Half a million visitors
flock to Bermuda each year,

so keeping its beauty spots safe
and trouble free is a top priority

for the island's
376-strong police service.

Today, officers are launching
a major crackdown

on antisocial behaviour across
the island, starting in Hamilton,

the busy capital of Bermuda
and tourist hot spot.

The operation is headed up

by Trinidadian
Police Constable Krishna Singh,

who's lived in Bermuda for 30 years.

It's a good place to raise kids,

have a family, you know,
so I love it.

I love it.

And, as a family man,
keeping Hamilton's streets safe

from disruptive groups is especially
important to Officer Krishna.

I have a family. I have kids,
I don't want to live in a place

where people are drinking right next
to you, cussing and general bad.

To tackle the troublemakers,
Officer Krishna has assembled

a skilled group
of a dozen officers

from across the police service.

Right, everybody ready?

The Police Support Unit
will also be on hand,

alongside Police Constable Oba Swan.

There's a lot more manpower

and they're specially trained
to deal with these types of matters.

And also, the presence
of the K9 unit,

that will act as a deterrent.

Obviously, the dog will be able
to pick up things that we can't,

if someone should have some
sort of substance on them,

so it's a great asset
to have along with us.

Their target is Elizabeth Park,
in the heart of Hamilton,

popular with tourists
but also known for public drinking,

which is illegal in Bermuda.

So, we've got
a big convoy of people.

The PSU team, my team.

Well, of course we want
to catch these guys off guard.

We don't want to give them
any opportunity to hide anything,

or to run and move anything,
or to run off.

You never know, it could be
just a simple conversation

that could turn ugly
in a snap of a finger.

Hope for the best,
always be prepared for the worst,

because you never know.

They surprise a group of men
gathered in the park.

Can you step away
from the dog, please?

I just want you to move to the side.

Another man, separate
from the main group,

reacts badly to being approached.

All you have to do is
just stay there.

He tells officers
he's on his lunch break.

The police must now regain
control of the situation,

and quickly,
before it gets out of hand.

In peak summer season,

the police service's firm stance
on unruly conduct

isn't just in the parks.

Police are tasked with keeping
standards high on the island.

Today, Police Constable
Chris Douglas is on patrol

with his partner,

Police Constable
Miss Carol Skerritt.

Today we are going
to patrol the streets,

making Bermuda safer for all.

They're pounding the beat
with their eyes peeled.

She is a firecracker!

I mean, she is...

Wow. She is a stickler, for sure.

Carol Skerritt, yep, when they see
her coming from a distance,

oh, boy, you better make sure you do
what you've got to do, or you run.

There is an unshirted person.

There's a sign above you, sir.

Can you pay attention to that sign
and remove yourself from there, sir?

Have a good day, sir.

Officer Miss Skerritt is
clamping down on any infractions,

big or small.

There is a cycle on the sidewalk.

Oh, my gracious.

And a moped is parked
where it shouldn't be.

So, PC Douglas is going
to issue a parking ticket.

This cycle is parked
wholly on the sidewalk

and at no time
vehicles should be on the sidewalk.

And there are some ahead, so
I'm going to deal with those also.

Parking violations, loiterers.

Never a dull day in the city
of Hamilton, that's for sure.

This is $75.

Sometimes I'm kind of like more
focused on the beat and there it is,

Skerritt is like, "Hey, you missed
that parking infraction - get it!"

"OK, I've got it. All right!"

She doesn't miss a beat, for sure.

No spending money for you.

On the other side of the island,
Acting Sergeant Peter-Paul Taylor

is partnered with Brit
Police Constable Jonathan Wood.

So, today we're
on the Armed Response Unit.

We're in the unmarked car today,

so quite often we see more things
happen in front of us

because people don't realise
it's a police car.

Officer Peter-Paul has built
a reputation for high standards

amongst his colleagues.

He has a very no-nonsense approach.

I would describe him as very strict.

If someone could potentially
get a ticket,

if Peter-Paul Taylor's there,
they would probably get a ticket.

And it doesn't take long
for the eagle-eyed officer

to spot something
he doesn't like the look of.

So, I've seen a child
hanging out of a window.

Oh, right.
From the back-seat? Yeah.

Let's go and have a conversation
with that driver and see why

that child is hanging
out of the window

instead of in a seat belt. Yep.

Officer Peter-Paul
closes in on the driver.

That silver, grey thing?
Yep.

See him hanging out now? Yep.

You see the kid? Yep.

We'll see what
Acting Sergeant Taylor says,

he's a little bit more strict than
me, so we'll see what happens here.

I'd just be having words of advice,
but we'll see

what Acting Sergeant Taylor says.

When you came across, I actually
saw him hanging out of the window.

So, any child that's in the back
that's under 14,

must be in a seat belt.
Yes, I'm so sorry.

OK, do have your
driver's licence on you?

Well, it's your responsibility
not the child's, so...

Just make sure that your
driver's licence is in date

and it's all right.

Officer Peter-Paul checks
the woman's details

on the traffic control
department's database.

All is in order.

Stopped the driver,
had a conversation with the driver,

gave her some advice,
so hopefully that was just

a small lapse of judgment, and not
something that's a deliberate act.

Had there been a crash,
there's a high chance that child

could've been ejected
and seriously injured.

Luckily for the driver,

this time, Officer Peter-Paul lets
her off with a firm word of caution.

OK, all in date,
and the car's in date.

You can pull in there and just make
sure your kid's properly buckled

into the seat, all right? Yeah.

At the city park crackdown
operation, tensions remain high.

Officers Oba and Krishna
try to diffuse the situation.

It's just getting the word out there
that you don't know

when we're going to come, but
we are around and we are watching,

and we're noticing
what's going on,

and hopefully that helps
to change the behaviour.

Every so often, again, we have
to come in and let them know

that we're here, and to do
our best to try to keep

the atmosphere suitable
for all persons -

families, persons coming from work,

they want to sit down, enjoy
their lunch, they don't want to

listen to a whole heap of cursing,
people fighting and stuff.

Yes, they're going to complain,

they're going to want
to shout and scream.

This is normal. They'll go
on and on until we're done.

If they're sitting
and they're minding their business

and having their lunch, that's fine,
but you start behaving

in a way that offends people, then
that's where we have to step in.

One man was found carrying knives,
but when questioned,

he quickly offers
a plausible explanation.

This guy, he had two small knives
that are used to cut drywall,

and he did say that
he's a worker with drywall,

and his clothes suggest
that as well, so I believe him.

I believe him that he wanted to go
back to work with those knives.

The unique skills of canine handler
Officer Robin MacNab

and her dog Roni
are called into action.

So, my sergeant, who was speaking
with some gentlemen

who were on the park bench, asked me
to come over and search the area.

He thought that something
may've been dropped,

or just get an idea what was there,
because they were acting strangely,

in his opinion. So, I came round
and did a little area search...

Don't put your fingers
near the dog's mouth.

Come here, Roni.

..and Roni alerted to
something in the grass.

Officers now need to investigate
the source of Roni's alert.

We checked it and I believe it was
some type of controlled substance.

And once I made the alert,
I notified the sergeant,

and I'll let him deal with it.

Because it wasn't found on a person,

it may be a matter of drugs found
with no suspect.

Again, it's a deterrent
to show people that, you know,

that's what the dog is looking for,
that's what he's capable of finding.

It's extremely satisfying
when Roni alerts to something

and has a successful alert

because then you know
that all the training that you do,

it's actually working and
he knows what he's supposed to do.

And Sergeant AJ Baptiste
can confirm

what he suspects has been seized.

From my local knowledge,
it appears to be a small quantity

of a controlled drug. So even
1g of that would be illegal.

I believe it is.
I think it's shatter.

Shatter is the street name
of one of the latest,

most-potent forms of cannabis.

Without a dog,
it's virtually impossible.

Dogs makes everything
so much easier.

Most of the group
are allowed to disperse,

but one man's record
needs further investigation.

While conducting searches,
one of the guys that was searched,

nothing illegal was found on his
person, however,

there were confirmed warrants for
his arrest. Actually a total of six.

Absolutely, I do think that
this operation was a success.

Arrested somebody for warrants,
and, though small,

but we have also confiscated
a controlled drug.

And it's still the upliftment
of the community,

the upliftment to see the police
in the right perspective.

Peace has now been restored
to the city park.

No-nonsense Officer Peter-Paul
and partner Officer Woody

are still on the hunt for
any rogue behaviour on the roads -

this time, with the help
of some new tech.

It's an app that was designed
by one of the police officers

so we can check any vehicle
at any time to check

for the status of it being
unlicenced, uninsured,

make sure the driver
has the correct licence

for the vehicle
that they're operating.

Every passing number plate
is a potential opportunity

to crack down on wrongdoing.

Officer Woody runs the plate
of a bike in front of them.

It was a bit of a gut instinct
that it might come back

with something,
and on this occasion, it did.

impaired driving, 2023.

Where's he going?

There are outstanding warrants
tied to the bike,

including offences for
failing to stop for police.

Oh, mate.

The officer's must be strategic
in their approach

to avoid the driver
giving them the slip.

Police. Just turn

He went up to the bike, turned
the engine off, took the keys out.

Just jump off the bike.
I'll move it out the way.

Just stand there for me.

With a chase through the busy
streets of Hamilton now avoided...

Yeah, it's a possible
warrant for you.

..containing the situation quickly
is an Officer Peter-Paul priority.

So, we're just going
to put you in handcuffs

until we can confirm it, all right?
Pass the other hand.

It's at the top of
Spurling Hill.

So, the reason for us getting
out the car dynamically is,

not saying he was going to,

but we just want to make sure
we're not having a pursuit.

We didn't drag you off the bike,
I announced that it was police,

I came into your view.

And then once we gained their
compliance it's like, all right,

we've got to turn it down.

Tell you what, we'll just have
you sit in the back of my car

while we wait, all right?

Thought for a minute he possibly
was going to be quite resistant,

but in the end, he was OK.

The initial reason for the stop
is because when you came through,

you didn't have a sticker
on your bike.

The officers have a duty
to inform the suspect

the nature of
the outstanding warrants,

but the suspect doesn't
believe they are active.

So we need to check
at Hamilton Police Station.

If there's a sheet of paper
with the warrant,

then you have to come
to the station.

If there is no sheet of paper,
then you'll be released. All right?

I'm Acting Sergeant Tayler and
I'm attached to the tactical unit.

Advanced information
comes through on the radio...

Was there any update yet
for that?

..and confirms a warrant
is still valid

and the suspect must be arrested.

OK, yeah, I just confirmed it.
So, yeah, you're under arrest

for the outstanding warrant,
al right?

You're not obliged to say anything,
but if you choose to do so,

anything you do say, may be written
down and given in evidence.

We have to say that, it's just
part of the procedure, yeah.

and get somebody to take you down.

He hasn't been searched.

Just jump out. I'm just going to

Just to make sure
that you've not got anything.

The man will be taken
to Hamilton Police Station.

I know, we just have to check
though, because you're going to be

transported in somebody else's car.

The incident's been contained,

but for Officer Peter-Paul
and Woody,

the day's work is far from over.

After the successful park operation,

Officer Krishna and his crack team
keep up the pressure

on antisocial behaviour.

The next target,
the harbourside on Front Street -

a prime spot for tourists,
but also loitering groups.

You see how close it is
to where the ferry terminal is,

and when the cruise ships come in
and they take the ferry downtown,

as soon as they got off the ferry,
a few steps,

and they're going to be
exposed to antisocial behaviour.

We have all the guys hanging out
in Front Street, drinking,

playing loud music, arguing,
fighting with other...

I know that we've been getting
a lot of reports in the police

about the behaviour on Front Street
of people loitering in that area

and drinking and, you know, once
they've been drinking for a while,

they're making a lot of noise,
asking people for money

and being quite aggressive about it.

So we are tasked with trying
to stamp out that problem.

Once again, Officer Krishna's team
use the element of surprise

to catch as many
offenders as possible.

Are they there? Hold it there.

But on a small island like Bermuda,
word travels fast.

It seems the public drinkers have
been tipped off and gone elsewhere.

This'll be the area that
they're mainly congregating in.

Normally is about five, six guys,
or more, at different times.

This area's where these guys
have some of their stuff.

A grill right here, some trash,
and then just find other items

along the side. And clothing
and stuff like that.

It's all a no-no for this city.

It's a disappointing result
for the second sting,

but their work sends
a clear message -

the police are on high alert

for unacceptable behaviour
in public areas.

Unfortunately, no-one's here.

It can create a issue
in the sense that the gentlemen

that we're looking for
will now be aware that we're here,

so then they wouldn't
come by this area now.

Officer Robin and her dog Roni check
the area for any illegal drugs.

No matter what mood I'm in,
as soon as I let Roni out,

it's just, you can't not smile.

Hey buddy. Hey, come here.

Normally there's a whole bunch of
people, and there was nobody there.

With brining the canine,
I don't know if I really expected

to find anything, but
it's more of a deterrent.

Like, look, we're going to show up
all the time, randomly,

and we have a dog that can
detect drugs so if, you know,

you're down here taking drugs,
he's going to find them

and you're going
to be arrested for it.

This time, Roni finds
nothing suspicious.

What's this? Good job.

Come on, buddy.

People, if they see us
out here taking action,

then they know that
something's being done.

So, hopefully the warning
gets out to these guys

that we are going to be very
proactive in making sure

that they aren't engaging in
any antisocial behaviour

along this area.

Every so often, it helps to go
in and send a friendly reminder

that we are watching and that
we are going to be present

and on your back.

Over in the south side
of the island,

Police Constable Rachel Benedict
and Rajiv Bailey are on patrol,

continuing today's island-wide
crackdown on antisocial behaviour...

Alrighty, then.

..when they get a call
requiring an urgent response.

So, we've been called to
a residential alarm activation.

They've made attempts to get
in touch with the key-holder,

so we'll just head down there
and see if there's anything

that doesn't look quite right.

There are often false alarms
on the island,

but here, every call
is treated as an emergency.

Let's get ahead of this traffic.

There's nothing on there

Thankfully, there's no crazed
canine, nor any signs of a burglary.

Mmm, I can't see any doors open.

I'm telling you, this place doesn't
look like it's even occupied.

I'm not seeing signs of forced entry
or ladders, or things like that

that would make us think someone's
tried to force themselves in.

Then, Officer Rachel gets lucky.

Oh, someone's home?

We'll just get an update from them
as to what's going on.

It sounds as though an alarm
went off yesterday as well.

The assistant to the owner
of the property,

which is being vacated...

So, there's a fault
in the system, then?

..informs the officers
about the faulty alarm.

It sounds as though it's something
that's happened a few times.

So it went off yesterday.

They're going to try
and sort out their alarm

so hopefully we don't keep
getting called out.

Such is life.

Most of our calls are false alarms,
but when you do get those

genuine alarms, we want to make
sure we get there on time, right?

It'll be the one time that
we don't come that actually

someone's broken in, so it's best
to be safe and just make sure

that everyone's safe.

The scooter rider
stopped by Officers Woody

and Peter-Paul is under arrest.

That just leaves the tricky task
of getting his bike

back to the station.

I was hoping he'd be able to get
the matter dealt with very quickly

and therefore the bike would
be there for him when he came out.

So, we'll try and be
accommodating wherever we can.

I'll go in front of you
so you can guide me round.

Cool. Well, that's if I can get
it...start it up.

Being the good cop again.

Going to get a reputation now
of being a good cop, hopefully.

And the bike's back on the road.

After affecting the arrest,
we're now...

..we have a duty of care for the
person and the person's property,

so we're taking the person's vehicle
to Hamilton Police Station

so it can be secured outside,
so it's safe,

and also when the person
gets released,

the vehicle is outside the station
for them to take away.

So maybe it feels like
the Bermuda Police Service

are offering a bit of a door-to-door
service there with their bikes,

but that's probably not a bad thing.

As long as people
don't expect it every time!

Looks like he's got
your warrants in his hand. Cool.

The man under arrest is
checked in by the custody sergeant

and charged with previous
offences of impaired driving

and refusing to stop for the police.

We'll try, wherever we can with
the people that we're dealing with,

we'll try and be empathetic
to their needs and concerns,

just as I would want that if I was
being dealt with by the police.

Again, you're going to be
here for at least an hour.

The man will need to go to court,
but if he's lucky,

the process will be quick,
and he'll be released with a fine

Contrary to what some people think,

that we're just wanting to lock
people up and keep them there,

we're really not. it's much better
if we can get matters dealt with

and not have people held
at the police station.

I said to him, you know,
"It's still very early and if you,

"you know, if you're cooperative
and we can get through the procedure

"at custody quickly, there's a
chance to get you into court today."

And it looks like
that's what's happened,

so he can get on with his work
and not be in all weekend.

With the case in the hands
of the custody team and the courts,

Officers Woody and Peter-Paul can
return to their front-line role.

Back on the city streets,
Officer Chris and Miss Skerritt

are on foot patrol
in another of Hamilton's parks,

to show their trademark
high-visibility police presence.

We have entered into Victoria Park.

Named after Queen Victoria.

You will find sometimes drug
activity being conducted here,

so we come in here

and keep a lookout for
those kind of activities.

If we were not patrolling this area,
it would be a lot different,

and we don't want that.

Look how gaily decorated I am.

High-vis patrol,
that's what it's called.

Beautiful.

Officers Chris and Miss Skerritt
have worked together

since he joined
the police 12 years ago.

We just had that camaraderie.
Like, we work well together

and albeit that sometimes she can
be, like, this hardline approach

and I kind of have to go in like,

"OK, let's just bring
it down a notch!"

Though their styles may differ,
there's real respect between them,

and today the conversation
turns to a big decision

about Miss Skerritt's future.

Right now, I'm doing extra
to try to make ends meet...

Yes. ..because I have two homes
to take care of. Mmm.

Miss Skerritt comes from St Vincent,
an island in the Caribbean,

and in just a few months,
she will return home

after 18 years in Bermuda.

I've got to take care of Bermuda,

and I have to take care
of St Vincent and the Grenadines,

because when my contract do expire
and I go back home,

life goes on for me in St Vincent.

It's a contract.
A contract has an expiry date,

and when that time do come,
I must leave.

I got to leave.

I'm just dreading that day.

I know that time's going to
come soon, but, mm...

..I don't want you to go.

You sure you can't stay
for a little bit longer?

No, I can't.

But for now, Miss Skerritt
is 100% on a mission

to keep the streets
of her adopted home safe.

I love policing.
