a hand. He's not got an easy trip.

Half of this 1,000-kilometre journey

from Cairns to Bamaga
is on the dirt.

Roy was on schedule
to catch the last ferry

across the Jardine River at 6pm.

There goes any chance
of crossing the ferry today.

I don't know if I've hit a rock
or something and it just popped up.

It's not good.

The cracked hub cover
isn't just cosmetic.

It's the reservoir for oil that
lubricates the wheel bearing.

If the oil runs dry,

the bearing will overheat and seize,
disabling the truck.

I think I've just clipped the rock
off the road. BLEEP happens, really.

So, I've just gotta
come up with a solution.

Bodgie this one up. Make it work.

It's all I can do.

Surely, you've got a box

so it's pretty nerve wracking,

I've done my first run.

That's exciting.

But trucking cattle
is another level.

I'm really nervous about this job,

you know, especially
when I'm doing the job for you,

but then also the fact
that I'm carting the cattle,

and, you know, they're alive
and they're breathing,

and they need a bit more care
and attention

than the cotton or the grain.

So, how much experience
have you had with cattle?

I've grown up with cattle. I've been
around cattle my whole life.

But I'd say I'm rookie. Rookie.

Trucking cattle is one of the
most dangerous cargoes of all.

They move and sway,
tilting the trailers.

Rollovers are a constant threat.

Shelley will be carting cattle
for farmer Mark Talbot,

one of Sludge's
most important customers.

So, Mark's a good guy.

and also, it's got
the electric steering in it,

which is something
you may not have experienced before.

Doing the b-double for cattle's
gonna be very interesting.

We might go for a run and put it all
through the truck wash

and get it all cleaned up,
ready for tomorrow.

it's gonna cook the wheel bearing
and collapse the wheel bearing,

so I really need it to hold.

It's a lot of responsibility.

It's not just a big job for me,

but it's also remembering
that this is Sludge's job,

so I've got to get it done for him.

Shelley, we've got to get mobile,

but before we do, let's have
a quick look around this trailer.

When you're loading
and unloading trailers,

be very, very careful
not to put yourself in a position

where you can be pinned back
against something

with cattle coming back
on top of you.

Use the internal gates
as a protection.

When you're loading cattle, always
keep yourself behind the gate,

put your foot on the bottom of it,
and shut like that.

That way,
if an animal kicks the gate,

your leg will absorb the impact

and it won't come back
and hit you in the face.

I think we better get going.

Shelley will be doing two jobs
for Mark,

one today and one tomorrow.

Before today's job even starts,

they must make
a two-hour, 170km drive

from Mark's base
to collect cattle from Kojonup.

Then it's back the way they came

to drop the cattle
at a yard in Bunbury.

MARK: Get yourself nice and straight
and lined up,

and you'll be able
to see the ramp in your back mirror.

The art of reversing
has so far eluded Shelley.

SHELLEY: This is the part
that I'm the most nervous about.

So, you wanna try
and get your trailers

as straight as you can get them.

You should be able see the ramp

to get these cattle there

We've got quite a bit
of rain coming.

The West Australian's
just putting up now.

With the bad forecast,

Mark and Shelley now need to squeeze
their two jobs into one day.

So, we'll have to get back
to get this job done tonight.

We don't have much choice now

because with this bad weather
coming in,

it'll get that wet, we won't be able

to get the truck in
where we've got to go. OK.

We'll have to get
these trailers changed over,

get the cattle in,
and get you to cart them down

to the other farm for us.

will run out of feed.

the green trailer on.

and you need another trailer before
you're really ever gonna learn.

But you'll get better as you go.

It's definitely something I need
to practice with the two trailers.

the right way,

which is what we've always
sort of said,

It's great that I've had

and the great thing is
about Sludge and Mark

is that I know that I'll be able
to continually learn from them,

especially with their depth
of experience

and years being behind the wheel.

to unload this cement powder
over there,

so I gotta race over
to make that time.

With the ferry only able
to carry one trailer at a time,

Roy will take
the much-needed cement powder

straight through to Bamaga first.

There's the last hurdle,
the last jump before the other side.

The ferry is the only way for
vehicles to cross the Jardine River.

Without it, Bamaga's supply route
is cut off.

You know, there's a 40-tonne
weight limit on the ferry,

and I'm gonna be 39.5 tonne.

So... Like, truck and trailer.

So I've got a little bit to think
about and a little bit nervous.

Roy has good reason to be nervous.

The weight of his truck and trailer
will ground the ferry.

To refloat the ferry, Foody's
taught Roy an old trucker's trick.

We've got to help the ferry out
cos it gets stuck,

cos, you know, 40 tonnes
on the ferry, it's gonna bottom out.

So we've got to go and drive forward
and budge it.
