And though the news was rather sad,

I read the news today, oh boy.

The thing is, you know, that I was asked

I decided to tell him the truth.

But I really didn't want to say
anything, you know, because if I'd had

decision, you know, if I'd had it my
way, I wouldn't have told anyone, you

because I'm not trying to spread the
word about this.

But the man from the newspaper is the
man from the mass medium, you know. I'll

keep it a personal thing.

If he does too, you know, if he keeps it
quiet, but he wanted to spread it, so

it's his responsibility, you know, for
spreading it, not mine.

But you're a public figure, and you said
it in the first place. You must have

known that it would have made the
newspapers.

Yes, but to say it, you know, is only to
tell the truth.

I'm telling the truth, you know. I don't
know what everyone's so angry about.

Well, do you think you have now
encouraged your fans to take drugs?

I don't think it'll make any difference,
you know. I don't think my fans are

going to take drugs just because I did,
you know. But the thing is, that's not

the point anyway. You know, I was asked
whether I had or not.

And then from then on, the whole bit
about how far it's going to go and how

people it's going to encourage is up to
the newspapers and up to you, you know,

on television.

I mean, you're spreading this now at
this moment.

This is going into all the homes, you
know, in Britain.

And I'd rather it didn't, you know. But
you're asking me the question. You want

me to be honest. I'll be honest, you
know.

But as a public figure, surely you've
got a responsibility to lots and lots of

people. No, it's you've got the
responsibility.

You've got the responsibility not to
spread this now.

You know, I'm quite prepared to keep it
as a very personal thing.

London, where the latest Beatle record

this moment being built up.

Not just a single performance, but a
whole montage of performances.

With some friends in to help the
atmosphere, this is quite an occasion.

I think that will do for the vocal

backing. Very nicely. We'll get the
musicians in now.

There's several days' work on that tape.
For perhaps the hundredth time, the

engineer runs it back to the start for
yet another stage in the making of an

almost certain hit record.

The supervisor is George Martin, the
musical brain behind all the Beatles'

records.

There's the orchestra coming into the
studio now, and you'll notice that the

musicians are not rock and roll
youngsters. The Beatles get on best with

symphony men.

The boys began by making a basic
instrumental track on their own. Then

added on top of that a second track of
vocal backgrounds, and they've just

a third track. Now comes the final
stage.

It brings in a solo vocal from John
Lennon, and for the first time, the

orchestra. Here then is final mixed
track take one of a song which we offer

the whole world, All You Need Is Love.

All right, we're ready? Let's go for it

inside almost as marvelous as out. Well,

perhaps not quite, now that the supercar
has been dolled up in a grand manner.

Not even a beetle could wait for more.

From front bumper to back, it's been
beautifully adorned after the manner of

Romany art.

The decoration cost 1 ,000 pounds.

And as it's John Lennon's car, nobody
can imagine what it may affect if

auctioned in years to come.

That's it. Ready to roll to Weybridge, a
gypsy -type caravan.

A present for a four -year -old who
probably has everything.

The name Julian Lennon, son of John
Lennon, who else but the Beatles.

It's about 4 ,000 pounds worth of gaily
painted, renovated rolling stock. A big

toy for a little boy.

It even needed a police escort.

But then, it's not every dad that spends
that sort of money on his young son.

This might be one occasion when money
can buy love.

And so the wagon rolled west, onward
towards Weybridge and the Lennon

Sometimes the going got tough.

The pity of it all was that young Julian
wasn't there to see his present arrive.

He was on holiday with Mum and Dad.

If he ever decides to leave home, and it
seems hardly likely, he'll be the best

equipped gypsy on the road.

Why the name Jason?

Maureen picked the name Jason because I
picked Zach, you see, so it's Maureen's

turn. Any particular reasons for Jason?

Oh, well, it's a good name.

Doesn't, you know, it's not mean in
anything.

Now, does the baby look more like
Maureen or more like you?

He looks exactly like Zach was when he
was born, but he looks like me anyway.

Were you expecting, did you want a boy
this time? Yeah, it didn't matter this

time, a girl or a boy.

Just as long as they're both all right.

It's just one day old. I know it's
probably a silly question, but any plans

this baby? Any plans for Zach at all?
Perhaps two new drummers?

No, no, no. No plans yet. It's both too
young. Just let them play as long as

they like, then see if they want to do
anything.

Would you like a larger family still?

I don't know. Two is sort of all right.
You know, if we only have two, that's

all right. And if we have more, that's
all right.

They seem to be among your supporters
now. How do you feel about that?

I feel a great promise for the younger
generation, because if they take up this

transcendental meditation, they are the
ideal of energy and intelligence in the

younger generation, and that will really
bring up the youth on a very good level

of understanding and intelligence.

I'm very happy about it, that they heard
my lecture last evening, and they

talked to me for about an hour after the
lecture.

They seem to be very intelligent.

We were talking about the

space between the sun and the

moon.

True.

Their return from Bangor after studying
techniques of transcendental meditation

was marked by the tragic news of Brian
Epstein's death.

It's terrible.

What are your plans now?

Well, we haven't made any.

I mean, we've only just heard.

John, where would you be today without
Mr. Epstein?

I don't know.

Are you driving down to London tonight?

Yes, somebody's taking us down here.

You heard the news this afternoon, I
believe?

Yes. And Paul's already gone down? Yes.
I see.

You've no idea what your plans are for
tomorrow?

No, no, we'll just go and find out, you
know.

Just have to play everything by ear.

Yes. I understand that Mr. Epstein was
to be initiated here tomorrow.

Yes.

When was he coming up? Was he coming up
in the afternoon?

Coming tomorrow, Monday, that's all we
knew.

Had you told him very much about the
spiritual regeneration movement? Well,

much as we'd learned about spiritualism
and various things of that nature, then

we'd tried to pass on to him and he was
equally as interested as we are, as

everybody should be.

He wanted to know about life as much as
we do.

Had you spoken to him since your...

since you became interested this
weekend?

No. I spoke to him Wednesday evening,
the evening before we first saw

Maharishi's lecture, and he was in great
spirits.

And when did he tell you that he'd like
to be initiated?

Well, when we arrived here on Friday, we
got a telephone call later that day to

say that Brian would follow us up and be
here Monday.

Do you intend returning to Bangor before
the end of this conference?

We probably won't have time now because
Maharishi will only be here till about

Thursday and we'll have so much to do in
London that we'll have to meet him

again.
