When I watch cult documentaries, I get
jealous that they're episode two.

They show people, oh, we were all coming
together. We're all in this commune and

we're doing yoga together.

We never had that. We never had the
episode two. It's not like the children

God cult. This is not wild, wild
country.

It's this isolating thing where there's
no compound for the cult. There's no

community to it.

It's people so spread out. Everything
revolves around Michael.

And we can't get out.

You will never be out.

One of the most heartbreaking tragedies
we have ever heard.

Neighbors are understandably stunned.

This bomb's actions are a calculated act
of evil.

These events are beyond our ability to
understand.

Number one question.

Why? Why?

Why?

I honestly don't know what precipitated
Andrea's breakdown.

She never said anything about what she
was struggling with.

But, of course, having kids is
stressful.

Living in a small space can be extra
stress.

But I never really realized that,
coupled with her exposure to the

could be troubling.

In 1999, a few months after Luke was
born, Andrea had another incident.

We were still at Andrea's mother's
house, and Andrea had walked off.

I'm like, where's Andrea?

I opened the bathroom door, and there
she is standing looking at herself

in the mirror.

With the knife up to her neck.

We have the sacrifice, but where is the
offering?

I said, hey, give me the knife.

Faith takes you to that extent.

She just stood there, catatonic.

Faith takes you to that point where you
lift the knife.

She didn't actually harm herself, but
she was hospitalized

at that point.

The doctors told me Andrea had
postpartum depression.

They explained the seriousness of the
illness, that women who have postpartum

depression can develop postpartum
psychosis.

But I didn't know what psychosis looked
like, what it meant.

It would have helped a lot to know that,
hey, just if you see a person, a loved

one, during that postpartum period, they
may not be thinking.

The way they always think, and in fact,
if they are believing things to be true

that aren't, it may be very dangerous.

The doctors gave her some combination of
medicines that brought her from off

-road back to her normal way of
thinking.

And they said, well, you know, I
wouldn't recommend having more children.

One of your own seeds shall be your
inheritance.

You must give birth to life.

We asked, hey, what's the risk?

They're like, well, there's 50 -50
chance that if she has another child,

relapse and she'll exhibit the same
symptoms and require the same treatment.

It'd be fair to say, okay, well, there
was a risk to her.

She did get sick again.

She could try to harm herself again.

But I didn't even think that at the
time.

I just thought, okay, she'll get sick.
Worst case, it'll be like a flu. She'll

get treated with the same medicines that
were for her before, and we'll be done.

That's simple enough, right?

Throughout my childhood, Michael had
strongly encouraged us to live in a bus

like his family.

But this boy, my...

We're barely paying the bills at a
campground, which is $40 a week. That's

almost no money. So my mom gets a job as
an activities director.

And that's the first time we were
actually around human beings that were

Michael's kids.

My oldest sister is about 12 years old.

Then she meets this girl, Megan.

Heard Megan hit it off like two 12 -year
-olds would.

We're back in the bus, and you know
what?

Megan, I really like Megan. That was
really fun.

And the pH level in the room changes.

My mom overhears this, saying that she
liked another girl.

Having a friend outside, meaning you're
letting Satan inside your heart. You

have a connection with a girl that's not
in Michael's teachings, that's not the

chosen one.

So then she was in probably the most
amount of trouble I've ever seen.

And the word trouble is pain. She was
beaten for an entire day.

That is something that Michael would...

Approve of. Not only approve of, he
would encourage.

Stank him hard, so it hurts.

The Bible says, runes scour away evil.

All because she said that she liked
another girl.

She liked a friend.

You know, I don't think there's much
more of a more beautiful thing in

that God has given as a beautiful
reflection of what it means to be born

than the butterfly and the cocoon.

So in this pamphlet, Bringing the Inside
Out, Michael talked about

the butterfly and the cocoon.

God put the metamorphosis of a worm and
a butterfly into creation as a most

glorious witness to the work of
transformation.

What that means in Michael's terms is
that you need to become a butterfly.

Butterfly is you being saved.

These worms are crawling on each other,
trying to get to the top. And finally,

this worm just splits on his own.

And you know what? He starts to spin a
cocoon.

And to really get to know God, who's
going to make you a butterfly, you have

go into a cocoon.

So you enter this phase of isolation.

A lot of time in that cocoon.

Scary experience of changing.

A lot of struggle. A lot of suffering.

He has purposely designed this system
where you are cut off from the rest of

world. All of your personal
relationships.

Everything that human beings...

were meant to do here.

Connection, love, death, all of that is
now revolving around Michael

himself. It's going to be a life of
solitude, rejection, persecution,

isolation, loneliness, and struggle.

No one ever became a butterfly.

When I graduated college, I was offered
a job at General Mills, and I was

excited, you know, because General Mills
was a Fortune 500 company.

That was my first sale with General
Mills, and they got monster after that,

know. I was good at what I did. You
know, I have a gregarious personality.

People do like me, and so I did really
well.

On one hand, I had a company car and a
salary and a bonus.

But on the other side, I'm feeling
guilty, you know, because I've absorbed

enough of Michael's teachings that I
know a job is wrong. I know a job is

cooperating with saints.

But I have to work.

I have to earn an income.

When all your life is consumed with
working, there's more to life than the

network.

I'm not there. I'm not getting Mike's
approval. I'm conflicted. And so for the

next two years, I embrace getting the
tape.

I was in that learning phase, you know,
and I was developing spiritually,

understanding more of his teaching,
understanding more of the path I need to

by.

I wanted to learn more.

And then I received a handwritten note
from his wife, Rachel.

What I found peculiar, though, was the
closing in her note. She ended with, in

Jesus, Michael's servant, Rachel.

I did not understand why she's labeling
herself that way, a servant.

But after reading the track, The Witch
and the Wimp, I understood.

In The Witch and the Wimp, Michael says
that all women, as a result of Eve's

disobedience to God, inherit a
witchcraft nature.

All you got to do is look at your mom,
look at your sister, look at your

neighbor, look around, the women.

This witchcraft nature seeks to control
and dominate men.

And if you are going to be a real man of
God, you're not going to tolerate.

being ruled by a contentious woman, a
witch.

You don't need a cauldron. You don't
need a broomstick. You know, all you

is that little contentious heart.

In that track, Mike revealed the true
nature of women.

That explains the way Rachel closed her
letter.

She's Michael's servant, not his wife.

After that, I began to see men oppressed
by their contentious wives.

Every time I turned on the television, I
would see shows like Married with

Children or Roseanne, the controlling
woman and the passive man who let the

woman call the shots. I was seeing
witches and wimps everywhere.

I really believed I was seeing that.

It was a very powerful paradigm shift on
how you view the relationship of a man

and woman.

I have this thing, pin that I wear that
says, I love to submit to my husband.

Yeah, Elizabeth was talking about that
on the table. Those guys from Texas A &M

saw my wife has a button. I love to
submit to my husband. And then it has

the verses, you know, throughout. It's
like she's got a weird thing on, a

stinky, smelly.

I love to wear that button because that
is my

place of security.

When I try to get out of that place or I
walk or the contention of my nature,

the iniquity rises up.

It's like I'm out of nowhere. You can't
be there and have that relationship.

It's not like we're trying to depict a
walk in the garden kind of relationship.

It's a constant.

Because of that, I have to constantly
confront my wife with her nature.

Constantly. Because it's wicked. It's so
deep.

Wow.

Teaching -wise, it seems consistent with
what they've said in their tracks.

The submissive role of the wife.

The man, like, the head of the
mayor's... I don't agree with that now

all, but at the time, I think I would
have agreed with it.

I know we had that kind of in our
family. You know, we had a more

family, and Andrea looked to me to make
significant decisions, and I mistakenly

would assume that if it's bad for her,
she'll speak up, but looking back, I

don't think that's true.

After the knife incident, Andrea was
released from the hospital, and I

let's try to get a more comfortable home
environment. So we found a house close

to my job at NASA.

Not real big, but just right for us,
especially coming out of an RV.

For some number of months after that,
she started doing a lot better.

Andrea went from being catatonic to up
and about, communicative.

Really gave me a lot of hope because I
thought, oh, this can work out.

Stimulants can drive millions of people
into mental wards, into drugs, into all

kinds of false hype and stimulus.

And then by the end of 99, Andrea didn't
want to take any more meds. She's like,

I don't want to take any more of
anything. So she stopped.

At the time, going in even to our
marriage, we said, well, we're going to

however many children that come along,
right? And right or wrong, that's what

decided. There's the baby. There's the
baby in there.

It was within a year.

The new mother.

Hello.

We got pregnant with Mary.

The risk of having another child was the
flu.

that, you know, that was a risk worth
taking.

When I got a promotion to have

New Mexico as my wholesale territory, I
moved to Albuquerque.

That's where I met a really kind and
caring girl.

That was our first date.

I'm not a bad date, you know. I'm full
of devil, but I do a good first date.

She was working on a master's degree at
the University of New Mexico, and we

quickly became close friends.

About a year later, we became engaged.

I slowly introduced her to Mike by
having her listen to some of the tapes.

If you're a woman of God, you will, out
of compassion and love for your husband,

learn to submit.

Her present issue was that, David, this
guy sounds kind of weird.

Your mind is occupied with your
wickedness.

The truth is you don't know how bad you
are.

I think she even used the word creepy.

Then one day Mike called me on the
phone, and he said we were going to

and it's very costly to go there, and so
this is how you can wire money to help

them with their trip.

And so I did.

In about a 10 -year time period, I
probably gave Mike and his family a

under $20 ,000.

During our phone conversation, he asked
what the latest would be, and I just

told him that I was engaged.

And he said, David, you know that's not
a wise idea.

And I said, yeah, you know, I'm sorry.

In the heart of every single woman is
the powerful thwart of Satan to demean,

oppress, to attack the men of God, to
nullify God's word.

Mike teaches that until a man has direct
revelation for God, it's not good that

he become married because the
contentious woman will be a distraction.

All I can do is warn you.

The next day or two days after, I called
Diane and I downplayed it. I told her

that in my spiritual development, it's
just not a good time for me to be

thinking of marriage or even to be
engaged.

I'm sorry, but we're just going to have
to call this off.

After I called off the engagement, I was
too numb to feel a thing.

But afterwards, I cried.

She was a wonderful girl, and she loved
me.

She really did.

My dad, Mark, when he was out street
preaching, he would get in trouble with

Michael because he wouldn't street
preach loud enough.

Michael said that he was beyond saving.
He was a wimp of a man.

It made for a contentious situation
because my dad is naturally submissive

not the alpha in a group.

Michael completely shifted the power
dynamics in my family.

And my mom and dad stopped talking at
this point.

It was very hostile.

So, in 1998, they eventually divorced.

I got too close to the water.

My mom got custody of the five kids,
provided that my dad gets custody of the

bus.

He takes the bus, and in the bus... It's
all Michael's tapes.

And my mom believed that they were the
secret to salvation, the shortcut to

heaven.

So my mom matches a plan where there's
one bus window that doesn't close all

way. It never closed.

So my mom has me slip into the bus while
my dad is out.

And I steal all of Michael's tapes back
so that we can have those to listen to.

I didn't stay in constant communication
with Warnecki.

Living was more about just managing,
taking care of the kids, getting

done.

But I didn't discourage Andrea from
writing if she wanted to write.

That's her business, you know, her
choice.

Dear Andrea, praise Jesus.

I hope your pregnancy and birth goes
good.

We have a new addition to our family.

This is our little girl that was born
today.

Mary was born in November 2000.

What do you think about having a sister
this time instead of a little brother?

I still believe it.

But most importantly, that you would
come to know Jesus and be able to give

to your children.

Mary was a beautiful little girl.

I held her up, and she leaned forward
like she wanted to kiss me. That was the

sweetest thing.

I pray for you, Andrea, for you, Rusty,
and your family.

At first, Andrea seemed perfectly fine.

I know things are not the way you would
like them to be.

But then a few months after, Andrea just
plummeted very quickly down to the

state where she was in 99, which, of
course, raised the flag.

I've seen many women just continually
put off their salvation in Jesus.

Her symptoms recurred very quickly.

Jesus knows how wicked you are, how weak
and vulnerable.

She went from being kind of what seemed
like normal to in a worse state.

I know you're frustrated, Andrea.

She was just staring blankly ahead, had
a scissor leg.

picking at her hair, not saying
anything.

You are accountable for these children.

You can change them.

There will be a day when it is too late.

So I called around to try to see a
psychiatrist.

Oh, yeah, we got an opening, six weeks.
I'm like, we don't have six weeks, you

know.

I didn't know what to do. I'm like, who
do you call?

Don't look to Russell.

Look to Jesus.

I was at my wit's end at that time.

If you allow Satan to come in and still
be understanding, the consequences will

be tragic.

Everything was out of control.

Love and Jesus. Rachel.

The time I got this booklet, I figured
this could really well be my last chance

at salvation.

You have got to go through that cocoon,
that struggle, all on your own.

There are only eight butterflies on the
face of the whole earth.

They all have the last name Warnecke,
but I was really feeling that I could be

the ninth one and join them in this
spirit world of complete joy in Jesus

Christ.

Sacrifice is the essence, the center of
salvation.

So you have to sacrifice.

And what do you have to sacrifice?

You have to sacrifice yourself.

At this point, I believe I was my most
devoted and faithful follower, except

thing.

My job was holding me back.

Please get off your lazy butt, turn away
from yourselves, and watch God

supernaturally provide.

The test of my faith would be to quit my
job.

Don't worry about how am I going to pay
my bills. I will now be 100 % dependent

and faithful that God will provide
somehow.

Everything is work. You're under a
curse, friend.

And so that's when I quit my job.

To deny yourself is the key to victory
because you are your greatest enemy.

I would go to the mountain with my Bible
and all of Mike's material.

Free from distraction where I could
solely concentrate on finding God and

receiving revelation.

I would just pray and ask God, you know,
please give me light. God, you know I

want you.

Every night, I'd be begging, pleading,
please open my eyes.

But there was no divine encounter.

And so with the little strength I had,
but the last vestiges of hope, I just

kept crying.

And I was listening to one of his tapes.

Well, as you live, so shall you die.

You don't want to think about what might
really be wrong.

At that point, I started shutting down.

You can't do what God requires.

Depression, despair, defeat.

Just so overwhelming.

It was hard to function.

You feel horrible. All your tears are
just crocodile tears.

When you're convinced that everyone
lives in satanic delusion, there's no

turn to for help.

You are a lame man.

You've got to see, man. You're as sick.

You're left with emptiness and
loneliness and nothing.

You want to get what you deserve?

The next thing I know, you deserve hell.

I'm sitting there in a chair.

You know, suicide,

Is the ultimate self -obsession. With a
loaded shotgun in my mouth.

You're so grieved that you can't make
yourself happy.

And hey, I'm going to blow my brains
out.

Can't make myself happy.

I have Mike mocking me, telling me that
I'm worthless, that I'm nowhere, that

I'm just projecting false humility.

Oh, I feel so sorry for you. I just
can't follow what he said. It's Michael

Warnacki's fault.

But I was young, so I could take the
pain and battle it out.

So I stopped myself.

If I was 50 years old and had clinical
depression, it'd be really hard.

So maybe it was good that I met Mike
when I was young.

If I was older, I probably would have
really killed myself and died.

Well, I'm sorry, guys.

That's not a warrior.

That's not a person in God. That's a
piece of lard.

That's an unregenerate pagan who doesn't
want God.

So I don't know what a doctor would call
that, the combination.

Real connective depression and then
spiritual depression. You got it

So, yeah, it was pretty dark.

Oh, there was someone who had that. Her
name was Andrea Yates. That's right.

You must get right with God before it's
too late. The window of opportunity is

closing.

After Andrea's symptoms started getting
worse, I finally got a hold of a mental

health hospital in the area.

You only have a limited time to affect
those little lives.

Andrea's brother and I carried her to
the car and took her to the hospital.

Teach and discipline the boys.

And she was readmitted.

I called Noah to let her talk with Noah
a little bit.

Parents today do not know how to teach
their children, and thus they raise

rebels without discipline.

The only thing Andrea said was, I'm
sorry I've been such a bad mom.

First, it's not true. She was an awesome
mother.

Second, it's very out of character for
her to say anything like that.

After my suicide attempt, I didn't break
with Michael at all.

I believe that I've been given a second
chance to live and to find God.

Then one day I received a package that
contained a videotape.

I was afraid to watch it.

And it sat on my kitchen table for
several days before I could even muster

courage to put it into the VCR.

My heart was just beating with anxiety.

When I finally hit play.

You're wrong.

And you must stop and change what you're
doing. No reason for you

to have some awkward, uncomfortable
feelings of

change.

No, no.

I hear Mike imitating Satan in that
creepy voice and that grotesque mask.

I've already been eight years under his
teaching.

I felt like I was in a psychological
maze.

That's all that matters is what you feel
in your own heart about yourself and

about God.

After the viewing of the tape, I started
imagining the devil speaking to me all

the time.

And then soon another package arrived.

Mike sent a message saying that he could
meet with me.

I thought because I wasn't progressing,
he was coming to my aid, you know, much

like a spiritual doctor.

And I envisioned spending hours with him
in a park or someplace quiet.

But what I found peculiar was the place
he chose to meet, a McDonald's

restaurant. I didn't tell anyone except
Richard.

Me and Richard were childhood friends.

We were in the same fraternity.

And so he got exposed to Mike about the
same time that I did.

So me and Richard meet with Michael, and
it changed everything.

This is the first time I'm meeting
Michael in person since 1987.

He appeared shifty -eyed, worried, even
a little nervous.

And I experienced this immediate wave of
conflicted emotion and just figured

that the weight of the spirit must be
heavy upon him.

Then I remember Mike telling me, do you
remember the opening scene in The Winds

of Revolve?

When the farmhouse gets lifted into the
powerful winds of a growing tornado,

spinning and spinning, winds of
delusion.

That's you, David. You don't even
realize you're caught up in those winds

delusion. In fact, you're more deluded
now than ever.

I mean, my lips started quivering and my
spirit just shattered.

Richard was even worse than him.

He was told there's no hope for him at
all.

And then just like that, he walked away.

Me and Richard were stunned.

And then super late that night, I hear a
rapid bang.

So I rushed to open up the front door.

It was Richard.

Terrified, shaking.

Just freaked out. David, I'm going to
hell. You know, what's the point of

living? I might as well just end it now.

He was just convinced under Mike's
teaching and Mike's words that he was

to hell. Let me just go.

Let me get my punishment.

He totally saw no reason to live
anymore.

That's in a lot of scary horror movies.

Nothing can compare to the look and
fright I saw in Richard's face that

It's the most scariest thing you will
ever encounter.

No producer, no movie director can get
that on film. You can't act that. It's a

real experience.

It's a spiritual, frightening experience
that comes from the very soul.

He scared me.

And I was emotionally exhausted because
it took everything I had to convince him

to not do it now.

And he's my friend. I loved him. He was
my childhood friend.

And I know he's going to do it because I
know how he feels.

I know. I know what he's under.

You know, don't do it.

It drained me because I knew he was
going to do it.

Knew he was going to do it.

And he's my best friend.

That really, you know.

We talked for hours, and eventually
Richard decided to not take his life.

After my parents' divorce, my mom moved
us away to California.

But my mom doesn't really want to reach
out to Michael because she's pretty

ashamed and has a lot of guilt for
leaving my dad.

About two years later, Michael comes
back into our life, and God has told us

that you're just off track.

You're not spiritually in line with
where you need to be.

So you're going to come out with us, and
you're going to answer his prayer.

Praise Jesus.

Amen.

Glory to the Lord. It's going to hell.

It's going to the lake of fire.

And unless you wake up.

So we go out with Michael and all eight
kids.

They're headed for hell.

God's going to burn this world. They're
living in sin.

I guess I was old enough to be
embarrassed for the first time.

I saw people's reaction to it.

And then Michael completely drafted my
mom down in front of us. She's a wicked

woman. She's contentious.

She's living a life of sin.

You're so evil. You're sending your kids
to hell.

Michael had written my mom off because
she left my dad.

But my mom was... so we've got to get
back into good graces.

Her entire life was wrapped up in, does
Michael love me? Does Michael think I'm

saved?

So we had to Michael's tapes that we
hooked on the bus.

I noticed a frequency in Michael's tapes
being played.

The entire word of God speaks about the
last days.

These words are so ingrained in my head.
Not days of revival, but days of

intense.

powerful deception and delusion.

Overall, my mom's anxiety about going to
hell and sending her kids to hell

outweighed any sort of logic.

That's the point with Michael's
teachings. It's such an extreme dogmatic

stake. It's your soul for eternity.

I think ultimately, and I think she
regrets this now, that got in the way of

of the most The injury

was the sickest patient in that
building.

I mean, you could just tell. She was
like not hardly moving, not responsive,

communicative. And then within a week or
two, they said, oh, she might do better

at home. Let's try that, which is kind
of probably code for your insurance

now. It's time to go home.

When she came home, she was completely
out of it.

I didn't know it at the time, but Andrea
was having visual hallucinations,

auditory hallucinations.

You must stop and change what you're
doing.

And it led to the delusions she had of
having the devil in her.

Uncomfortable feelings of change.

No.

No.

But at the time, Andrea didn't tell me
what was going on in her head.

And none of us, nobody thought the kids
were at any risk at all.

Nowhere on anyone's radar was any
possibility of harm to our children.

Andrea Yates called 911.

Once authorities arrived at her home,
they found five young children dead.

Andrea Yates confessing to police she
drowned her children one by one in the

bathtub.

You see a lot of homicides, but you
don't see a scene like that.

Sergeant Randall Beatty never cried in
16 years in the force until he saw the

horrors inside the house.

Tragedy is an understatement. I don't
believe there are words in any language

that can describe what has happened.

After the tragedy, I had a very strange
experience.

I had nightmares that some of my
children had passed,

only to wake up and realize they all had
passed.

And I'm like, wow, how can reality be
worse than your nightmare?

But it was.

I had that happen probably, I don't
know, three or four times where I had a

dream like that.

And that's tough.

Today, the Yates children were laid to
rest.

The eulogy was delivered by Rusty Yates.

who shared loving memories of each
child, Noah, John, Paul, Luke, and Mary.

Rusty Yates wanted everyone to know a
treasured moment he shared with each of

his angels.

This photo with Noah, the oldest,
holding a caterpillar, tells a story of

family vacation to Florida. He said Noah
squealed when his caterpillar turned

into a butterfly.

Here's our butterfly.

Aww.

He wants to go.

The family pulled off the highway.

He set it free.

This is how I feel now. I'm setting each
child free.

That's the thing that was most shocking
to me about it all was just the finality

of it.

You know, you do anything to fight for
your children, for your family, but it's

too late.

What happened was just, you know,
incomprehensible. I mean, I just

know, looking back, you know, I
struggled with it all last night. I

sleep last night. I was like, you know,
is there anything I could have done, you

know? That was a lot at once.

It's like being thrown into a game
you've never played, you know, and

like, you don't know what to do, you
know, what do you do? So at the same

I felt compelled that, okay, I need to
do what I can to...

you know defend andrea and my family i'm
torn one one side of me you know blames

her because she you know she did it you
know but the other side of me says well

she didn't because that wasn't her she
she went through a postpartum depression

with our fourth child and it was very
serious uh then and she had attempted

suicide then and um i'm supportive of
her you know it's hard you know the the

woman here is not the woman that killed
my children so You know, if you see

this, I love you.

Right after I defended Andrew, a lot of
people were just like, well, if it's not

her because she's mentally ill, it must
be that rotten husband of hers.

People can't understand how a man, how a
father could support his wife after she

took the lives of their children.

I took a lot of heat for Andrew, but
people can think what they want.

They didn't live our life. They didn't
sit in the doctor's office.

Then a lot of people were saying, she's
the devil.

This is an absolutely evil woman.

Miss Yates fully and intentionally
drowned them one by one. This woman is a

beast who committed one of the most
horrible crimes I ever heard of. Hard to

believe that a mother could do something
like that.

There's this tremendous outcry to give
her the death penalty.

The state are pursuing the death penalty
in the Andrea Yates case.

The county that sends more people to
death row than any place in the U .S.

The entire country, the entire world is
like, this woman is evil, she's insane.

But when I first heard the news, I was
jealous.

Rather than horrified.

I just need a police officer.

Are you there alone?

No, my kids are here.

I got why she did it. I got why the kids
obeyed.

I would have gotten the tub.

So I understood it all.

How old are your children?

They're seven, five, three, two, and six
months.

So you have five children? Yes.

She did what she was supposed to do.

She made the greatest sacrifice.

She was saving her kids.
