community colleges in the same county.

So that's 15 miles apart.

just breeds some rivalry.

I remember in the 50s we'd be playing
Independence and kids getting in fights

and turning a car
over or things like that.

It was pretty heated.

They just talk a bunch of trash
and say that there's so much

better than us when really
we're pretty equally talented.

People do not mess
around with this at all.

It's a big deal.

The independence coach caught a couple of

progress on closing the racial

scoring gap on the ACT
college entrance exam.

reading, and science.

For blacks, only 6% of all test-takers were
deemed college-ready in all four areas.

In mathematics, white had
an average score of 21.5.

We have still been left behind.

see that there were things he had to learn.

than what Kansans are used to.

It was just a question, would he
fit with our way of doing business?

In the end, all the
success we've had is really

because the answer was
yes to those questions.

So he could fix it.

I think that over time, he gets to know
people, because this is a small town.

I think he does get a little bit
more comfortable over time.

Mine is, we got more kids' scholarships
than any school in the country,

Independence with average

facilities that we created
