This is what we're here.

Wow.

I mean, the genesis for this whole
season has been to take it another

even go bigger.

Last season it was it was like one of
the greatest times we had doing all the

hill climbers and one thing I've always
wanted to do Was board track like I just

think that's the coolest thing the board
track bikes. There's like the first

extreme sport Like was it five years
ago?

My first time here sleeping right there
stuff. I caught up right here.

I wanted to sleep by these girls. These
were my Favorite this thing blew my mind

Like the DHs over there, just the shape
of it, the look of it, everything. I was

like, wow, if I was ever a motorcycle,
I'd be that and that.

That's what put Harley in front of
everybody else, man. And from that

there was really no turning back.

Harley -Davidson debuted the Banjo Twin
Cam in 1919, and they made about 14 of

these motorcycles 100 years ago. Very,
very few exist today.

There's nothing on that motor.

that they were putting on their street
bikes, on their road model bikes,

nothing. This is like the beginning of
speed.

We're talking 10 years into motorcycling
and that first era of when they're

figuring out how to go fast and how to
go faster.

I mean, really the first time I ever saw
the Banjo and the Cyclone was just, I

was in awe.

You're just like attracted. You're like
pulled in by these bikes.

And I just want to ride them. I mean, I
just wanted to be able to experience

what it would be like.

There it is, man.

I mean, Matt, you ever rode a banjo?
Nope.

How fucking cool is this? I don't know
if there's a person alive today that's

rode one of those. All right, just to
put that in perspective, yeah.

Guys like us, we couldn't even get that.

That's your best of the best factory
team.

Once they're done racing it, they
destroy them.

So out of the maybe there's five.

Six of them known today out of the 14
and the rest of them. There's no telling

there I mean for any to even be out
there to look over in the first place

take a shot at replicating I mean, it's
a miracle I mean a great thing about

wheels through time is like all the
people that I've met having Nick and

there seeing it the dream just like
coming to fruition i mean at first when

ask anything of this scale it's nerve
-wracking yeah and uh you know people we

can relate to with that nerve -wracking
stress is going to be great you know

going to walks where a lot of those
ideas come through wheels of time i mean

competition distributions are there you
know they were there when we were kind

of drumming up the whole idea of like
how can we scan these so to build them

like this we have to basically

Sean? Well, you got to take and scan all
the data from that engine because, you

know, as Matt said, there's nothing that
replicates to a stock JD case in any

form. So everything about it is one
-off. Luckily, this time with the help

Sean and competition, we're able to make
things a lot easier.

Yeah, the lead time to go down, you
know. Keeping it in -house. Everyone

involved with it is a team player and
enthusiastic about these bikes and wants

to see all these race together.

The other one, which is...

on so i met aaron how did we meet uh

instagram like i meet everyone i got a
call and he's like i'm

Jason Momoa, I saw that bike you built.
It's freaking insane.

Can I come see it? Or, you know what,
just bring it down to my place.

Aaron is kind of like, Aaron,

they only made one of you. Thank you.

God went, yeah, we're good.

Because everything I would ask him, he's
just like, yeah, I scan it, I make it,

I make it, I sculpt it, I make it. I
showed him some 3D files I was working

for sort of recreating the cyclones. And
he was like, That's one of the coolest

things we need to build like ten of
those It is the most beautiful

It's one of the prettiest motors I've
ever seen man Damn How long did that

you so far?

I think from start to finish about three
and a half months The cyclones were the

fastest of the day. I mean 120 miles an
hour with no transmission, no brakes, no

clutch. It's just all power to the rear
wheel.

Burning methanol between your legs in a
bicycle chassis.

1914, they made this, and the banjo
didn't even come out until 1919.

So was this just beating out everything
then? How did the banjo end up beating

Cyclone? They got a name, Fast and
Fragile, back in the day. They're

lightweight.

ridiculously fast but there's a lot of
parts on these that were known to fail

maybe there's five six real cyclones out
there that are known today it doesn't

get any more rare than that you know if
you're looking for antique motorcycle

racing history those are it i mean in
less than a year we're all going to be

riding on banjos and cyclones think
about that it's going to be Like, this

the whole thing. I was like, I got this
crazy idea.

Hey, guys, can we do this? And they're
like, yeah, we can do that.

But, like, it's pretty epic to be able
to come into what you, I mean, this is

what you guys do. And just, I can't
believe we're going to go ride, dude.

I am beyond words so honored, so
excited.

I've been wanting to do a board track
race since I was in my early teens.

Like, the final product and the outcome
of seeing, you know,

multiple cyclones together, multiple
banjos, CACs, another DAR.

Yeah, we're not talking about just one
bike. We're talking about all of them.

Yeah, three or four of these in the same
spot. I mean, that hasn't happened

probably ever.

Getting them to ride a cyclone, getting
them to ride a banjo, that's just crazy.

They're only in museums.

You know, that's the only place you're
going to see them.

Cyclone, banjo, CAC, maybe we do some T
-shooters.

Go to Billy's spot.

Race next year.

Yeah?

Why do we have to wait a whole year?
Well, it just depends on you guys.

Because we need a lot of them. But get
them all together, and that'll be my

first time experience.

So I'm pretty excited.

Being able to go race these bikes
together. So it's not just up on the

Like, let's go shoot it. Let's go show
the world, like, what these things did,

what people did.

And let's keep them alive.

This is the Cyclone. They're pretty
unique for their day. These would defeat

pretty much any other motorcycle on the
track if they could stay together.

And the reason that they failed is it
was just overly complicated. The drive

system is all bevel gears.

Everything's paper thin.

Gear teeth would break.

One tooth breaks and it's just a cascade
of destruction inside the case.

There's a couple small concerns with
these bikes mechanically. I mean,

built to run all out, and they're built
like twigs.

They never finished a 100 -mile race on
a Cyclone because they just broke.

Wow. So there's a couple improvements I
made to the original Cyclone design.

So this right here is called a helical
tooth.

Originally, it was just a regular bevel
spline gear, and so that's only engaging

one tooth at a time. And when you have
to stretch the entire valve train on a

tooth that's only a couple millimeters
thick, you're asking for trouble. That's

crazy. It all runs up to that.

Oh, yeah.

And how long did it take you since we
said about how long since you started

making this?

I've been dreaming about building one of
these for a few years, but I just...

Started it maybe six months ago got a
hold of some 3d scans started drawing

new CAD files around the scans had some
friends that had dimensions off the

original and Just we had enough
information to put together The cat

files to make these and with modern

And printing and CAD technology, stuff
that even NASA engineers were drooling

over 10 years ago, you can order on
Amazon for $1 ,000 now.

That's crazy, man. Yeah.

And your passion for it is, you know,
unbelievable, all the things that you

man. Not a lot of people are willing to
just loan out an original cyclone motor

to work with. So most of this was just
taking information from 100 different

sources.

museums, prints.

It's close to starting from scratch,
basically.

You're almost doing an investigation.

So this is what we want to make. That
frame is amazing. You found a frame, a

Redding frame, right?

Yeah. So this bike, there's only one of
one. This is it.

It's the only picture. I don't even know
if this bike exists anymore.

Probably not. Yeah.

So there is a Redding standard. So you
can see right there.

So this is, we're going to put Rome.

I'm going to make a roam one. I'm going
to make the roaming, the roamer.

Putting the stuff back together takes
just unregulated focus.

And it might seem crazy from the
outside, but it's like archaeology.

trying to piece together this puzzle
that's a century old.

Two cyclones and then one running
standard. Well, the roamer.

I've been working on bikes for about 18
years, and it started when I was about

12. I had a handful of friends that were
into dirt bikes.

My old man told me that if I wanted to
ride with them, I had to work for it.

He drug home this 1984 CR250.

This thing was a piece of junk, and he
told me that if I could start it, I

ride it.

I couldn't even reach the pegs, and I
struggled for hours, and I was stubborn.

I asked for help. I had them show me how
it worked, and we spent the next few

weeks pulling it apart.

And the bikes kept getting older and
older.

Just along the way, I've been hitting
swap meets and experimenting with making

my own parts, and it snowballed into a
fairly financially devastating

addiction.

I'm doing what I love. I'm building
engines, building parts from scratch,

pouring the metal.

And it's everything I've wanted to do
since I was a kid, and that just ties

together so cool, being able to make
stuff and then go out and write it and

enjoy it.

First time I saw an antique bike,
Pickers came out when I was in high

and he was dragging an Excelsior carcass
out of a barn. I'm like, that is the

coolest bike I've ever seen.

I went into a Google rabbit hole during
a summer just downloading pictures of

bikes, and I was drafting lawnmower
engines to bicycle carcasses,

trying to make these Ford Track Racer
replicas.

You get more pure and attached to the
originality of these bikes the more you

get into it.

Having a cyclone cylinder head in my
shop, I feel like I want a short

Having three complete cyclones sitting
in my shop, sometimes I just have to

away for a bit because I just want to
sit on the stool and stare at them and

get anything done once you get immersed.

So what we've got here is the gear case
side of the banjo. Like I mentioned, it

comes from the scan software. You bring
it into this software where you can

repair areas that it may have missed.

You go in and you can manipulate this in
here. Oh, you're basically doing Sean's

job for him. Yeah, pretty much. I got
it.

So you go in, you scan it, you do a
shitty poor job at it. I just saw it.

He does a shitty job and you go in and
clean up after all the shit.

Come on in here. Look at this for a
second. So this is the blue area where

did it. It's the obvious.

But he didn't really want to get in. The
yellow parts mean that he didn't do his

job. Yeah.

By doing this, you're costing more money
because he didn't do a good enough job.

That's right.

Got it. I don't think that it would be
feasible to do this project without the

help of everyone involved. You know,
without Matt, you know, access to his

motor, his motorcycle, you know,
competition and their help with, you

being able to scan stuff.

And do you have to go in there and fine
tune anything? Or does it literally come

out? It comes out pretty much. like that
exactly like that yep wow you know they

have a knowledge base of what we're
trying to achieve here so it really

shortcuts the time that it took for us
to do something incredibly difficult uh

like we did last time with the material
and stuff You know, like, where we were

skeptical last time was, like, can you
tell us about, like, the density of the

material of this compared to, like, a
traditional cast pattern? Because that's

something that was, like, hard for us to
kind of grasp with, like, the DAH.

You know, this is aerospace technology.

They use them in, you know, modern car
factories and stuff now, direct -to

-print components, engine components,
all that good stuff.

This is, you know, 99 .8 % dense.

So you doing this is going to save us
not only in time and prototyping,

production, but then also on the back
end of us, like the hours and hours and

hours that we spend machining. It
shortcuts so much of that for us. So us

able to accomplish this sounds like it's
going to be way, way more efficient.

Cool. That's called cheaper, folks at
home.

A lot more cheaper for Jason and Brian.

That means we get to make more fucking
bikes.

We can save money if we get more bikes.

That's all we care about.

I met Nick racing, going to swap meets.

Nick and I have a very similar, like,
idea about how things, you know, should

go. Like, the way we approach things is
really similar.

You know, we bounce a lot of ideas back
and forth to each other.

Working with the DAH project, I guess,
really put it together because we were

a time, COVID and everything, we'd talk
to each other every day.

It was a very involved project.

Luckily, we have, like, what do you
think of this?

Awesome. If I wanted a pink, he'd
probably be like, cool. If I wanted a

he'd be like, yeah, the blues work.

We're both on the same page a lot of
times.

A project like this, if you didn't have
the right team and right partner, would

be an absolute nightmare.

You know, I think Nick and I are
similar, like, in the sense that, you

bike's going to tell you when it wants
to go together.

Yeah, some go together easy and some
fight you the whole way.

The ideal time frame would be years to
get it done, but I think Jay's time

is like a couple months.

I think for me the scariest part is just
really doing it justice.

Making something that will stand the
test of time, will hold up to all the

riding that we're going to be doing.

Jay pushes these machines really hard.

I want to try to make these look exactly
like a replica of an original bike.

There's some differences inherently just
because we're going off of historical

photographs and things like that.

These bikes don't exist.

Even the bike at Wheels Through Time is
a...

kind of one -off example. They were
changing these bikes almost every single

race.

Nick and I, just by doing our thing
with, you know, the modern technology in

2025, we're going to put our spin on it
regardless because how can you

not, you know, just by doing it today,
it's going to be a little different than

what they were doing a hundred plus
years ago.

I think with a project like this, you
have to farm out certain things just to

make it happen at a pace that you need.
So for me, I've mostly focused my

attention toward like building the
frames and the fabrication.

I think both of us are really capable.
Nick, you know, can do pretty much

everything I do and I can do the things
that Nick does. But, you know, Nick is a

really insane engine builder.

I've been working on bikes with, you
know.

teens on their bikes and stuff like that
i guess that's how we all start started

it to you know shovel heads pan heads
and then flip it and buying parts

i didn't have money so i basically want
to swap me pick the part here pick the

part there or i've been tinkering with
bikes since i was 17.

um i built like my first bike in my
mom's garage and then i yeah i started

racing bikes shortly after that

I was a tattooer for 15 years.

And I messed with bikes as kind of my
creative outlet off of my day job.

And then when COVID happened and
everything shut down, I had a lot of

which was motorcycles.

And then once everything opened back up
after COVID, I was so busy doing bikes

that I just really didn't even look back
to go to tattooing.

In no way did I think when I was... you
know, young, getting into motorcycles

that I'd be building the rarest bikes on
planet Earth for Aquaman.

It's pretty crazy.

Look at how beautiful it is.

That is really the prettiest motor,
isn't it?

How do you think the top half thing
goes?

Easily a buck.

You're getting geared right.

Scary. Direct drive, barely any brakes.

Wow. I mean, this is going to be an
amazing V -Storm just side by side.

God, man.

We'll be racing the Harleys.

It's pretty amazing. We set out to make
the kind of the impossible. We're making

banjos, D -A -R -C -A -T.

Come up with based on a picture. We
didn't even know what color it was. Look

that.

This is a Cyclone model R15.

So, at the time, Strand was making three
different bikes.

He had a race bike, a road model, and
something he called the strip stock

It was just basically like a Speedster,
which is the R15. That's what this is

right here? Yeah.

Speedster.

Oof.

So it's still got all the amenities of a
street bike, like clutch, brake,

footboards. Yeah.

It's kind of hot -rodded, strict from
the factory.

You are one of a kind, mister.

There's one of you.

How do you do it?

Some people would call it weaponized
autism.

Oh, my God, bro.

Unbelievable.

Oh my God, dude.

This ain't gonna be fucking terrifying.

I can't wait to line them all up.

I mean, you're doing 100 miles an hour
on a bicycle frame with a 100 % ethanol,

basically a bomb. You're riding on a
bomb and you're going around in circles.

And it's just like, I...

Doing that in the 1920s and pushing the
limits of speed, I've never felt that

experience, and so I wanted to just take
it to the next level.

We're going to end up having three
banjos, a DAR, two CACs now,

the Knuth, which I've never seen one.

You've seen one.

And some 8 -valve stuff.

And some 8 -valve stuff. Oh, yeah, some
8 -valve.

That's a party.

We upped it from first season.

Buckle up.

I think to be able to see all these, you
know, new friends, old friends all come

together over the same goal and, you
know, a couple years of just building

impossible machines and it all coming to
fruition, I think everyone was just

kind of in shock.

can't ride it, I don't even want to sit

We're riding all of them.

For a motorcycle enthusiast, a pretty
prolific moment.

These were our great -grandparents doing
this, and still alive, filling our

souls, and we're bringing it back.

Damn, they had some fun.

It's like going back 120 years, you
know, 110 years.

I mean, it's like, come on.

I mean, these things were relics for
decades, right? And it was just

you looked at and talked about. You
couldn't put your hands on one to save

life. Yeah, I mean, and then now they're
so valuable, nobody's ever going to run

them or ride them. I mean, this is like
the next best thing.

We're going to have three.

Three versus three.

I have got a place where these things
will always be welcome. I do. It's going

to be good.

Every one of them.

Oh, man.

Growing up, I looked up to all these
people, and it's so cool to be able to

connect with these guys.

I don't want to say heroes, but I want
to say heroes because they're absolute

legends, and they're building the
coolest stuff on the planet.

Being able to go back with something as
legendary as a cyclone, it just feels

like a dream.

All right, well, this is kind of like
these next three bikes are about as big

it gets. This is definitely the dream
come true, building these with my

and just having this idea to be able to
make this. So check this out. This is

the banjo. This is the eight valve.

I'm going to race it nickel banjo.

It's a pretty pinch me moment to be able
to have these three together.

friend Tom and Sean had a competition

distribution. They pretty much scanned
everything.

We sent it in.

And these two badasses, Brian and Nick.

That's the baby box. There it is.

And you got those three. That took me,
this is Waxler's moment I saw this. This

is the big inspiration right here.

And this is also just to celebrate
Harley, too, because it's everything

all love him so much. Right now we're
going to go race these bad boys, and

I think it would just be so cool to have
these, like, the trophies of everything

that we've done and all the inspiration
from our old friends, you know what I

mean?

It's the work of art, y 'all.

What we're about to do is probably be
the first time that a series of banjo

racing engines have been on a track in
maybe 100 or more years.

You've taken Harley -Davidson's rarest
racing engine, kind of the pinnacle of

their development from the 20s, and
we're going to put it to the test for

first time in a century.

I'm a little nervous, to be honest with
you. I think it's like a healthy

caution. you know these things uh were
going super fast and doing crazy stuff

back then and it's going to probably be
the same now the thing about these

motorcycles is they were never safe to
begin with you know

Every time I pull up to our racetrack
and I'm going to race a vintage bike

no brakes and no clutch, it's the
biggest rush.

I mean, my heart starts pumping, you
know, my body warms up. I just, you know

what it feels like because you've done
it before, but it's still, it's like

going skydiving, you know, it's like
jumping out of a plane and you don't

what the end result is going to be. You
hope you're safe, you hope everything

ends up well, but you just don't know
it's that kind of a risk.

There's just a handful of humans who
have seen all these bikes together and

working, seeing the Cyclones, seeing all
the different Harleys.

It's just one of a kind. I think
everyone's mind was blown.

It's really, truly an honor because you
have all your friends coming together to

pull off a dream that you want to do,
and within a time frame, and working

the weather and the conditions.

I'm one big queen, nothing can stop me
Red light, red green, I step back, I'm

watching I'm number one, second to no
one No sweat, I'm clean,

but nothing can touch me

Every bike was so different.

Every single one of them was a different
experience.

And I think that's what makes it so
special.

Every motor, the way the frames were
built, everything was just a different

stance, a different feel, a different
growl.

I've never ridden on like a mud track
before.

It gets to this perfect condition where
you can really ride the wall.

It's just such a different feeling.

You can have this like perfect moment.

You're completely aware.

You're just so in the moment.

And you feel everything, like all senses
are firing.

The sounds are like nothing you've ever
heard. The smells, the speed, the way

the bike feels, the way that it feels
the track.

And it's a twist of a throttle, and
you're just bringing life to this wild

animal.

Having the guys, like, when they wet the
track and just, I had never seen

anything like that.

The idea of, like, shooting board track
the way we do it, the way that, you

know, being a part of it, like, getting
the camera in there and be able to

experience that, like, we're riding with
that rider. It was a pretty awesome

experience.

I have to tell you, watching this whole
season, like, it's a freaking weird

thing to say, man. But I watched it, and
I know how hard we put into it, and I

was just, you know, I teared up.

And it's the craziest thing. I'm just
watching motorcycles.

But I teared up because I just know how
many people put in the hard work to make

these motors run for me so that I could
show the world.

And this experience, I would bring all
my friends together.

And it was just the coolest thing, you
know, to see it go from the sun setting

into the night.

And just the spirit of it all, man, I'm
just so thankful.

So thankful.
