heading this way.

I can't make out who it is.

Maybe he won't see our horses.

But what if he does?

Then this town will be minus

one citizen.

It's Doc Murchison.

MURCHISON: Whoa.

Somebody there?

It's us, Doc.

Oh, the Copelands,

huh?
That's right.

It's Doc.

Somebody's killed him.

Better get the sheriff.

JIM: They broke the mold
when they made Doc Murchison.

I'd known him in Denver,

one of those quiet, kindly men

who could never say no.

He'd ride 20 miles
to deliver a baby

in the dead of night.

Yes, he was a man
who would be missed, all right,

and so would the $10,000

that belonged to Wells Fargo.

That gave me 10,001 reasons

for being in Dry Creek.

The money...

and whoever killed Doc.

Are you the Wells Fargo man?
JIM: That's right.

Sheriff Clements
will be along most any minute.

He asked me to tell you.
Hold on there a minute.

Hey, you're gonna run yourself
right on the ground, boy.

Well, I got to,

trying to make stake.

Maybe pick up a piece
of land for farming.

You're kind of rushing things
a little, aren't you?

Time's money, Pa used to say.

Since you're so interested
in running errands,

maybe I can throw
a little business your way.

Ed Franklin, liveryman,

heard the shot, got up, ran out,

but too late to see anything.

Did you form a posse?

Yeah, just soon as I could,

but they had a good start on us.

You've seen this country.
A man can disappear in no time.

I think if you had
split your men,

you might have
picked up the trail.

I suppose there were
a lot of things

I should've done, but I didn't.

Dry Creek's a small town.

We're not used
to anything more violent

than a Saturday night fight.

Nah, it was a brutal,
senseless murder,

a fine man like Doc.

I guess I'm getting old.

But there's one thing for sure.

What's that?

Whoever killed Doc's
gonna have to get a lot older

before they can spend
any of that money.

What do you mean?

The bills were in too large
denominations for them

to spend without
attracting attention.

Yeah. They'd have
to wait a while

until things simmer down.

Well, but hang it all, man,
they could be clean

out of the territory by now.

Or right here in town.

Not one that them I could think
of would do a thing like that.

It had to be somebody that knew

somebody that knew Doc.

If Doc surprised them
pulling a hold-up,

anybody would shoot him
to keep him from yelling out.

Wells Fargo investigator.

the closest thing

to a witness we have.

Yeah, I wish

in the metal line, thereabouts.

Well, take the shoe

I don't ordinarily

You shoe all the horses

I'm the only blacksmith around.

Well, it takes four of them
to shoe a horse, Jim.

Do you ever hear
the old expression,

that for want of a shoe,
the horse was lost?

Well, I'm going to go
find a horse.

JIM: I picked up the trail
that the posse had taken

and followed it for a while.

Out of eight men in that posse,

every one of them rode horses

that had been shod
by Ed Franklin.

I found the place
where they gave up.

The prints told me
that six of them

rode back to town.

Two others kept right on going.

On a hunch,
I decided to follow them.

You better hurry
with that water, Billy,

if you want biscuits for supper.

You could camp
a little closer to the wash.

It's Mr. Hardie, sis.

The one I was telling you about.

Oh, I'm sorry you catch me

looking this way,
Mr. Hardie.

My name is Jim, Sharon.

She ain't really bad looking

when her face is clean.

SHARON: Oh, no.
You stop that, Billy.

He's forever trying
to marry me off.

Last time, it was Jed Copeland.

He was willing and he owns
half the Copeland ranch.

The boy's land hungry.

Comes by it honestly, though.

squatter's rights here,

and as soon
as I can earn the money,

the night Doc Murchison

to join the posse.

And who are the Copelands?

They've got a place

about three miles away,
over the ridge.

Jed's the one
Sharon won't marry.

Maybe I'd better ride by
and have a talk with them.

Meanwhile, don't you go
marrying anybody else.

I might change my mind.

Now you're beginning
to separate the wheat

from the chaff, Billy.

I'm gonna get a drink

Working our fool heads off

We could go on down to Mexico

along the trail.

ever since ol' Doc was killed.

He was mighty fond of him.

JIM: I made the rounds
with that shoe,

hoping that I could get
someone to make a move.

Sell them on the idea
that I knew

something they didn't.

Talk travels fast
in a small community.

A pebble of a rumor can start
an avalanche of gossip.

If my hunch was right,

and the killer was a local man,

he might panic.

Oh, Billy,

I want you to pass out
some handbills for me.

There's a dollar in it for you.

all over town
wherever there's room.

Livery stable,
boarding house, saloon,

everywhere.

A thousand dollars?

A man could do a lot
with that kind of money.

this is a lot of foolishness.

leading to the arrest.

What information?
We've already talked

to half the people
of the territory.

It's just possible
that somewhere in the half

that we haven't talked
to there's somebody

who knows something.

If there was anybody
around here who knew

who killed Doc Murchison,

they'd fight amongst themselves

to supply the hanging rope.

Not if he were afraid,
he wouldn't.

Fear will sometimes
keep a man's mouth shut.

Greed might open it.

You better run on, Bill.

I've had a lot
of complaints about you today.

Well...

folks are afraid
that you are trying

to throw the blame

for Doc's murder onto them.

How's that?

Well, that horseshoe
business of yours.

You got people
looking at each other

out of the corner of their eyes.

Folks who've been
neighbors for years.

Then I'd say we were
beginning to get results.

You wouldn't be trying
to clean house,

would you, Jim?

Catching anybody

and close the case?

very well, do you, Tom?

Or you wouldn't
even have thought that.

I just wanted

Maybe I am trying

or maybe their horses.

TOM: Did you recognize
the horses?

I'm not sure.

You saw them
but you didn't see them.

One of the horses was blotted,

maybe part Morgan.

Not thoroughbred,

more like a quarter horse.

There shouldn't be
too many quarter horses

in this part of the country,
should there?

There aren't many.

than anywhere else.

Do you remember what happened
to Doc Murchison?

But who would wanna harm a boy?

Anybody that thought
his testimony

might hang 'em.

Saturday night in Dry Creek

brought the usual
crowd of cowhands in

from outlying spreads.

Not many of them would be
apt to own a quarter horse.

Well, fellas?

Fill 'em up for everybody, Bob,

this is our night to howl.

All right, Bob.

Big round of whiskey.

Over here, Bob.

Where did you get a $50 bill?

It comes under the heading
of my business.

Well, I'm making it mine.
You two come along.

You're asking for a lot
of trouble, mister.

TOM: Do like he says, Jake.
He's a Wells Fargo man.

What's that got to do with me?
We've got somebody

we want to look you over.

We got a witness

who saw the man that killed Doc.

In that case, we'll go along.

We'll come right back.

Now, wait a minute, Frank.

I didn't bargain for no killing

when you got me into this.

Sooner or later,
they'll parade every man

in this town
in front of that witness.

When he points
his finger at you,

it'll be too late
to do anything.

It's him or us.

how we can get to him.

JIM: Think hard, son.

This is a hanging offense.

No. No, it wasn't them.

that night.

just who we've got in here.

Now, I've got a hunch
that whoever's guilty

is gonna try to find out.

Oh, they wouldn't be
foolish enough

to rush to jail, it would be

a dead give away.

Hmm, that's right.

So we're gonna make it
easy for 'em.

We're gonna ask
for volunteers to guard

the jail from the outside.

Oh, no, no, no.

I couldn't take the chance.

The boy's life
would be at stake.

The boy's not even
gonna be in here.

Nobody knows who our witness is

except those two men
that just walked out of here.

We'll have to trust them
to keep their mouths shut.

As for the rest of the town,
all they know

is we've got a witness.

Billy, take that tray
over the saloon.

If anybody asks you
who we've got in here,

tell them you don't know,
that he's a stranger.

You never saw him before.

I'll pick some volunteer guards.

Who's gonna stay in here?

But first, I'll go out
through the front door

and ride down through
the middle of the street

to be sure everybody sees me.

Then I'll come back
through the rear door.

Well, I hope it works.

the fellas that killed Doc

if he saw them.

to guard the jail,

will be happy to oblige.

you take the first shift.

will relieve you at midnight.

Now, this is the key
to both doors,

front and back.

Nobody is to get in
there except me.

Well, I guess we might

Looks like it's gonna be
a long night.

awful chancy, Frank.

When the townspeople
hear the shots,

they'll come running.
You just tell them

I came out front to get a smoke.

When we went back,
the door was open

and our witness was dead.

a man begins to imagine things.

my eyes at shadows.

Whoever did it
must have been waiting.

forward to killing a man.

stretching a point

when I recommended
that Billy Burns

get the reward money,

but I don't think so.

He did give information
that led the Copelands

to the end of the line,

the long, gray line,

in the territory of prison.
