- It's a canny view, innit?

- Today in Bermuda, a big, organised
crime bust...

- You are being placed under arrest
for the suspicion

of conspiracy to import drugs into
Bermuda, all right?

- ..that leads to a high-pressure
deadline.

- The clock is ticking.

- And an elusive person of interest.

- At the moment, he's not here. I just
tried to call him back,

but now it's just going to voicemail,

so we're still trying to locate him.

- Every year, around half a million
people visit Bermuda,

mainly via cruise ships from the US,

presenting certain challenges to the
authorities.

- Anywhere where you've got people and
things coming into Bermuda,

there's an opportunity to import,
let's say drugs.

Our ports of entry need to be secured.

- The police work closely with customs
to tackle drug smuggling.

Recently, a new and very potent Class
A drug

has arrived on Bermuda shores.

- We had a seizure of carfentanyl

which is, you know, you've got
fentanyl

and then you've got carfentanyl.

It's a real serious drug, and there
was a sizeable amount of it

that was seized, so that's pretty
worrisome.

- Detective Constable Damon Hollis,

and Detective Sergeant Zoenique
Williams

were involved in that seizure of
carfentanyl,

a substance developed as an elephant
tranquillizer

and unsuitable for humans,

has become the latest illegal drug
trend in the US,

with a seven-fold rise in fatalities
in recent years.

- Carfentanyl, which is 100 times more
potent than fentanyl,

which is 1,000 times more potent than
heroin.

- Two American nationals were arrested

for conspiracy to import a controlled
drug.

I mean, they were charged and
subsequently remanded.

- An accomplice of theirs was
identified in the US

as part of the investigation.

Law enforcement there has just alerted
the drug squad

that the accomplice is currently on a
ship bound for Bermuda.

Detectives Damon and Zoenique are
going to arrest him.

- He'll be arriving today on the
cruise ship,

which will be berthed at Heritage
Wharf at eight o'clock,

so we're heading up to dockyard for
that.

- Meanwhile, in the west of the
island,

a shift that's starting a little more
gently...

- So, whereabouts are we going for
this summons?

- Er, in town, Rosemont Avenue.

- OK, cool.

Perfect. Perfect, perfect.

So, we'll head there then.
- Cool.

- ..with Brit police constables Jen
Suter and Rachel Benedict.

- I really enjoy working with Jen.

She's great fun.

She's been fantastic to learn from.

- Officer Rachel has served in the
police for only 18 months.

- Working with Jen doesn't really feel
like work, it just feels like,

"Oh, this is great, we're being paid
to be with our friends."

- She's always been attracted to
careers

that showcase her people skills.

- Most recently, I worked in the NHS.

I worked as a Cancer Pathway Manager.

I'm also a trained dental nurse,

and I used to run a pub back in the
day.

- They're serving a summons to a woman
who has a case

to answer in court for a road traffic
accident.

- Delivering a summons is important
because it's a record for us

and for that person, the fact that
they've been summoned to court.

People don't turn up and they've
signed to say

that they've received it,

then further action can be taken.

- RADIO:

- En route to the address of the
summons case,

they're diverted to a more urgent
call-out.

They run lights and sirens to get
quickly to the location

of a missing mobile phone.

- We just had a call through to say
that a lady

whose estranged boyfriend has taken
her phone last night,

but because it was her work phone,

it's been tracked to a location which
we're just heading to now.

So, we're going to head to Turtle Hill
Golf Club,

and just see if we can track down the
phone.

- In the small island culture of
Bermuda,

getting back the phone is a policing
priority.

- I do get the sense that the police
are called to help

in situations here that perhaps
wouldn't maybe

even be entertained in the UK.

Is she looking to have her phone
returned,

or is she looking to prosecute him?

- She's looking to have the phone
returned as it's not hers,

it belongs to her job.

- But Bermuda is so community focused

that, actually, it does work in our
favour.

And you never know, things can
escalate,

so it could be a small job that then
turns into something a lot more.

Usually, they would tell us

if someone's known to be violent,

or if they're known to carry knives or
anything like that,

so at the moment, we don't have any
information to suggest

that things will go sideways.

- They arrive at the golf club...

..at the same time as another patrol
car sent by the control room

to provide backup should

the estranged boyfriend become
difficult.

- Hi, guys, you all right?
- Our lovely other officers here.

- Hiya.
- Thank you for joining us.

- We're just going to go inside to see
if he's working,

the gentleman that potentially has the
phone.

She doesn't want to prosecute,

so it'll be a case of us just
retrieving the phone.

- We were aware that this particular
location was their job.

It was just about going in,
approaching it

in a sensitive manner, but als...

Obviously, trying to get the outcome
of getting the phone back.

- They know the department the man
works in, but finding him

and the phone is easier said than
done.

- I don't know what his role is.

- I can try and call my golf director
real quickly.

I know he's on the property.

- This golf course is on, like, a
really big property.

It's a part of the Southampton
Princess Hotel,

so we weren't sure whether it's
specific to here,

or whether it could even be over that
side as well,

so we're just trying to find out at
the moment.

- Failing that, we do have a telephone
number for him.

- Oh, yeah, we do. Give him a call.
- But...

- A number for the man comes through
on the radio,

so they ask the man to come to them.

- Hi, this is Police Constable Suter

calling from Somerset Police Station.

Hi, I'm actually calling in relation
to a cellphone

that's believed to have gone missing.

Right.

Oh, OK. Are you here now for us to
speak to you?

Cos we're actually here now.

OK. OK.

Could you come and meet us at the golf
club?

OK, perfect. All right, thank you.

- The man says he will come to them
straight away.

- Whisky 6 to Whisky 3, we've made
contact with him,

he's going to meet us downstairs at
the golf club.

- It'll be a case of having a
conversation with him.

If he does have the phone, he can then
give it to us

who then...we can then return it.

- But only if the man shows.

- Oh, it's hot.

- Let's get in the shade.

- Detectives Damon and Zoenique are
heading to a cruise ship

to arrest a man just arrived from the
US suspected of belonging

to a gang smuggling the deadly drug
carfentanyl into Bermuda.

Customs are instituting passport
checks

for those leaving the ship

as a ruse to identify the suspect.

- Yes, it's all done.

- INDISTINCT COMMENT

- We didn't anticipate that it would
be so quickly.

The cruise ship was there for, I...I
believe,

they got there Wednesday and they
weren't going to leave until Friday,

so the subject didn't necessarily have
to come off the boat that day.

The doors opened and they were
arrested at 08.15,

so that's how quick it was.

Yes, suspicion. Suspicion.

So, you're being arrested on suspicion
of conspiracy to import...

Yes. Under suspicion.

Yes, we believe, that is our belief

that you are a co-conspirator,

so with that, you are being placed

- The man insists that he's carrying

of him and his rucksack

uncovers items that, to the drug squad
officers,

are just as concerning...

- The cash is in the wallet, but in
here is jewellery.

- ..tens of thousands of dollars'
worth of watches and jewellery.

- Often, drug gangs use high value
items

to transfer their money across borders
instead of cash

to avoid attracting law enforcement
attention.

- So, now that's watches, that's
jewellery,

that's anything that carries a high
value,

that can hold value in Bermuda and
elsewhere anywhere in the world.

- The fact the man was carrying so
many expensive items

might be a sign that he's no lowly
drugs mule.

- Done already. We'll be in and out
soon.

- Instead, he might be a much bigger
fish

and is suspected of transporting

some of the drug gangs' assets into
Bermuda.

- Many times, we, unfortunately, just
get the mule.

But this is a case where we've
identified somebody

who may possibly be higher up on their
chain.

So, it's very important that we get to
this level and even levels above.

- They will need to gather as much
evidence as possible

to be able to charge the suspect.

Officers Jen and Rachel are on the
hunt for a missing phone.

They've tracked it down to a golf
club,

the place of employment of the
complainant's estranged boyfriend.

- It was a work phone as well,

so that could've been sensitive
information in regards to her job.

- He has agreed to meet them at the
golf shop on site.

- Yeah, he's not answering now.

- He's what?
- Not answering.
- Oh, really?
- Yeah.

- But it seems he's a no-show.

- At the moment, he's not here. I just
tried calling him back,

but now it's just going to voicemail,

so we're still trying to locate him.

- The hunt for the man and the missing
phone is back in full swing.

- And it's just the one route round to
the hotel?
- Yeah.

I just spoke to him, he said he was
working here.

He was supposed to meet us up at
Turtle Hill Golf Club, but he's...

He is expecting us to be here,

but it's been about 15 minutes and
he's not come up,

so I don't know whether he's...

- Would you be able to keep an eye?

- Yeah.
- All right, see you.

- I felt confident that he would come
and meet us.

Erm, I don't know. Obviously, for him,
it was a guilty conscience.

So, he's just not answering?

- No.
- Hmm.

I think I realised he was ghosting me

when I tried calling him back and he
didn't answer.

I mean, whoever's done something
wrong,

no-one wants to have interactions with
police,

so being ghosted isn't...

It is...is normal.

Hurts the ego.

No, I'm joking.

- With the man playing hard to get,
officers Jen and Rachel decide

to go to him at the department where
he's supposedly based.

- We could always take a drive down.

- Yeah.
- Yeah.
- And do that.
- Yeah.

We'll take a drive down as well.
- Yep.

- It did feel like a wild goose chase
at points and I must admit,

I was a bit, like, "Well, what are
we... What are we doing?"

- We have got a picture of him,

so we'll go and see if we can spot him
on the way down.

We can always take a drive back up

and see if he's turned up here while
we're not here.

We did feel a little bit like we were,

sort of, like, just looking around to
maybe try and find a phone.

- I can't see it being him.

No luck?

- Perhaps the police alerting the man
to their presence has caused him

to flee with the missing phone.

- I bet he's not even on the property.

- One of the most common problems that
the police face in high season

are traffic accidents involving
tourists on motorcycles.

Brit police constable Jonathan Wood

and partner police constable Shane
Granville are responding

to one in capital city, Hamilton.

- I believe that there's no injuries
with any of the parties involved.

- At the scene, the immediate priority
is to confirm this.

- You'd fallen to the ground, then?

OK, do you need an ambulance to check
you over or...?

Are you sure? OK, all right, no
problem.

- The woman has no significant
injuries.

- Is she injured at all or no?

- Very minor, she doesn't want an
ambulance,

but she has got some bumps and
bruises.

Gone over the bonnet slightly, so...
- Oh, OK.

- Now officers Woody and Shane need to
find out exactly what happened.

- You said what?

They... She just lost control coming
out of there?

- Should the crash have been caused

by an offence such as dangerous
driving?

- How...how did happen exactly? What
happened?

Down the hill?

Right. Were your brakes OK?

You just went a bit too quick or...?

- The collision was between an elderly
local in a car,

and an American tourist on a bike,

accompanied by her family.

- Is it... Has it got any damage on
the bike, or is it just...?

Oh, right, OK.

- It's actually pretty hardy.

- The lady came down this street right
here.

Too much speed, lost control,

then collided with this gentleman who
was heading into the city.

Luckily, thankfully, no injuries, you
know,

everybody walks away, that's the best
result.

- The tourist has accepted
responsibility for the collision...

- So, you're happy that it's not the
other guy's fault?

That's what I'm saying. Yep, OK.

- ..which means, for Officer Woody,
there is

no criminal matter to investigate, and
the situation can be resolved.

- And the incident number that relates
to it is in the corner there.

So, we've spoken to both parties.

The lady on the bike has accepted the
liability for the collision.

We're not going to compound that by
looking to give her a fine.

We're happy for everyone to just
exchange details

and the insurance companies can take
it forward.

- Sadly, such road crashes involving
tourists have become

a summer tradition in Bermuda.

- It's peak tourist season,

6,000 tourists plus getting off-loaded
from cruise ships

in Dockyard, they all want cycles, all
want freedom.

- Are you not used to riding these?
You haven't...

Right.

Yep.

But a long time ago.

- The roads are just inundated with
inexperienced riders,

elderly riders, young riders.

It's just something we've had to deal
with, so -

it's just part of Bermuda life,
unfortunately.

- Now, the challenge is sending the
American tourist

and her family safely on their way.

- Just help her turn, just help her
turn, Shane.

- What's going on? Which way are you
guys trying to go?

- That way.

- We're just going to stop the
traffic, then,

and make it easier for you to get
across

so we don't have another accident, all
right?

- Yeah.
- All right, no worries.

- As well as racing to catch
criminals,

Detective Zoenique used to have a
high-speed career in sport.

- I went to some Caribbean cycling
championships for Bermuda,

and then I went to Pan Am Games for
Bermuda.

I used to cycle for Bermuda, elite
cyclist,

so I've competed in two Caribbean
championships.

I was the chef de mission,

which is like, the team manager for
the Youth Olympic Games.

But sometimes, I think to myself,

"Why was I climbing those hills? And
what for?" You know?!

- She's arrested, with Detective
Damon,

a man suspected to be involved in the
cartel trafficking

the deadly drug carfentanyl.

- One of the most dangerous drugs on
the market today.

It's a killer and it's killed people
all around the world,

so that, in a small community like
Bermuda, can be very detrimental.

- With thousands of dollars' worth of
watches and jewellery on him,

the police believe their suspect is

not at the bottom of the drug
smuggling chain.

- To identify that person and make
that arrest was very significant.

- The suspect has been transported to
custody at Hamilton Police Station.

Before the drug squad interview him,

they must arm themselves with all the
evidence they can.

- Now we have to go onboard, to his
cabin,

to look for any further evidence

that may assist us in the
investigation.

- And then remove his belongings off
of the boat

because cos he's not going back.

- The American is a foreign national,
so under Bermudian law,

the police are only allowed 48 hours
to charge or release him.

- The minute that gentleman comes into
custody, our custody clock starts.

- First up is searching his cabin.

- We have to get all these items of
evidential value

to the original case out of the way in
order to speak to him.

Hopefully not too much work, but, yes,
now it's...

To get on board, liaise with ship
security,

search the cabin and then we move from
there.

- Ship security takes the drug squad
officers to the suspect's quarters.

- Morning.

- So, coming on, everybody's bag is
X-rayed?

- No mattress is left unturned in
their search of his cabin

for evidence of any criminal activity.

They recover a large bag full of the
suspects possessions

to be searched properly back at the
station.

- The investigation continues.

- Detectives Damon and Zoenique are
optimistic.

They're putting together a case to
bring down a serious drug gang

that's wrecking lives in Bermuda.

- The rule of thumb is, we have to be
lucky one day,

they have to be lucky every day.

So, you know, it only takes one
opportunity for us

to ruin everything that they built

because eventually, one day, we're
coming.

- With only 36 hours left to either
charge or release the suspect...

..they must urgently search the rest
of his belongings

to find any evidence they can of
criminal activity.

- The clock is ticking.

- Officers Jen and Rachel are on the
hunt for a man with a missing phone

at the golf course where he works.

- Here we go, fabulous.
- OK.

- But he's given them the slip and is
nowhere to be seen on site...

- Whisky 6, 10-5.

- ..when they get a call from the
police control room with an update.

- Yeah, you hear that?

We just received an update from our
police operations just to say

that actually the gentleman has
dropped off the phone

back at the complainant's house,

so all is well and there's nothing for
us to do.

- With the complainant not wanting to
prosecute,

and so no arrest to be made,

the matter is now resolved.

- Within the time of us having that
phone call with him,

he'd gone off and given the phone
back.

It is a bit of a waste of time, he
could've just told us,

"I'm going to give the phone back," or
he could've just...

He could've just given the phone to us
up the hill.

Hopefully, we were the catalyst,

then, for him actually just returning
the phone.

- On the other side of the island,

drug squad detectives Damon and
Zoenique are having

their own lost phone issues.

- All we've heard all morning is, "I
can't find my phone.

"Damon, can you help me find my
phone?"

It was on her desk.

So, yeah, her phone was on her desk,

so that's the level that I had...

See, talk about me, that's what I have
to deal with every day.

- SHE CHUCKLES

They have just seized a large bag from
the cruise ship cabin

of a man suspected of conspiracy to
smuggle

the deadly drug carfentanyl into
Bermuda.

- Now they need to search it.

- As a foreign national, the police
can only hold the American suspect

for 48 hours without charge,

with the first day almost past.

- The clock is ticking.

- They must search his belongings for
any incriminating evidence,

which will be put to him in interview

before charge approval can be
requested.

Quite a lot to do in a small police
service.

- In an ideal world, we'd be able to
turn this over to,

you know, an interview team, and then,
you know,

then maybe a search team, and then,
you know,

you'd have your investigators, but
unfortunately, we are everything.

- They get going, aware that the
suspect's belongings

could contain carfentanyl,

a deadly drug that can be absorbed
through the skin.

- Six T-shirts.

Three sleeveless undervests.

- So Detective Damon is taking no
chances.

- Yeah, definitely. At the very least,
gloves.

And be careful what...how we're
handling it.

- They find in his belongings, further
items of jewellery

worth tens of thousands of pounds,

which must be documented.

- We have to take notes of everything
that is seized.

- Black band Aqua Master,

and chrome colour Rolex.

- It protects us and it just makes
sure that, you know,

nobody can come up and say, "Oh, well,
we had this in our bag."

- Several containers of what appear to
be over-the-counter pills

are also found, which must be
itemised,

despite the officers being up against
the clock.

- These are red.

So, I don't know what the clear ones
are.

We found a bunch of what appears to be
commercially made pills.

Most of them seem consistent.

There was one open bottle which has
raised my suspicion,

so what I want to do is I'll take a
sample of each

and I'll send those to the analyst.

- Finally, the searching of the
suspect's belongings is completed.

- Just about finished.

- With time to spare, detectives Damon
and Zoenique are now armed

with plenty more evidence to put to
the suspect in the interview.

The suspect was charged with

conspiracy to smuggle controlled
substances.

He was remanded in prison in Bermuda
to await trial.

- Today's a good day.

We've got a result in that we got our
man - safely -

cos the most important job a policeman
has

is to go home at the end of the day.

- Next time, a possible SOS...

- Oh, wait a minute, somebody's
flagging us down.

- ..a hunt for an elusive suspect...
