In Bermuda today, officers in
pursuit of a runaway driver...

We've got a bike failing to stop,
heading towards town.

..a rush hour collision...

- Did you stop your car right away
when it happened?
- Yeah.

- ..and a foot patrol...
- OK, so here
we go.

- ..that's no walk in the park.
- OK. It is an arrestable offence.

The island of Bermuda is just 24
miles long,

so policing this close-knit
community...

- Just one picture. Just one picture.
- ..often takes a unique approach.

- You guys were phenomenal. I want to
give you a hand shake.
- No worries.

Despite the influx of thousands
of tourists every year,

for the locals, it's still a place
where everyone knows everyone.

- Hello, how are you? Hi.
- Hello.
How are you?

Police Constable Raeshun Robinson,
also known as Robbie...

- After you.
- ..knows all too well how
connected people are in Bermuda.

He's out on shift today with Brit
officer Police Constable

Holly Lavigne-Smith, who is
a relative newbie to the island.

PC Robinson knows everyone.

He literally will go to a job,
he will know them -

- so it's really... It's really
helpful.
- Yeah.

And knows them in a good way
not in, like,

he's been part of the criminal
underworld.

- Yeah, I know everybody.
- He knows
them in, like, a good way.

- In a good way. Yeah.
- He is extremely
knowledgeable and professional,

but you also... He also knows how
to have a really good time.

- See?
- He wants to shake your hand.
This is what...
- Shake my hand.

This is what engaging in the
community's all about.

- All right? What's up, mate?
- Never a dull day with him.

- THEY CHUCKLE
- See? And that's somebody I know.

- What did you used to do?
- So, I was
an electrician before this job.

A lot like policing, you know,

you engage with members of the
community on a daily basis.

And also, you get to explore the
island like this as well.

So you know where a lot of places
are, you know what...

..you end up meeting a lot of
people.

Knowing a lot of people within
a community,

it helps when dealing with
situations

because you build that rapport with
them.

I guess it's a feeling of comfort
for them to know that,

you know, they're dealing with
somebody that they recognise.

Officer Holly is a former nurse,

swapping hospital shifts for police
patrols.

And she's taken to the pace of it.

For me, the best thing about being
a police officer is the variety.

Like, it's never the same, so if
you've got a personality

that likes to be on the go,
then it really does suit you.

And also, you get to drive really
fast in a police car!

And it's not long before
the light's on, in pursuit.

PC Robinson and I saw someone
fail to stop at a stop sign,

so we engaged our emergency
equipment.

The man on the moped is
refusing to pull over.

Right, so we've got a person
driving away from us.

Hotel Seven to Oscar Ten Five.

- Officer Holly calls it into base.
- Ten Five.

We've got a bike failing to stop on
Parson's Road, heading... East.

What's the plate?

Suspicious the bike may be stolen,
she runs a number plate check.

Not moving at a particularly
high speed, just failing to stop.

But on these narrow streets...

Happy Valley Road,
heading towards town.

..the rogue rider has the advantage,

and keeping up with the racing
motorbike...

- Just passing...
- Curving Avenue.

Curving Avenue. We're heading north,
Curving Avenue.

..is a challenge for the squad car.

Officer Holly calls in a description
of the driver

to be shared with all units.

Black pants, white T-shirt,
white helmet.

They need to track him down
and fast.

Failing to stop and reckless driving

is putting other road users
in danger.

UPBEAT MUSIC PLAYS

Patrolling the island's 60 miles
of sunny coastline

is all in a day's work for
coastguard Corporal Mel Gauntlett.

I was born and raised here,
and I didn't really appreciate it

until I lived in other places.

I had friends in college take me
to the beach,

I arrived and it was just a muddy
flat in Nova Scotia.

The beaches are world-class. I'm
really proud to call this my home.

Keeping the waters clean and
rubbish-free

is a key part of Corporal Mel's
coastguard duties,

and it's how she sets an example to
her two daughters.

It's really important for me
as a parent

to make sure everybody's safe,

so cleaning up the oceans
is essential.

And every day on the water is
another opportunity

for Corporal Mel to continue her
mission to protect the coastline.

So, when we're on patrol, we pull
things out of the ocean,

just so that it's not hazard to
navigation for most boaters.

Also, it's just generally good to
clean up all the junk

that accumulates along the
shoreline.

At the coastguard's docking station,

this week's haul shows there's no
shortage of surprises.

So, this is our most recent
pile of trash.

This is the top of a oil barrel that
someone has used as a bucket.

We've got some old rope that
may have come off a ship.

A car tyre, because even those
make it into the ocean.

Then our prize possession this
summer is a boat,

and it's just beyond repair. So it
was found floating,

we got it, brought it here, and
eventually it will go to the dump.

And Corporal Mel knows all too
well the dangers of drifting junk.

When she's not on duty, she's out
boating with her family.

If you come across this, you can
barely see it at night-time,

it floats very flat in the water.

It gets waterlogged so it kind of
goes right under the surface,

and if you hit it with the prop of
your boat,

it could damage your boat as well as
possibly sink it

if you're not careful. That's it,
that's my junk pile.

Today, she's on duty with
coastguard Sergeant CJ Richardson.

- Seej, you ready for me?
- Whenever you're ready.

They're doing a routine sweep
for potential floating hazards.

- What do you want on off first?
- Just springs will be fine.
- Yep.

All right. You're free. Four one
alpha rescue one. Good copy.

And it doesn't take long before
Corporal Mel

spots her first case of potential
debris.

Is that... Are they connected to
something,

- or are they just free floating?
- It looks like it.

I mean, they're not moving, we are,

and they should be moving
further away from us.

A pair of seemingly abandoned
lifebuoys.

Moorings have the buoys and then
a length of chain to the weight.

Over time, those chains degrade.

It's a metal in a
salty environment -

they corrode and then eventually
they'll break free.

For the average boater, those can be
very dangerous.

- There are no moorings out here.
- There shouldn't be, no.

Convinced the mooring is on
the loose,

it's vital that Corporal Mel
brings it on board.

I can't see it, so you're going to
have to guide me.

It's at your, like, seven o'clock.

With Sergeant CJ trying to
position the boat...

- Do you want help?
- ..Corporal Mel is
not giving up.

I can come back there and grab it.

If one of us fall overboard, you
know... Oh, it broke. OK, so...

- Yeah, that's...that's broken
free off somewhere.
- Excuse me.

- Well...
- Mel, you are a superhero.
- That is... Yeah.

That shouldn't have been there.

What we've just pulled out of the
water is two buoys

that are essentially toggled
to a heavy weight

at the bottom of the seabed.

So, that one looks like it's
broken free of its weight

and therefore drifted into a very
active boating area.

It becomes a hazard to
navigation at that point.

If you strike that at night-time,

it could get wrapped up
in your prop.

Smaller vessels could hit that and
potentially

damage themselves and sink.

So, we'll try and contact
whoever owns it,

but we may not be able to find
the person,

and in that case, just adds it
to the junk pile.

And with a full day on the water
ahead, the clean-up continues.

MARIMBA MUSIC PLAYS

Officers Holly and Robbie are in
pursuit of a motorcyclist.

- Tell 'em where we are.
- OK.

- He refused to pull over.
- Curving
Avenue, heading to King Street.

They suspect it's because he's on
a stolen vehicle.

- Just passing Church of God.
- They
need to keep him in their sights.

11 Curving Avenue. We've just
passed. We've... Ah!

The rider turns back,
heading down a narrow alley.

- Curving Avenue east.
- No sign of him.
- We've lost him.

He managed to turn quickly
and we lost him.

So, when we called it in to our
operations,

they said that he has possible
warrants, that his bike is expired,

and possibly a plate
on the wrong bike,

- so that's obviously why he was
trying to evade the police.
- Mh-hm.

We're going to patrol now and try
and find him.

If the rider of the stolen bike
thinks he's shaken them,

he can think again.

- He's right there.
- Yep.

Officer Holly radios in his
whereabouts.

Curving Avenue, heading towards
town.

But the elusive rider has the
advantage of Bermuda's narrow roads.

There's another car. Ten four,
we've lost sight of him.

Despite their efforts, he's managed
to make off again.

Unfortunately, he got away
but we had good visuals, so...

..he was in a white helmet,
white T-shirt, black shorts.

- I saw his face.
- Robbie saw his face.

It's so hard to manoeuvre the car
around those tiny roads.

- They know to go up Happy Valley as
well.
- Mm-hm.

And to do those little turns.

Refusing to give up, the officers
continue to hunt.

We're just patrolling the roads
because he's probably hiding

and waiting for it to cool off,
and then he'll pop out.

But at the moment we haven't
got eyes on him, so...

We're just keeping the heat up
a little bit.

When people fail to stop,
it's really frustrating

and that person on the bike,
he doesn't know that,

actually, how much risk he put
everyone in.

He put other members of the public
at risk,

and he ultimately put
himself at risk.

With his local intel,
Officer Robbie has a hunch

where the rider might've gone
to ditch a stolen bike.

So, this area right here behind this
church

is known for persons to dump
motorcycles.

Robbie is really knowledgeable about
the area. He knows where to look.

- Is it unlocked or locked?
- With no
sign of the getaway driver,

they do find two seemingly
abandoned bikes.

Oh, this one's stolen.

- There you go.
- This one's stolen.

Officer Robbie's
instincts were spot-on.

They may have lost
the runaway rider,

but they've gained a stolen bike.

Now the tricky job of
getting it back to the pound.

In the central part of the island,
Police Constable Logan Alexander

and Chante James are at the start
of their 12-hour shift.

So, we're just going to
do some patrols,

make sure everyone's, you know,
following the

road traffic laws
and see what we get into.

Both are recent graduates
from police training school

where they met as fellow rookies.

We do work well together.

It's nice, yeah.

I would describe Logan
as very helpful,

a good person to work with,
he's very friendly as well.

I enjoy working with him always.

With an average of 17 new officers
joining the ranks each year,

Commissioner Darrin Simons
knows what it takes.

The number one thing that
I look for in new recruits

is positive attitude...

You take care.
All the best, yeah?

..because in policing, you're often
dealing with people

that are in conflict,
tension filled moments.

- My apologies, guys.
- That's all right, buddy.

Positive attitude impacts
every interaction you have

with members of the community.

So, for me, that is
the number one thing.

Hey-hey!

Definitely going through the course
together really helped

because we got to know
each other pretty well.

I definitely enjoy working
in the community and, you know,

when you are able to help
with people

and help resolve issues,
it is very rewarding.

So, I think next week, Monday,
will be exactly one year since we

came out onto the road,
which is crazy to think.

- It was a pretty fast year.
- Yeah.

It's been exciting,
it's been enjoyable.

And it's not long before the
first job comes in on the radio.

Hotel five, ten five.

Hotel five, start making your way
to Victoria Street...

They receive a call to attend a road
traffic collision across town.

Ten four.

Obviously we just got a call for
a 1056, which is an accident.

Officers Logan and Chante need to
get there as quickly as possible,

but rush hour is in full swing.

So, we're just heading there
right now so we can

clear some traffic and
sort this out as quick as we can.

But they won't know just
how serious the incident is

until they arrive on the scene.

It looks like it might be
two vehicles involved.

Mmm, we will see what happens
when we get there.

Hello.

The first priority is to
find out whether anyone is injured.

- How are you doing? Are you OK?
- Yeah.

The other driver,
a 90-year-old woman,

has never been
in an accident before.

- You stay in your car for now
if you need to.
- Oh, OK.

But with no-one in need of medical
assistance, Officers Logan

and Chante need to work out
what happened.

So, you was driving
on the main road, yeah? OK.

- Did you stop your car right away
when it happened?
- Yeah.

Just a little fender-bender.

People exit into the main road
and then collide with each other,

but nothing...

No injuries,
which we're thankful for.

The next priority for Officer Logan
is to keep traffic moving.

We're going to try and see
if we can remove the vehicles

as quick as we can out of the road.

Is it possible we can move
the cars to the parking lot here,

- and then we collect everyone's
details?
- Yeah.
- OK.

So, we're just moving the vehicles
now so that the traffic can flow.

Officer Chante gathers information
from the female driver.

- How are you?
- I'm fine.
- You're all good? OK.

- Yeah, I'm fine.
- No injuries, OK.

This is the first accident
I ever had.

- Ever?
- And I'm 90 years old, yeah.

Oh, my goodness.

- He came fast and just...
- Yeah.

With neither party laying blame,

the officers start
the paperwork process.

Our job as police is not to
determine that, but what

we'll do is we'll gather everyone's
information, your insurance

information, we'll provide you
with an accident form as well too.

I felt for her being that
she was an elderly lady,

and she said that she's
never been in an accident.

- OK, so there's some front...
- Yeah.

..damage to your bumper.
OK.

So, I was totally surprised
when I got this big bang.

Yeah.

In any minor car RTCs,
we always refer it to insurance,

so they can determine
who was at fault.

It was more like a civil matter.

Aside from the dents to the cars...

- Yeah, the back door.
- Yeah.

..both drivers had a lucky escape.

It's not great to
have your car damaged,

- but at least you're not hurt.
- That's right.
- Yeah.

It was quite sad that,
I mean, all these years,

she's never been
in an accident.

Good for her, honestly,
but the other gentlemen was pretty

good in understanding
what had happened, so...

- Be safe out there, OK?
- Yeah.

- Enjoy the rest of your day.
- Thank you.

Officers Holly and Robbie have
discovered a stolen motorbike.

I've run a check on Charlie Zulu,
it's come back as stolen.

But transporting the bike
back to the pound is something

Holly's not so sure about.

- They're going to make me
drive the truck.
- Oh!

- Can you drive the truck?
- No. Thank God.

I really don't want to do it.

A couple of weeks ago I passed
the kilo heavy goods vehicle

truck training, so I now have
a licence, so it means that they

might ask me to go and collect
the kilo truck to collect the bike.

Robbie didn't do the training cos
he knows he doesn't want do it...

..like, drive it,
which was really sensible.

I hate driving it.

It's, like, left-hand drive,
and it's huge,

and these roads...

This is a very small road,

so, to be honest, I think
I will refuse if I'm allowed,

but if Hotel One give me the
directive, I have to do it, so...

I haven't actually done it yet
since my training,

so it's horrible!

The call comes in.

The kilo truck is on its way.

They are? Oh.

Luckily for Officer Hollie,
she's off the hook.

The road traffic unit is going to
drive the truck, so I don't have to.

And manoeuvring it up
the narrow alley,

it couldn't be in safer hands.

This is my driving instructor.

Hey, your eyes look
really blue today.

- This is Mr Ming.
- Hey.

He taught me to drive.

Well, he tried to.

The first thing I thought was that
I was going to have to drive

the kilo truck,
and so I was basically panicking,

and I'm trying to avoid that.

But don't tell anyone that.

The rider they were chasing
may have got away with it this time,

but Holly's learnt that sometimes
policing is about playing

the long game.

It is really frustrating,
he essentially got away.

Even though, yes,
we didn't get him then,

it doesn't mean that we never will,
and that's what policing is.

Coastguard Mel is
enjoying a day off...

Morning, everybody.

- ..with daughters Holly and Sophie.

Before we get to the dive site,

we'll talk about the dive site
in detail.

And with their dad Chris
captaining the dive boat,

the outing is a family affair.

Today we're going out on the boat
with their dad.

We're going to do some diving
and snorkelling

and just enjoy a beautiful day.

I get to actually enjoy being
on the water instead of constantly

having to police.

I get to put my face under the water

and look at pretty fish for a couple
of hours and just turn my brain off.

I always seem to find
myself by the sea.

The ocean is all around us

and as a Bermudian, it's just
a natural part of life here.

It's really important for me
to share that with my kids.

It's not just her love of the sea
Corporal Mel hopes to pass on.

As one of the few female
Coastguards on the island,

she also wants to inspire
her daughters.

As a parent of two girls,
it's really important for me

to show them a strong female
figure in their life.

I need them to see that they can do
anything they set their mind to,

and if it means that they join
the police force,

or they choose to be a stay at home
parent, I'm behind them 100%.

As long as they're happy, I'm happy.

And Corporal Mel's
passion for conservation

means her work never stops.

I'm off today and still, somehow,
we manage to find trash to pick up.

it's quite the view.

got to have ocean related jokes.

Officers Holly and Robbie
have left the comfort

of their air conditioned
squad car...

This is the hot
and sweaty part of our day.

..to carry out a foot patrol around
one of the city's main green spaces.

We do patrols
around busy park areas

and popular public places
to go in Bermuda.

It's really important,
just to show that visibility

and that community policing,

and we get a lot of information
doing those walk throughs.

- Good day. How are you?
- Wonderful. Good day, sir.

- Are you OK?
- How you doing?

We can sight people
who we're looking for,

we can engage with the community,
they can ask us questions.

If they have any issues, they
often give us information on crime.

Good, good.

Being present and
people seeing us about,

it hopefully will deter crime.

But again, it's, like, you're
talking to the community, engaging.

We want them to like us.

We want them to be able to come
to us if they need our help.

It's a really positive thing to do.

It can become quite heated
quite quickly

if we come across people
who aren't behaving.

The officers are on the lookout
for anyone acting suspiciously

or breaking the law.

OK, so, here we go.

It's not long before they spot
some potential issues.

- Hi, how are you?
- Good day, gentlemen.

All right, the reason why
we're engaging you guys today

is because you have open containers
of alcohol there, all right?

You know it's an offence
to drink in public, correct?

- Keep it closed.
Yep, just put it away.
- All right.

Despite their requests,

the man appears unwilling to dispose
of the contents of his bottle.

All right,
it is an arrestable offence.

If they don't, for example,
throw away the alcohol when asked,

then it can escalate into something
more serious

where we can arrest them for that.

You need to empty
that bottle of alcohol.

You have to do it.

You need to discard of it.
All right?

But the man's method of disposing
isn't quite what the officers

were expecting...

No, not in the fish,
you'll kill the fish.

..pouring it into the koi carp
fish pond.

I'm going to ask you to discard
of that open container of alcohol.

Can you discard of that
in the trash can for me now?

The man's friend steps in
to aid the officers.

- Thank you, sir.
- Thank you.

Thank you, you're a good friend.

All right, listen, listen.

You're not going to open yours,

Just please don't continue
to drink in public, all right?

I don't want to have to throw it

When that man threw
his beer into the pond,

both Robbie and I
were extremely shocked.

I take my son there to
look at those fish all the time

and it's not just a pond to us,
that is quite a big deal.

He had done what we'd said,
but he was being extremely cheeky.

As the shift comes to an end,
one rider has been lost,

a stolen bike has been found,

and the park's koi carp have had
their first taste of Bermudian beer.

I had to keep my composure
a little bit.

I did have a little giggle,
I'm not going to lie.

Those fish are famous
in Bermuda, like,

people come to see those fish,
so, you know...

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

- ..I just didn't expect him
to do that.
- Mm-hm.

- But we dealt with it
professionally so...
- Yeah.

..job done.

Next time, the island is
gearing up for carnival...

- It's like I want to dance now.
- I know.

..a thief to find...

But the intent was to take it.

..and a drugs arrest.
