moment caught on camera.

How does a child survive this?

They discovered

that he had a very
rare bone mutation.

And a man whose
followers claim he is

150 years old.

Has he somehow cheated death?

Could this be the oldest
man that has ever lived?

Around the world,

unexplained encounters
are being recorded.

Tonight's focus,
death-defying mysteries.

Our experts will
analyze the evidence.

At this point, I'm still
mystified by the whole thing.

Are we looking
at something that's CGI?

And then
pass a verdict.

We look at things that
are rare and unexplained.

The proof starts now.

Hello and welcome to the
"Proof is Out There."

A heads up, some
of you might find

the following
footage hard to watch

and viewer discretion
is advised.

The good news is the story may
have a terrifying beginning,

but it has a happy ending.

It's the middle part we are
still trying to figure out.

In July of 2017 in Zhuhai China,

it's a typical day
as a motorist drives

through a quiet parking lot.

There's nothing to indicate

that a potentially deadly
tragedy is seconds away.

Watch close on the right

of the security footage as
the car seems to hit a bump

and suddenly we see a child
emerge from under its wheel.

The car stops, but
incredibly the child seems

to walk away unharmed.

A similar miraculous
video emerged

from Nanjing, China in 2016,

and yet another in
Mumbai, India in 2018.

There have been actual
documented cases of humans born

with nearly
indestructible bones,

including a man in 1994

who walked away from
a near fatal car crash

virtually unharmed.

The x-rays showed that
he had negligible injuries

and the doctors, of course,
scratched their head.

They discovered that he had
a very rare bone mutation.

His bone density was actually
eight times more dense

than the average human beings.

When the doctors told the man
of what they found, he said,

"That doesn't
surprise me at all.

So no wonder I've ever been able

to stay afloat when
I try to swim."

Researchers at the Yale
Bone Center later discovered

the man wasn't the
only one with these

near indestructible bones.

Do these kids have
the same condition?

There are a few
open questions here.

First, are these
videos real or hoaxes?

And if they are real, how
did these kids survive?

Let's turn to our experts.

From these two
different perspectives,

there is a consistency

between how the vehicle travels

from its passenger
front side tire

and its passenger rear side tire

as it travels over the subject.

Would that be difficult

to manufacture the
vehicle's movements

over the subject?

Yes.

So we're going
to say this video is real,

but Michio Kaku says in a small,

almost miraculous
number of cases,

it may not require
superhuman bones

for children to walk away.

We think of the kid
as like a small adult,

but you realize that
the laws of physics

apply differently to the child.

The child has a much smaller
height off the ground.

This car goes over the
child very quickly,

minimizing the energy
transfer to the child,

while an adult would've
sustained maximum damage.

Dr. Kaku explains this

in terms most drivers
can understand.

When a car goes over a twig,

the twig hardly notices at all.

Doesn't necessarily break

because the time of
impact is so tiny

and the energy transfer to
the twig is almost minimal.

But think of a car
going over a log.

The log is much
taller than the twig,

and thus creates much
more sudden vertical force

between the car and the log.

The energy transfer
is much greater,

there's much more damage.

So our verdict,
the videos are real

and these children were
likely spared by physics

and tremendous good fortune.

However, the vast majority

of children in this
situation would not survive.

So always, always
drive carefully

and keep your kids
out of traffic.

It seems like everybody's

driving electric
vehicles these days,

but not the model
you're about to see.

Prepare to be shocked.

It's June 25th, 2021 just
north of Waverly, Kansas.

Severe thunderstorms

and flash flood warnings
have been issued for the area

and Carl Hobi is on the hunt.

I am a storm chaser

and I always have a
dash cam on my vehicle,

so I was recording.

His video shows a line

of cars slowly approaching
a rainy intersection.

Then out of nowhere, a bolt

of lightning strikes the
Jeep right in front of Carl.

Let's slow that down.

It appears that two massive
pulses blast straight

through the vehicle, reaching
as far as the grassy shoulder.

I just kind of froze.

I just kind of sat there

and I'm wondering
if these people are,

you know, dead or not.

Miraculously, the
car is left in one piece,

but what about
the family inside?

Some of the effects
that can be caused

by a lightning strike include
severe burns, cardiac arrest,

strokes, and very often death.

Yet somehow, the passengers
inside of this SUV

survived not one, but
two lightning strikes.

So how is that possible?

And why did
the lightning strike

this car twice, no less.

Could the people themselves
have acted as a lightning rod?

Some people actually
are more prone to being struck

by lightning than
your average person.

One very famous example was
the park ranger Roy Sullivan,

or as he came to be
known, the Spark Ranger.

Sullivan was hit by lightning

an astounding seven times.

Once while he was
driving in his car

and twice was when he was trying

to outrun a storm leading him

to believe lightning
was almost chasing him.

The question to
ask is why him?

Some speculate

that having a high iron content

in your blood can make
you more susceptible

to lightning since
metal is conducted.

Could that be the case here?

We haven't been able to
contact the people in the car

hit by lightning,
so we weren't able

to hear their side of the story.

Instead, we turn to our experts

to see if people truly
can be lightning rods.

Usually, when lightning
strikes a person,

it results in shoes
getting blown off

or jewelry getting
soldered together.

Now a less common occurrence is

what we call the
Lichtenberg figure.

Oftentimes it looks like roots

that have been implanted
into the skin of the person,

But do some individuals
actually attract lightning?

Why was ranger
Roy such a target?

Scientists don't
believe his iron levels

would make a difference since
the iron in blood is bonded

inside hemoglobin molecules
that don't conduct electricity,

Hernandez suggests it's a
matter of vocation and location.

He was a park ranger
out in Shenandoah National Park

and that put him
outdoors quite a bit.

When you're outdoors,
you're at risk

of getting struck by lightning.

Now the park gets about 35
or 45 thunderstorms per year.

In addition to living
in a very stormy region,

Sullivan sometimes worked
in an elevated fire tower,

which is where he
was officially struck

for the first time while
fleeing a lightning fire

in the structure.

And as for this family
in the electric vehicle,

in this case, Hernandez
says the lightning was drawn

to this vehicle instead of
the taller trees around it

for a simple reason,
conductivity.

Wood is not as
conductive as metal,

so lightning is
highly more likely

to hit a car versus a
wood tree in this case.

As for what
happened to the family,

the answer is one

of those quirks of physics
we love so much on this show.

A car is actually a safe
place during a thunderstorm

because it can act like what
is known as a faraday cage

where you can be safe from
electric fields inside

of the vehicle
even if the outside

of the vehicle experiences

a dramatically
high electric field

such as from a lightning strike.

Current travels
around the exterior

of the vehicle's
conductive metal

without going inside the car.

And Hernandez says
you can see the exact moment

the current is grounded.

If you pay attention,
you'll notice that there's smoke

that comes out off of
the right rear tire.

That's the energy that gets
transferred to the ground.

Our verdict, this
lightning strike was

a natural phenomenon,
albeit a terrifying one.

And as for the family inside,

we can say they all survived
with no major injuries

thanks to the
Faraday Cage effect.

We just hope there aren't
more Spark Rangers.

It's hard to imagine
a more tranquil activity

than flying a kite.

So it's shocking when something

so innocent turns
potentially deadly.

And the way this
strange story ended

had some people
calling it a miracle.

First, a warning, this video
may disturb some viewers.

It's August, 2020 in the city
of Hsinchu in northern Taiwan.

At an annual international
kite festival,

dozens of colorful
of creative kites

are soaring through the sky,

when suddenly
everything goes awry.

Cameras are rolling as the
tail of a 75 foot long kite

snatches up a
3-year-old spectator

in a strong gust of wind.

This footage is unbelievable,

but look again
from another angle.

The girl is carried
off

into the sky holding
on for dear life.

But at three years old,
how would a child be able

to hold on to something
that that seems so flimsy?

After about eight seconds,

the wind finally brings the
toddler closer to the ground

where people can grab her.

What's most amazing, once freed,

she only has some
scratches to the neck.

The footage is so crazy
it has people questioning

if it could possibly be real.

Now it's true the girl may
just have gotten tangled

in the kite, but its material is

so lightweight and slippery,

it has people wondering

if she could possess
abnormal strength

for a toddler that enabled her

to hold on while being
whipped through the air.

All she had to do is let
go and that, it's game over.

So some
believe the only way

the girl could have survived

this ordeal is with the
help of divine intervention.

According to
Christian faith tradition,

each person has their
own guardian angel.

Believers might say that

this would be an instance
where a guardian angel was

there to help safely
guide her back to Earth.

Look closely at
this clip of the incident.

See those glowing
orbs in the sky?

Some have claimed those
are guardian angels

appearing as balls of light.

These shocking clips
show the enormous power

of a sudden wind gust.

Hurricane force winds can
even tear apart buildings.

But did this video of
the Taiwanese toddler

actually happen?

Let's turn to our experts to see

if they were as blown
away as we were.

I didn't detect any
evidence

that these things were
computer graphic generated

or that these events were staged
in some way, shape or form.

The movements of the operators

of the cameras feels natural.

They're almost surprised
that this is happening.

If the video is
real, we need an explanation.

So, could guardian angels
have protected this toddler?

Some have perceived orbs in
the background in this image

and therefore extrapolated

that to mean angels
being present.

But because it was
a festival of kites,

those just look like other
kites in the distance

that maybe the sun
is reflecting off of.

So if not through
the help of angels,

how did the girl remain
attached securely enough

to make it down safely?

It's definitely
possible for a kite

to provide enough force
to lift a small child.

He's right about that.

Just look at what
this freak gust did

to a kite surfer in Brazil.

But the thing that's
really interesting here is

how she's being whipped around
by the tail on the kite,

but yet it's remaining attached.

What we do know is
that there are types

of knots called binding knots,

that once they are
around something,

if you pull the string,

it doesn't loosen the
knot, it tightens the knot.

So this means that the more
the girl is whipped around

by the tail of the kite, the
more securely she's held

by the tail of the kite.

You can see that
particularly in this frame

where it appears that
the tail going taut

pulls on and tightens the knot.

As the gust of
wind came through,

it actually coiled around her

and that actually would
hold her pretty securely,

almost like a clove
hitch sailor's knot.

Our verdict through
a miracle of physics,

the tail of the
kite likely knotted

so tightly around the toddler

that she remains attached to it

until making it
back to the ground.

Regular viewers will
have caught some

of our previous stories
about strange incidents

involving airplanes like
this alleged near miss.

But I've gotta tell you, this
next video is right up there

with the best of them.

Put your seats in the
upright position and hang on.

It's October, 2021 in
Mossel Bay, South Africa.

A team of 14 stunt skydivers is

flying at altitude
and preparing to jump.

Nine members of the team,
including their videographer,

are coming out onto
the side of the plane

or waiting just inside,

when suddenly their adventure
takes a nose dive, literally.

The plane slips once, twice

and then falls out of the sky

just as the
videographer lets go,

followed by the other
waiting jumpers.

The camera keeps rolling

as the plane sails past
them heading down rapidly

toward the Earth.

Another person
jumps from the plane

as it starts to level off and
disappear into the clouds.

This video is so incredible

that I think we
need another look.

Here's where the plane
flips upside down

and goes into a barrel roll
before beginning to nose dive.

Even stranger, after
the near disaster,

the skydivers proceed
with their planned jump.

It's really incredible

that this plane completely
missed the skydivers

and they seem to go right back

on with their jump,
getting in formation.

They don't seem phased

by the fact they almost
just got hit by a plane.

The pilot also looks like
they're very competent.

The plane isn't
flying at an angle

where it would naturally stall
the instant that it does.

So are we looking at
something that's CGI,

something that has fake
elements to a real video?

In the past,

we've shown you videos
like the 747 near miss

that went viral but
turned out to be fake.

So is this real?

And if so,

how is the pilot able
to recover control

of the aircraft so quickly?

The standard altitude at
which sky divers jump is

10,000 to 13,000 feet,

while the plane moves
at 100 miles per hour.

But by the time this
plane was in free fall

from a height of 16,000 feet,

it was moving much faster
than the skydivers'

terminal velocity of
120 miles per hour.

So is a smooth recovery

under these challenging
conditions actually possible?

Let's consult our experts.

As we watch this
plane travel towards the clouds,

we see kind of a a glowing shape

and the macro blocks begin
to become more compressed.

There's video
compression artifacting

that's making it
look like it's kind

of glitching in and
out of the clouds.

That could be misinterpreted
as manipulation

or misinterpreted as CGI or
something was placed over,

but we didn't detect
any evidence of that.

Although it has been
re-encoded at least twice,

the video is authentic.

It's very difficult to
to fake the trajectory

of nine falling people plus
an airplane that is spinning.

Everything I saw on
the screen I think is

consistent with the
known laws of physics.

So if the
footage is real,

then how and why did
the plane just stall?

Normally in skydiving, people
jump out one at a time,

but since this was synchronized,

they all jumped at the same time

and Kaku thinks that is the key.

When we had nine
sky divers jump out

of the airplane
at the same time,

that created a torque
which caused the back part

of the airplane to swerve.

But Tim McMillan
thinks this happened

because the pilot
slowed the plane down

by cutting power to the left
engine to make it easier

for the sky divers
to get in position.

The pilot has really
brought the plane down

to a slow speed, may very
well have idled the engine,

so it's gliding.

After the final jumper jumped,

when the pilot throttled
the aircraft back up,

one of the engines spooled
up faster than the other,

bringing up the higher angle
of attack on the right wing

and the left is
trying to catch up.

The airflow was hitting
that left wing at an angle

that it was more on top of
the wing forcing it down.

That is why we're gonna start
seeing that corkscrew turn

going towards the left side.

So the nose dive
could have been caused

by a few factors, but
how did the plane manage

to miraculously recover
from this death spiral?

McMillan says, pilots train
for this exact scenario.

The pilot is trying

to regain his aircraft
into what's called

a critical angle of attack,
where the wind hits you,

the wings of the aircraft
that generate lift

and keep it in flight.

And so even though
it's dipping down here,

the pilot at this point is

likely controlling
the yoke forward

to try to get the nose back up

to where the wind that's pushing

over the wings is now
generating lift again

and they're staying in flight.

Our verdict, this is a rare,

but real life aviation
incident likely set off

by too many jumpers
exiting at the same time.

The pilot is flying
with asymmetrical power

and the jumpers are
blocking air flow

to the left
horizontal stabilizer,

which McMillan says
brings up the higher angle

of attack on the right
wing and leads to the spin.

Amazingly, no one was injured

and the plane returned
safely to the runway.

They lead to about 100
deaths in the US each year,

and anyone who gets caught
in one should only hope

that the situation resolves
itself as miraculously

as what you're about to see.

Pueblo, Colorado,

physician Dr. Rocky
Khosla and his family

are on their way to dinner
when they hit a bad rainstorm.

As they seek shelter, they
notice another car is being

submerged by the water rapidly
rising on a low lying road.

Watch what happens next.

And I look, this car
took off

and started floating away
way faster than I expected.

By chance, a
news crew is passing by.

They roll cameras.

Dr. Khosla and others
jump into action

and try to free 35-year-old
Charlene Herrera

from the 10 foot deep torrent.

I just saw a piece
of wood floating

and so I grabbed it

and I just started swimming out.

The car is
nearly submerged.

The situation looks hopeless,

And I was really hammering
away with this piece of wood

and making absolutely
no progress.

Then it happens. Watch.

Another rescuer reaches

into the water and somehow he's
able to grab Charlene's arm.

Next thing I know, this
person is popping out

of there like a champagne cork.

Charlene is pulled to safety.

It's a feel good rescue story.

But here's the amazing thing.

When the car is later
recovered, all of the doors

and windows are
closed and intact.

At this point, I'm still
mystified by the whole thing.

She'd obviously been through
a near death experience,

but she was alive.

You know, it was
just incredible.

We tried to contact
the woman in the car,

but we were never
able to reach her.

So much remains unanswered.

How were the rescuers
able to get ahold of her?

How did she escape when the
windows and the doors were shut?

Could this be a case
of divine intervention

or something else?

Let's check in with our experts.

We always ask, is
the video real?

The crew that filmed this
as a professional film crew.

They're in the business
of news, not fantasy.

So next question,

could a window have been rolled
down then rolled back up?

Most cars today, the
windows aren't manual,

they're powered windows,

and we know that water
and electricity don't mix.

It's gonna short out the
electrical system eventually.

So a person doesn't
have very much time

to lower those windows before
it's impossible to lower them.

Something else to consider,

could a door have been
open then later shut?

Dr. Oluseyi concludes

that would've required
a huge feat of strength.

Physics works against
allowing them to escape.

The car feels a force pushing
in on it on all sides.

So a person inside the car,
when they try to open that door,

they're working against
incredible force

and there is no
person strong enough

to open such a car door.

Oluseyi says,

if you wait for the
pressure to equalize,

the car will be so full of water

that there's no air
left to breathe.

So we have to consider,
was this a miracle?

All we know is there is
not a clear explanation

naturally speaking of how

that person was saved
from the vehicle.

Was one of the rescuers an angel

or some other divine presence
that opened that door

and got the person out
in an inexplicable way?

So you look at all of the
elements that are in play,

the camera crew stopping
just in time to capture

that footage as well as a
physician being on site.

And you have to ask
yourself, is there

something else at work here?

It was meant, it seems,
for other people to witness

that miracles occur and
maybe happen every day.

There's a gap of time between
the driver being rescued

and the car being pulled out.

So there's a small
chance an open window

or door could have closed
somehow during that time.

But I'm going with
our physicist.

That's highly unlikely
because of the water pressure.

So until we get more info, our
verdict is possible miracle.

When was the last
time you almost died?

Did the experience leave you

with a renewed belief
in divine intervention

or a kind of
protective sixth sense?

If not, perhaps this video will.

And a warning, it could be
disturbing to some viewers.

It's spring 2022

in one of the largest
suburbs of Buenos days.

Gonzalez Catan, Argentina.

Passengers are waiting
to board the local metro

when suddenly disaster strikes.

As the security camera rolls,

we see a blue metro train
arriving at a station

with numerous passengers on
the platform waiting to board.

Then a woman in white
stumbles towards the platform

and then fully collapses
directly in between

two train cars.

Now, we wouldn't show you this

if it didn't have a happy
ending, but take another look.

She falls face forward
through the narrow gap

and onto the tracks below,

her fall timed perfectly
with the passing of the gap.

The onlookers are shocked

and cover their faces in dismay,

but soon emergency
responders arrive

and are able to pull the
woman out safe and sound.

I think there was a
higher power at work here

that may have intervened

and helped the situation along

to end up the way that it did.

Could this
be video evidence

of divine intervention?

While the number of
total claims is unknown,

the Vatican has confirmed
roughly 1500 miracles

since the 1500's.

Hollis says this video should
make you a believer too.

There's this wonderful idea

that we have guardian angels
which are divine beings

from God that make sure that
we don't leave this Earth

before our time.

I really think that her
guardian angels spared her.

Hollis also
considers if this may be proof

that humans have a
biological sixth sense

to protect themselves.

It had to be so
precise and so perfect.

Had she not gone limp,

had she not collapsed
the way that she did,

there's no way she would've
come out unscathed.

She might not have made it.

We've been taught that
humans have five senses,

touch, taste, smell,
sight and hearing.

But there is another semi
sense, proprioception,

which helps us track where
our bodies are in space.

Could this additional sense be
what saved this woman's life?

Let's see what
our experts think.

Based on the physical
aspects of the scene,

the woman is definitely
in the video.

There is multiple subjects
that she travels past,

position of shadow
and light information

that would've been difficult

to fabricate with a lower
quality video like this.

So if
the video is real,

could this be
evidence of a miracle?

When we look at the
definition of miracles,

we look at things that
are rare and unexplained,

but more importantly, the things

that are worked for the good.

In this case, this woman's life
is spared in a dramatic way.

This has clearly
worked for the good

and the mere fact that she
had such a rare occurrence,

we have to say that this
might qualify as a miracle.

So it's possible we're
witnessing a true miracle.

But is there any evidence
angels could have been involved?

The concept of guardian angels

or angels in general is
pervasive across many religions,

whether that's Christianity,
Judaism, Islam.

Do we have this idea of
angels walking amongst us?

Two very recent
popes have spoken

about guardian
angels in existence,

but here there's no
proof, that in fact,

an angel is present.

We can only go by
the chances of death

of somebody tumbling
into a train.

Perhaps there's an angel
here, but we may never know.

Dr. Michio Kaku says

the body itself is the miracle,

specifically, that
power of proprioception.

Proprioception is the ability

to unconsciously
manipulate the human body

in three dimensions in
order to avoid danger

or to perform certain
miraculous tasks.

So it's not a guardian angel,
it's not a fairy godmother,

your body instinctively
takes over

and unconsciously understands

where your arms and legs are

and guides your motion
in three dimensions.

So while this woman's
sixth sense may have guided her,

Kaku can't rule out she
may just be very lucky.

Is it possible
to quantify luck?

And the answer is yes.

In fact, we physicists
do this all the time.

You look at all
possible outcomes

and you calculate
the probability

of each outcome taking place

and that allows you to
mathematically calculate

the probability that
certain unlikely

miraculous events will happen.

Our verdict, we're
gonna call this

an unofficial possible miracle.

Sure, we could just chalk
the perfectly timed fall

up to one in the million
luck, or proprioception,

but for the woman to come
away essentially unharmed,

you can have your own opinion,

but I'm thinking a higher
power may be involved.

For centuries, there
have been stories

of long, lost cities
in the Amazon jungle.

Now, as you're about
to see, a video

of one mysterious man
raises a startling question.

Could these legends
actually be true?

Check it out.

2018, Rondonia, Brazil,
deep in the Amazon jungle.

Researchers from FUNAI,

the Brazilian National
Indian Foundation,

are scouting when they come

across this stunning scene.

A lone indigenous man, naked
except for a loin cloth,

swings an ax and
chops into a tree.

Who is this man and why is he
out in the middle of nowhere?

Researchers have
been tracking this man

for quite some time

and discovered several
huts that he's built,

and in the middle of his huts,

he digs a very
deep six foot hole.

The man
lives as a hermit

and those holes are as
much of a mystery as he is.

But when researchers have
tried to contact the man,

he's either fled or
shot arrows at them.

He clearly seems to be
thriving well in the conditions

that he's living in and
is definitely nervous

when it comes to outsiders
entering his area.

Researchers believe

the man has been
the sole inhabitant

of this territory for
at least 26 years,

but they still have no idea
what language he speaks,

his name, or what
tribe he came from.

Well, we know that there
are a lot of uncontacted tribes

that still exist
in the world today

where no one is
allowed to go near it.

The reason being, every
time any research team's

gotten too close,

the people have acted
quite aggressively

in trying to scare them away.

So an
uncontacted tribe, yes,

but one solitary man?

That's unheard of.

And any information
on his origins,

an intriguing
possibility arises.

Could he be the last
surviving member

of a lost civilization

long rumored to lie
hidden in the Amazon?

So the first expedition down

into the Amazon area
happened around the 1500's.

In the 16th century,

Spanish Conquistadors ventured
into the Amazon rainforest

seeking a fabled
lost city of gold.

Some refer to it as El Dorado,
other times the city of Z.

By the 19th century, most
people dismissed the existence

of a lost city as a myth,

deeming the Amazon
too inhospitable

to support large
scale populations.

But that didn't stop
this man from looking.

British Explorer, Percy Fawcett,

would conduct eight
expeditions to find Z.

He departed for his
final voyage in 1925

and he and his two companions
were never heard from again.

The questions, did Fawcett

actually find the city of Z?

Did its citizens kill him?

And is our solitary man

in the hold their sole
surviving descendant?

There's a lot to unpack here.

To solve the riddle, we're going

to need our experts
to do some digging.

The lone man's hut and
garden are more modest

than the city's of
conquistador's legend,

but he fits the
physical description

of ancient indigenous tribes
and he grows the same yucca

and pawpaw plants, and
hunts monkeys, wild pigs,

and birds in the same fashion.

He's barely clothed,

like most of the
cultures in the Amazon.

He's got the right haircut.

This man obviously
grew up in the Amazon

and he knows how
to survive there.

Could he
have some connection

to the people mentioned
in the legends?

So we know that once
societies collapse,

the people that were
living there just disperse

back into the environment
that they've always lived in.

So it's possible that
the man in the hole is

directly related to
the people that lived

in these great cities.

Why is he alone?

Banhart says the likely solution

to that mystery is a tragedy

that's befallen many
uncontacted tribes.

Unfortunately, a
lot of them fall prey

to loggers, or
miners, or hunters,

and without anybody
ever realizing it,

folks from the
western world come in

and they eradicate these tribes.

That's also the most
likely reason for those holes.

Brazilian officials
think it's likely

our man's tribe was wiped
out by attacks and poisonings

instigated by
encroaching ranchers.

The holes are defenses
against further attacks.

This poor individual
is probably the last

member of his tribe.

No one knows how to talk to him

and has no reason to
think that the people

that are contacting him
aren't trying to kill him.

On August 23rd, 2022,

his dead body was
found in a hammock

outside his straw hut.

He is believed to have
passed from natural causes.

The good news is that
he didn't die violently

as he logically feared.

The bad news is that
his language, culture,

and religion all died with him.

He's a tragic of exactly
what's going to happen

to all these wonderful cultures,

unless we spend more
time protecting them.

So sadly, much
remains unanswered.

Our verdict is that
the mystery man was

likely the last of his tribe,

but we don't know whether

or not his people
were connected to Z

or any other lost city.

We do know, that
against all odds,

he thrived in the jungle alone

and hunted for over a
quarter of a century.

He truly was a living legend.

May he rest in peace.

Eating honey, olive
oil rubdowns,

a good cigar every week.

It seems like every
elderly person

has their own secret
for extending our lives.

But one man in Thailand may
have actually cracked the code.

Let's take a look.

It's March, 2022 in
western Thailand.

A family is gathered
around the bedside

of a figure that
barely looks alive.

The man is a monk
named Luang Pho Yaiand

and he is very much alive.

Look again, his skeletal
figure and desiccated skin

make it hard to believe this
video is real, but it is.

Some people who've seen
this video have wondered if this

is the oldest man
who has ever lived,

guessing that his age
is over 150 years old.

For the record,

the oldest documented
person in history

was Jeanne Calment,
who was born in 1875

and died in 1997 at an
amazing 122 years old.

So 150 years old
would be a huge jump,

but scientists say
where a person lives

can have an effect on
how long they live.

Researchers are fascinated
by so-called blue zones,

which are geographical areas

with a larger than
average number of people

who are 100 years old.

By contrast, the
average life expectancy

in the United States
is only 77 years old.

Could the man in this
video be benefiting

from one of these
so-called blue zones?

These blue
zones don't share

many similarities when
it comes to geography.

So their connection to
longevity remains a mystery.

But there's another
possible explanation,

a theory that some people
can mummify themselves.

What this video brings

to mind is the supposed Japanese
practice of sokushinbutsu,

which is the practice
of self mummification.

Self mummification is
meditating so deeply

that you pass away in

that meditative state,
becoming a preserved body.

The practice is believed
to have been observed

by Buddhist monks
who would practice

a form of such
extreme asceticism

that their bodies would
simply mummify themselves.

According to Atlas Obscura,

between 1081 and 1903,

at least 17 monks managed
to mummify themselves.

Is that astonishing ability
what we're seeing here?

The act of self mummification
was criminalized in Japan

during the late 1800's

as it was deemed inhumane
by the government.

So has this man
revived the practice

or is he mastering some other
form of self-preservation?

We asked our experts?

Could this man be
gaining extended life

by residing in
one of the world's

seemingly magical blue zones?

Being in a blue
zone is not a factor

that allows him
to live this long.

This is in Thailand, it's not
in one of the blue zone areas.

So could we be looking
at a real example

of self mummification in action?

Manka is doubtful.

I don't think we're seeing
self mummification here.

You know, his skin has gone
through a lot over time

and his muscles have broken
down and he's just aged.

It appears he has plans
to become cremated

after he passes, so
he's not attempting

to become a sokushinbutsu.

Manka believes
this may be nothing more

than a determined monk

using a trained focused mind
to prolong the inevitable.

Your mind can actually
have a great influence

over your health.

There's studies where
monks have been able

to actually change their
internal core temperature

by several degrees of Fahrenheit

just through meditative states.

I definitely think
that mind over matter

could have helped
him live this long

because he's been able to
keep his stress so low,

likely because of meditating.

Ed Hope thinks
Luang's appearance

and his advanced age, whatever
it is, have to do with

how much he eats.

Luang probably has
a very modest diet

and he probably avoids
some of those other things

that might speed aging up,

such as smoking and
drinking alcohol.

Research backs up the hypothesis

that calorie restriction
slows down the aging process,

but it can't prevent
inevitable muscle breakdown

known as sarcopenia.

So sarco means muscle and
penia means a reduction of,

so we're seeing a
reduction of muscle mass.

The cells he produces
now aren't as good

as the cells he's
produced before,

and that's why he's got
this very frail appearance.

However, Hope says
another factor might play

an even bigger role here.

A human can only live so long

and that's really
gonna be defined

by your personal genetics.

He's certainly benefiting
from good genetics as well.

Not everyone, even if you
live a very healthy life,

will live as long as Luang here.

The woman that's lived the
longest, Jeanne Calment,

a French woman who
lived to the age of 122,

actually must have benefited
from very good genetics

because she was smoking
all the way up to age 117.

And as far as Luang
being the oldest living Man

at 150 years old,
we dug into it.

Ends up, that's just a rumor

that caught fire
on the internet.

Sadly, Luang passed
away due to advanced age

at the age of 107.

Our verdict, we agree
that what we are seeing is

a man who extended his lifespan
through disciplined eating

and who benefited
from good genetics.

And while it ends up the
rumors of Luang's life

were greatly exaggerated,

his surprising success
on TikTok has, in a way,

granted him a form of
internet immortality.

We've seen people survive the
impossible moments captured

on camera that defy the odds.

Some can be explained,
others remain a mystery.
