to explain it, nothing,

it was just
very, very scary.

She said, you know, when I
die, I'm gonna haunt you.

Narrator: When family
members pass away

and return to haunt
the living.

That's the first time I had
ever seen anything,

and it is terrifying,
I'm sorry.

I buried this for
nearly 30 years.

Narrator: Be prepared
to be afraid.

♪

(typing)

Paranormal Survivor two,
story number 17 take one.

♪

Narrator: Anita Spero
and her family moved

into their new house
in Oswego 2006.

Immediately her daughter
began making new friends.

When we moved in there my
daughter started talking about a

little boy named Billy,
and then my daughter

was telling me one day,
"I'm talking to Billy,

and he wants to know where
his mom and dad are

and he keeps pointing at the
house across the street."

Narrator: At first Anita
thought nothing

of her daughter's
encounter.

Oh thank you.

So this little boy in
the neighbourhood.

So with time I got to
know my neighbours

and she told me this
story about Billy.

!Billy was a little boy, actually
his parents lived across

the street from us, and
Billy, all the kids

in the area for years
would catch

the bus outside our house,
even way back when.

And he was hit
by the bus.

Something to do with his grandma
I don't know the entire story.

Anita: I said, "Do you
have a picture of him?"

♪

And then when my daughter came
home, shoe pointed to it,

and said, "mom,
that's Billy."

Oh yeah, he's always crossing
that street to school,

he's always
out there.

♪

I don't understand,
how can this be?

Narrator: If Anita had
trouble believing it,

her doubts would
not last long.

♪

And I started seeing
Billy looking in our window.

(creaking)

I've seen little glimpses of
him, and it's quite scary.

♪

(creaking)

I mean I wouldn't want to
be, and this gets scary,

I wouldn't want to be
alone in a small room

with him or
in a closet.

♪

♪

Narrator: The nighbours
also reported

seeing Billy around
Anita's home.

We've had a couple people
come in and say straight out,

"I just saw a little boy run
into your basement."

(clap of thunder)

!Narrator: Strange things started
to happen inside Anita's house.

♪

When we come in, um, the
cabinets in the kitchen,

and we have kind of
a big kitchen,

a lot of cabinets,
they're all open.

♪

And then by the time you sit
down to take your shoes off

and go, "what's
going on?"

You turn around and
they're shut, all of 'em,

and you don't hear 'em,
that's the crazy part,

you don't
hear 'em.

Things were just getting
weird in our house.

Narrator: Anita assumed
the ghost of Billy

was behind the events
in the kitchen.

♪

But she
was wrong.

♪

Every time I would fall asleep
in my bed I thought

I was waking up to some
weird nightmares,

like the house
is on fire.

(screaming)

But, um, it felt like I was
being shaken awake,

like shaken
awake.

(screaming)

I felt like I was having
the life choked out

of me at that
point.

(screaming)

And I'd sit up and there's
nothing there,

and I thought I must be dreaming
this, and this was happening

for quite a
few weeks.

Narrator: Anita endured the
terrifying night attacks

for over two months until she
got some unexpected news.

(phone ringing)

Hello.

I was sleeping and my husband
woke me up and said,

"so and so's on the phone and,
uh, your mom died."

And I'm like "oh my God,"
even though we hadn't talked

in 8 years, you know it's
still kinda shocking.

(crying)

And I said, "well okay,
how did she die?"

♪

And I said, "was it
from the cigarette?"

And the person actually told me,
"no, it was just a house fire."

♪

My mom was a drug addict
and I knew she fell asleep

with a cigarette, and
I said, "okay,

well when's the funeral
and everything?"

And the person said, "well
it was 9 weeks ago."

And I was like, "okay, so
you're just calling me now?"

Thank you,
okay, oh God.

Narrator: Anita's
relationship

with her mother had
not been easy.

She wasn't a real nice
person at least to me,

I don't know how she was with
other people, but not to me.

We had a bad falling out the
last time I talked to her

and she said, "you know, when
I die I'm gonna haunt you."

And she told me that, "I'm
gonna be around you."

Narrator: To her horror,
Anita realized

that the nighttime terrors she
was suffering had begun

at exactly the same
time her mother died.

!Anita: So I tried to sleep in my
room for a little while longer,

but I just, I couldn't
do it anymore,

and she's a very frightening
person, um, very frightening.

♪

I thought she was
gonna kill me.

♪

A spirits personality does
not improve with death,

and if you were an
evil person in life,

you got joy out of
victimizing people,

you're going to try to do
the same thing after death

and it brings some sort of sick
perverse satisfaction

to that spirit.

♪

Narrator: But Anita would
soon find it would take

a lot more than moving
to sleep on the couch

to escape her
mothers' wrath.

♪

(sigh)

The other day I was
putting my makeup on

and, um, the lights
flicker on and off.

(flickering)

You can see
the shadow

of something underneath our
door just standing there.

(flickering)

It feels like someone's
standing outside

the bathroom door
holding the door shut,

and that time I
did hear her,

and I mean she cackles like a
witch, it's not like a human,

and I don't know if they do that
purposely, but it's very scary.

(cackling)

(stove igniting)

Narrator: The personal attacks
became even more dangerous.

(stove igniting)

Somebody was turning on the
stove random times of the day.

(coughing)

So you'd hear the tick, tick,
tick, and it would be on,

and just either gas, you
could smell the gas.

I think my worst
fear is that

she's gonna set the
house on fire.

My worst fear.

(coughing)

(fire crackling)

(fire alarm beeping)

♪

♪

(flickering)

Narrator: Anita Spero had
been tormented by the spirit

of her estranged mother, but
in a shocking escalation,

the mother had started to
threaten Anita's life.

(fire alarm beeping)

The fires are random, and
it's not like in a fireplace,

it will be the rug, the rug,
it will be on fire,

there'll be a
flame there.

Where it comes from,
I don't, I mean,

that's scary, because why is it
there, how does it get there?

None of us, there's no ignition
source on my carpeting,

and it's very
scary.

(fire alarm beeping)

I know it's my
mom doing it.

My grandma told me that
she used to start fires

when she was younger,
you know, nothing major,

but it's still being
a fire bug,

and I think it's always
stuck with her.

(fire alarm beeping)

Her goal would be to
do something to me

that is fire related because
that's how she died.

She has a thing
with fire.

(fire alarm beeping)

Well, I was getting tired of
it, I couldn't do it anymore,

I couldn't take it, I
didn't know what to do.

♪

Sorry.

♪

Narrator: Anita decided
to call in the help

!of paranormal investigator Dale
Kaczmarek and his team.

♪

When I first met Anita, she
was not in the very best

of emotional states, she
was very distraught,

and she probably thought she
was going crazy for a bit.

And that kind of really
drained upon her senses,

so when she contacted me
she wanted some peace.

♪

This was by far one of the most
interesting and unique cases

that we ever had a
chance to investigate.

♪

We were doing an
EVP session upstairs

in Anita's master
bedroom,

the EVP central Electronic
Voice Phenomenon.

We were all sitting around the
bed, we had asked a question,

"did you die in
a fire?"

(moaning)

♪

And a few seconds later,
everybody in the room heard,

what was best described as
a female cry or moan,

it sounded like ahh,
ahh, sorta like that,

it was very, very audible,
it was picked up

on all the digital recorders and
all the cameras in the room.

♪

The follow up question
said, "Is that you?"

And then another response of
that same cry, much lower,

was then heard
as well.

It was my mom, I mean it
could be no other voice.

(crying)

I mean so strong like she
was still alive,

like it was very shocking,
very unnerving,

and really scary,
it was like

the answer I was waiting for,
but now that I have the answer,

now I'm really scared,
really scared.

♪

Narrator: Hoping to
gather evidence of

the spirits true intentions,
!Dale asked Anita to act as bait.

Dale: During some of the EVP
!sessions we actually used Anita

as a trigger object; a trigger
object is something

that we use to illicit
a ghost response.

Why are you
here?

♪

What do you want?

Leave me alone.

We put her in the room on the
bed and we were recording

to see if something
was interacting

with her while
she was upstairs.

(screaming)

♪

♪

!Narrator: Anita Spero had called
in paranormal investigators

to help her get rid of her
mothers' evil spirit.

We put her in the room to see
if something was interacting

with her while
she was upstairs.

And in fact we do have several
segments and clips

where she actually heard
sounds in the room,

of footsteps, noises and bumps
right outside the door,

and we were all
downstairs at

that time monitoring so
there was nobody around.

(screaming)

Shocked.

Validated, but really shocked,
and if it's true that we're,

in life, we're the
same way in death,

you know, I'm in
real trouble.

There was another camera
that was set up in one

of the children's' rooms, this
camera was in the room,

by itself, the door was
closed, nobody was

in the room
at the time.

Now, it's very common that
sometimes cameras on tripods

can come loose, and cameras
might dip down a little bit

when they come
loose.

♪

But then the camera
corrected itself back up,

it went against gravity,
which to me

is something a camera
does not do, so something

was actually manipulating
the camera in that room.

♪

One of the most interesting
things, however,

happened when we
were all downstairs.

♪

(footsteps running)

Suddenly we heard
the sound

of several people running
down the hallway.

(footsteps running)

and it was very
definite footsteps,

patter of feet running
from the direction

of the bathroom over our
head and disappeared.

(cackling)

The different pyro kinetic
activity that was seen with this

by Anita and others in her
home, I would put my best

and most likely, it was Anita's
mom that probably is creating

that activity rather
than a poltergeist

because of the way
Anita's mom died.

♪

We always try to give the client
some advice, or recommendations

of how they can, you know,
alleviate the situation,

one is to be very assertive
about yourself and say that this

is my home, you don't belong
here, and to simply get out.

♪

Another thing I told her to
do was to, you know,

you have to take over your
room, you have to sleep there

no matter what
happens there,

and not let anything drive
you out of your bedroom.

Right now we're kind
of still working

at me taking my control
back of my room,

going up there and sleeping,
and not being afraid,

I haven't quite gotten there
but I'm working on it.

I mean he's very intelligent
about this stuff,

I think any advice he gives
me, you know, is worth,

you know, paying attention
to, it's just getting

the courage right now
because she is scary.

♪

(cackling)

And she did try it for a few
nights and then she said

she couldn't take it, she
went back downstairs.

I thought cleansing, spirit
walking, having priests over,

anybody to come bless
the house, saging,

I've thought of all that,
the problem is sometimes

it doesn't make it go away,
it makes it worse.

It's the fear because I am very
afraid of her so I don't know

what to do, I really don't
know what I wanna do.

!Narrator: Petrified of provoking
!her mother's spirit any further,

Anita has not attempted
to cleanse her house.

Anita continues
to live in fear

of what her mother
might do to this day.

Narrator: Not all
family phantoms

are psychotic ghosts
intent on causing harm

to their living
offspring.

Sometimes the spirit of
dead relatives might

just not be ready to let go
and move on to the afterlife

but that can bring
it's own problems.

Lynn's Lake House story
number 27 take 1.

♪

(projector ticking)

!Lynn: The lake house has been in
our family since about 1916.

It belonged to my
two godmothers,

aunt Helen and
aunt Sada.

The lake house is in La
Salle, Michigan on Lake Eerie.

If you walk it it's like going
back to the turn of the century.

♪

Everything is exactly
the same.

There's been a few
updates in the kitchen

but other than that
including the furniture,

the things that are in
the medicine cabinets,

the things that are in the
cabinets, the silverware,

the dishes, everything is from
back then, from the 1920's.

So when you
go there--

--When, I mean, people are
in awe when they walk in.

♪

Aunt Helen was very stringent,
she didn't like children.

Growing up like my sister
and I were not aloud

to go into the living room,
anywhere into the cottage.

We were only allowed to
go into the kitchen.

She was just--

--Kinda very stern.

I think she didn't like
kids, Aunt Helen,

because she
didn't have any

and I think when you
don't have children

you just don't have much
tolerance for them.

Aunt Helen passed away, I
think I was 17 at the time

and even at 17 I'd never
been in the house.

(waves splashing)

When they passed away they
!left it to my mother and father.

♪

When we first started going
into the lake house,

it's a funny feeling, I don't
know how to explain it.

♪

It's a real heavy,
odd feeling.

You can just like
feel things around you.

And its just a creepy feeling
that you know as soon

!as you walk in, it's almost like
you're not wanted there.

It's almost like, "Go
away, leave us alone."

Narrator: Despite her
reservations,

Lynn tried to enjoy life
in the lake house.

♪

Lynn: I spent the night, now
this was in the early 80's

at the lake house.

The yellow room has got
a door next to the bed

that goes up
into the attic

and there's no windows
in the attic.

♪

(door knob turning fast)

The entire night it started and
the door was just shaking

and then it would get
harder and harder.

(door creaking)

♪

♪

Narrator: Lynn Bringman
had strange feelings

!about the old lake house she had
inherited from her Aunt Helen.

This was the first time
she had stayed over night.

Lynn: The entire night the
door was just shaking.

I mean I'm not kidding
you, I was terrified!

All night long it would
get loud then go--

(stammering).

Softer. I would think, "Oh it
stopped, okay it stopped."

And then it would
start again.

(door knob rattling)

(door creaking)

I was like a little kid
hiding under the blankets

and that's exactly
what I was doing.

♪
I was up all night with this big
light on and my head covered.

♪

Oh it was
horrible.

That's the first time that
there was solid proof

that something was
not quite right.

♪

I didn't sleep there
again for 30 years.

♪

(waves crashing)

Narrator: Lynn didn't stay
away completely.

She often returned for day
visits with the family.

Ready or not
here I come!

Lynn: My nephews were small
and I was playing upstairs,

this was soon after that,
umm hide and seek upstairs.

♪

My mom was downstairs and she
was saying, "Come on Lynn,

come on down here, we
want to go for dinner."

And I said, "As soon as I find
the boys, I will be down."

Everyone was downstairs and
my aunt was looking for us

and then she heard a voice
uhh, call out to her.

Ghost: Lynn.

Lynn: So I'm in the blue
room looking for them

and I heard my name
called like in a whisper

but loud enough
for me to hear.

It was like,
"Lynn, Lynn."

So I thought it was
my oldest nephew Brad

calling me to
let me know.

I thought, oh he heard
my mom and he's trying

to speed it up so
I find him.

♪

So I walked
into the room.

Ghost: Lynn, Lynn.

And it was that heavy
horrible feeling again.

♪

You can
feel it. You can feel that feeling of
just get the hell outta here.

And I was actually frozen, I
was so afraid, I was terrified.

(stammers)

Even thinking that my
nephews were in that room,

I backed out
and ran.

I ran, I ran down
the steps.

I was terrified.

I mean, taking
a couple steps

at a time thinking I'm
leaving my nephews up there.

(quick footsteps)

Come to find out as soon
as I got down there,

nobody was up there with
me I was by myself.

She found us down there
and so nobody was upstairs.

My nephews were hiding
behind a door downstairs.

♪

That was my Aunt
Helen's room.

There was no
question in my mind.

I mean, I knew it was
Aunt Helen and Aunt Sada.

And I was the only, even though
I was 25, 26 years old,

I knew I was still
young enough

that they did not
want me there.

♪

Narrator: Now grown up, it
was Lynn's nephews turn

to experience first hand the
weird activity in the house.

It wasn't till later when I had
my first experience I was like,

"Okay, maybe it's just
not crazy Aunt Lynn

telling ghost stories or
my mom telling stories.

I mean, it's,
you know,

there's some credibility
to these claims."

♪

The first experience I had
was roughly ten years ago.

I can remember like it was
yesterday, I'll never forget it.

(fan clanking)

I was in the twin bedroom
and I was asleep

and all of sudden the
fan next to me came on.

(fan clanking)

It just came on in the
middle of the night

and it's broken so it started
clanking, and it woke me up.

I was like,
"Oh my god."

At first it shocks you cause
it's so loud but then I looked

to see it's the
type of fan,

it's old so it's not
just a push button.

So, I investigated, I tried to
figure out if it's something

I could've done or if there
was a plausible explanation.

It's a matter of
deduction like,

so could I have accidentally
turned it on?

No, I would have to reach around
the opposite side of the fan.

Could it have come on by
itself, is it a short?

Well, no it's never
come on before.

♪

I even talked to some
people about it

to make sure I wasn't just crazy
or, you know, making up stuff.

Nobody else could figure
out anything else.

We couldn't accidentally get the
fan to turn on by hitting it.

The next day we tried
anything, I mean, shaking it.

Nothing could get
it to turn on.

This experience
frightened me It was,

it sent shivers
down my spine.

I just had--

--There's something going on
here beyond just uhh,

just an
old house.

Spirits have an electrical
energy of their own

and when their manifesting or
trying to communicate with you

that energy can interfere with
these electronic devices

and even turn them on when
they're not plugged in.

♪

Brett:The amount of
activity has escalated

since my first experience,
basically the last ten years,

it's gotten more
intense.

Everybody who goes there has
an experience at some point.

Narrator: In 2013 Lynn decided
to confront her fears

and returned to
the lake house.

♪

After 30 years I decided now
come on, I'm going there,

I'm going to clean it, I'm
not gonna be afraid.

It's been 30 years,
this is ridiculous.

So, I'm gonna go there and we're
gonna spend the night,

my husband and I
and we're going to,

you know, everything's
gonna be fine.

(vacuum humming)

So, I'm upstairs
vacuuming.

(vacuum stalling)

I heard this
horrible noise

and I was like, "Oh no, the
vacuum cleaner just broke."

So I shut it off and the
noise is still going on.

(vacuum stalling)

So, I followed
the noise.

♪

♪

Narrator: After 30 years
of staying away from

the old house she had
inherited Lynn Bringman

had finally returned
but the strange events

that kept her away
were still occurring.

(rattling)

Lynn: And in the back
of the pink bedroom

there was a metal fan and
that had turned on.

And it was like hitting
the sides, which is,

it's a metal fan so it
was hitting the metal.

(rattling)

(thunder crashing)

(screaming)

And a storm
brews

and the electricity
blows, no electricity.

I'm like, "Oh!"

It's pitch black.

(thunder rumbling)

(door creaking)

I'm like, "This
is horrid."

♪

(door creaking)

Narrator: Unable to
continue her work,

Lynn and her husband
decided to go to bed.

So, I've got this one
little flashlight

and I'm not going from
point A to point B

without this
flashlight.

♪

So I go to bed and I put the
flashlight on the nightstand.

And I tossed and turned and
it was okay and I fell asleep.

Then I woke up in the
middle of the night

and I had to go to
the bathroom.

♪

I went, I reached
for the flashlight

and I couldn't find
the flashlight.

The flashlight is no
longer on the nightstand.

♪

The flashlight is
now on a table

in front of the fireplace
in the bedroom.

♪

I would never in a million
years gone from there

to here without
a flashlight.

(stammers)

I wouldn't have
done it.

Some spirits may
be being playful

and hide objects
to confuse you.

They may be doing it
in a nasty way

to make your life
more miserable.

The door to the
hallway was open.

♪

(screaming)

But in the middle of the
pitch black is a darker

than the dark
figure.

And it's kind of, not glowing
but kind of moving,

there's movement
to it.

(screaming)

It's hard to describe because
the place is pitch, pitch black!

And it's even darker in
the middle of that movement.

I mean it was just,
it was horrible.

There was no question
in my mind.

No question that it was
my two godmothers,

Aunt Sada,
Aunt Helen.

♪

Well, that's the first time
I actually, you know,

I'd smelled things, I had felt
things, I had heard things.

This is the first
time I had--

--It is, that's the first
time I'd ever seen anything

and it is terrifying,
I'm sorry.

It's terrifying.

♪

After I saw that figure
I was thinking,

"Get out of
this house."

I wasn't thinking anything
else after the 30 years

and all that I thought, "I'm
doing it, I'm doing it,

I'm doing it and
all this happened.

I thought, the only thing I
could think of was,

"Get out of
this house."

There was nothing else
crossing my mind.

Shadow figures are considered
a more negative type of entity

and when you
see one it probably

has some sort of
negative connotation.

Something bad might
be about to happen.

♪

Narrator: Terrified of her
experiences and dreading

what might happen next Lynn
decided to seek help.

Lynn: We decided to bring
in a paranormal team

just to see for sure
because everybody felt

like this overwhelming
feeling of--

--Now I personally
felt like dread,

you know, just
being in there.

We wanted
confirmation.

We wanted to know what
was in the house

or who was in
the house.

Our team's been
around since 2007.

We've worked on well
over 400 cases to date.

The first time we pulled
up to this property

it looked like an old
creepy lake house.

You kinda got the
chills seeing it.

♪

So when we walked into
this home you could feel

that you weren't
wanted there.

Like there was a
sort of energy

that was like trying
to get you out.

When we did enter the house
we did feel uncomfortable.

Now we understand why Lynn was
having that same experience.

♪

When you feel that sort
of energy, you kind of

have to beware cause you don't
know what you're stepping into.

♪

When we first began
the investigation,

we started in the
master bedroom.

I set up three pieces of the
equipment on the floor,

I had the EMF detector,
I have a E-pod

and I had a recorder
sitting on the floor.

So I was trying to draw that
energy to those devices.

♪

I was walking
around

and I actually felt
something brush up.

♪

♪

Narrator: Lynn Bringman
had brought

in paranormal investigators
to probe into

!who was haunting their families
old lake house.

Karlo:I was walking
around

and I actually felt
something brush up.

It was like this cold feeling
up against my elbow.

And then it
moved away.

♪

And right after that is when
we actually heard

the humming out
in the hallway.

(woman humming)

I actually heard a
woman humming

almost like she
was cleaning.

Like humming and
singing in a way.

(woman humming)

Umm at that moment I was
actually holding a camcorder

and I heard some scuffles
straight ahead of me.

♪

(slow heartbeat)

I panned up and I
actually caught

a shadow man stepping
out of the bathroom.

♪

It looked at me and stepped
back into the bathroom.

♪

I was like, "Holy
(bleep), Holy (bleep)!"

I was freaking out, I mean, I
wasn't expecting it, you know?

This thing just steps
out the bathroom

and there it is,
you know?

Just dark mass, it's darker than
dark, it has no facial features.

It's just a
black mass.

♪

When you have that sort
of energy, you have

to watch yourself because you
don't know what could happen.

During my initial talk with
Brett he had mentioned

that Aunt Helen really didn't
like people coming

into her home, uhh
including family members.

So, with us coming in there
that presence was angry

that we're actually
intruding on their property.

Some spirits are
extremely territorial

because even though
they're dead,

they consider that
location theirs.

They lived there, they
own it, you're the intruder.

♪

Karlo: When we caught the
!humming upstairs we went to Lynn

and actually played
that evidence for her

and she had mentioned
that Aunt Helen

would always hum and
clean up in that area.

(woman humming)

After we finished up the
investigation upstairs,

we decided to
go downstairs

and see if we could collect
anymore evidence.

(deep growl)

And we seen what appeared to be
something moving on the porch

and one of the investigators
took a picture.

♪

We actually captured what
appeared a woman standing

on the outside of
the porch area.

To us we believe
it was Aunt Helen.

♪

I think Aunt Helen doesn't want,
or makes everybody uncomfortable

there because
it's her place.

It was her
place for--

--60 years and she doesn't
wanna share it with anybody.

She didn't really
share her things.

♪

When the spirit
you're dealing with

is a deceased relative
particularly one you

did not get along
well with,

that negative entity
may still not like you

and want to continue to
cause you trouble.

So this an extremely
difficult situation.

I believe Aunt Helen is actually
holding onto this home

because she was very
possessive of it

and she was very
mean in life,

she's gonna carry that
in the afterlife.

♪

When I sent the evidence to
Brett, he was shocked umm,

to actually see what we
captured, you know, the video,

the picture, all the
EVP's we caught.

You know, that validated
his experiences

of what's happening
there.

They confirmed it, they
confirmed who we thought

and they gave us
confirmation

that there's something
definitely going on.

The option to cleanse
the place was given to us.

We decided
not to do it.

It's also family
you know?

As irritating they it can be
and as scary as they can be.

It's still--

Having family around
is also kind of,

it's mixed feelings.

A lot of it's scary experiences
but also a lot of--

Stuff that you're
okay with too.

♪

Karlo: And for
them to know

that it could possibly
be Aunt Helen,

maybe they'll feel more
comfortable going there.

You may be reluctant to
get rid of the spirit

of a former family member
because family's are supposed

to take care of
one another.

And you might feel a lot of
guilt when you are trying

to rid an entity
from your house

of someone you maybe
grew up with.

Everybody who goes there has
an experience at some point

and if it does get worse, maybe
we'll have the house cleansed.

And certainly,
the intensity.

I mean, the shadow
figures,

the voices coming in your
