Today, for officers in Bermuda,

a shock discovery...

That's coming with us.

It looks like a home-made machete,
doesn't it?

...an emergency on the road...

...and cracking the case
of a fatal double shooting.

His behaviour seems a bit off,

so we've just requested
for the bike units to come.

Bermuda may be idyllic
but like anywhere in the world,

it does experience incidents
of the most serious crimes.

Significant today, and tourists

wouldn't really see this,

there is now
I think what we would call

a gang culture in Bermuda, sadly.

Even though we're a paradise,

we still have those kinds of issues.

It's something that the Caribbean
region itself is dealing with.

Gangs have become more violent.

Two days ago, gang-related violence
spilt onto the streets

of capital city Hamilton,

where there was the rare incident of
a fatal double shooting.

The suspects were two persons
riding a motorcycle,

and it appears that they rode up
on the victims and opened fire.

Two were killed

and one was injured but they're
expected to make a full recovery.

On such a small island, the police
service is under immense pressure

to find the bike that was stolen.

It's possibly key evidence to help
them catch those responsible.

When a crime of that nature happens

this one was particularly heinous,

in broad daylight on a very busy
public street, a lot of witnesses -

I think there was quite
a bit of shock.

Is there extra pressure with it
being linked to a murder?

I'd say so.
This is super important.

Police Constable James Adams is
part of a 20-strong team

trying to find the bike.

The team also includes,
on two wheels,

Police Constable Jonathan Flood.

A crime is like a puzzle,
at the end of the day.

If that bike is gone, then that is

just... one piece, two pieces,

a big piece, of that puzzle that we
just don't have,

and it makes it just that much
more difficult.

We had spent the first day out
and about looking for it,

so now this was the second day that
we were out.

We had been dealing
with bad weather,

which could've potentially affected
any sort of DNA

that could've been retrieved from
the motorcycle.

So we are against the clock.

Two square miles of dense woodland
is being searched

based on the vehicle's last
sighting on CCTV.

- Nothing this way.
- No?

All grown in. They weren't...

They definitely weren't coming
through here.

Partnered with Officer James is
Police Constable Bryden Pedro.

It gets to be quite
a dirty job sometimes.

But this is what we're up against.

It could be anywhere.

No sighting.

Then, over the radio,
news of a vital lead that might help

take the police
to those responsible.

Sounds like Flood
has found a motorcycle helmet

and a shoe that appears to be
out of the norm.

He's called in for our sergeant
to come check it out.

The police hope the items
are linked to the fatal shootings

because they could hold forensic
evidence that cracks the case.

Any sort of small thing like that
could turn into something that,

you know, changes everything.

On the west of the island

is Bermuda's luxury cruise ship
terminal at Dockyard,

part of the beat for Geordie
Police Constable Adam Thompson.

When there's no tourists,
then Dockyard is, erm...

...it's pretty dead to be honest,
you know,

especially in the off-season
as well, January, February time.

You come up here some nights
and it's like a ghost town,

and then it just completely
changes in the summer, you know.

Like, summer,
it's absolutely packed.

All the restaurants are busy,
the hotels are busy,

you see everyone flying around
the island on jet skis, you know,

and it just makes it feel like
summer's eventually came

when all the tourists get here.

Former chef Adam has been in
the police service for over a year

and in Bermuda for more
than a decade.

Being in the police force where
the shift pattern's working

night shifts, I tend to get more
time off than what I did

when I was a chef cos you'd be
working six, seven days a week.

Every day you get off is
just like... it's just like being

on holiday, right? You're on jet
skis, you're playing golf.

We're very grateful. Very grateful.

But like his partner,
Police Constable Ogilbie Morgan,

Officer Adam has yet to experience

a busy cruise ship trip departing
from here.

10,000.

- 10,000? What?!
- Yeah.
- You reckon?

- Yeah.
- That just seems like a wild
amount of people.

- Yeah.
- Maybe about 300, 400 rooms.

I've got no idea. Never been on
a cruise ship in my life.

You think you would want
to go on a cruise?

I think so, man. Me and my fiancee
talk about it all the time,

it's just where I would want to go.

There's one you can go, like, in
Europe and you can do golf trips,

so you can get off in, like,
Portugal, play some golf,

get back on, wake up somewhere else,
in Spain, play some golf,

- so that sounds wicked.
- Yeah.
- I just need a...

- That would be a vibe for you.
- I just need to convince my fiancee

- that I'm going to play golf
on my vacation, you know?
- Yeah.

Reassured that all is well here,

Officers Adam and Ogilbie

continue their patrol in the west of
the island,

always alert for urgent matters
that may require their attention...

Being a police officer

a nice peaceful day can just flip
on its head.

...when they spot a man lying
motionless in a busy road.

Our location is out of Horseshoe Bay
Road. We've just came across

an elderly gentleman who's just
face-planted on the floor.

He's bleeding from the right
side of his face.

Can we get an ambulance here
immediately, please?

There's been the shock of
a double fatal shooting in Bermuda.

How are you guys doing today?
You all right?

Officer James and a large police
team are searching for

the stolen bike that's been ditched.

Nothing.

It's a race against time to find it.

It can be really tiring.

An easy 20lbs to 30lbs of equipment
that we wear,

the sun's beating down on you.

Bermuda's climate is
very humid, as well.

We're walking up hills, down banks.

Just want to find it so badly,
and I know it's here somewhere.

It's got to be here.
This is Bermuda, it's an island,

it couldn't have just
magically disappeared.

Officer James has a very personal
motivation to find the bike.

His life was deeply affected
by gun violence 15 years ago,

before he joined the service.

I had a really good friend of mine,
a best friend of mine,

who was shot and killed,

and that was one that went unsolved.

So that, quite literally,
happened on my doorstep,

so very, very close to home,
literally home.

So, for me, that's a source of my
motivation now, for sure.

An abandoned shoe and helmet have
been found

that the police hope belong
to those responsible.

If so, they will hold vital
forensic evidence.

Taken photos and everything already?

It kind of felt like, OK, maybe
we're a step in the right direction.

Maybe the motorcycle
is just around the corner?

Police intelligence suggests

that the items DO relate to
a serious crime.

Just take it and put it in the bag.
All right.

Just not that of
the fatal shootings.

So sounds like this was in relation
to another matter,

not what we're directly
dealing with,

but it sounds like an incident took
place last night

while we were off duty.

- Hmm?
- No creases.

Yeah. We're just going to take
hold of it, seize it for now,

and then that would help
the investigating officers

of that particular matter.

Unreal.

The hunt for the missing bike

continues at a different location.

- Does look like some fresh
track here.
- Yeah?

- Yeah.
- Oh, yeah. That IS a fresh track.

But Officer Bryden spots something
even more promising.

Hey, I've got a door ajar.

Seeing the entrance to the back of
this abandoned house slightly ajar,

I thought, "Oh, yeah, it's going to
be in here."

After hours of searching,

Officers Bryden and James hope

that finally, this is the lead
that comes good.

Hello, police service.

Cos there was a plank of wood
that kind of went up as well,

and I thought, "Oh, this would be
perfect to just roll it in here

"and nobody would even think
to come looking."

Kind of unorganised tools.

I was about 80% certain that it
was in there.

And it turned out, erm...
to be nothing again.

A meticulous search
may be frustrating,

but with the clock ticking and the
pressure mounting, it must continue.

Officer Adam and his partner,
Officer Ogilbie, are responding to

the emergency of a man found
lying motionless in the road.

Where did he fall? He wasn't in
a vehicle, right?

OK, right. OK. No problem.

We came across an elderly gentleman
who had actually fell onto the road

and face-planted,

and that's not nice to see.

It's OK. Deep breaths,
deep breaths. You'll be all right.

What's your name, sir?

When you go into any
situation as a police officer,

the preservation of life is
the number one priority.

Can you tell me your name, sir?
It was... you said, right?

Make sure he's actually alert
and he's actually awake, you know.

Cos if he was unresponsive,

you might have to do

some life-saving

before the ambulance gets there.

Luckily, the man is conscious.

He did have a nasty graze on
his face, but he was breathing.

Do you have any identification
on you?

Has he got anything in his
wallet, maybe, or something?

The main thing was just to control
the traffic to make sure nothing

was coming round that area, then
just wait for the ambulance to come.

With the scene secured
and the ambulance minutes away,

Officer Adam must find out
who the man is

and what exactly has happened

in case a crime has occurred.

Are you on any medication, sir?

Do you know the reason why you fell?

Did you just lose your balance?

It could be a hit-and-run.
It could be, like, an assault.

He could've been pushed. So that's
our job is to just try and

figure out the whole story around
the situation that's just happened.

He must've fell, right?

Oh, you seen him actually fall?

With the incident
of a fall confirmed

and no crime committed, the rest
of the details slowly come together.

We have a friend of his that's just
came by, let me know his name.

We were lucky enough to have
some bystanders

who were helping
out on the situation.

Right.

And you've seen him just fall
and hit his face?

Well, at least he seems stable now,

and the ambulance should be
on its way soon, so.

SIREN WAILS
Oh, there we go.

One of them was his caregiver
who came. She was there very fast.

Oh, right, are you his caregiver,
are you?

And are you OK?

And did you go to check on him

and then you've just seen
he wasn't there?

Mm-hm.

It's revealed that the elderly
man has dementia

and has wandered away
from his nearby home.

He's got dementia, right?

Does he take any other medication or
anything that you might know of?

The man also struggles
with his walking.

He don't walk straight.

The only time he walks straight,
because he's an old soldier,

he'll say, "Hup two, three, four"
and he'll lift his leg and walk.

- OK, right.
- But otherwise from that
he do this.

Apart from a big case of shock
and some cuts to his face,

the paramedics confirm the man has
no serious injuries.

OK, come over. I got you.

You ain't going to go nowhere.
I got you.

He's taken to hospital
for a full check-up.

The guys'll take care of you.

He's alert and he's awake,
so that's the main thing.

They'll just take him to the
hospital now and get him patched up,

and then I'm sure he'll be fine.

But, yeah, man, walking... having
dementia, being that age,

walking in this heat, I'm sure
that's enough to...

I'm sure that's enough to make
anyone fall over, right?

It's been a difficult
incident for Officer Adam,

but one that turned out well.

Elderly gentleman, he was
discharged about three or four hours

after being in the hospital,
so he's doing well, he's OK.

Officers James and Bryden are part
of a large police team

searching for nearly two days

for a stolen bike used
in a fatal double shooting.

Throughout the days when we were
searching, there were definitely

times where you thought, like,

"Well, maybe we're just not going
to find it."

Muddy boots.

Muddy boots.

Sweaty clothes.

EXHALES SHARPLY
It's all right.

They redouble their efforts
to find the bike,

determined not to miss anything.

One of the suspects, from CCTV,

was wearing a blue shirt.

Perhaps it's a key piece
of evidence.

It's just Public Works'.

Probably fell off their truck.

They try every possible
hiding place.

You got a bike in there?

No? All right.

Come back next week.

Eight hours into his shift,
with no possible sighting

and still desperate
for a breakthrough,

Officer Bryden spots a bike fitting
the description of the vehicle.

Yeah, 10-4, we've got
a guy wearing black.

He's off a bike
on the grassy stretch.

A young man is with the bike,
acting suspiciously.

Just his behaviour seems a bit off,

so we've just requested

for the bike units to come

to drive over to him.

- Bike registered to you?
- Yeah.

It's cool.

The young man was not
involved in the fatal shooting.

The lead was yet another dead end.

The gentleman was very pleasant.
He was having his lunch.

There was nothing untoward.

Do you mind coming
and popping the seat for us?

Er... Yeah.

Now we're back on our way
to keep on looking.

After nearly 48 hours of searching
often difficult terrain,

the endless false leads
are taking their toll on the team.

Pretty much anywhere
we can fit a bike,

and then getting off on foot and
looking around, and it's just...

God!!

It's like a needle in a haystack.

And with hurricane season
approaching in Bermuda,

the job just got
a whole lot tougher.

When the rain came down, I think
definitely impacted our morale,

not in the best of ways, for sure.

Time is running out for the team.

This rain could potentially be, you
know, destroying evidence

on the motorcycle
that we're looking for.

It's been a long and fruitless day
so far for Officers James

and Bryden, but they have not yet
given up on finding the bike

and hopefully,
catching those responsible.

Officers Adam and Ogilbie are on
patrol in the west of the island

when they get a call to attend
a derelict building.

I'm supposed to put up some
no trespassing signs

- on either side of the building
up there.
- OK.

But I think why
they called you guys,

there may be somebody
camping out up there.

They said last time they had someone
up there with a dog.

The building has
attracted squatters.

Bermuda Housing Corporation, that
want to put some no trespassing

signs up on a building
that's through the bushes here,

the last time that they were here,
there was... I'm not sure if they're

homeless people but there was people
camping out and they had a dog

that was quite aggressive
and everything,

so they just want us to be present
to make sure everything's OK.

- Are we driving up there, are we?
- Yeah.
- Oh, right, OK. Cool.

The building is in a secluded spot,

perfect for squatters
to take advantage.

There's loads of buildings like this
in Bermuda,

isn't there, just derelict?

See if there's any squatters.

Hello? Anybody here?

There are no squatters
present today,

but there could be other threats.

Just want to make sure there's
no dog about to run out

and chew my face off. You never know
what you're going to find.

What have we got here?

That's coming with us.

but we'll have to take that away.

Just taking that off the street is
a win every day of the week,

you know. So if it gets in
the wrong hands

then someone can use it
for the wrong reasons, innit?

Obviously after finding that big
machete thing,

then, we've just got to make sure
there's nothing else.

They find no more weapons

and signs that the squatters
haven't been here for a while.

What? You think people
have been here?

It looks like it's a good while.

It don't look fresh, you know?

But they could return, so the
Housing Corporation install signs

which will allow the police,
in future, to remove them.

So the thing is with no trespassing,

you actually need to be warned
by the police,

a registered letter to say you're
not allowed on that property

or no trespassing signs.

So as soon as they pop them
no trespassing signs up

on this building and then there is
someone in the building

or around the building, it gives us
the power of arrest,

to immediately arrest them
for the offence. Yeah.

Just as Officers Bryden and James
are about to head home

after a long shift searching for
the missing bike,

there's a breakthrough call
on the radio.

Right as we're finishing up our day,
we received information

that another officer has located
a bike matching the description.

At the end of a long shift and you
feel like you may have come up short

and not located it, and then you get
some news

that you may have located it,
it's a rewarding feeling.

We started to feel like,
"OK, this must be it."

Your excitement level just shoots
through the roof.

Countless hours of exhausting work
for the police has come to this -

discovering whether or not
they've found the missing bike.

All right. Let's see what we got.

It's reported to be in the
undergrowth just off a narrow path,

impossible to be seen from the road.

Careful. Careful now.

You see that reaction timing?
That was quick, man.

Ooft.

OK. So it does appear that they
have located a motorcycle that is,

from what I could see of it,
similar to what we're looking for.

It very much looks like the one
that we were looking for,

cos there were some distinct
features about it.

Looking at it, we started to feel
this is definitely our motorcycle.

Officer Jonathan found the bike
and the payoff was worth it.

Hot, wet, and, erm, very sweaty,

but, yeah, it's good,
it's a good result.

I saw the bike and I was like,

"Nah, can't be that lucky."

Then, on closer inspection, I was
like, "Damn, I AM that lucky!"

So, once he called us back,
I was like,

"Ah, he's got it,
he's got the bike."

I've recovered bikes from up
here before.

We'll try and... try our luck,

and sure enough, there it was.

It's a major breakthrough
in a serious criminal case

and it could hold the key
to catching those responsible.

The challenge now is to get the
forensics team to the site of the

evidence, but they are stuck behind
a padlocked gate 400 metres away.

Where the motorcycle was, it was on

a property of a public playground,

but it was locked with
an Abloy lock,

and I believe efforts were made

to contact the key-holder of the
lock, but they weren't available.

Officers James and Bryden are the
crack team sent down

to pop the lock.

Our task is to open the gate up

so that we can start
processing this scene.

Feeling strong, feeling good.

I've had my Wheaties,
I should be OK.

But his confidence is
somewhat misplaced.

Pull the gate in towards me there.

Yeah. OK.

Oh, yeah, hold on, you guys. There.

That thing is real hard.

This is why firefighters
have got saws.

I gave it my best shot.
There's no shame in that.

Push against the gate.

Push that bar all the way there.

Just thought this is just so
typical. Like, we're just right

at the end here and all we have
to do is cut this lock.

And then get behind it.

Couldn't even make a dent in this
Abloy lock.

I believe it's designed specifically
to withstand that type of pressure.

Even with my partner's big arms...

THEY LAUGH

...it wasn't cutting it.

Luckily, a passing mechanic lends
the officers the right tools

for the job.

SAW WHIRS

- Nice.
- Job done.

With the forensics team now on site,
the urgent task of collecting

evidence that could identify
any suspects is under way.

Police Constable Robin MacNab
and police sniffer dog Roni

have also been called into action.

Now Forensics is doing their
processing. As soon as they're done,

I'm going to start with the search
and just check the surrounding area,

see if anything's been left
around the bike.

If a weapon has been left in
the area, that would be great,

and if we were able to turn that up,

it'd be fantastic as well.

It's been a tough
but rewarding day for the team.

Senior supervisors arrive

as well as the senior investigators
come to the scene and Forensics,

and, you know, they personally
congratulated our team

for locating it.

- All right, thank you very much,
everybody.
- Hell, yeah.

- Appreciate you guys.
- It's our
pleasure.
- Yes, yes. Good work again,

- Floody, man. Honestly, good work.
- Thanks, boss. Pleasure.

It felt very rewarding

and a reminder of why we're out
there working so hard.

To come out and personally
thank us face-to-face

and express their gratitude,
it felt... very inspiring.

It's a good day and a great result
for the Bermuda Police Service

and also the community as a whole,
you know,

because, at the end of the day,

what we do is also
all about public confidence.

Got the bike we were looking for
and we got the job done.

For Officer James,
it's all been more than worth it.

That right there is why
I joined the Bermuda Police Service,

just the spontaneity,
the emotional roller-coaster

of just you never
know what you're going to get.

You might think that it's all said
and done and then there's more

to say and do, and that just is
very much why I joined the service.

To our knight in shining armour,
PC Flood, he's just there

on the bike, about the roll out
as he sails off into the sunset.

Two males have been arrested
in connection with the shooting

and have been bailed
while investigations continue.
