we were just close enough

to getting to this other place.

think about that that much.

But if you had to think about a legacy,

I would just say unfinished.

and it could have been a longer story.

to have you here with us tonight.

Well, we certainly hope you
brought your dancing shoes

and you got your wig on tight.

hear some funky soul music

that's clean out of sight.

It's at this point in the
program that we're very proud

to bring out our master of ceremonies.

He's a man whose legacy
looms large in the community.

You might know him from
such immortal classics as

- [Speaker] Chadwick wasn't even a singer.

- I know. (speaker chuckles)

The way this whole thing played out

was really serendipitous

because my memory of it was,
it was about seven years ago

or so, and we were all hanging
around in a bar somewhere

and some soul music came (coin jingling)

on the jukebox and
Chadwick was like singing.

And it was like, really?

You can do this?

Danny's whole thing forever is

that he wanted to make a soul band.

And then when he heard Chadwick singing,

suddenly it became a possibility.

Chadwick was the guy
that kind of sealed the deal.

'Cause it was like, as
soon as we've got this guy

with this voice, he can sell this.

And the rest of us, we know we can play.

We just have to stand
back in the background

and look cool (chuckles).

- The name came out of
kind of a moment of whimsy,

lighthearted, drunken repartee.

♪ And you say it's not live before ♪

- This band feels like it has a chemistry.

If things fall the right
way for us, it could,

it could really go somewhere.

owner is very gratifying

and amazing and (tools clatter)

sometimes it is glamorous,

but most of the time
it's doing stuff like this

where you're just, (garbage crunching)

nobody else is available.

So you are stomping the trash down so

that you can actually
get through your session

for the next three days.

18 people's worth of trash is

not gonna fit in this trash (laughs).

- This is a high pressure deal

because not only is it a live performance

and there's no computer involved
and we're not gonna go back

and do punches, we're very
much doing this in the spirit

of the era, that puts added
pressure on an unseasoned

performer to perform. (upbeat music)

- Danny and Chad Stockslegger
were talking about wanting

to put a soul band together

and they kind of asked
me if I had knew anybody

and I said, what about Chadwick?

They were like, oh, can he sing?

Because I know he played bass, but,

they're kind of looking at each other like,

I didn't know he really sang.

And I was like, oh, oh,
you haven't heard him sing?

And this is where I
was kind of bullshitting

because nobody had really
heard him sing like that.

And then their first
show is when he just blew

everybody away.

And that's when I was like, who is that?

(upbeat music)

(Chadwick singing)

- If I tell you I was laying with my head

om my mother's lap the
day we were getting ready

to come down here to do that first show

and she was trying to ease
me through a panic attack,

my man, I was freaking out.

I was like, I don't know how I'm gonna

do it, but I gotta show up.

never not showing up.

How do I not do?

Oh my God, I gotta rip the bandaid.

It's nice for you to get closer,

I think the intro like,

and also I know that
we're not, there's no vocals

with this either, but that line is so good.

I think it's great at this volume,

but it always feels like
you might come out just a

touch too strong at the top.

- And like I said, we can
work, work on, we can,

I mean when we're,
when we mix, we'll also do

that stuff too, but you might

as well do it in your performance.

- Well, I think it's a matter of

finding the balance within those three,

but I just think stylistically

with this track, I don't want the horns to,

I mean poke is the wrong word,

but to stand out as much
as they're doing all right.

I definitely hear it as
more like a room blend.

- What it almost feels to me,
I mean I hate to be the one

to suggest this 'cause
it's not, it's the opposite of

what we've been trying to do so far.

But I almost feel like if we wanted

to mic the horns individually,
now would be the time to make

that decision rather than tomorrow.

I was saying this to the
horns earlier, like if you listen

to horns from albums from this era,

you will always be disappointed
with some of the balances.

- [Speaker] The blend always.
(speakers speaking at once)

- They're never gonna be right.

- And so, that's just it.

I think it's a philosophical
question of like,

do we actually want to overcome that

or is that a function of like,

trying to serve this era
and trying to be retro.

We don't have to scrap
a, I hate to scrap a take

because we didn't have
the horn balance right.

And we won't really do that.

We'll just let the horn suffer
is I think would happen.

- Is that something that
you'd want to do now?

- Yeah, that's what I'm saying.

I'd rather do that now than

to try to do that at any point tomorrow.

- Okay.

I would say we should just

- I obviously lean towards feeding the

big hole I have in my

creative endeavors to myself.

Ultimately, I'm a real, big homebody.

and I sit at home with my lady
and watch some "Star Trek"

and, or just go out just to be out.

Man, I would be at home
watching that "Star Trek".

We all have a superpower.

It was like X-Men

and everybody got bullied,
everybody got picked on.

But when they put on
that whatever, that face,

whatever it was, then
they could do anything

and they could be greater
than what they were

when they woke up that morning.

It was kind of like that.

It's like, I'm pretty docile, stay at home.

But when it's time and I'm standing

at the curtain, (cymbals hitting)

it's like you get into a (funky music)

different level of self.

It's like being the alpha and
the omega at the same time.

You just do.

And it's the most natural

but you do that when you're a kid

and you're all hormonal and
don't know what's going on

and don't have the perspective

of living a little bit and going,
ah man, it's gonna be fun.

And then now, I'm married
and got a baby on the way

and super freaking happy.

The support, the partnership,
all that kind of kind of thing

that you hope you can get, you know?

'Cause just like playing
music for a living, or as a career

or a big passion thing
that I kind of am driven,

compelled, like, have to do.

I wanted to be a father, I
wanted to be a husband.

I wanted to have a kid
or kids and grow that.

It's all kind of like happening at once.

It's like, (laughs).

I had a dream one night.

I woke up the next morning

and I was like, man, I could
see me holding my baby

by a window in a rocking chair.

And so we moved in

and it was like, man, do you think we can

put the rocking chair back there?

I was like.

So, when little man gets here,

we're gonna, we're having a boy by the way-

cool rocking chair.

I sit, read a book, kind of do the thing.

And it's a recliner, bro.

and take care of the kid and do the thing.

We got special models

get this thing tighter.

So having people work on some

the original idea, right?

- Yes, the idea was that I wanted them

to gaze lovingly in each other's eyes

a terribly difficult move.

It's just maybe we, then
we're not in a position

where we can just freely
switch between any of the songs.

So, in that point then
it's just strategizing

So the first four lines

or five lines seems like

you were trying to find your footing.

But once you found it, you found it.

last chorus is very powerful.

- I just, I keep hearing the
phrasing on those lines just

slightly behind the beat somehow.

I don't know, it felt a little rushed.

And maybe that was me.

I was playing too fast, perhaps?

- [Chadwick] Also,
it's not a natural state.

Right? Like, I'm still
a bass player at heart.

'Cause I do have a tendency
naturally to take more time.

- Mm.

- And then it's like, well no, you need

to, you know, speed it up.

So then it's like to speed
it up and also wait to do it.

- Right. - So it's like, ah.

So it's not a natural way to start.

- [Speaker] Is it, hey Chris, is it

that Chadwick is pulling you guys back?

- Oh, I feel like it's rushing.

as far as defining like,

how to solve that.

I felt like Chad driving on piano was

just going, I think he, I felt-

I feel like you can still do

what you want to do with
the phrasing and the band.

You know, the keys
will should disregard that

and not let you pull them in a direction

that's, you know, too quick.

- Well, and it's possible that
slowing it down slightly will

give you a little more
space to kind of play with.

- Right. - That's my whole thing

is like, if, you're singing
right with the changes,

it feels kind of like...
Right, with the change.

- Normal, yeah.

Like that's what would be normal.

always been like that.

I've been love lorn most of my life.

that I feel like the other shoe is dropping

never fronting a band to

now I get to have experiences like this

and having you ask me
questions and having cameras

and being in a studio and
singing songs I've written.

And then I liken it to
the energy of becoming

a father for the first time

and being a part of creating the most

important work of art I'll
ever be able to, you know,

I mean it is an emotionally
supercharged sort of thing.

I mean, I'm totally excited.

My whole life,

I've wanted to not just
be an artist and musician,

but I've wanted the opportunity

to be a quality father and a husband.

And I'm hoping that I'm doing it.

And hopefully I can do that
with him when he gets here.

drawing the emotion

out of recording is I'm trying

to transmit those memories to the listener.

I actually want the listener

And sometimes that is
through technical excellence.

Sometimes I try, I go to great efforts

to make things sound very realistic.

And just like you're sitting
in the middle of the room

with the band surrounding you.

I mean, I love that recording technique.

It's all about transmitting emotion.

Music is, we're trying
to be immortal of course,

in the end by making music at all

and trying to participate
in this whole endeavor.

Because we wanna reach
out through time and space

and we want to touch somebody else,

as many people as possible

because humans want
to connect with each other.

That's all we care about.

And it's amazing that we
could make this recording here

and it could be a hundred years from now,

somebody will be really
touched by this recording.

And the pursuit of trying
to do that is worthwhile.

away from each other so much

in a parking lot in the midday sun

but I would do this for free.

- I remember talking with Chadwick

after the recording sessions at Echo.

We were like, dude, we gotta get together

and have another double date.

(speaker laughs) - Yeah, I remember that.

- [Speaker] But he was like,

"Hey, I hate to do this. I gotta bail.

We're doing a babymoon
and we're going to Fort Worth."

And I was like, "Dude, of course,

like you gotta go do that."

But at some point, I had a conversation

with him about that same time.

And I don't know if it was that same day,

but he told me, you know,

that he was concerned about the amount

of air that he was given when he sang.

And he-

Sorry.

(throat clears)

(speaker sniffs)

- So the babymoon, which is funny

because I remember he
said, "You know, there's this,

it's called a babymoon.

And you go right before you have a baby

and you just the two of us."

And okay, I'm down.

That trip in particular, he was very tired.

He was sleeping a lot,
which was abnormal for him.

I mean, he was taking multiple naps

and you know, we were there to spend time

and it was just, he was so tired.

At that point,

he wasn't sharing with me
as much about the shortness

of breath in which that
kind of started progressing

you know, in the next couple of weeks.

He had gone to an ear,
nose and throat doctor.

They diagnosed him with,
you know, severe allergies

and they had him on this treatment

and he wasn't showing any improvement.

And I said, you know, maybe
you should go to your doctor.

And he said, well I wanna
give it a few more days.

- I had messaged him
and left some voicemail

and he hadn't returned
either in like a day.

Okay and I was like, that's weird.

Why have I not heard back from him?

So he's never done that.

And I messaged him again

and he messaged back,
sorry, I've been dealing

with some allergy crud.

I, it's my throat's hurts

and I'm having trouble breathing.

And I'm like, oh no, is it COVID?

He said, no, it's not COVID.

I went to the doctor,
we got tested negative,

but they're just, they
think it's just allergies.

So they got me on this thing.

And, so I thought, okay, well great

and hope you get feeling better.

- And then, it just started getting worse.

And I think that was the biggest thing is

that he didn't have any energy.

He was struggling and
I was really worried at

that point and I was
trying to get him to go

and he didn't want to,
which was not like him.

He always went to the doctor.

And I found out later, I
think he had told some people

that, you know, he didn't wanna worry me

'cause I was pregnant.

He didn't wanna stress anything.

And then the next morning,
you know, it's like, okay,

this urgent care opens
at this time, let's go.

You know, he didn't wanna go yet.

And I finally had to say,

we're going.

And he agreed.

And he asked if I would pack him a bag.

And I said, well why do you
want me to pack you a bag?

And he said, well, 'cause
I know they're going

to put me in the hospital.

And I said, how do you know that?

You know.

And that was on Saturday

and Tuesday we had an ultrasound

and those were the only
doctor appointments that he got

to go to were the ultrasounds.

So he was ready for that (sniffs).

And he told me as we were leaving that,

that's why he didn't wanna go,

because he didn't wanna
miss the ultrasound.

So, I took him in that Saturday

and they wouldn't let me go in.

Because he was presumed
COVID so they wouldn't let me in.

I had to drop him off at the door.

And I went and just parked
my car in the parking lot

'cause I didn't know what to do.

I don't wanna leave.

- He messaged me, well, it's not COVID,

but I'm in the hospital
with some respiratory stuff.

They don't know what it is.

They're doing tests, trying
to keep me off the machines.

And we texted back and forth.

I didn't get to speak to him

'cause he was already on oxygen.

There was a lot of visiting the hospital.

A lot of, well, okay,

well, today these numbers
are looking kind of better.

And then, well, now we've
had to turn down the wrong way.

And oh, well, it's a lot of that.

It was three week, three
and a half weeks of that.

So, very difficult.

It was certainly hard to see him like that

with all the machinery and
all the, he didn't want that.

And they had had him sedated.

So he was just out, you know,

it wasn't like we were
able to visit the nurses

and doctors tried their best

and they were all very frustrated

and they were all just, (hand smacks)

I'd never seen a group
of doctors and nurses.

So kind of pissed off honestly
that they couldn't figure out

'cause they knew he had a
pregnant wife that was due

and we're gonna figure this out, dammit.

You know, and they tried everything.

It wasn't like, oh,

if only we caught it earlier or something.

This was one of these
things that was just a rare

autoimmune type of disease that was,

that whatever reason decided, here we go.

And the timing is
obviously, obviously tragic.

(soft music)

(baby coos)

- My mother-in-law, Chad's mother was there

and she said that he
was getting really restless.

Like, he was kind of fidgeting

and kept turning his head, you know.

And she was asking him, you know,

do you want this, do you want that?

And he couldn't communicate,
but he could blink.

She said, you know, do
you want to call Hannah?

And you know, he was blinking.

And so they video called and
I had Lennox there at home

and he got to see him.

And, you know, a lot of people
have different opinions about

what his level of, you know, coherence was.

But he got emotional when he saw Lennox.

And so, I fully believe
that he knew exactly

what was going on and I
know that he saw Lennox.

I know it.

(soft music)

- That weekend here was incredible.

- Yeah, yeah.

- You probably have a
lot of weekends in here,

so it's probably hard to (speaker laughs)

remember every single one.

But I remember things vividly.

One of my favorite memories
about all this is when you

have a bunch of different creative people

and they all have different personalities-

- [Speaker] Yeah.

- And different arrival times.

- [Speaker] Yeah. - Right.

It's like, okay,

well, we have this schedule
and we're gonna meet it.

And then you get here you're like,

all right, fuck that schedule.

We're gonna do whatever
is happening at the moment.

And specifically what happened
with the "Song of the Truth"

kind of came out of that.

- [Speaker] Yeah.
- [Speaker] And I remember

being very stressed about all of that.

'cause it completely
went against the schedule.

- [Speaker] Yeah, yeah.

- And then here we are two years later

and what happened with that song?

And then, you were so busy you had gone on

and we're like, okay,
well we're gonna take this

and finish recording it elsewhere and get

and mix it elsewhere.

And that was fucked.

We eventually had to
give it back to you to mix it.

And it ended up sounding perfect.

- It ended up being one
of those things where

you leave something

and you feel like, oh,
it should be this thing

or it should be that thing.

And you have expectations about it.

- Yeah.

- And then after you try a few
of those things, you go back

and listen to what you actually captured.

The chemistry you captured in the room.

- Yeah.

- And you realize that was so strong

and the only reason you missed it was

because you had an idea
that it should be something else.

- Yes.

- When you open yourself
up to what it really was,

you realize how beautiful it was.

And then we all listened
to it exactly as it was.

And we're feeling like,
wow, this is so good.

How did we not see it?

instantly that Chadwick

connected with this place.

So, I think he was really
gelling with his energy

and his performance and his confidence

was really coming to a peak at that point.

And then for us as well, I
think we were like starting

to feel like we were really
finding our musical place

- At that point, it was all
just kind of looking forward

and hoping for the best and
saying, we got these hot tracks.

Let's do this old school
style and have some fun.

(speakers chattering)

- It did feel pretty magical.

It felt like things were
falling into place with us

as a band and him and him
as a front man and an individual.

So it was a really happy moment for sure.

- It's weird being out here.

I don't know if I've been
out here with Chadwick

not with us.

You know, so it's definitely
an interesting experience

and especially, when I feel
like the last couple of years

have been somewhat of a blur in a way.

- [Speaker] What do you think the legacy of

the "Bastards of Souls" gonna be?

(speaker sighs)

- Man, I mean, it might be a little,

ah, yeah.

Well, I think (hand smacks)

we were a good group of dudes

and we appreciate good music.

We liked making good music together

and we got the opportunity to do that.

But I think it was cut short

and it could have been a longer story.

You know?

It could have been a, it's tough.

Yeah.

- I don't really think
about that that much.

But if you had to think about a legacy,

I would just say unfinished.

- So much of disappointment or sadness

or dissatisfaction is rooted in loss.

And it's very difficult for me

to look at anything involving that really,

you know, four year period
where I'm very closely attached

to the band, that's not rooted in loss.

All of it is loss.

Like, all of it.

You can't dwell on those things.

You move on and it feels silly,

you know, when I think
about it, it feels silly

to feel those things when
you think about, okay,

whatever loss I experienced
personally is nothing compared

to the loss that Hannah, you know?

What I'm trying to say is
when I reflect back on it,

I feel all of that and I feel
all of it at the same time.

But then I go listen (soft music)

to the records and I love
listening to the records.

unfulfilled potential of the band.

But I am very grateful
that we have three albums

that showcase the chemistry

that we all had, Chadwick's talent.

But I just hope people will
remember us, you know?

Chad had talked to me about Keite

and I remember him telling me,

and it was during, you know, some of

the recording session at Echo

and him talking about just how
special he thought Keite was.

you get asked to sing something

that means that much to someone?

I just wish it was Chad singing it

but I just think that Keite
really channeled all of that.

think Chadwick's legacy is?

- I think that people will remember him

as an incredible performer
and a great singer.

But I think the people that
knew him will remember

what an incredible person he was.

- Anyone who ever saw him sing

and work a stage, remembers
it and with fondness because

it was, you couldn't deny it.

And then, of course, just
to know him was to love him.

He was a very special dude.

And I don't think you would find anybody

who would say otherwise.

- I'm so proud of him.

I really am.

I love, it can be hard sometimes,

but I love talking about him to people.

I love it because he is
such a happy memory.

- I think it's this feeling,

how he made everyone
feel, how he made me feel.

I don't think that people forget that.

There was no one when
he died that didn't know

that he cared for them
and that he loves them.

'Cause he made sure of that.

Us having that as this example

for how we treat others.

That's his legacy.

That energy, that spirit.

You know, he doesn't go away.

He is, he will never go away (chuckles).

He was way too big for that.

- His legacy is just the
one of the best dudes

you'd ever meet in your life.

And I have no doubt that,

he was a great father
before his son was born.

He showed all of the signs
of what a great father is.

That's the element, the band,

whatever.

That element of him,

'cause I know, I can't imagine

what it would be like for, you know,

'cause I'm in a similar situation.

My son and Lennox are months apart.

That's the biggest unfinished
business that shouldn't be.

I don't care about the band, ultimately.
