(upbeat flute music)
- Are you leaving princess?
- Yes grandfather, we have to go to Cahokia.
- We are very sad to see you go.
- Throughout this journey we've had to say goodbye
to many friends.
But at this moment, my heart is filled with sadness.
Thanks to you I have discovered
the great power of our people.
I will be forever grateful for
your warm welcome and support.
- Thank you Pocahontas.
Bless you.
- Goodbye my friends, goodbye, we'll be back!
(shouting goodbyes)
- Pocahontas Goodbye, bye!
- Deepest thanks to you, great Navajo.
It is thanks to you that abundance
will spring forth from this dry land!
Noble Apache, the rhythm of mother nature
is reflected in your nomadic life.
And you, Yuma and Tarahumara,
never cease the struggle for your freedom.
- Thank you for coming, Pocahontas.
- You are the future of our great nation,
and to you Hopi, eternal thanks.
You have shown wisdom and strength
in creating a prosperous life while still
respecting the laws of mother nature.
As for you, you are the most precious of all.
May you have a happy future.
- You're crying Pocahontas.
- I'm crying because I'm happy,
happy that I can take you all in my arms
and hold you close.
But I'm sad too because I have to leave.
- All our blessings go with you.
- Thank you grandfather, we will
think of you often on our journey.
- Give me a hug.
(crying)
May the heavens clear all danger from your path.
(crying)
I know that you will bring honor
to your father and grandfather.
- You can count on me, grandfather.
- It worries me to think of my grandson
making his own way in the world,
but it also makes me very proud.
(birds chirping)
(shouting goodbyes)
(emotional music)
- I'll see if I can find a way across.
Come on, come on!
(quacking)
(horse whinnies)
I can't understand what caused that duck
to fall out of the sky, I sense danger here!
- You stay on guard, I'll scout ahead.
- [Man] You want your duck, take it.
- You frightened me.
I thought you were pale faces riding big deer.
- They're not deer, they're called horses.
- I never saw a horse before today.
I had no idea what a horse looked like.
Believe me, they really do look like deer.
- Greetings, my name is Pocahontas.
What's yours?
- P-p-Pocahontas?
You're the messenger sent by the Great Sprit
that everybody's talking about!
- That's me.
(laughing)
- Wow, Little Puma's met the Great Sprit's messenger hey!
(laughing)
- Little Puma, come back!
Don't leave without telling us something about yourself.
Come on, wait!
- I'm a Choctaw, traveling with two friends.
We're on our way to the sacred village of Cahokia.
(laughs)
Then I meet up with you!
I never expected such great luck!
Little Puma greets you.
- Well I'm very happy to have the honor of meeting you.
- We knew you were on your way here.
My two friends on the other side
of the river are watching for you.
We've been waiting for you for 15 days.
- You're very patient.
- That's very true.
For example, when I go hunting
I've been known to let several moons pass
while I carefully stalk my prey along the riverbank.
And now if you like, I can lead you where you want to go.
To the sacred village of Cahokia.
I'm ready to be your guide.
- All right, so show us the way.
- I'll be walking.
I'm not getting on any deer horse.
- We're not in any hurry.
We've come a long way.
We reached the Mississippi.
- We appreciate your observation Mawk, but who asked you?
- Uhh, but this isn't the Mississippi.
It's the Arkansas.
- Oh those pale faces must have moved it last night.
(laughing)
Sorry I can't be right all the time, can I?
- The Mississippi is much further east.
We'll find Cahokia at the point where the Missouri River
flows into the Mississippi.
- Very well, now show us the way all right?
- All right, but it's more difficult here.
It's shallower upstream.
(pleasant music)
(meowing)
(yowling)
- Wouldn't you rather ride with me on my horse?
Come on Little Puma, climb on.
It's not gonna hurt you you know.
- I...
- Come on, don't just stand there, get on!
There you go.
(laughing, yelling)
(laughing)
(pleasant music)
- Hey it's me, I'm back!
I met all the braves who are traveling with Pocahontas!
We're gonna be their guides
and that brave let me ride his horse!
They all have horses.
- Pocahontas, is that her there?
- That's her! - Pocahontas!
I am Tattooed Serpent of the Natchez tribe.
- I am Pocahontas.
- We welcome you, Pocahontas.
We would like to join you.
- I'm a Cherokee and my name is Whistling Wind,
and believe me I'm very happy you're here.
- [Pocahontas] And I'm very happy to meet you.
- We've been waiting for you to come.
- That's wonderful because I don't know this region.
- Don't worry, no problem.
We'll be proud to be your guides, Pocahontas.
(cheering)
(laughing)
(pleasant music)
- Here's some shrimp we just caught in the Arkansas River.
- When I eat sunflower seeds I just can't stop.
- I love shrimp.
So good I...
- Oh shrimp just stinks.
Give me rabbit anytime.
- Well if you want, I can do the rabbit dance.
(laughing)
(flames crackling)
(pleasant music)
- Our friends suggest we
travel down the Arkansas River
by canoe, but I think we'd be better off on horseback.
We'd be much faster.
(owl hoots)
(meowing)
(hooves clattering)
(yowling)
(meows)
(hooves clattering)
Wait, let them be, wait.
- What's going on Mawk?
- It's Little Puma and his two friends, I'm sure.
- Looks like them.
- Didn't they tell us they didn't know how to ride horses?
- That's what they said.
- I'll teach them.
- Mawk, wait!
You can't go making accusations without any proof.
- They've been out all night riding our horses.
- But there aren't any horses missing, I checked.
- Well I think we're ready now to set off with Pocahontas.
- All right, but I've got a sore butt.
And let's stop pretending
we don't know they're called horses.
- Come on, we'll ride ahead, and don't say anything.
- Pocahontas is too kindhearted.
- Where have you been my friends?
Did you enjoy your ride?
- We found our own big deer,
so we'll be able to ride along with you.
- [Brave] They're called horses.
- They're beautiful horses.
Wherever did you get them?
- From the pale faces.
There's a fort not far from here.
- Well done, we all knew you'd be good companions.
(soothing music)
Mawk, let's slow down.
How are you doing?
You look tired.
- We're doing all right Pocahontas,
but our butts have turned to mush.
(laughs)
- Put this hide on your horse's back to protect yourself.
You'll see, it works very well.
- You're very kind, Pocahontas.
(laughing)
- How did you capture these horses?
- There are some pale faces living near here
who have lots of horses.
- Pale faces around here?
- Yes, there are pale faces in villages among our people.
They settle here and they're trying to live on our lands.
- When the white soldiers departed,
they left many things behind.
- Yes, tools, firearms, and an animal
we've never seen before they call the pig.
- And that's not all.
They also left a disease that has
struck down many of our people.
- Hey come on, if we keep moving so slowly
by the time we reach Cahokia,
our horses will all have turned white.
We've got to start getting a move on right?
What do you say?
- It won't be long now, we're just about there Mawk.
- Look around you at this vast plain
and all the villages which have been built here.
Most of them are fortified, but we can
enter as we please to buy and sell.
- You buy and sell, that's all you do?
You're just lowly traders then.
- We're also warriors.
- [Mawk] So what do you trade, who buys your stuff?
- We buy in Mexico and sell up north.
- What are you talking about?
- Get this our new guides buy and sell stuff.
- Have you ever been to the
sacred village of Cahokia before?
- Our grandparents built it
and it's as beautiful as it is prosperous.
- But the village has changed since the white man came.
There are many white men around Cahokia now.
- Now that you are among us, we hope
that the Great Sprit will grant us his protection.
We want Cahokia to be as beautiful
and prosperous as it used to be.
- Do we have any choice but to take
to the warpath against the invaders?
(cawing)
(dramatic music)
(screaming)
(thunder booms)
(crying)
(cawing)
(flames crackling)
(groaning)
(moaning)
- Hey!
Heyah!
(dramatic music)
(horses whinny)
- Finally it's the Missouri!
- Yes we made it.
The Mississippi isn't far now.
- [Pocahontas] How do we get across?
- [Little Puma] Behind those cliffs
there's a landing with canoes.
(cawing)
- Look Mawk, your lynx is making signals.
(laughs)
He's so funny.
- Yes but he's acting very strangely these days.
He's been keeping his distance from me.
- Maybe he senses something.
Are you trying to tell me something?
I think your lynx is jealous, yes.
- Why in the world would he be jealous, and of whom?
- [Pocahontas] Clearly because of me.
You don't pay enough attention to him anymore.
(laughs)
- I didn't realize I had such a perceptive lynx.
I always knew he was intelligent,
but sometimes he surprises me.
(laughing)
- Are you princess Pocahontas?
We welcome you.
- Thank you very much, you're very kind.
- I am very pleased to have had the honor
to help you cross the great river, princess.
- How long have you been ferrying people across the river?
- A long time ago I used to do several crossings a day,
but now with the pale faces...
- I know, I hear they treat you very badly.
- [Man] We rid the Hopi of the clan of the spiderwoman.
Perhaps you can help us drive out the invaders.
- Yes, but how?
- It's not for me to say.
It's up to you to find the way.
- When all the tribes of our people are united,
then we'll be strong enough.
That's the will of the Great Sprit.
- [Brave] We're bringing Pocahontas's message to Cahokia.
- Yes, you're right.
- Now that we have all our horses again,
we have to be on our way.
- Oh!
Beautiful.
- When you're in a hurry, a horse is very useful
and we're in a hurry to get to Cahokia.
- And I'm holding you up with my chatter.
Hurry now, on your way.
Princess, I can't begin to tell you
what a great pleasure it was to meet you.
I want to wish you and your companions a successful journey.
- Despite the difficulties, our warm welcome
everywhere has restored our spirit.
- Our people will speak of Pocahontas for a long time.
- May the Great Sprit bless you!
- [Man] Goodbye Pocahontas!
(pleasant music)
(cawing)
- Look!
That's Cahokia!
(dramatic music)
The base of the main pyramid is a full 1,000 meters around
and the pyramid itself is 30 meters high.
Do you see the three different terraces?
They're enormous!
- Oh it's all so incredible.
I've never seen a village like it.
It makes me proud to be part of such a great nation.
- It was the pale faces who called us Indians.
Well, before us is the creation
of our great Indian ancestors.
(pleasant music)
- This great village is rooted in our sacred land.
Long live the Indian nation!
(cheering)
My friends, let's head to the
sacred site of Cahokia, a united people!
(cheering)
(dramatic music)
