The Gibson Flying V and the Explorer,
that look, the way that they're shaped,

that appeared into my childhood.

You put a bunch of guitars out and you
ask 100 kids to point at the coolest

I guarantee you like 95 out of 100 kids
are going to point at the Flying V. All

the heavy metal bands love the shape of
it. It looks fast, it looks scary, it

looks pointy.

Flying Vs are the perfect rock heavy
metal machine.

Just the feel and the look of it. Those
are the shapes. That's what every metal

guitar looks like, a V or a 4.

These are the unicorns of Gibson
history.

These are the rarest guitars.

They're so rare because they really did
shock the industry, and there wasn't a

whole lot of demand for them originally.

They were such a commercial flop, they
could barely sell them when they were

new. You know, in 1958, we only shipped
81 flying Vs.

which was a huge success in comparison
to the Explorer.

We only did 19 of these.

You know, if you fast forward 20 years,
say it's 1978, and you've got hard rock

at the top of the charts, and this heavy
metal thing is starting to become a

thing. All of a sudden, these two
guitars become very, very popular.

Today, they're the two rarest, most
collectible, most desirable, most

guitars on the face of the planet.

That's a mellow guitar.

I know, bro. Me too.

Bigger and better. I just wanted to do
something that would outdo season one.

What can be bigger? What can be better?

It doesn't get any rarer than the Flying
V and the Explorer. So I love them and

I wanted to talk about them and I wanted
to meet the band.

Hi, how'd you get into the compound?

How are you?

Good. Who led me to Metallica was my
babysitter's cousin.

And we were over at his house.

I think his name was Chris.

We walked into his room, and it was
like, to this day, it's still the

room in the world.

You know, when you're a kid, you just
feel like, the people that you look up

he was a skater, he was a rock and
roller, and he just had posters

So that's when I first saw Master of
Puppets.

And it was just like...

I'm never going to stop being a
musician, bro, because for me, music

better and better.

Guitar playing is a way of life, bro.

I slaved at Burger King.

I slaved, tossed the fries, man.

For like six months, I had to get one of
these.

And I was so damn happy when I got it.

Damn, I was happy.

And when I first got it, I was like,
man.

I had to get used to the shape of it.
You know, when you first get a Flying V,

you're like, this is kind of like, you
know, it's a weird shape. And I was used

to the round bottoms, but after a while,
I just came to love it all, man.

Yeah, it's a really special guitar.

The whole episode is just about the V
and the Explore. And to me, the V and

Explore... is you guys.

That was my childhood. Because I'd never
seen anything like that. That is a lot

of people, who they look to, and what
metal is. So it's so crazy to know that

this wild idea came out in 58, and then
no one fucking liked it, and they

couldn't give them away.

And now it is the iconic shape of metal.

And when they made them in the 50s, that
didn't even exist. That type of music

didn't even exist.

Gibson were ahead of their time, bro.

You know, the design was ahead of their
time because, what, 10, 15 years later?

Look how great they are for that kind of
music.

It's so bizarre that now it's like the
most, you know, sought after and the

hardest one to get.

And at the same time, I'm like, that is
my mentality.

Whether it's the old one, you know, 80s,
90s, whatever, it's just that D and

that Explorers, you guys, man.

Bro, I have a couple other rare ones.

Pops out the rarest this, the rarest
that, the rarest. It was insane.

want to say it's number one because I

confirm that it's number one.

It's 57.

57. The prototype, I think there's two
prototypes of the V, and it has, like,

this little diamond, like, in the crotch
of the V that they didn't do in any of

the other Vs when they went to line.

None of them had this sexy little thing
right here. What the fuck is that? Yeah,

they didn't. It's a stinger, and they
didn't put it.

That is so cool. I've never even seen
that before. I don't understand why they

didn't do that to all of them, bro.

You're just holding on to, like, the
first baby, and you just got him in his

house. How I kind of look at guitars is
just, like, how great they are in

getting what's in here and in here out
of the pickup, through the amp, and

into the world.

The Wellstrung Guitars is probably one
of the best guitar stores in our country

with some of the rare stuff. So it's a
good week.

I've never been here before.

The best part about this is, like,
getting a little bit of history, passing

down, just kind of understanding, like,
the importance of these vintage guitars.

in every color i've never seen this
guitar in my life like my childhood

the v and the explorer like it's
metallic so this is a 58 can you matter

this one came out later yeah this is
this came out in 53 but it's zero zero

number is a 58.

Which is the way they did it. This is
the only Explorer I have.

They're not exactly falling off the
tree. I know, man. I'm looking at you

like that. I'm like, okay, cool.

So they made about 18 of these guitars,
and then there was such a commercial

flop, this and the Flying V, that they
barely held up when they were new. They

were called the futuristic guitars.

There were a few models, and this being
one of them.

I think that's one of the cool things
about also doing this show.

You're meeting collectors, you're
meeting luthiers, you're meeting all

different people who make them, distress
them.

And that's when you get to sit with your
fellow friends and players and just

appreciate these fine instruments.

This is more expensive than the bees.
Yeah, they're more expensive than the

bees. Because there's only 19 of them.

The hardest thing to do on this whole
episode was be able to acquire...

Two guitars that we could then take the
Gibson so that we could reproduce those

and then make Maybe say like ten of them
and then sell those but also auction

off a couple So let's talk about big
head. So it saves ours a very dear

and we spent the last season building a
lot of stuff We both rebuilt flash

guitar. We rebuilt but given the guitar.

Mm -hmm. He had just bought big head
Tell me a little bit about it. This is

Explorer, but he picked it up from you
And you it's probably one of the most

expensive guitars Yeah.

In the world. Yeah, so there was a blues
band in Cincinnati,

Big Ed Thompson Band.

You know, obviously Big Ed was Ed
Thompson's guitar.

I bought the guitar and it really had no
history that followed the guitar.

We kind of found out about it after the
fact.

So, I mean, the guitar is named Big Ed.
It's named after its original owner, Big

Ed Thompson.

who was a blues guitar player in
Cincinnati, Ohio.

He bought the guitar brand new in 1958,
and it was his main ride through his

entire career.

Ed had a brother named Opal.

Opal played guitar as well, and Opal
bought the Flying V in 1958.

Like, these guys had really good taste.

So these two guitars had been discovered
by Rick Vito, who at that time was the

new guitarist in Fleetwood Mac.

Rick made the trip out to the club. The
guitar nerd and collector that he was,

he sees Ed on stage with this guitar.

He wound up finding the original family
and got both guitars.

For, you know, Rick Vito to walk into
this tiny dive bar in Cincinnati on, you

know, a Wednesday night and end up
walking out with a Carina set from the

original owner is as good as it gets.

Well, I'm pretty excited. I'm going to
go down to Gibson.

We're gonna see the head.

Everyone should have a fucking guitar.

This is the Corina Explorer.

This is the one.

Obviously, first you look at it, you
fall in love.

You fall in love with your eyes, but
then you plug it in and it just blows

mind.

It's beyond a guitar at this point. I
mean, it's somebody's entire career in

music is on this guitar, and you can see
it everywhere you look.

Here's the thing. Some people love to
find them just pristine and beautiful.

Like, it's wabi -sabi. Like, how do you
describe beauty? I mean, is it in full

bloom? Is it perfect when it's all
green? Is it in the decay of fall?

Is it the dead of winter?

Is it the blooming of spring? Like, what
is beautiful?

So, I mean, for me, I like seeing the
mojo. Like, Big Ed, literally, its neck

has his thumbprint in it. That feel.

He's got a dent on the wood there. Holy

See? Dude, look at this. There's like
this.

It's totally dense.

59 Les Pauls. There's some Les Paul
standards from the late 50s are kind of

holy grail. I mean, there's 1 ,600 of
those floating around.

There's 19 of these.

Even if you had the money, if you were
walking around with...

$2 million cash in a bag, you can't buy
one because they're not for sale.

Oh, man, it's so beautiful.

And the thing is, we couldn't get the
beat that his brother played, but we

Landfill. The Landfill Z.

It's crazy how it has some of the same
characteristics.

It's very close. I mean, yeah.

They look like sisters.

But when you see this staining,
that's...

That's really sweat and dirt.

It's on Big Ed also.

There's a lot of history there. And
there's a similarity at the neck joint

both these guitars where you can
actually see very distinctly the joint

line around it has collected dirt and
stain. It's not broken.

It's just been touched a lot.

It's really cool.

Putting that landfill and Big Ed
together, they almost had like the same,

they were just played at the same time.
They were super distressed and sweaty.

And so we're like, let's make these
because they just look like, they look

twins. And that was our decision to make
those two. So landfill, Big Ed, those

are our boys.

It's an absolute pleasure.

The hardest guitar, and one of the most
beautiful beats I think I've ever seen

in my life, was The Landfill, and that
was Chris Blakely.

Rarely do I sell a guitar.

These are my babies.

We're not considered just collectors,
per se.

We're preservatives.

We want to honor these guitars for what
they are.

The thing is, if you see these pictures
and you go, oh, wow, no way.

It just doesn't even, they don't even do
it justice.

Like four years ago, I put this part in
my mouth just for fun. I still have the

taste in my mouth. I don't know what it
is. I have no clue.

This is the pinnacle of what I've
amassed over 30 years of collecting.

When you did first approach me about it,
I was enjoying talking to you and

listening to what you had to say. But
then you said, and I'm going to buy the

landfill V, and I tuned you out.

I sat down. I just went, huh?

And so everything you were saying from
that point forward was really more of a

blur. It still hurt. It felt like I was
losing a child almost.

You'd get knots in your stomach actually
thinking about it.

But I also realized.

that it's for a greater purpose?

These are the unicorns. Yeah.

That's one of the greatest explorers of
all time.

This is, without a doubt, these are the
two greatest explorers in bees the

world's ever seen. I agree.

Scan them, do whatever you guys do, but
the idea of you building these two

unicorns, that's a big deal.

It's massive.

That is a big deal. It's a massive,
like, crazy idea that I'm like, I can't

think of anything cooler to spill.

For Tom Murphy to put that much time and
energy into Big Ed, which is the most

distressed guitar that I've ever seen,
and that goes the same for Landfill.

So for him to put all that work into it
and then be able to auction this off, I

mean, you really want to bring the money
because you want to get, like, gifts

and gifts is something that we really
want to give the money to.

For those in need, I just feel like all
the hours, all the love, the passion,

where this thing has been, it's a
beautiful little thing that we can do.

can showcase that, the spirit of that.

Give it to the world.

From my perspective as someone who's
supposed to be able to add the concept

the treatment of aging, this is the
ultimate test, really.

Have you already heard talks of Chaser
wanting to do the Big Ed at some point?

Yeah, and that sort of scared me when I
heard that.

But once again, it'll be a really cool
challenge for us in the lab because

guitars are very specifically our soul.

Important historically and rare.

sweat. I know, but it's crazy how...

masterpieces of music and art to be

able to be welcomed into Louis Vuitton

it was an honor.

done, you know? They make things to

protect the things that you love, and
they do it with class, and they make

wonderful art pieces.

were really special, and they looked

But they're like orange leather, and

Those just kind of age over time, so
hopefully they kind of go that orange,

they take on...

all the sweat and time and touring.

And so they'll get all battered up. And
so I think that was kind of the idea is

to, like, make something that's super
clean so that we can, it'll take on the

soul of, you know, what was taken on
tour, I guess.

Guitar has also inspired, like, a whole
style of music, which my mother

disapproved of.

there. And I'm going to be on stage

terrifying.

I've never been in a place where so many

world, are there supporting our hero.

At the same time, we're making this,

explorer, and we move everything over
