Previously on Saints and Sinners:

Your wife is exhibiting signs of paranoia.

You cannot just hold my wife!

Legally, I can.

Where you been, boy?

Layin' low.

5‐0 been showin' up at my place with warrants.

You're the type of person I want to be in business with, Jabari.

As long as the Church land is still on the table.

Look, it's definitely on the table.

I want my church.

And if you don't wanna go to prison, you're gonna give it to me.

You signed your half of the church over to Ella?

It was just business, Jabari.

Just business?! You sold me out!

It's always personal, Levi.

That crazy bitch send you here to track me down?

We're concerned about the about the you're shining on all of us.

It'll take a lot more than my daughter's demon seed to take me out.

They've got secrets between 'em.

Dangerous ones.

And you don't know how far they'll go to keep 'em.

[Soft Music]

She was a kind soul, that one.

May she find peace in the Lord's arms now.

I didn't know she was struggling, I mean

I just can't believe she took her own life.

You don't really believe that, do you?

They said they found the pills, and the suicide note

on her nightstand in her quarters.

I don't understand, Mother. [Suspenseful Music]

What are you trying to say?

Are you that naive, Ella?

She was murdered.

By who?

By your own stain.

Kendrick.

I believe he was trying to get to me through Rowena.

I think you need to go lie down....

He broke into my home and put a gun to my head, Ella! Not three days ago.

I was lucky Detective St. Charle did his job for once.

Otherwise I would have been shot dead in my own living room

by that boy you're so intent on defending.

Why didn't you say something earlier?

Well, I just...

I wanted to spare you the grief.

Isn't it clear Ella, he is coming after us.

‐ Our family. ‐ Mother.

I realize that he killed E. J.,

but he's scared, and confused, and angry,

and he has one hell of a right to be.

How dare you stand in front of me and defend him!

He had a gun pointed at me!

[Huffs]

He's a monster.

He's still my son,

and the only one I have left.

And mother nobody is born a monster, so anything that he has become

it's my fault and yours.

Now, you listen to me, Ella Mae Byrd.

Life is hard, you of all people should know that.

But we do the best with what we are given.

Do you think I was born with all these opportunities?

No.

I was born into a filth you couldn't even dream of.

I had to work extra hard for everything I have!

For my education, my livelihood, my church.

And yet here we are, wasting precious time on some monstrous thug.

When we should be discussing how we're gonna save our church.

Mother, that's just what I'm trying to do.

I, I, I bought Levi's shares of Greater Hope,

but I just need to negotiate with Jabari.

[Scoffs]

Can you imagine the likes of him owning our church?

Men are weak, Ella.

It's up to women to clean up their messes.

It's our legacy, they are trying to steal your daddy's legacy!

So no matter what, by any means necessary,

you get back our church.

[Theme Music]

* Go on, lift you hands. Give God the praise *

* I fell so hard * * Hey *

* Lost my faith in God * * Hey *

* I couldn't even pray * * Hey *

* So I say *

* We're just sinners *

* Saved by grace *

[Billiards Balls Clacking]

Yo, check this out.

According to projections,

this move by UpSurge, will bring 10,000 new jobs into Cypress in the next 5 years.

Damn.

Big business come in and squeeze everybody else out.

It's what bougie folks call gentrification.

It's only a matter of time before we wiped out.

Yeah.

So what we gonna do about it, huh?

Corporate game just like the underworld.

You understand? Same hustle, different threads.

Any hustle got a playa at the head callin' all the shots.

See, we gotta cut off the head.

T.K., check this out.

See this cat, Malik Thompson.

I want you dig around, find out everything I need to know about him.

You understand? Put a tail on him if you have to.

See, the higher a man rises,

the bigger the skeletons are in his closet.

You got that?

Pfft, damn Rex, won't you let me loose, man

and let me do something to him.

Won't you let me rough him up a little bit

and show him who really runs what in Cypress, bro.

What'd you say?

Why don't you remind me,

of who runs what in Cypress.

Is it me? [Knife springs open]

Huh?

Or is it you?

Rex, why don't you let my guys handle it.

They trained for stuff like this. Discretion and whatnot.

See? Obedience.

That's what I like.

Anything that needs to be found, Dreads here can find it.

I want you to find me anything I can use on Malik Thompson.

Something to make sit down and listen.

You understand?

Alright.

[Clack of Billiard Balls]

[Christie] Trust me, this is a Cypress staple.

‐ Really? ‐ We used to eat here

‐ every Friday. ‐ Girl, where do you hide it?

[Laughs]

Christie.

‐ Um, Miles hey. ‐ Hey.

This is my friend Bethany, Bethany, this is Miles.

Nice to meet you.

Likewise.

How's Tamara?

She's eh, she's all right.

She's all right. Uh, she's under a lot of

pressure with everything, but she's gonna be good.

She's fine, yeah.

‐That's good to hear. ‐ Yeah.

I should, um...

‐Yeah, yeah. ‐ I should go.

I'll see you around.

Yeah, alright. Nice to meet you.

Yeah. Is everything ok?

[Exhales] Yeah, um that's the guy I was telling you about.

Oh, and his wife is the one you got in the accident with.

Christie.

I just would like to go one day,

one day without remembering all of the pain I have caused other people.

Listen, you have got to stop doing this.

You are allowed to go easy on yourself.

[Sighs] There's just, there's just so much you don't know about me.

Yeah, and when you're ready to share. I will be here for you.

In the mean time, there is no law against having a good time with me.

[Sniffles]

[Exhales]

[Lt. Hawkins] Detective.

Ah, Lieutenant.

I didn't see you at this morning's briefing.

Apologies. Been wrapped up in this Kendrick Murphy case.

I've been hitting dead ends with all my leads.

Mmm, it looks like I came at the right time then.

Your APB on Murphy just got a bite.

An orderly at Cypress General psychiatric ward says

someone who matches Murphy's description came in to visit a patient yesterday.

Walking around with a stab wound's not too hard to miss, apparently.

Says here he visited,

Gloria Stewart.

Been in the psych ward for decades.

Who is she?

Let's see.

An active member of Greater Hope.

Just like Debra Chase.

So Kendrick Murphy, makes an attempt on Leona Byrd's life,

and then he visits this woman in the psychiatric ward.

Can't be a coincidence.

There's only one way to find out.

Field trip.

[Laughs]

[Door opens]

Angela.

What are you doing in my office?

What are you doing in my church?

[Exhales]

You know what, it must really burn your ass,

to see me running this place after all of these years

of blaming me for E. J.'s death

and treating me like gutter trash.

No, actually it doesn't.

Because I'm gonna run your sorry ass out of here,

just like I did Levi.

Oh, and I'm almost half way there. Now that I own his share of the business.

Pssh, what makes you think I'm gonna do things your way?

Because you can't move without my approval.

Watch me.

You so much as put a finger on this church,

and I swear I'll have my attornys descend upon you

like a biblical plague.

But you know what, I'll cut you a deal.

I'll buy back the share of the church you stole,

and I'll sell you a good amount of land that the city owns.

Everybody wins.

Why, so you can scam me on some whack piece of land

on a side of town, where nobody goes and then take the credit as the mayor? Hmm?

Well, you can't afford to say no.

Malik, wants the church land, okay?

Without it, he walks.

Well then, I suggest you use your hood swag,

to convince Malik otherwise.

Or the deal is as good as dead.

That's my deal, Jabari. Take it or leave it.

As good as dead, huh? Like Travis Ford?

Yeah, that leverage huh, it's a beautiful thing ain't it?

You know what? You already played that card.

If you don't sign off on the bid to sell Greater Hope,

I'm gonna let the good people of Cypress know,

how Mayor Clayborne's husband really died.

And that's my deal, bitch.

[Door opens]

[Door closes]

[Dance Music Playing]

[Girl's giggling]

* I am wise *

* Left of this *

* Cares we had *

* Broken with *

* A new life *

[Door closes]

Ah, Mayor Johnson.

‐ I wouldn't have taken you as someone... ‐ A member of your club?

Do you mind?

Please, by all means.

I always found a man's choice of venue, very telling.

Hmm, what does this place say about me?

Oh, you enjoy fine things and,

you know where a deal can be made.

Thank you.

Mr. Thompson, the City of Cypress is prepared to slash some taxes,

in perpetuity.

Ah, yes but, Greater Hope is prime real estate.

Right in the heart of the city.

Location, location, location.

‐ Look, Mr. Thompson... ‐ Um, please,

call me, Malik.

*Lust inside (Lust inside)

* Memory (Memory)

Malik,

Greater Hope, is my family's legacy.

My father worked tirelessly tobuild this church up to where it is today.

And that's all I have left to remember him.

[Match strikes and burns]

I can see how hard that would be for you to let go.

Well, it's not just about me.

I would love for your company to be a part of our community, but

Greater Hope is our community.

But I'm sure that we can find something to satisfy the both of us here.

And please call me, Ella.

You have something in mind?

I think it would be smart for Upsurge to

get in bed with a powerful, charitable church.

Great PR.

Well, I must say you are a very interesting woman, Ella.

How bout we discuss those proposals more, say tonight over dinner.

[Malik] My hotel?

[Exhales]

Miles, where are we?

Babe, how you feeling?

Listen, listen, I know it may not feel like it,

but, but I did this for you. This is for your own good.

‐ No, I need to get outta here. ‐ Just hold on babe.

Wait a minute, just calm down, babe.

[Tamara screaming]

Wait.

‐ Please, no Miles. Please! ‐ Hey, what are you doin? I got it.

She's ok, what are you doin?

She's ok, listen I don't need. [Tamara screaming]

[Tamara screaming] ‐ Wha, what is that? What is that?

‐ It's a sedative, Mr. Calloway. ‐ Ok, she doesn't need that, ok.

She doesn't need that.

‐ She's just a little shocked. ‐ We need to calm her down.

‐ What arey ou giving her? [Tamara screaming]

[Tamara screams] Noooo!

What did, what did you give her?

She's responding well to the medication.

She's not herself, I mean she's like a zombie.

It's for her own good, Mr. Calloway.

You have seen for yourself her fits of rage.

I know that this is hard for you,

but you're doing the right thing.

She needs more help than you can provide.

There's no shame in getting her help.

How long, does she have to be here?

‐ Like? ‐ I can't say.

As soon as the medication wears off, she becomes quite hostile and violent.

More importantly until she can genuinely accept the reality

of her miscarriage, she'll only get worse not better.

She is suffering from severe PTSD,

which can only lead to more serious psychological disorders,

if we don't treat her properly.

Releasing her early can have disastrous consequences.

[Exhales]

Mmm hmm.

I tell you what, people of Cypress sure are hospitable.

Well, we aim to please.

Mmm.

[Mwah]

Mmmm, eh mmm.

[Exhales] ‐ Hold up, hold up.

I really need to leave.

To bad we didn't get to look over those generous tax proposals of yours, huh?

Well, I will have my office contact your office

and we'll set up a meeting.

Sounds like a plan, cause I already like what I'm seeing.

Mmm.

You know, I think we are going to work very, very,

[Mwah] very, good together.

[Suspenseful Music]

[Suspenseful Music]

[Suspenseful Music]

Hey, Shawn. Boss ain't gonna like what I just seen.

Was this man here visiting a patient?

Can we please talk to her?

Gloria?

Would you mind telling us about your visitor the other day?

My visitor?

Oh, right, my son.

Is he here? Did he come visit me again?

Oh, no, no, I forgot to dress up.

I forgot to dress up.

No, dear. Not today.

But please tell us more about your son.

Oh, my son.

He's so handsome.

And smart.

He said he gonna get me outta here soon.

Is that so? What did he say?

He said he knows secrets.

He knows all they secrets.

That how he gonna get me outta here.

He gonna make them pay.

For what they done.

[Laughing]

All gonna pay.

Who's gonna pay, Gloria?

The Byrds,

the Johnsons.

All of them.

What secrets, Gloria? I'd love to hear some of them.

I'm, I'm, I'm, sorry. Who are you?

What, what are you doing in my room?

Are you with my son? Is he, is he here?

Did he come visit me again?

Oh no, I forgot to dress up.

[Hawkins] Well that was a dead end.

We can't trust anything she's saying.

My gut tells me there's more here.

Kendrick, wouldn't risk surfacing in public after taking a shot at a cop for nothing.

Hmm, maybe but whatever she knows it's gonna take a lot of digging to get to surface.

If you ask me, it's not worth it.

Maybe so.

I wonder how she got here in the first place.

[Tam] You get off me! Get!

Listen, listen!

Why isn't anybody just listening to me?

Okay, I don't belong here.

They have my baby! No! Get off me!

No! Get off me! No! They have my baby! No! Get off me!

No! Get off me! No!

Get her to her room and double her dosage.

They have my baby!

My baby!

[Tamara Shouting]

My baby! No!

[Beating]

[Clears Throat]

City hall, please.

Yes sir, yes sir.

What the? Yo...

Hmm.

My man.

Rex Fisher. Hmm.

I see my reputation precedes me.

Consider this your welcome.

I understand you're new in town.

What can I do for you?

You been makin' moves on things that belong to me.

Now would you be referring to Cypress,

or Mayor Johnson?

That's cute.

Stay away from both.

You understand me?

Well it seems like your real beef is with the Mayor.

I mean, she's the one that's been thirsting after me hard.

And damn it if she ain't flexible.

[Rex Chuckles]

Yeah.

See...

I know rich boys like you.

Life hand you a golden ticket from the jump.

And you think the whole world is your playground.

The world is what I make it.

I learned that a long time ago, old man.

[Rex Chuckles]

I see you like to play, don't you?

I like to win.

Well I want you gone.

You got 24 hours to get your ass out of my town, pretty boy.

See I can't do that, Rex.

Because there's a lot of people in this town with a whole lot to lose.

Which means I have a lot to gain.

Now I know you think you the big daddy of Cypress and all...

but there's a new king in town.

New king, huh?

Well I'ma help you out, your majesty.

If you ever in your life

put your hands on Ella again...

you gon' be begging me for death after I'm done with you.

Now get your ass out of my car, you little bitch.

Let's go.

Get me another car.

Stacia.

Kendrick?!

There is a warrant out for your arrest.

Did you assault Leona Byrd?

Look, am I protected if I talk to you?

Of course.

Yeah, I did.

But it's more complicated than that.

She tried to kill me first!

Look, as your attorney, I advise you to turn yourself in.

We can work a deal...

[Sighs]

Let's talk inside.

Listen, you don't have to believe me,

but I'm telling you, there's something rotten going on

with Leona Byrd.

I mean, she was granted legal guardianship over this woman

Gloria Stewart,

and then had her committed.

I'm just tryin' to figure out why.

I don't know what you want from me.

Leona is our biggest client.

I can't go against her to help you.

[Phone Ringing]

Excuse me, I have to take this.

Hello?

Hey. I'm still settling into this office

and I have a few more boxes that need to go down to the records room.

You still have the key, right?

Great. Thank you.

[Sighs]

Look,

Kendrick, I can't make you turn yourself in.

But this will be the last time that we communicate in this way.

Wha‐ [Grunts]

Are you okay?

Yeah, I'm good.

You got a restroom around here I can use before I go?

Sure.

It's uh, second door on the left.

[Instrumental Music]

Ah, there she is.

You're late.

Well in my experience, it's better to come late than early.

Mm‐mm‐mm.

There is nothing more sexy than a powerful woman.

Well I hope the view doesn't distract you.

Oh, I don't think that'll be a problem.

Oh?

You're good at multi‐tasking.

I don't need to read those proposals.

Because I'm still taking your church.

[Slap]

What is this, some kind of joke?

[Malik Laughing]

Oooh...

you know I like that rough stuff.

‐ You want to do it on the desk? ‐ Screw you.

Oh, come on, Mayor.

Don't be dishonest.

You know you liked it.

You know you should be thanking me.

So you never had any intention of

entertaining my proposals.

It's like I said...

location, location, location.

There's no better site that I want for UpSurge than that plot of land.

And as you know, I'm a man who gets what he wants.

Get out.

See you tonight?

Oh...

Jabari and I are having an on camera interview with Samantha Pearson.

You know, to announce the deal.

It should be fun.

I said get out!

[Laughing]

[Bethany] I swear!

‐ Uh‐uh, no, I cannot believe you. ‐ No!

I do not believe you!

‐ Yes you do. Picture it. ‐ No I don't.

Wouldn't it be amazing to unplug

and be cozy in a far off cottage in front of a crackling fireplace?

Mmm...

‐ mmm maybe? ‐ Uh‐huh?

Okay, that doesn't sound too bad.

I secretly circle prospective cottages...

in the real estate section of the paper every Sunday.

[Laughing]

You do not carry it around with you!

One of these days I'm just gonna do it!

‐ It'd be nice to have some company, but, you know. ‐ Girl! What?

[Giggling]

‐ You taste that. ‐ I will.

‐ Fork. ‐ Mm‐hmm

Oh my God, Christie.

This is so good!

Mmm!

‐ Oh! ‐ Mm‐hmm.

‐ Well let me see... shoot. ‐ Mm.

Oh damn. [Laughing]

Yes I did. That's me!

‐ Mm‐hm, mm‐hmm, yup. ‐ Uh‐huh!

Alright, she's smart, and she's sexy,

and she cooks! Where have you been all my life?

Hey, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to kill the mood.

Oh no, no, no, no, no, no, no, it's um...

It's okay Christie, you can talk to me.

It's... just all of this is

it's so new for me.

Okay.

Bethany...

I value our friendship

so much.

These past few weeks have been so hard

and if it weren't for you...

I would have no one.

I mean, like...

I feel like I've known you for years.

Yeah.

But I just...

I end up hurting everybody in my life and,

I don't wanna hurt you.

The last thing I want to do is complicate your life, Christie.

Maybe I should just go.

I don't want you to go.

[Suspenseful Music]

[Suspenseful Music]

[Suspenseful Music]

[Suspenseful Music]

[Suspenseful Music]

What are you doing in here?!

Security!

Security!

Get out the way!

Security!

I don't care what this paper says.

Miles, I'm sorry

I'm sorry I lied to you before, but I...

I need you to believe me now, I did not lose our baby.

I didn't.

Tamara, I know first hand the pain of losing a child.

And it's not uncommon for the brain to create memories,

emotions, feelings to help fill the void of the miscarriage.

I did not miscarry my child.

Oh, oh, okay, Tam, Tam, Tamara, listen to me.

I'm here, you do not have to go through‐

‐ alone. ‐ I just want you to leave now.

‐ Just please, the both of you now. ‐ Tam, listen‐

Just leave!

I know my rights.

You can't keep me here past 72 hours.

I'll just wait you out. Get out.

[Slow Instrumental Music]

[Slow Instrumental Music]

Your wife needs you to be strong for her.

You did the right thing Mr. Calloway.

Leona?

It's Willis.

It's done.

[Jabari] I will see you there.

[Chuckles] All right.

[Sighs]

Baby.

We about to make so much money right now.

This deal is gonna change our lives.

What are you talking about?

Did Ella sign the contract?

No, but she's going to.

You always underestimate her.

You forget how dirty she plays.

Look, but, that is the point, okay?

See I have that Travis Ford murder over her head, mm‐hmm?

And if she doesn't call me before Malik and I

go on camera with Samantha Pearson tonight,

her dirty little secret is out.

Why would you open that up, Jabari?

You killed his wife.

Hey, trust me. Trust me.

Okay? Ella's gonna blink quick.

Cameras got a way of shutting shady bitches up.

It ain't right, though.

But, for right now...

lets focus... [Paige laughing]

on the bigger picture, huh?

[Giggling] Hmm?

The big picture. Me and you.

Our lives are about to change forever...

Rex is not gonna have power anymore,

Ella's not gonna have power anymore...

the city of Cypress is about to change for the better, baby.

Mmm...

[Muah]

What you mean you got nothin'?

I checked all my contacts, they had nothin'.

He's squeaky.

Here's all the dirt I could find on Malik.

A lot of white collar stuff.

Payoffs, ruthless bidding against competition.

Well done, Shawn.

[Knocking]

You on thin ice, T. K..

Don't make me say it again.

You understand?

Why haven't you answered my calls?

Hello to you too, Ella.

Jabari and Malik are doing a live

on‐air interview in just a couple of hours.

And he's going to ruin me.

Trouble in paradise?

‐ What? ‐ You and Malik.

Are you having me followed?

No, I had a tail on him.

You always loved that buttoned down type, right?

Not always.

Stop jerking me around, Ella Mae.

Tell me what you want.

Hey, guys.

Lemme holla at her a second, a'ight?

Jabari is blackmailing me to authorize the sale.

What's he got on you?

He knows that, um...

I suffocated Travis Ford.

[Chuckling]

I didn't know you had that in you, Ella.

I just assumed Jabari came back and finished what he started.

What he started?

Who you think killed Pamela Clayborne?

So, Jabari shot both Pamela

and Travis that night.

But Travis survives.

So he must've been there to finish the job. That's how he knows.

Sounds like he's just hustling you with threats.

He ain't got no proof.

Now you got something on him.

But if he mentions it on air, it doesn't matter if he has proof.

Oh, I can't..

can't believe that he killed Pamela.

She was my mentor and my friend.

Glass houses, Ella Mae.

So if it wasn't for Jabari...

Pamela would still be alive.

Hmm.

Jabari needs to be handled.

Once and for all.

‐ Handled? ‐ And, you know what I mean.

No I don't.

Why don't you get your boy Malik to do your dirty work?

So what, you not gonna help me?

[Scoffs]

[Cell Phone Vibrates]

Hello?

[Man] Good evening, Mayor Johnson.

Who's this?

[Man] I heard you got some problems.

I solve problems.

Is Jabari Morris a problem for you?

Ho did you get my number?

[Man] Listen very carefully...

if you want me to take care of Jabari Morris,

all you have to do is say nothin'.

If you remain silent, you are consenting.

[Suspenseful Music]

[Man] I ask you one more time.

Do you want me to take care of Jabari Morris?

Got it. [Ella Exhales Sharply]

[Dramatic Music]

[Instrumental Music]

[Judge Mitchell] Miss Stewart, please!

[Gloria Stewart] They killed my baby!

They lied to me!

[Judge Mitchell] Please refrain from outbursts.

[Gloria Stewart] I heard him cry! He was not stillborn!

They're lying to me! Leona Byrd is a liar!

[Grunts in Pain]

[Dramatic Music]

[Samantha Pearson] We are waiting on a big announcement from UpSurge CEO.

E‐Commerce comes to Cypress in a big way,

as online retail company, UpSurge, visits the city in

search of their new headquarters.

The growing enterprise could turn this sleepy community

into a beehive of economic activity

on par with other emerging US markets.

But is the small town thinking of Cypress ready for such a big business move?

[Cell Phone Vibrates]

[Samantha] Find out all the details in my interview with UpSurge CEO

Malik Thompson, and local real estate developer Jabari Morris.

[Sighs] Damn.

Right to voicemail.

She's calling your bluff.

Well if that's how she wanna play it...

let's show this city what Ella Johnson is really about.

Let's do it.

Oh, wait babe. I forgot my phone.

‐ I'll get it, I'll get it. ‐ Okay.

[Suspenseful Music]

[Jabari] Paige!

On the next Saints & Sinners.

There was a violent hit and run, outside the Channel 7 studios.

Paige!

All my prayers go out to the unfortanate victim and her family.

I know you was behind it. Admit it!

Oh my God!

I need your help.

You were hell bent on securing a property that wasn't for sale.

It's a shame all these people, will have to miss out

on the spoils of a burgeoning economy.

Due to one woman's selfish attachment.

What do you expect me to do?

What I've raised you to do!

You don't know her, like I know her, sis.

I'm doing my own investigation on that

monster who calls herself our Grandmother.

You said you wanted somebody to come help you

with your Kendrick problem, right?

What brings my favorite Granddaughter around?

You're a monster.
