trade with other tribes.

Often, we travel far
beyond the Rocky Mountains

to trade with the Blackfeet,
the Crow, and the Cheyenne.

As long as we can trade
with the other tribes,

we live in peace.

The tribes in this territory cook

We the Thompsons live up north

where the mountains are covered with snow

and the salmon swim up the
river by the thousands.

We have brought you these gifts

that we hope you will accept.

- We have traveled many
moons to hear your message.

We come from the region
(dramatic music)

of the Great Salt Lake.

Our people have undergone many hardships.

Our ancestors were driven from their homes

by the shaking earth.

Then, we settled in an area where

the sun became so hot, it
was difficult to breathe,

so we moved on, never losing courage,

carving homes out of the living rock,

raising our temples to the sky.

We have learned that, whatever happens,

there is always hope.

- I am touched by the courage

and the will of your people, great chief.

- We thank you, great chief,

for your welcome and your gift.

- We are the representatives
of all the Paiutes.

We greet you in their name, Pocahontas.

Our tribes are spread
out over a great area,

and we have no fertile land,

but we are skilled hunters,

and our women cook with
the plants they find,

and we always pray to the great spirit.

We all look forward to
hearing your message.

- Thank you, I'm flattered
by your friendship and trust.

- I am chief of the Flatheads.

We are called that because it is said

we flatten our infants' heads at birth,

but it is only a legend.

We live to the east of
the Rocky Mountains,

and the great spirit
allows us to hunt bison

every year when they migrate across

the Great Plains in the summer.

(birds caw)

As a gift of welcome, we have brought you

the symbols of our hunt.

Here, Mock, I leave these
precious gifts in your care.

- We are the Pierced Noses.

We get our name from our tradition

of wearing shells in our noses.

Our territory extends north
from the Shoshone lands

to the wooded mountains to the west.

We have a reputation for
generosity, courage, and trading.

Our women sew very beautiful bags.

We have brought one today as
a gift for you, Pocahontas.

- I've never seen such a beautiful bag,

Great Chief Pierced Nose.

I'm very grateful.

(fire crackles)

- We of the Shoshone tribe believe that,

after a person dies, his soul flies away

to join the coyotes and wolves

who created the earth.

The animals receive the dead person

and cleanse his soul so
that he can live again.

(wolves howl)

One day, I went to pray
to the great spirit,

and I tripped over a rock and
fell, knocking myself out.

As I lay there, I felt my
spirit leaving my body,

and I woke up in another land.

- Oh.

- Then I came to in the
place where I had fallen.

I'll never know whether it was a dream,

or whether it wasn't.

- When we're out hunting,
after we kill an animal,

we turn its head toward the east

so that its soul can find its way

back to the coyote and the wolf.

It's important to respect the normal cycle

of the animal's life.

(men chatter)

(Pocahontas gasps)

(dramatic music)
- A warrior's been hurt.

He fell off his horse, and
it kicked him in the head.

- What?

- I knew those animals were dangerous.

- Quick, we have to go see.

(horse neighs)

and the arid deserts.

will be united with respect
for traditions and customs,

when we will all speak one same language.

This is what the great spirit asks of you.

and above all else, teach your children

what our fathers and mothers taught us

so that our nations can prosper forever

with respect for what
the earth has given us.
