- [Brian] I know your parents

- [Jason] Absolutely.

- [Brian] But do you
think they ever actually

think about you having sex with a guy?

- [Jason] Did you ever visualize
your parents having sex?

- [Brian] No, they were my parents.

- [Jason] Exactly, and you were their kid.

And parents and kids don't
think about each other

having sex, gay or straight.

- [Brian] Unless they're members

of one of those renegade
Mormon sects (laughs).

- [Jason] Or Woody Allen (laughs).

(light guitar music)

- So how was the flight?

- It was fine, right on time.

- Except suddenly,
they're not just charging

for checked bags.

They're charging for carry-ons, too.

- [Brian] I know.

- Apparently, it's in
the fine print online

but we didn't notice that.

We just saw it was a good fare.

- Yeah, or so we thought.

- Anything for a buck, right?

(Frannie laughs)

Something like that
shouldn't be in fine print.

It should be red and flashing.
(Carl laughs)

- That's what Carl said
to the woman at the gate.

- I'll bet.

- Only not quite as nicely.

- Well, they need to know how outraged

their customers are,

so that they can pass it
on to their superiors.

- Or report you to Homeland Security.

- Are you sure we're not
gonna be too much trouble?

- Some things never change.

- No problem at all.

- We can still go to a hotel.

- No, after all the money
you just spent on a flight.

- (laughs) I'm serious.

- So am I.

Jason always wanted you to stay with us.

- But it was always, "This
way you'll have your privacy

"and we'll have ours."

- I know.

- We both did.

- I just don't understand
why they always insist

on staying in a hotel.

I mean it's not like we're offering them

a pullout sofa in the living room.

It's an honest-to-God
guestroom with its own bath.

- [Brian] I know.

Well, like they said,

maybe they just want their privacy.

- I guess.

- Or maybe they're afraid we
have really loud sex (laughs).

Or maybe they do (laughs).

- You're talking about my parents.

- All I'm saying is you can't
take it personally, baby.

(mouths smooching)

- I know, I just wish they'd stay with us.

- And this time we are.

- Good.

(Carl laughs)

- Is David here?

- No, we're gonna meet him at his place

for drinks before dinner.

- Oh, that sounds so nice.

Oh, look at you.

- Look at you.

- I am, she looks older.

They both do.

- So, how's the new business?

- Oh, well, it's coming along slowly,

but, you know, it's a process.

- I remember when Jason
opened his own agency.

That was before you met him.

Part of him was terrified.

Yeah, suddenly not having
someone else write his paycheck.

- I know the feeling.

- I could never have done it.

But it all worked out for Jason,

and it will for you too.

Just hang in there.

- That's the plan (laughs).

- Good for you.

- And if you need a little help.

No no, we helped Jason
out in the beginning.

We can help you too.

- Let's get those bags
into your room, okay?

Come on.

(both laughing)

- I think I like being a matchmaker.

- You know, whenever we get
together with your parents,

your mother and Frannie,

they spend the entire evening

patting themselves on the back.

- Not the entire evening (laughs).

It's just that we both
are so happy for you,

as are Carl and your father.

- And as are we.

- Thank you.

- You're very welcome.

Oh, and before I forget.

Your family made us promise to remind you

that they want you both for Thanksgiving.

Mom has made that abundantly clear.

- And we have a vested interest.

- Yes, because if you're
going, we get invited.

(Carl laughs)

- Oh.

- Wait, they made your invite conditional?

- Talk about pressure (laughs).

- So?

- Well it's kind of in Brian's court.

- Oh, you know, Jason and
I always spent Thanksgiving

with my sister and her family.

- I know.

- And since he died,

I've continued the tradition,

right down to making
the blueberry peach pie

he always made.

- And sometimes it's important
to create new traditions.

- Good point.

- I know, I know, but Rob's gonna be there

and Karen's gonna be home from Cornell,

and I don't wanna disappoint them.

- Well, like I said, we can
always visit your sister

and brother-in-law and
their kids over Christmas.

- Or we can visit your
family over Christmas, too.

Hey why don't we head over
to the restaurant, huh?

- It's not that I want
him to forget Jason.

But did you notice how many times

he referenced him tonight?

I mean, here, at David's,

at the restaurant.

- Well, it's probably
because we're visiting.

Jason is the link between us.

- I know, but even so--

- Plus he probably feels a little awkward,

being with his new
boyfriend in front of us.

- Why? We're the ones who
fixed him up with David.

- I know but still, we're Jason's parents.

You all knew Jason as an adult,

so we thought,

we thought it was important
to share some stories,

you know, some memories of
when he was a little boy,

when he was our little boy, our son.

It was only natural, you know,

that Jason became a literary agent,

because since the time he could talk,

he was obsessed with words.

There was one time,

he was barely three years old.

And we went to the local
Chinese restaurant.

And we were in a booth.

Frannie and Jason were sitting on a bench,

and me opposite them.

And Frannie and I were
discussing what to order.

And Jason kept trying, unsuccessfully,

to get our attention.

And finally he just got up on the bench

and he pointed to this sign
that was in the distance.

And he just yelled, he went,

"Daddy, Daddy, me know

"how to spell door, E-X-I-T."
(attendees laughing)

Yeah, we never let him forget that story.

(attendees laughing)

No, he was our little boy.

Our only.

- It was never our plan

to have only one child,

but that's the way it worked out.

And we made peace with it.

But when your seven-year-old asks you,

"Why don't I have a brother or a sister

"like all my other friends,"

well, that's a whole other thing.

And so after I rambled on and on

about God's will
(attendees laughing)

and God's plan,

he just looked at me
with this quizzical look

and he said, "Oh, I thought it was because

"I was perfect."

(attendees laughing)

And he was.

(Both crying)

And then there's the apartment.

He hasn't changed a thing.

Not a photo, not the towels.

He probably didn't even change the sheets.

- Well, people let go at their own pace.

- I know, but--

- Stop worrying.

- It's what I do.

(Carl laughs)

I can't worry about Jason anymore,

so I have to have someone to worry about.

- Here, come to bed.

- Oh, you silvery-tongued orator.

(both laughing)

Oh.
- I like that.

- Yeah.
- Yes (laughs).

- Oh, this is nice.

- Comfy?

- Why have we never stayed here before?

- Because we were fools.

- Oh, yeah.

- [Jason] Why didn't you
let David spend the night?

- I don't know.

It's weird with your parents being here.

- They introduced you.

- Yeah, well, that's different

than actually seeing us in our...

You know what?

It's better this way, easier on everyone.

- You had issues dealing
with your own parents.

Now you have issues dealing with mine?

- I was just trying to be
considerate of their feelings.

I'd think you'd appreciate that.

(soft guitar music)
