We have a new client

she's trying to get

I think there are gonna have
to be compromises,

either on the home itself

She's living with her parents
right now,

and she has two kids.

So I know she wants
to get the kids settled

and in their own routine.

This is gonna be a challenge.

My sons are Ryan and Alex.
They're 11 and 9 years old.

They're, you know,
pretty energetic boys.

Right now, there's been a lot
of transitions for my kids.

You know, all the kind
of stress and, you know,

distress of trying to go
through a divorce, so that's

kind of why I'm probably
a little bit more stressed

and emotional right now.

I feel like we've had a lot of
transitions and moving around.

The kids have kind of had
to live in a lot

of different spaces recently.

We've been staying
with my parents

while we're looking
for another home.

We've been displaced
about six months right now,

so I'm really looking forward
to just getting

into something that we can,
you know, stay

for a long time
and build our lives in.

And then also, yeah, to get
out of my parents' hair

so we're not kind of
in their space the whole time.

I'm grateful I have my parents
to help me out,

but at the end of the day,
you know, everything,

you know, decisions,
all the things for the kids,

that is all on me.

I'd really like to get me
and the kids settled

so we don't feel like

kind of moving, in transition.

We're just really busy.

I'm a single mom trying to work
and take care of the kids,

and I just don't think I have
the bandwidth by myself, uh,

to -- to pull that off.

So that's why I really need

Well, I grew up
in the South Bay, Torrance area,

so I really like
kind of the environment.

It still feels kind of like
a community

and neighborhood feel,
but it's close to everything.

It's close to my parents,
so they can help me out

with the kids after school.

[Marisa] My work is nearby.
The beach is nearby.

we could do to update it

I don't mind red brick,
but the mortar is so dark...

As a mechanical engineer,
what kind of stuff

do you engineer?

I engineer airplanes
and satellites.

Most engineers I know
can really visualize

how something works, you know,

spatial planning,
things like that.

Kind of looking at the flow,
I know my kids come in

after school and usually,
like, garage-sale their stuff

all over the hallway.

So definitely wanna try
to find some storage areas

to put their backpacks.

But I think overall,
I like, you know,

the space in the room.
It feels cozy.

Is there a certain style
that you gravitate towards?

Um, I'm still kind of figuring
that out, but I do want

kind of something updated
but still classic,

something that'll still look
nice in five to ten years.

The more bold you go
on trends...

out of style.

One thing I'm noticing,

when you have this much space
and your furniture's just

all kind of floating around...
-[Marisa] Yeah.

...it just makes it feel
almost more like

college dorm setup.

If you had beautiful built-ins,
all of a sudden, it adds

to the elegance of the space,
but also gives you

that storage you need.
-That would be fantastic.

Yeah, especially with my boys,
I could really use

as much storage as possible.
-I'm actually blown away.

Coming over here,
this is a massive kitchen.

This is a good size.

Yeah, no, I do like
the length of it,

but I do think,
you know, especially

when the kids are
working or playing

their games in the other room,
it'd be nice to kind of have

visibility and access.

You know, right now
my kids are younger

and they share a room.

As they get older, I probably
want to be able to make this

into the third bedroom so
they each have their own space.

But right now I think our needs
are more to have a study area

for the kids that's kind
of dedicated to them.

[Jonathan] We could definitely
fit in two desks and storage.

-[Marisa] At least the room
has options.
-[Jonathan] Yeah.

If we do desks that size,

we could probably get
seven desks in here.

it actually looks

It's a really big front yard,
but kind of a limited space

in the backyard.

Most of your green space

To, you know, I really want
to have kind of grass,

for me to find the home.

I am very ready to move
out of my parents' place.

nice suite, isn't it?

I really like the size
of this bedroom.

That's fantastic.

I like how welcoming
the home feels.

that's kind of cozy

and I can raise my kids in.

You wanna set your roots
again and start

that next chapter and make it
so the kids can thrive.

And I think you could do that
in this house.

The main thing we want is to try
to make this as stress-free

as possible because you've had
enough stress

in your life, honestly.

This house doesn't quite have
the luxury of that.

Her dollar will stretch
further if we take her

outside of this neighborhood.

Marisa is so beyond ready
for a fresh start,

and I don't think
you can really start

that next chapter of your life
unless you start

to have that independence.

from my desired area,
but it is a nice neighborhood.

I think one thing, though,
I'm wondering is, you know,

my kids have a lot of toys
and board games and things

some good storage solutions
for the space.

that is renovated, and a lot

of the heavy-lifting is done,

You could do a really impressive
built-in across here

that gives you a ton
of cabinet space for storage.

I really like the house.

It's a good value.

If you could, like,
pick it up and move it

to another location.

But ultimately, too,

unfortunately, sometimes

is key in being
in a neighborhood

that works for me and the kids
and is convenient to my work

and my family.

As a single mom,
I do rely on my parents a lot.

There's been times after work
where things are running late

and I have to call my dad
to pick them up in time

before the drop-off ends.

I don't wanna make them have
to drive extra a lot

every single day in order
to help me out with the kids.

And like I said, I just,
I don't think I could handle

this much airplane noise.

Yeah, I mean, I've been
looking for a while.

Obviously, it's hard to find

And I do like a lot of things
about that house, so I think

The first step is admitting

"This makes me feel good."

But I don't really know
how to kind of describe

what I want or how

Like, what are we willing to do?

I'm OK with more colors for,

I like this blue color.

[Drew] For a kitchen cabinet,
could be really nice.

[Marisa] You know, I want some
kind of contrasting pieces.

We'll have those natural
wood tones.

We're gonna have some

I do want the sofa.
I'd like a comfy sofa,

just because, you know,
for me and the kids.

We would want something
that's a performance fabric,

because otherwise...

No matter what we do,
it's never gonna change.

And then, right, they seem
to collect so much clutter

so, you know, I could really
use a lot of storage,

like smart storage solutions.

pantry space.

That would be really
important to me.

it's a functional home.

You have the opportunity.

It is a pretty big kitchen
because it's long.

-[Drew] It's just very tight.

We want to make sure that it
feels spacious and stylish

while still giving
that function.

[Jonathan]
We can whitewash the fireplace

to soften up
the brick a little bit,

maybe add some built ins
into the dining room and office

for that storage space you need.

In the kitchen, we'll
widen the entrance

from the dining room and replace
the faux-brick laminate floors.

Opening up a portion
of the galley kitchen will

allow for better sight lines
into the living room,

but we'll keep a small
support post to save on cost.

Three-tone cabinetry
in your preferred palette will

lighten the room,
and a built-in banquette will

utilize the formerly
wasted nook.

On the opposite wall,
eliminating the side door will

allow for a longer run
of uninterrupted cabinetry,

including a spacious
appliance garage.

I would love that.

That's absolutely
everything I need.

-Yeah.

I love that you're,
like, giving us

all this great stuff...

...which makes it easier
for us to do our job.

I want things cohesive,
but I'd like each kind of space

to have its own character
a little bit.

They're related,
but they're not twins.

any time transforming

this dated galley kitchen.

The original cabinets
still have a little life left,

so the ones that can be
salvaged will be donated.

And then it's on to widening

the entry between the kitchen
and the dining room

to capitalize on the natural
light from the back doors.

[Jonathan]
One of the first things
Marisa said in this house,

she's like, "I wish there was
a way to open it up

a little bit more."
And I knew from her budget

we would not be able
to open it up completely.

The plan was to open
all of this area.

We can open it.
It's three feet, six inches.

So it's all the way to here.

I can open, and here is going
to be a post in the middle.

So it would basically just be
like a pass-through window.

I think that's great.

You have the budget.

Yeah, I mean, we could put
a massive steel beam in here.

We could open things up,
no problem.

But she doesn't have
that budget.

It's gonna be a little tiny
four-inch-by-four-inch post,

and we'll make it look good.

Oh, yeah,
this is gonna be great.

The downside of opening up
a wall is you lose that surface

for hanging cabinets.

And I know that Marisa already
has said, like, 50 times,

"Storage is really,
really important."

So we're closing off
this side door

to gain more wall space
for cabinetry.

I think this is a nice
compromise, and the fact

that Marisa is open to stuff
like that shows that she really

genuinely is trying to think
of, "How can I make this place

function best for my family?"

Front door is right there.

Backyard access is right here.

It is so much better closing
this off to have the opportunity

for continuous cabinetry
or your fridge.

like we were very settled.

So to have that home base

How do you feel now when
you see the way it's laid out?

No, it looks really pretty,

I like all the colors
in the space.

feeling that I was looking for.

wouldn't have been able to
figure out what the heck to do

I'm glad we can utilize

But having it built in just

There are so many positives
that weren't here before.

dated, and I just really wanted

to update it
and have a nice space

that we could love and enjoy.

And I think you guys really
kind of hit that.

This kitchen now,
it's a lot more functional.

My old house,
we had to stash all my stuff

in the hall closet.

So this is nice to have

"It's a galley kitchen,

there's nothing we can do,"
and this proves them wrong.

And that little section being
opened up changes everything.

Yeah, kind of opening things up

so it doesn't feel so narrow.

Just that little opening
all of a sudden makes it feel.

Yeah, and I feel like it kind
of, almost as an engineer,

it kind of squares off the room
a little bit more,

which is nice.

But it's just nice to be able

to open up into the living room.

Especially if I'm working

we're looking for, right?

[Drew] This could be the largest
dining room buffet we've

ever installed.

Yeah, also stash my dishes
and the kids' toys.

dining table, the open flow.

[Jonathan] I like how everything
sort of feels connected.

Your living area as well
is super comfortable.

You'll notice we toned down
the brick a little bit,

just to make it feel a little
more aesthetically pleasing.

My hope is that the kids will
