin you cannot
commit is to bore somebody.

And bowling was
boring America together.

And they didn't want
to watch it on television.

I think that America,
in terms of its vision of

sport, has gone through
an extraordinary change.

It changed athletically.

It changed emotionally.

It changed socially.

It changed spiritually.

And it changed in
every way possible.

And bowling didn't change.

And as a result, its marketing,
its presentation never kept pace.

And as all the other sports kept
pace, they finally outstripped bowling,

and bowling was left in
the Father Knows Best days.

And it wasn't part of the
American sports scene.

Good afternoon, everyone.

Welcome to the finals
of the St. Clair Classic.

Let's meet the finalists
of America's telecast.

Pete Weber.

The last show of the
ABC telecast was in 97.

That's when I actually
started bowling good again

and throwing the ball,
making a lot of TV shows.

Weber and Williams, Jr. Obviously,
with cable and then more than three or

four channels that people could watch,
the ratings for everything started to fall.

It's going to be Weber and Williams, one
and two in the world, in our final round.

Outfitting, huh, partner?

Outfitting.

They started losing
sponsors and, you know,

advertising dollars were
going the wrong direction.

No monies going in or
no monies are coming out.

What they're doing
with it, I have no idea.

But ABC had, you know, they
weren't making money with us.

They had to do something.

Chris, it's fitting that a Weber
will throw the final ball on ABC.

His dad won the first telecast, which
was actually taped in 1962 at Argo Lane.

Right now, Peter
needs two strikes to win.

He must strike.

Whoo!

Wow.

What a game for
our final telecast, Bill.

There he is, number one
in the world, and he's quite

a bowler, and so is his
competitor, Pete Weber.

I think that was probably the most
devastating match I ever had against him.

It was the beginning
of the end for the PBA.

You know, we weren't
convinced it was the beginning

of the end, but pretty
much everyone knew it.

A standing ovation
for Chris Shaker.

It's not so hard to cry either.

Bob, thank you.

Goodbye.

Goodbye.

Giving your whole life to
something, thinking that it'll never die,

it'll never get bad,
and then it does.

And have nothing to back me up, no college,
you know, no other career to step into.

That part of it caught me off
guard, but it was important.

...is the part
that really hurts.

Because you do give your whole
life to it, you don't expect it to die.

You only expect
it to get better.

And when it only gets
worse, you wonder why you

were there and dedicated
to the game for so long.

One time it was the most
watched sport on television.

Professional bowling.

Today it's not.

But it is regaining a place in the
world of televised sports, thanks in large

measure to its new
owners and these cool shirts.

A group of former Microsoft
programmers who decided it

would be more fun to work on
a 7-10 split than Windows XP.

Did you call up your other two
friends and say we could buy

the professional bowling
league for five million dollars?

Yeah.

I thought the PBA was in
danger of dying, so I sent a letter to

the commissioner and saying,
hey, I'm a retired Microsoft guy.

He sent a letter back saying
we're potentially for sale.

So I talked to Rob Glazer.

That whole league is potentially for
sale on the order of five million dollars.

Who buys the whole thing.

He said, yeah, we gotta do that.

That makes perfect sense.

And then Mike Slade heard through the sort
of Microsoft alum grapevine that we were

buying the PBA and he says, I want
in, I want in, I wanna do this thing too.

Chris Peters and his friends, former
Microsoft guys, have hired two fellows

from Nike to run the day-to-day
operations of the PBA.

I think the key is
to gain credibility.

We desperately need
credibility in the tour.

We need to be able to be thought
of as a sport, as a real sport.

We need to be able to be
competitive with other sports.

We're gonna be fighting
for mind space in the TV.

Reintroduction of our
players will be a factor

that we've gotta
spend a lot of time on.

Dimensionalizing the
players, telling their stories,

trying to get people to
understand who they are.

I think the key is to do these
things in conjunction and

to get them to a place where
someone can embrace it all.

And then sell it to sponsors, sell
it to America, sell it to the globe,

and I think we've got a chance.

I think the roots of bowling
are really the roots of America.

When one describes
the average bowler, I think

you do think immediately
of middle class America.

I think you do think
of a blue-collar activity.

I do think that there is an attitude
that bowling is at the low end.

Will we ever overcome it?

I don't know.

As we go down the path of
change, it will affect some people very

positively, but some
people very negatively.

Seated number one, world champion,
whatever, just about everything,

perfect games in anybody,
well the right way up, people.

He's in the Hall of Fame.

He's in the Hall of
Fame in bowling.

He's in the Hall of
Fame in horseshoes.

He's a fantastic bowler,
horseshoe player, in the whole bit.

I've been following his career
for like five, six years now.

And...

what else can I say?

I wish I were him.

When he was a teenager, they
named a dead-eye horseshoe

after Walker Dead-Eye
Williams, Jr. He gets better.

He gets better as time goes on.

He's sort of like a rare wine.

He just gets better
and better and better.

Oh God, you idiots.

Yes, yeah, he's a little bit of a geek, but
Walter is an incredibly intelligent person.

I don't drink.

I don't smoke.

Don't do drugs.

Never have.

If I wasn't bowling for a living, I
probably would either be a teacher,

math, physics, maybe
working for JPL or NASA.

I think my physics degree probably
gives me a little different perspective.

My mother called me from the beauty parlor
one Saturday afternoon, and she said,

there's this horseshoe
pitcher who's a pro

bowler and I want you to
watch him on TV for me.

And I said, okay.

So I turned on bowling.

26 years of age, bowling
out of Stockton, California.

Trails by 14, but could cut the lead to
four with a clutch double here on lane 33.

He likes it.

He's got it.

Oh, what a break.

What a break.

He's beginning to
realize in the future he's

going to be a very tough
customer on the PBA tour.

So I didn't know much about bowling,
and then we met a few months later.

We met later that summer, yeah.

She actually designed
the house, basically, and

she's the one who picked
out almost everything.

It's a little bigger than I would
have done, but it's all right.

If you're the really lucky guest, you
get to stay in what we call the poo

room, which is all these
knick-knacks and stuff, which is...

and all the Winnie
the Pooh stuff.

A 38-year-old kid.

I didn't just say how
old she was, did I?

I didn't want her to kill me.

She's always coming up
with good reasons to kill me.

You better bowl better.

Tremendous, complete,
professional bowler.

Six-foot-two-inch, 180-pound,
Walter Ray Williams.

That ought to be a title.

Six World Horseshoe titles.

So far, I've done very well over
my career, and I have no complaints.

Fortunately, the new PBA's
got some good money behind it.

I think that allows for a lot better
marketing, promotions and stuff.

I just hope I can
benefit from it.

The one dream that I always had was
just to make a TV show with my dad.

And we've never done that.

We've never made one TV show
in, like, 25 years as a PBA member.

We never made a
TV show together.

It's never gonna change.

Dick Webber's always gonna be more
famous than Pete Webber, because, I mean,

Dick Webber made professional
bowling what it is today.

And anybody that says different,
I'll argue with them about that.

It's good to see you.

Yes, it's nice to
see you again, too.

It's a little portrait that the
fourth one we had to do.

Yeah.

When the kids get divorced
or change spouses or

add kids, they gotta take
another picture for me.

You'll see so much shit in
this house, you won't believe it.

There's any room

This is what I grew up with.

The smallest tournament to the biggest
tournament always was just as much fun.

That's when bowling was bowling.

Dick Webber.

They call him the cracker, the
splinter, the thin man from St. Louis.

Dick Webber, an All-American
on any man's bowling team.

I think it was hard at first for Pete to be
my son, but his drive is to beat my career.

Much different than I am in style,
much different than me in attitude,

even though we
both have tempers.

His antics on the lanes are a
little bit more wild than mine were.

They expected me to be just like
Dad, and I had a rude awakening for him.

I wasn't like Dick Webber.

He was the most
lovable kid that I had.

He was so outgoing,
and he wasn't mean.

He just wanted to be
doing something all the time.

Well, I think my
record speaks for itself.

Throughout my career, I've been
known to raise a little hell, yeah.

Later part of the 80s, early
part of the 90s, I don't think

the guys respected me because
I was the rebel of the tour.

According to PBA officials, Pete Webber
is appealing a six-month suspension from

professional bowling for conduct
unbecoming a professional, a violation of

PBA rules that he
allegedly committed while

on probation for
previous rules violations.

Drank so much, just slur everything, not
be able to walk, passed out on the floors.

You know, you get into a
little trouble with Uncle Sam,

and you know, you have
warrants out for your arrest.

He's not as nice as his father.

He doesn't have the
composure his father has.

He'll never make it.

And I was like, well, I got people
right here because I am making it.

He gave me a lot of
headaches, but all my kids did.

And their boys, you know, with
the exception of the daughter.

She had a few problems, too.

You know, so it's
cool to be home and be

responsible instead of
just drinking my life away.

winningest bowlers on the PBA history.

He's won 20 tournaments and

puts the fire in me.

I always bowl better
when I'm broke.

You ought to be a hell

This was just our
first all-American team.

This one here is my first title.

The Brunswick World Open.

That was in 1978.

This one here.

The cup that's all beat
up from so many moves.

That was the
Tournament of Champions.

1980.

So at 22, Mr. Cool wins it.

Dwayne Webb is the winner of the
Firestone Tournament of Champions.

Dwayne won 30 grand today.

Zena's the one girlfriend
that'll never leave me.

My last wife told me,
she said, I hate bowlers.

I hate everything about them.

I never liked bowlers.

I'm like, great.

So why'd you marry me?

And I got a ladies program.

And I'm looking through it.

I'm looking for my next wife.

And I saw this one
lady, Travis McNeese.

And I said, that's her.

I'm gonna meet
her and marry her.

I met her two months later.

Married her a year later.

And we were
married for five years.

But I made some mistakes
that were unforgivable.

So we didn't quite make
it through our relationship.

But most everything
were my mistakes.

Back in the early 80's
I did a lot of partying.

I started getting into karaoke.

I was the entertainment in the lounge
just about every night of the week.

Money at this point didn't
really mean anything to me.

Money's never really
meant anything to me.

I used to love throwing parties
and having people come over.

I still do that.

If I've got a little extra money,
anyone who wants it, they can have it.

I don't care.

That was probably
my biggest downfall.

I wasn't cheap.

And it didn't bother me
to pay for everything.

I didn't handle it very well financially
because I enjoyed gambling.

So I had to go bankrupt
for a second time.

I've been bowling all these
regionals and I've won a few.

You know, almost to
where I feel like a star again.

It's my best way to make
a living and get ahead.

It's got to work out.

It's one of my last chances.

Linda's job's a lot
tougher than mine is.

The boys are a great thing,
but they're a lot of work.

And she has...

she gets them 24-7.

long as I can balance that out

with my family and not feel like
I'm taken away from my boys.

six hours tops.

Depends if we

But other than that, if I let Tracy
drive, we'll make it about four and a half.

Any time you walk MacRalta Ray off
a TV show or beat him on a TV show,

it's extra special.

It's got a little
more meaning to it.

In 97, when it was
our very last telecast, of

course, he was the number
one player in the world.

And it seems like once we get on TV,
he's a solid nine or throw a stupid shot

right in the key situation
of the match to give him the

opportunity to get up and
throw strikes to lock me out.

So yeah, there's some
things I'd like to do next

year and a couple of them
are beat Walter Ray on TV.

We're going to have an opportunity to get
together with the players and spend some

time and talk to them about the
realities of the season, what we expect.

And of course, the opening players meeting
is always an interesting experience.

It's always something the
players, I think, look forward to.

I know it's something
I look forward to.

Steve Miller is trying
to get the players to

support what the PBA
office is trying to do.

And I think in some
cases he probably did that.

In other cases, he might have
alienated some of the players.

I don't know.

You'd have to
ask all the players.

As far as Steve Miller goes, I
wouldn't want anybody else in

the office running our show
the way he knows how to do it.

They're the guys with the money and
they're strong-egoed and strong-willed.

They're not going
to listen to anyone.

They're going
to do it their way.

Right or wrong, it's their show.

I'm going to keep him and remember
all the things I got screwed out of before.

There's a bunch of
seats up here in the front.

So we should try to get
together and start this.

We said 6 o'clock
and we should start.

We're already a
few minutes late.

We're going to talk
about the finances.

It seems to me that
there might be a concern

that those rich guys are
making money off of me.

I'm going to show you
where we are financially.

Operating costs
almost $19 million.

Why does it cost $19 million?

There's all kinds
of shit you pay for.

If you have a frigging
business, when you open

it up, you turn the
goddamn lights on, it costs.

Traveling costs.

My fucking salary costs.

I'd like you to try to
add some of this shit up.

Because you may find, I may be wrong about
this, but you may find we're spending more

than we're making, which
means a loss of revenue.

And we need to begin to
recognize that our value is

limited unless we do
things to push our value up.

The average number of viewing households
in America this last year, the PBA was

ahead of the National
Hockey League, ahead of the

LPGA, ahead of the X Games,
and ahead of MLS Soccer.

Now, a dose of reality for a commercial
of 30 seconds, we get about $4,000.

Our ratings are better
than these people.

Do you know what the National
Hockey League gets for a 30 second spot?

$15,000 minimum.

Why?

Because they have value.

Why?

Is it real value?

Saved value.

Bowling, our sport, has
had no unified message.

What is the message in bowling?

Have fun?

Have a beer?

What was the
message for bowling?

How do you talk to consumers?

You have to have a coordinated,
well-placed, understood message.

And two of our messages
this year are going to be only

one can win and the March
to the World Championship.

Why?

Because we need to build
equity in the World Championship.

I want you to go to a motel and check in
or a hotel and check in and when they say

what do you do for a
living, I want you to tell them.

As opposed to some people who I've
checked in behind who didn't tell them.

Because you don't feel
good about yourselves.

I want you to feel
good about yourself.

I may tell you a bunch
of shit you don't want

to hear, but I'm not
going to lie to you.

And don't think for a second I don't care
about this because I care a great deal.

But I want you to
care just as much.

And if you don't like
being If you're cold, if

you don't like it, don't
bowl, then I'm sorry.

That's not fair.

I have the right to play.

You don't have a
right to do anything.

You are being given a
privilege because of your skills.

Let me just close
with one last comment.

Together, we got a chance.

Separately, we have no
fucking chance whatsoever.

So either we're in this
together, or you can kiss my ass.

The first of 20
telecasts here on ESPN.

We start to march to
the World Championship.

It's a tough road
for these bowlers.

The 130-man field bowls nine
games and then gets cut to 64.

Then we bowl a second
qualifying round for a place

in the 32-man single
elimination match play bracket.

Win four matches, and you're
bowling on TV for the big bucks.

Not an easy road for
these bowlers at all.

You know, if you miss
the top 64, you don't

get paid for the week,
you don't get a check.

And by the time you add up all your
expenses, you're about $1,200 in the hole.

We only have a limited number
of opportunities to make this right.

You know, we have 20 shows.

We don't want you
to be play actors.

We don't want you to do something that
you're uncomfortable with, but we want you

to do whatever it is
you are comfortable with.

You need to be yourself, and you need to
be as much of yourself as you possibly can.

The reality is this is a great opportunity
for you as individuals, for us as a sport,

and certainly for our
league, for the PVA.

watching it, I don't get a
flavor for how the TV went.

I think about a bunch of things,
but mostly scoring, pace, and energy,

and what I would be
thinking as a consumer.

If I was watching this,
what would I be thinking?

Would this be interesting?

Would it be meaningful?

Those are important issues.

One of the first things I
started with was introductions.

You know, they had never successfully
done that in the past, and I thought,

if you want it to be big, you
want to get on the air with a bang.

With lighting and, in some cases,
smoke, we're making it feel big.

The guys are high-fiving.

Fans are out there.

Everybody's pumped up.

I'm a little surprised at how
well Deontremont's doing.

He's performing flawlessly.

And I think that's where a lot of
guys my age feel a little resentful.

They don't have any commitment
to the way that they treat us.

You know, some things they do are good and
some things they do, they've got to learn.

They admit they're going to
make mistakes, but it'll get better.

They're smart people
and they know what to do.

So the schedule, we need to
talk about it in a real viable way.

And the preparation level for the World
Championship, in terms of going in and

sending Andrew in and trying to get
sponsorships, going in and trying to sell

tickets, going in and
trying to get things done.

Why didn't we do
that for every event?

You know how we're handling
the World Championship right now?

You know, we've got people going
into the city, we've got things going on.

We're doing a good job.

Would I say we're
doing a great job?

No, I wouldn't.

Because nobody knows
this fucking thing exists.

But I will tell you one
thing that this does

not take into consideration
to a great extent.

And that is, what does
the audience want?

Because frankly, I don't give
a shit what the players want.

And secondly, what
do the sponsors want?

And the two things that drive our
business are the audience and sponsors,

not the players.

The players will figure it out.

In my own personal interactions with Steve
Miller, it's been unfortunately that we've

had more heads butting than we've
had, you know, good handshakes.

Some of the fans that
make the most noise are

the ones that they
seem to be trying to...

appease, you know, that they're trying to
go after the 18 to 35-year-old males who

tend to be a lot more, I don't
know, aggressive or whatever.

And they tend to like the players who are,
you know, more brash like a Pete Webber.

I think those guys
are exciting to watch.

But, you know, I also like to
see good performances too.

So I think there's definitely a
place for somebody like myself.

Well, I mean, you know, being a marketer
of a product, we're supportive any time a

trademark is treated
in a respectful manner.

Although that was a comedy and the
whole overtone of that movie was a comedy.

Even from that movie, even back then,
it was a natural fit, we believe, so...

We were contacted by representatives
of the PBA, oh, about 10 months ago.

To talk to us about an opportunity
about sponsoring the sport.

Basically anyone who has stinky feet
or suffers from foot odor and wetness.

Mothers, you have
fathers, you have kids.

And I think if you look at your average
bowling center on any given day,

you're going to see it filled with
people that make up that demographic.

To us, it's a
perfect, perfect fit.

We feel like we had a
very strong team this year.

And quite frankly, we wanted a team that
would get exposure on the show on Sundays.

We feel like we've definitely
achieved that goal with Walter Ray.

Last year I had an
outstanding year.

And this year's been
a little slower for me.

I feel like I'm
throwing the ball good.

But score-wise hasn't
been as good as last year.

Ah, shit.

I firmly believe your home
life, I mean, if you have a

family, a wife, that
relationship's got to be strong.

I mean, I've seen them bust up.

I've seen some succeed.

There's not many married couples that
spend as much time together as we do,

so the only time alone
apart that we have

from each other is when
he's actually bowling.

If we're spending as much time together
as we do, we get along pretty well.

Come on, he's gonna strike.

95 would have been the one year that
I really would have considered quitting.

I mean, I'd bowled
so bad that whole year.

And my personal
life wasn't in order.

He'd come home with
his tail between his legs.

He says, what do I got to do?

I think I want to go back
to college and learn a trade.

He goes, what do you think?

I said, I think you need to
pull your head out of your ass

and get out there and throw
the ball like you know how.

She convinced me not to
quit yet, to try out another year.

First tournament of the year,
I go out and make the show.

So I was like, alright,
this is a little better.

Tracy totally
understands bowling.

She knows what it's
like to be on the road.

She did it herself
for a little while.

So she knows what it's
like to be on the road and

have to bowl and find a
hotel and do everything.

She knows that her time out here
with me is basically to keep me going.

I mean, to make sure
my clothes are ready.

I mean, not to make her sound like a
slave, but she helps drive and she takes

care of all the hotel
reservations and things like that.

So, I mean, basically to me,
my job is to bowl and bowl only.

Just throw the ball.

And then when we get home,
I try and make things up to

her when we get home,
but it doesn't really work out.

It doesn't work
out all that much.

I feel like in the past I've sacrificed the
one thing that was most important to me.

And that's the family life.

The divorce rate
is huge on tour.

Because of the ups and downs are so tough,
emotionally, we go through hell out here.

There have been a number of
families that will buy a motorhome.

These guys will do that just so they
can have some type of a home life.

We've got a fairly
good-sized refrigerator.

It's got some food in it.

Not lots, but it's got some.

The one sink over here, main
sink, and over here is another toilet.

Or actually, the toilet with
another sink over here.

My wife is generous
to let me have this one.

Did you want something, honey?

Yeah, I've been
making one all over.

I guess PDW likes the
peanut butter jelly, which I

actually like also, but I
prefer the meat sandwiches.

I'd like to think that
bowling is entertaining.

And I think part of that goes to, you
know, people who are running the PVA.

From my perspective,
you know what?

We are what we are.

There has to be, at some
point, an ultimate decision maker.

And I believe in that.

I believe that you have to have
some place where the buck stops.

Have an individual or a
group of individuals that

have a vision for what you
want to be moving forward.

See what is and
ask what could be.

I don't think my bull in
the china shop personality

and mentality would have
been good for the PGA.

But I think I'm
reasonably good for this.

In five years, I don't
think they'll need me.

You know, maybe three
years they won't need me.

Maybe they won't
even need me next year.

But they certainly needed
me to start the thing off.

Or a person like me.

I think there are nothing but great
people, not great environments.

I think there's nothing but
great people, not great jobs.

I think there's nothing but great
people that overcome enormous odds.

I just think it's the
way it is and I think that

there's, I think the
human spirit is boundless.

So if Pete wouldn't have come
along, somebody else would have.

But the reality is he did.

And how fucking good is that?

PDW is a champion again.

And for the first time in his great career
has defended a PBA tour championship.

They had some management

They're looking for my karaoke
business, which was real big.

And I haven't done it for
a couple of years, but they

remember when I did do it out
here, it was such a great time.

And people ask
for it all the time.

I'm broke, and I have no
family, and I have no life.

And I need every piece
of that to make me happy.

I've been on the
road too many years.

about, you know, how things are

year I was able to do a
pretty good job with that.

I think it's exciting
because for the first time

I've actually thought maybe
my kids could be bowlers.

Because there might be
a PBA around and they

might actually be able
to make a living doing it.

What makes it difficult in bowling is
that we literally know that this change is

going to create a crack that
some people are going to fall into.

It's part of the way the world
works, and it's one of the sad things,

but one of the great things is
to be able to hold on to what

you had, look at it as a
celebration, as opposed to a funeral.

I made a decision to basically
give my entire life to bowling.

And now I'm, you know, now
kind of paying the penalty for it.

You know, the little
places are gone.

And I think that that's just because
of the way, that's just society.

When you walk into the bowling center
and the person working the desk goes,

hey, Wayne, what's going on?

That's what it's all about,
is people knowing everyone.

They were all mom
and pop centers.

If I could ever get into a bowling
center that had that type of feeling again,

that would be the
greatest thing in the world.

I defy anybody in this
room to tell me, even for a

moment, that we haven't
made monumental progress.

And I'll tell you, I'm the most optimistic
guy in the world, and it's gone beyond

where I thought it was
going to be this quickly.

But this is the
Hundred Year War.

This is not an overnight deal.

This thing was fucked up.
