...this is peak season
for the police.

Go. Go, go, go, go, go!

- It's a canny view, innit?
- Mm-hm.

Today, for officers in Bermuda,

a high-speed chase of a stolen bike.

Go right in front of him
when you get a chance.

Go right in front of him
and block him off.

An elusive rule breaker
on the loose.

He might've seen one
and just decided to...

So, the bike's gone, too?

...decided to dip, yeah.

And a possible SOS on the water.

Oh, wait a minute, Tyler.

Somebody's flagging us down.

Yeah, yeah, over there.

We're just going to do a little
mobile patrol around the city,

just check out some of
our targeted areas

that we like to
pay extra attention to.

And just, yeah,
just a routine sort of patrol.

Police constable James Adams
is a relative rookie in the police.

I've been in the police service now
for a short while.

I'm still brand-new.

Some would say that the ink is
still wet on my warrant card.

About 2.5 years now.

He's partnered with experienced
police constable Jonathan Flood.

They're both Bermudians,
and want to keep their island safe.

Yeah, I enjoy it.

Obviously, I've got skin in
the game. You know, I live...

We both do, we live here,
we've got houses here.

So, we want to see our island
do well.

I am protective of Bermuda, and I
want to make sure that, you know,

Bermuda stays a safe place to be,
to live, to visit,

and to have families, and to grow.

In keeping Bermuda safe,
there's much for the police to do.

It's just like a city.

Any major city out in the States,
we've got all the same stuff -

your petty crimes, your shoplifting,

your basic thefts.

Then you've got
your more serious crimes,

which is your organised stuff.

You've got, you know, drug dealing.

You do have...

You know, anybody that reads
the news is going to see that

we do have murders, we do have
shootings, we do have stabbings,

just on a much smaller scale.

Thankfully, a much smaller scale.

Officers James and Jonathan are
targeting known crime hot spots

in the centre of the island.

There's been some thefts
in the area of motorcycles,

and they've been stashing them
behind this old, abandoned church.

So, we've been putting a little
pressure around here,

showing a police presence.

You never know what you might
encounter, or who you might find.

So, you're on edge a bit, and
you're keeping your wits about you.

And these kids snuck up on me and
just kind of caught me off guard.

Hey, what's up man? How are you?

How are you? You all right?

Good, buddy.

We're just doing
a little patrol of the area, man.

We're just checking out the church.

Sometimes we just pay extra
attention to places,

just to make sure everything's OK.

Kind of very suddenly,
these young kids came up to me.

How you guys doing? You all right?

What you up to?

Nothing much? Just chilling?

To turn round and see them,
and it just instantly makes you

feel lighter,
it makes you feel happier.

It kind of takes you out of that
intensity for a moment.

Police cards?
I think I do have some in the car.

- Let me check for you, yeah?
- What's going on, fellas?

Yeah, I'll see
what I've got in the car, man.

The kids are keen to get
their hands on some sports cards -

a recent police initiative to build
bridges with young locals.

Here you go.

There's a couple extra in there,
OK, kids?

So, that way you can trade them
with others, all right?

So, we have, like,
just local Bermudian athletes.

So, we have some of, like,
kind of the new-school athletes,

the up-and-coming.
We have past legends, as well.

- So, if you're missing...
- How many cards you got, then?

Which ones you don't have?

I think the goal is to try
and collect them all, and then...

And I believe there's some prizes
associated with that,

once the kids collect them all.

So, yeah, they actually have become
really, really popular, yeah.

So, more of the runner, yeah?

For me, that means a lot,
that's a huge part of the job,

especially for our young kids
to know that they can approach

police officers and
have a friendly interaction,

and that we're not to be feared.

Those superstar cards are
a great way for that to be a thing.

And that was really, really cool.
A special moment, for sure.

All right, you guys,

Officers James and Jonathan
continue their patrol...

...with an important advantage.

Few criminals can see them coming.

This is an unmarked police vehicle.

Just kind of gives you just
an added element of surprise.

Suddenly, their shift
starts to heat up.

We were heading back in
towards the city,

and we saw this motorcycle
with two people on it,

in very baggy clothing,
helmets, dark visors.

That looked a bit odd.

Two up, wearing all dark clothing.

I mean, in this heat,
if you're wearing black sweats,

black hoodie, erm...

You know, it just twings
the alarm bells.

In 83 degree temperature with,
like, 100% humidity,

it is so out of place.

It just doesn't fit.

And it is going to get you
noticed like that.

The officers attempt
to catch up with the bike,

which seems to have
given them the slip.

When we initially lost sight
of them, I was able to capture

the plate first,
visually capture the plate,

the registration of the plate,
and run that through the system.

The results confirm their hunch -

the bike's stolen.

It's a stolen bike.

Ah.

- See? It's just...
- Shoot.
- You know?

Yeah, it's a stolen bike.

Let's see if we can
catch up to them.

I am like a dog with a bone.

Once I feel like I can sink my teeth
into something,

I will not let it go.

I will see it through to the end.

And it's coming back stolen
in island.

We're going to try and put a stop
on it on Cox's Hill.

The chase is on.

On the other side of the island,
at the cruise ship terminal,

another patrol is enjoying
a more relaxed time.

The attractions here
are all part of the beat

for Geordie police constable
Adam Thompson

and his partner, police constable
Melissa Butler.

I think the majority of the people
that will come here

- will be tourists, right?
- Yeah, from the cruise ships.

- Uh-huh.
- Yeah.

If you've got two cruise ships
here at one time,

there can be anywhere between eight
and nine thousand people extra.

You go there in the summer,
and it's just buzzing,

the place is absolutely buzzing.

It does mean that crime can go up
a little bit, you know.

But, yeah, it's good. I enjoy it.

Officer Adam has been in Bermuda
for more than a decade.

I think a lot of the local community
usually come down here

at night times.

I haven't been here in a few years.

But Monday nights used to be
the place to be,

used to be a great night out here.

He was a chef when he first came
to the island.

I worked a few places in Europe.

I worked in Greece and Italy
for a while.

Then when I was 21,
I found Bermuda on the map,

and then I've been here ever since.

So, yeah, really enjoying it, man.

He joined the police
over a year ago,

but still misses some of the perks
of his old career.

Free food, of course, man, yeah.

Costs an absolute fortune!

I'm used to eating oysters,
octopus three times a week,

steaks whenever I like.

But, yeah, I'm a police officer now,

so I don't think I get that
privilege any more,

so that's probably one thing
I will miss from hospitality.

How many people you reckon
was in there?

I would just say that
it's a normal optical crowd.

- All right, OK.
- Yeah.

Foot patrol conducted of
the Snorkel Park area.

Everything appears to be 10-4.

Despite his long time on the island,

Officer Adam is still
unmistakably a Geordie.

Just having a quick check
of Horseshoe Bay,

just to make sure everything's
all right.

So, as you can tell,
I've got a strong Geordie accent.

So, there's obviously different
phrases in the Geordie dictionary,

as we like to call it,
one of them being "canny",

which I use quite a lot.

There you go, man. Look at that.

It's a canny view, innit?

Mm-hm.

I think Bermuda's canny.

Yeah, Bermuda's a canny place
to live. It is, yeah!

It's my favourite thing
about living in Bermuda.

Water, beaches, sunshine.

It can't get any more beautiful
than here.

Coastguard Mel Gauntlett is
Bermudian-born and bred.

The ocean is all around us,
and as a Bermudian,

it's just a natural part of life
here.

I really am, basically, a mermaid.

Actually, I think
I'm more like a siren.

Mermaids are cute and fluffy.

I'm a little bit dangerous.

Mum of two, coastguard Mel has been
working the water here

for four years.

My daughters call this
my super suit.

And when they were little,

they asked me how many bad guys
I caught on a daily basis.

And I love that
they think that of me.

Today, she's patrolling Bermuda's
more than 70 miles of coastline

with Colour Sergeant Tyler Smith.

Barely any clouds and no wind.

It's going to be a scorcher one.

Whoo.

We're looking out for
fisheries violations,

people who just aren't obeying the
rules when it comes to the water.

We also handle search and rescue
missions,

as well as any boaters in distress.

We want to make sure that everyone
comes home at the end of the day.

With temperatures well above
30 degrees,

the locals know that the best place
to cool off is the water.

We're at Admiralty House,

a very popular spot for
cliff jumping.

Different levels and everything
into deeper water,

and then climb through the
cave system to get back up top.

It's like a Bermudian
rite of passage.

That's where I learned how to swim.

Yeah, I wasn't brave enough
to jump off those things.

But for those lacking a head for
heights, like coastguard Mel,

there is an alternative.

Dock jumping is another popular
one. They like to do tricks.

Love of being outside and
in the water starts early here.

The water is also a way to cool off
for the thousands of tourists here,

with plenty of boats keeping
coastguard Mel busy.

Hello!

Sorry to disturb you.

But just so you know, you need to go
a lot slower through here.

Just it's a five-knot,
no wave zone in here.

You guys were just going
a little bit fast.

On hot and busy days like this,
coastguards Mel and Tyler

must have eagle eyes for anyone
getting into trouble.

Oh, wait a minute, Tyler.

Somebody's flagging us down,

but I don't know
if it's an emergency.

Waving at us?

There's someone waving us down,

so we're just trying to see
if everything's all right.

When we see somebody who is
in distress,

you're constantly
assessing the situation.

You're assessing the environment.

How can I get to that person?

What's wrong with that person?

He did the international
I-am-not-OK wave.

A signal for distress could mean
a life-saving rescue.

You never know what you're dealing
with until you arrive on the scene.

Officers Jonathan and James
are in an unmarked car,

chasing two people
on a stolen motorbike

they lost sight of earlier.

Is that them, there?

They get eyes on the bike again.

With rookie officer James behind
the wheel, they move in.

Do not, yeah.
Do not activate until you get close.

Floody, being in the passenger seat,
takes complete control.

we're going to pull up quickly

"but silently. We're not going
to activate the sirens.

and just get as close as we can."

I do trust his judgment.

is cos that bike's
coming back stolen, yes?

The suspects are complaining about
the forceful nature of the stop.

Yeah. No, I pulled you off the bike,

because most of the time,
you guys try to run on these bikes.

You still have to be very fast,
you have to be dynamic,

and you've got to get out of that
vehicle and get hands on

those suspects and detain them
as quickly as possible.

We were aggressive within reason,
using the necessary force

to ensure their safety,
as well as our own.

So, unless it's...
Well, I don't know you from Adam.

You guys were trying to slip through
the gap. Come on, now.

- Come on, now.
- Eh?!

- Hey, hey, hey, hey.
Settle down, yeah?
- Just relax.

Your first use of force,
as an officer, is your presence.

The second use of force
is your commands.

If you can shut down
an entire scenario or incident

with just your presence
and verbals, that's a win.

So, hey, fellas, pay attention.

So, this bike is coming back stolen.

So, you're both under arrest
for suspicion of TWOC,

which is taking a vehicle
without owner's consent, OK?

So, you're both getting locked up

- at the present moment in time, yeah?

Dominate that situation
right off the bat,

and that's when you can start
looking at bringing

the incident down.

I'm just going to check
your waistband,

make sure you don't have any knives
or anything on you, OK?

There are no weapons found.

Only headgear that is not
the usual Bermudian bike fashion.

I know, but...

You guys do foolish stuff
that attracts

The suspects are taken into custody,

and the bike to the pound.

This one's so excited to go.

So, he's actually the rider,
so he can go first.

- OK.
- All right, my brother.

It's a good stop.
It's just what policing is.

This is just, you know,
basic 101 policing.

Getting out on the ground, spotting
things that don't look right,

spotting offences.

And putting the stop in,
and catching people,

and getting people's property
back to them.

So, it's a win.

A win tinged with a bit of relief
for officer Jonathan.

I 100% thought that they were going
to ditch that bike and leg it.

I am very happy that
I did not have to run very far.

Running in that heat,
with all that kit,

at 38, uphill?

I'd have got about 100m in me,
and that's it.

On the other side of the island,

Geordie officer Adam
is continuing his patrol

of Bermuda's tourist hot spots.

so it's always good to have a bit
of craic with them.

On his way to the next tourist stop,

Officer Adam spies some
dangerous behaviour on the road.

We were travelling west along
Horseshoe Road,

and we've seen
a gentleman cut up through the field

and turn into this junction here,
and he didn't have a helmet on.

We literally had an accident
yesterday up west,

where a gentleman was driving with
no helmet on, and he's hit then.

He's still in hospital
at the moment.

So, it's something
we've got to take seriously.

But finding the man will take
all their detective skills.

- Where's he gone?

Has he just drove off?

Maybe around the back here.

Where did he go to?

I'm coming, I'm coming.

Yeah, we're just trying to locate
where that gentleman actually went.

Butler did see him, said she seen
him driving up this road,

and then turn left.

this 70-year-old bloke,

and he's just disappeared so fast.

We've just been driving up,
and seen you driving down the road

with nay helmet on.

Like, whereabouts

the field there, right?

Cos my partner's just going to have
to write you a MAN form,

because we did witness the offence.

It's not a ticket or anything
at this time,

but it's a MAN form.

just to say that we have seen it,

So, this is one of our colleagues.

He's not in trouble.

He's just out enjoying his day off.

So, in general, if you want to say
hi to somebody on the water,

it's a, hey,
or just a little wave.

But if I see someone doing this...

...that's like the international sign
for "I'm not OK,"

and I'm going to stop and make sure
that you're all right.

- Huh?

We thought...
We thought somebody was in trouble.

Really?

Luckily, in Bermuda, there are
plenty of opportunities to de-stress

from tense moments with colleagues.

Welcome to The Vixen.

This is actually protected
fishing grounds.

You cannot fish
within 200m of this wreck.

It's been there since I was a kid.

It used to stick out of the water
a lot more,

but as the hull has degraded,
it's kind of sunk.

And it's become a bit of
a tourist phenomenon.

There's a healthy school of fish,
some beautiful coral reefs.

It's always just been
a beautiful, iconic location

in the west end of the island.

These fish are extremely smart.

You can put a line off the back of
a boat and try and bait them out.

As soon as they hit that 200m mark,
they don't go any further.

It's incredible.

I'm pretty sure that
old wives' tale of a goldfish

only have a brain span
of three seconds is false -

because of those fish at The Vixen.

It's a pretty cool spot.

Very dreamy.

I mean, honestly, it doesn't get
any better than this, does it?

But soon, coastguards Mel and
Tyler's attention is diverted

to some dangerous driving
on the water.

We just came through the bridge,
and it's trafficked

by a stop light system,
and the one behind him...

So, it's a green light now, and they
were coming through the bridge,

so they must've gone through
the bridge while it was a red light.

If two boats meet under that bridge,

there's no way to avoid an accident.

Did you know that
there was a red light

when you came through the bridge?

Just making sure
you know the red light.

Good afternoon, everybody.

It's supposed to be on your
starboard side, just for next time.

Hi, everybody.

Officers Jonathan and James
are escorting into custody

the stolen bike suspects.

We're definitely noticing
and up-kick in vehicle theft.

Some are crimes of opportunity.

People still leave their keys
in the vehicle,

whether they're fuelling or
just making a stop,

kids will jump on the bike and go.

Or it can be a bit more organised -

stealing them, hotwiring them,
and using them for other crimes.

I believe, to date,
we have over 300 stolen.

That's the reported ones, anyway.

So, that is a lot of bikes.

Just come in and have a seat on
this side right there, young man.

Stop all the giggling.

I need your names and
I need your date of births.

No, he's... He's given me his stuff.

The officers learn that
the bike thief suspects

are younger than the usual,
aged only 16 and 15.

You're good.
DEVICE BEEPS

Once we were able to get the helmets
off and, you know,

reveal their identities,

you could physically see
that they were young kids.

Was I shocked? Not entirely.

But it was still surprising to have
kids as young as this

on a stolen bike.

It was a bit of a moment of, like,
"Wow, they're only kids."

They're going to be booked in.

But before that can even begin,
right now, our custody sergeant

is making the phone calls
to appropriate adults,

because they're both minors.

So, nothing can happen right now

until they're in the company
of their appropriate adults.

The rider does seem to have a bit
more of a devil-may-care attitude,

and that might plague him
as he grows a little bit older.

The pillion passenger has got
a much better outlook and attitude,

and he's a much more
switched on young man,

and aware on the direction that
he is potentially heading down.

The officers also learn that this
stolen bike crime was opportunistic.

Just so that you're aware, it was
stolen as of the 8th of this month.

So, it was a good pick.

And you know how sometimes
it's like keys in the bike?

- Yeah, yeah.
- Well, the owner left
the keys in the ignition.
- Oh, OK.

So that explains why it's there.

- OK.
- So, it's probably just
a crime of opportunity.

- Oh, OK, right.
- The bike will be
returned to the owner,

and the culprits fined for riding
a bike without a licence

and being underage,

with stolen bike charges pending.

We got lucky,
and we saw them straight ahead.

And it kind of was actually to
our advantage that they turned off

on the side road.
I had Floody here in my ear

kind of guiding me along, and...

- Not bossing you, but just...
- No, no, not bossing me, no.

- Just, uh, gently edging me along.
- CHUCKLING

But, no, it was much needed
advice and guidance.

And it worked out to be
a pretty good stop, yeah.

Really good stop. Happy with that.

- Nice job.
- Yeah. Thank you, man.

Appreciate it. Good stuff.

Officer James may be
a relative newbie in the police,

but he's progressing quickly.

It's great to have
an experienced partner.

As I said, I'm new in service,
about 2.5 years

versus your eight, is it?

So, I really appreciated the fact
that he was very vocal.

That was really, really well done,
and I'm quite pleased with that.

And I'm very grateful to you
for just, again,

providing the instruction and
the clarity of what's what.

What I like about this job is being
able to depend on each other,

and that camaraderie
and that teamwork.

And, for me, that's just, you know,
that's why I like this job.

I love this job, actually.
